Poll: If there were other ways of making events in later books occur, would you want Remus to stay DADA Professor? For how long? Vote Now! |
![]() Author has written 8 stories for Harry Potter. MuggleCreator here at last. I love HP - I can recite phrases from the books. So my main focus is that (I already have some stories in the works) but I may eventually try my hand in a few other domains as well. I want to be a published author one day. OK, I sort of am, but that's for Write4Fun story comps and things... Before I knew about fanfiction, I would tell stories to myself about a book or books I had just read. In order to do this, however, I need good plot and good characterisation from the author. I'm quite good at impersonating different voices. Favourite Authors: I frequently wish I lived in the world of Harry Potter: HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I hope the new year brings joy and happiness to you who read this message. Check out my favourites - I have about 3000 fave stories and nearly 90 authors - and put me on Author Alert. It's easier to keep up with the changes that way, as I do want you to see all my stories, not just one. 5/7/13: Well, it's official; I've only got thirteen official school weeks left! NEWTs are less than 3 months away. Eep! 12/2/2014: I'm baaack! I have been for a while actually. But anyway, I'm graduated...I've done my NEWTs, and have chosen and been accepted for the MADAMs (aka, uni) course I want to take. Please vote in my poll if you haven't already. I've discovered a Group called "Fanfictioners Against World Hunger". Wanna be a part of it? Simple. Go to freerice . com and play the wordgames! You donate 10 grains of rice for every correct answer and you might learn some new words along the way. See Gryffindor777's profile for more details. I just read an article today about a website that you may be interested in. www. beautifullengths. com. au The Sorting Hat says that I belong in Hufflepuff! Said Hufflepuff, "I'll teach the lot, and treat them just the same." Scores: Pottermore thinks so too! Yep, you saw that right - I'm on Pottermore! I'm RoseKey11116, if anyone wants to know. I'd prefer to know you first though. The wand above is what chose me on there. Each House has its own unique qualities. Slytherin just has the qualities and reputation which could build Dark wizards easily. But really, all Dark wizards (eg. Death Eaters) can't have all come from Slytherin. Reference: Peter Pettigrew, Barty Crouch Jnr. And some Light wizards are not characters to emulate either. I've come to realise onne of the tragedies of the HP books is that Jo shows, truthfully, how some characters (people) do stupid things when they're younger, and they don't always have the chance to make it up, or change fully. The tragedy is that certain characters are killed/ imprisoned before they have that chance - properly, anyway. After all, 17 is more mature than 15; 21 is more mature than 17. But real maturity comes with age; 21 is still very young. See my character musings, below, for more. I now pay attention to when it is a full moon. And every time I notice, I think of Remus Lupin. I commemorate dates from the books - for example, this year Harry turns 34 and Teddy is in the middle of his 5th year at Hogwarts. Victoire is in the middle of her 4th year. As well as all the other next gen kids' years... I believe James would be about eight (8) right now, Al, Rose & Scorpius would be about seven (7), Lily, Hugo et al would be about five (5). Halloween this year will be the 33rd anniversary of James and Lily's deaths. Please check out/ google the pages of John Kearns, whitehound, HP Lexicon essays, The Leaky Cauldron essays. They, along with authors on ff. net, have helped me shape my views of the Harry Potter world. Particularly in regards to the characters (see below). However, they do need to be taken with a grain or two of salt... Character Musings: Before I begin individual characters... One of the things we love about the books is that the characters are all complex. There's always more to a character than meets the eye; a lot of which we have to speculate on. Hopefully, I've got these at least fairly accurate. I think I relate most to Hermione; she's smart, can be a little bossy, but stands by her friends strongly. At times she is misguided – occasionally having move fervour for a cause than sense (SPEW should've been handled from a whole different angle...), and is quite stubborn, even when it's better to change her views a bit. But hey, that's why we call it "growing up". I believe in her and Harry being siblings to each other, btw. Who cares if it doesn't make much "literary sense" to some people; the Trio's friendship is unique, and I like it that way! I also like Ginny - in the first books, her crush on Harry was cute, so I loved it when they got together. And isn't she a spitfire! Though her behaviour in sixth book does irritate me. Really, crashing into a commentary box just because Smith was being idiotic? Ah well...again with the "growing up" thing I suppose. An unfortunate thing is that due to the way Jo's shaped her character, showing, really, only glimpses at times in the scheme of things, it can be hard to see a fleshed-out version. I'm not explaining this very well, but...check out some of those essays (above); they round things out nicely. I can see parts of myself in Tonks because she's clumsy but cool. She's fiercely loyal, and imo has hidden insecurities that she hides with her laughter. I can't wait until Pottermore reveals more