Hi my name is Mandy and I’m 19. I have been writing for years now but took a large break about 2 years ago. However I am back now and, hopefully after graduating, a better writer. I have a lot of fandoms but the current ones are listed below--they change frequently… Twilight Evermore The Mortal Instruments Trilogy CSI: NY Glee As I continue to write/ read fan fiction I find that I have several pet peeves, which are listed below. If you’re looking for any of the following things find a different author. Pointless Smut. I do not write porn. If there is a sex scene then it's in the context of a story with a lot of layers and developed characters. Outside of that scenario I personally feel like I am writing the outline for a high quality fantasy porno. Dramatic Story lines with no details. Okay so your character is depressed and cuts herself. Now what? How are you going to develop that story to show her torture, her pain, her fears, her relief? Is she going to be saved? If so how will her hero find out? Will he freak out or just get upset? There are so many different things to consider when you have a character that has a very dramatic story line and sadly when authors don't know how to answer these questions they skip it all together creating a very shallow story with no detail. Unrealistic Ability. It's one thing if your writing about vampires, werewolves, or any other mythical creature but if your writing in the world of a human please remember your own limitations and try to factor that in to what your human character can physically do! I have read so many fan fictions where the female lead has the strength of 10 men and I just want to scream! No women unless she's a body builder is going to be able to lift a grown man above her head and hold him there without and adrenaline rush. Be realistic when your writing for the human world. AU and OOC fictions. Lets make this clear I have no problem with authors who write these fictions. I just personally hate when characters and worlds are changed so drastically that they are mere shadows of their original selves. You want to inflate a characteristic? Fine by me but the core of a character need to be the same. An example is Edward Cullen from Twilight. I have seen so many fan fictions where he is a pimp; I wanted to rip out my hair! You are taking a characteristic that has never been seen in Edward and applying it. That changes everything from how he looks to how he talks. At that point why not just write a new story completely and just use the look and setting of the character? You will not find AU or OOC fiction from me... |