about her. My nickname ought to be Tonks, actually... I really am clumsy... Harry is pure of heart, reasonably smart & powerful (with good acting skills!) but can be a bit arrogant and a bit of a "popular jock" at times (sixth book again)... Ron provides humour, but also is a great strategist and Harry's first friend. Yes they have their fights; both of them (Ron especially) can be tactless, and Ron does get jealous easily. But I don't think he's so shallow that he'd abandon Harry if he was Sorted into Slytherin (for example). Be horribly confused, yes; turn his back on him completely, no - he'd ask Harry "What the ruddy hell happened?" first. There are multiple examples in the books of Ron showing that, whilst he's got abysmal tact, he'll be there for Harry - from sacrificing himself on a chessboard and beyond. Remus is my favourite Marauder. He suffered so much, causing him to ALWAYS be pessimistic, but he chose the better path : calm & kind wins over bitterness! Of course, as he was bitten at a very young age, society's stupid attitudes have had a long time to fester in him; hence why he's so pessimistic. But at least he came back. Every time. Did you notice? And Molly Weasley – as well as several other people – represents motherly love. NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU --. Imo, Fleur was, for most of the book anyway, a sort of “outer” Order member. Only coming every so often to meetings; more of a source of info and contacts than a close “action” member. At least at first. I mean, I see her as Bill’s girlfriend before she was an Order member. And, while Bill could and would find out reasonably early whether she thought Fudge was an idiot or not and whether she believed Dumbledore, imo the actual revelation of the Order would be a bit more of a delicate operation. That’s just my view. It’s largely based on the fact that Fleur is never seen (at least, not in my memory) at Headquarters. Sirius Black: A loveable idiot who didn't have the chance to grow up. Also, I (along with a few others) believe that Sirius may have had some form of Personality or Mood Disorder. I mean, he's really quick to swing from happy to sad to angry & back. His parents were – second cousins, I think?, after all, and the Blacks had been inbreeding before that. If that's true, Azkaban really didn't help; then, he got one year of half-freedom (after a year of obsessing over the rat) before he was dumped into the house of his childhood which he thought he'd escaped at sixteen. No wonder he resorted to baiting Severus. It could also explain why Sirius didn't think through the consequences of That Prank (the Willow Incident). Sigh. Poor Siri. Albus Dumbledore: Where do I start? Poor Al. He's a kind, grandfatherly, Machiavellian master. When he was a teenager, his sexuality and brilliance isolated him. It's also possible to look at him as being a high-functioning autistic person, as some have suggested. In other words, he had a brilliant mind but had difficulty, say, understanding or recognising emotions. No wonder he developed such a talent in Legimency; he needed it to understand what a person meant behind their 'confusing' facial expression. To top that off, he's gay, and while it has been implied, I think, that LGBTI people are accepted in the wizarding world (I think by Jo Rowling herself in an interview or something), we don't know if that was the case in the Dumbledore household, or at Hogwarts during the time he attended as a student. So when Grindlewald came... After that, when Ariana died, he couldn't forgive himself. Then, once he defeated Grindlewald, the wizarding world refused to leave him in peace, clamouring for to take on just that one more role, when really, all he wanted to do was teach. Another fanfic author (SuiteSambo) has suggested that Dumbledore's greatest strength is also his greatest weakness; his ability to love. Overall, Albus means well, but he's too used to thinking that only he can protect the world and those he loves, that only he can solve the problem, so that he forgets to delegate, and tries to take on everything himself. He's also too used to believing the good in people - which is a lovely trait but can be misguiding. Poor Al. Lily Potter nee Evans: Oh boy. Lily - like many characters in Jo's universe - is complicated. During the early books, we're given the impression that she was a sweet, caring girl, friendly to all. However, as the series goes on, more layers are added. Basically, I believe that Lily was a sweet, caring girl; but as the youngest, and with her pretty red hair and green eyes, she was also a spoilt, protected child who developed into something of a Queen Bee in later years. This led to trouble at Hogwarts, and before: as soon as she learnt magic was real. We never see Lily and Severus meet in public; given the reaction of 'Tuney', it's not hard to understand why. Lily has enough caring to befriend the drab-looking boy who knows about magic, but she's not strong enough to make the friendship any more than secret, though she will defend him. How much of this image-consciousness is due to her parents/ town/ community can be speculated. After all, Petunia is quite clearly "image-conscious" as well. Once they get to Hogwarts, the problems begin in earnest however. Bright and cheeky, Lily charmed many of the teachers at Hogwarts. This would also get her friends in the dorms. But it wouldn't take long for Lily to realise that being friends with a Slytherin just isn't cool, no matter what existed before. It would be natural for Lily to downplay that friendship, whilst defending Severus as not being one of the "nasty ones". However, by the time fifth year rolls around, their differences are stretching them, pushing them apart. Lily lets this happen. When Severus slips up due to his humiliation, Lily doesn't let him apologise; and she says that "her friends" have been warning her about him for years. Not other friends, but friends. Lily let Severus go for the sake of popularity's sake; and, we're supposed to think, partly due to this (& the relentless "teasing") he turned his back on the Light. James Potter: Another difficult one. Look, James was a bully. No ifs, ands, or buts about it - though it took me a while to see this clearly. After all, James is also supposedly brave, responsible and friendly, not caring that one of his friends is a werewolf. However... Remus was a Gryffindor. I doubt James would have looked past his "furry little problem" if he was a Slytherin. James grew up in a very Light family. It's not inconceivable to me that, as his father was certainly a Gryffindor, James would have grown up being fed stories of "Gallant Gryffindor" and "Slimy Slytherin". Perhaps some of this was accidental; perhaps some of it was supposed to be "friendly bias" stories. But the fact remains that James came to Hogwarts prejudiced against Slytherin; and prejudice often - if not always - stems from the parents and family. James was also a very spoilt child. His parents had him "late in life". (As a related aside, given the span of wizarding ages, I prefer to think that the Potters on the BFT are cousins rather than parents to James, as Charlus P was born in 1920. Of course, it could be Jo's unfortunate lack of skill with numbers showing, but still...) James was an only child. In some fics I've seen, Draco M is seen as a representation of him. How accurate that is, I don't know, but the fact remains that he was influenced to be someone quite nasty. At least to those he didn't like. To others, he was a great young man; excellent at Transfiguration and most other subjects, a whiz on the Quidditch pitch... He befriended Sirius, and accepted Remus. But. As for the Head Boy thing; some (in the books and otherwise) say he "changed". I like to think this is at least partially true. Perhaps after the Willow and Lake Incidents he got a wake-up call. But change doesn't happen overnight. And there is evidence from the books that James continued "attacking" Severus right up to, and during, seventh year. We don't know the details of this; whether he did it by himself or with the other Marauders' knowledge, whether it was just to prove a point or in something legitimate, such as a duelling tournament. James also joined the Order. Thanks to that Harry Potter Prequel short story that Jo wrote and auctioned off for charity a few years ago, it is possible to say that James and Sirius, at least, could have been in the Order by the start of their seventh year. Or they could have just been pretending. Either way, the Prequel shows that James can still be an arrogant idiot when he wants to be (their treatment of the Muggle policemen...) Severus Snape: Severus was, essentially, a good man who went astray in his younger years before repenting and spending the rest of his life attempting to make up for his mistakes. From hints in the book (and a bit of research) it is clear that he is supposed to come from the industrialised north of England. There, the height of praise is apparently "Not bad", with an accent that is easy to make fun of (at least to some people). It is also hinted that Severus may have lived with his family in a "terrace" or something like that. This would be a two-up, two-down house; quite possibly (at least when Severus was a child) it would have had an outdoor toilet and a bath would have been an old copper/ tin tub filled from the sink. And there'd be no chance of magic "sprucing things up", not with Tobias Snape around. Small wonder then, that Severus' hair is lank and greasy, even when Harry attends Hogwarts; it would have become a point of pride for him. The accent would have been ditched as soon as possible for an imitation of "posh". It's possible - actually quite likely - that Eileen Prince(-Snape) was not from Slytherin; she seems to have passed on a seccond-hand account of the House to Severus, as he does not give any indication of knowing that a half-blood with a last name that clearly sounds Muggle would possibly have issues there. In fact (as we all know) he encourages Lily, a Muggle-born, to go there. It's quite possible that Eileen had been in the "Slug Club", and thought that Slughorn would be able to help Severus achieve great things, even though he's a half-blood who has grown up largely Muggle. Then, when Severus arrives at Hogwarts, he soon finds out that it's not as easy as his mother made it sound. The other boys in his dorm would have come from families that were at the very least "neutral". Severus would have to find his place pretty fast; and though he tries to cling to Lily's friendship, it doesn't really work out. In the Lake Incident, when Severus calls Lily a mudblood, it is worth noting that no Slytherins come to his aid. I think it's quite probable that they were waiting to see how he handled things, and having something of a laugh at the "half-blood's" expense. After he called Lily that, they might have been a bit easier on him - after all, he's just got rid of the dirty-blooded girl; he's one of them now. Full of self-hatred, Severus is drawn further and further into the Dark's web. Another point to note is that it's quite possible that others, e.g., Sirius, would have been curious about "the Dark Arts". However, due to Severus' lack of social skills, as well as his house, he's the one that is "clearly" interested in them. He's something of a geeky goth (has flair for the dramatic, etc) and can't hide it. Fast-forward a few years. We don't know how much teacher-training there is at Hogwarts. It appears there's none, really. Good for you if you're hired once you've already had some training in your subject (e.g. Mastery of Transfiguration). Severus does not have this. However, learning a subject, and teaching it, are two quite different things. Especially if, like Severus, you're a natural at it. Severus has impossibly high standards due to the fact that he is a natural at Potions, and just doesn't understand why certain people just don't get it. So he calls them dunderheads. Also, Potions is a highly dangerous subject; Severus had very good reason to be angry when a firework exploded in a potion of Swelling Solution. If that had hit someone on the tongue, they could have choked! Severus started teaching at an age where the NEWT students could well have been part of that crowd watching the Lake Incident. So he became a dragon. Severus is a good character. He just has a few flaws. Like all of us. My favourite pairings are Remus/Tonks, James/Lily, Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione and canon pairings. I don't like slash with main characters unless Jo has okay'd it (Dumbledore, that's you): Jo's developed them to be a certain way, they ARE it. For me, anyway. I wish Jo hadn't killed off Tonks, the Marauders, Fred, Dobby, etc. But I can understand. At least with the Marauders. See, before 1981 they were a team, united. Then Peter deserted and James, with Lily, died. The Marauders were split. But, by the end of DH, Jo showed them together again. More than that; according to the book, they were happy again...I just wish they could've been happy together alive. Tonks was killed because she was with Remus. In the Epilogue of HP:DH, has anyone else noticed that because May 1998 was the Battle of Hogwarts, it's actually "19-&-a-bit Years Later"? Heh, that's kind of obvious. I have also been reading things on the website Accio Quote. Rather illuminating... JK Rowling has only ever named one character directly after someone. Most of her names were collected from war memorials, phone books and other places. But when Jo was writing Goblet of Fire, there was a little girl who loved the Harry Potter series. It was her escape from the treatment of her Leukaemia. Her mother wrote, faxed and emailed Jo through her publishers. Jo received them two weeks after they were sent to her because she had been on holiday. Jo had a feeling she was too late, but replied anyway. Jo was right. The letters were received the day after the nine year old died. But Jo had done some very special things; the letters revealed the plot of GoF. But it wasn’t until the girl’s mother was reading the actual book to her other children that the greatest thing was realised. On Page 159, a little first year called Natalie MacDonald is Sorted into Gryffindor. Harry’s house and the house of the brave. (For the full story, see the Accio Quote website.) IMPORTANT! If you like reading the books fics, protest. They're being taken DOWN! There is someone on ff net who faves these fics then reports them. He used to be "Delete the Clutter" now he's "Honey the Bee". He's not the first and he won't be the last, but he is the most vicious so far. 160 fics have been deleted already. I have so many ‘reading the books fics’ as faves and alerts and they're just gonna VANISH! I cannot believe certain people are so stupid! I've said over and over to other authors these past few days: It. Is. FANFICTION! If your fic is deleted, a website has been created for your to post elsewhere. readingthehpbooks. proboards. com/ index. cgi(Point Given has more details) Well! It appears things are against us. Proboards doesn't like us posting "copyrighted" material either... This. Is. Really. Stupid. Try: yourfanfiction . com Have some Common Sense! It's lacking at the moment. :( OKAY! I went back and properly rechecked the ff.net guidelines. This is what the fuss is about: In the "Publish: Rules & Guidelines" section, it says – Entries not allowed: 3. MST: comments inserted in between the flow of a copied story. Actions not allowed: 3. Copying from a previously published work (including musical lyrics) not in the public domain. Apparently, "in the public domain" is only after the author has been dead for 50 years. Jo is still very much alive, so... If you've ever pushed on a door marked pull or vice versa, copy and paste this into your profile. If you have a tendency to talk to yourself post this in your profile. If you've ever tripped over your own feet, copy and paste this into your profile. If you have a true friend, copy and paste this into your profile. If you think that being unique is cooler than being cool, copy and paste this into your profile. If you have ever tripped up and/or down the stairs copy and paste this into your profile. I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty OBITUARY FOR THE LATE MR. COMMON SENSE Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and Maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get Parental consent to administer Calpol, sun lotion, or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing. The Harry Potter Pledge: I promise to remember Harry How much am I worth?
