![]() Author has written 2 stories for Twilight. Hi all... I have lived in Alaska all my life (and no, my fellow Twi-Hards, sadly I am not acquainted with Tanya and her clan). I’ve had a few what you might call ‘obsessions’ in my time, including Star Trek, Harry Potter, various computer and video games, and now Twilight. It is this last one which has my most firmly in its wicked grasp at the moment. I am a relative newcomer to the Twilight universe. Believe it or not, a little over a year ago I had little interest in any of this—I didn’t even go to see New Moon at the theater! (And yes, I want to kick myself for that now...) Like many, I was vaguely aware of the Twilight phenomenon. I knew that it was a series of young adult books about vampires—good vampires who didn’t kill humans—and that it was a love story. And werewolves...I knew they were in there somewhere too. I was aware that a couple of movies had been made already, and that Robert Pattinson had been cast as the leading vamp. I’d seen him as Cedric Diggory, of course, and I remember thinking ‘Yeah, he’d make a good vampire—he’s certainly got that sultry look...’ But I didn’t have much interest in trying the books. Not being a teenager myself, I foolishly (very, very foolishly) assumed that they would be a waste of time. Believe it or not, it was actually my mom who got me to try these books. Like me, she had assumed they were written for teenage girls and probably sucked in the opinion of anyone old enough to vote, but then she heard a good review from a trusted source, and decided to try Twilight for herself. She loved it. She convinced me to try it, and I was immediately hooked. It surprised me that it was written in first person; I hadn’t read any novels in that POV since high school, and to be honest I didn't like it much at the time. But as I sat down to read Twilight, it didn’t take me long to change my mind. I devoured the first book and went out to get the next two. I careened through New Moon (wanting to get to Edward’s reappearance as quickly as possible), and took Eclipse more slowly. The latter remains my favorite of the four, though I also adore the last quarter of New Moon (there's almost a pun in there somewhere) and the second half of Breaking Dawn. Once through with Eclipse I broke down and bought the hardcover of Breaking Dawn, knowing full well that I couldn’t last until I could find it in paperback. In the end, I was satisfied with the way things turned out...and yet I remained hungry for more. Yes, I was hopelessly obsessed. I found it difficult to focus on other things...I saw comparisons to Twilight in everything...and of course I was totally in love with Edward Cullen. I even named my mother’s two new goldfish Alec and Jane (much to her chagrin, I might add!) I read all of the books a second time...and then a third. And still, it was not enough... So I turned to Twilight the movie, which at the time was the only one out on DVD. To be honest, I was wary. Having seen what screenwriters tend to do to the plots of beloved books, I was worried that it wouldn’t live up to everything the book was. Still, I was curious. Watching the story in this way was a strange experience, a mixture of thrill and bemusement. Mostly I liked it—it helped that I’d already envisioned Rob as Edward, and I thought Kristen did a great job as well. But the way they butchered parts of the plot bothered me, of course. The part that irked me the most was the meadow, which was mangled and truncated and came nowhere near to capturing the magic of that pivotal chapter in the story. Shrug. Despite its flaws, I enjoyed the movie enough to look forward to the DVD release of New Moon. When I finally got to see it, I was impressed by how well they followed the book this time. Sure, there were some BIG exceptions, mostly during the Volterra stuff, but they did such a good job with the emotions of it all that I didn’t mind so much. I felt that Rob really came into his own with his portrayal of Edward this time, and apart from a few quibbles (black Volvo, altered plot details, wrong eye color at times, etc.), I thought they did a superb job. And perhaps most important, they got the diamond effect right this time! I’ll even forgive them for having Edward actually step out into the sunlight (which I did NOT envision him doing in the book), because those shots were so breathtakingly beautiful. Anyway, I joined the millions of fans who eagerly awaited the release of Eclipse. Again, I loved it overall, with some reservations (did they really have to cut out some of my favorite lines??). But oh well. The meadow stuff was sexy enough that I’m willing to be a little lenient, lol. Then there was The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, which was an interesting companion to Eclipse, though predictably sad. So here I am, waiting for Breaking Dawn to hit the screens... Thank God for Fan Fiction! ooo About my story “Beyond the Horizon”: I started writing it purely for myself; I hadn’t even the slightest notion of posting it anywhere at first. I also didn’t realize that it would end up being such an extensive a foray into Edward’s mind! But I enjoyed the experience, and I am glad to know that some of you enjoyed reading the result of my efforts. Of course, the lion’s share of the credit goes to Ms. Meyer, as always. By the way, as I wrote in one of my author’s notes, the title refers to Edward’s line in “The Truth” about Bella being like a meteor which lit up his sky before it fell over the horizon, plunging his world into darkness. The idea was that ‘beyond the horizon’ is where they find each other again. Mind you, it could also refer to Edward’s outlook on life undergoing a change, if you want to be all English major about it... I'd like to give my thanks again to everyone who read "Beyond the Horizon", and especially to those who took the time to leave a review. To those of you who are still reading, don't be shy! (I know that's rich, coming from me!) But seriously, I'd love to hear what you think as well. ooo I know it's been awhile since I completed "Beyond the Horizon", and I just wanted to assure everyone that I have NOT given up on fanfiction. I have several stories in progress, though they won't be up here for awhile yet. My problem is that I have a tendency to start out writing one-shots which turn into something much more ambitious! So please, bear with me. Once I DO start to publish, I promise I won't keep you waiting forever between chapters. ooo In the meantime, I cobbled this together just for fun...enjoy! 25 signs that you may be a Twihard: 1) In your opinion, cold is the new hot. 2) You’ve taken to using strawberry scented shampoo in the hope that it will attract ‘Mr. Right’. 3) When other people sprain an ankle, they ask for ice; when you sprain an ankle, you ask for Edward. 4) Instead of saying “Excuse me, I have to use the bathroom,” you say “Excuse me, but I need a human minute.” 5) You find yourself muttering ‘filthy bloodsucker’ every time you swat at a mosquito. 6) Cedric Diggory is suddenly your favorite Hufflepuff, and Hufflepuff is no longer the least interesting House. 7) Whenever you trip or do something else clumsy or awkward, you say “Oops, I did a Bella!” 8) You nickname your mother’s two new goldfish Alec and Jane. ;) 9) You waste hours on Google Earth trying to find the Cullens’ house. 10) Whenever you watch the graveyard scene in Goblet of Fire, your friends have to endure you either (a) bawling like a baby or (b) shouting at the screen: “He’s not really dead! He’s a vampire! No seriously, he’s FAKING!” 11) On your three week vacation to Italy, you spend two and a half weeks searching for Volterra. 12) You find yourself making ‘Edward Scissorteeth’ jokes. 13) It makes your day when a silver Volvo drives past. 14) You OWN a silver Volvo. 15) On your vacation to Italy, you spend several hours trying to explain to the Italian police why you were trying to make out with the Renaissance sculptures. 16) When you play chess, you refer to the white queen as ‘Kick-*ss Vampire Bella’. 17) You try to convince your boyfriend to let you cover him with glitter paint. 18) You get into a serious argument with your friends about whether Edward or Jacob would win if it came to a fight (for the record, it would definitely be Edward, and for the further record, this one means your friends may be Twihards too). 19) Seemingly innocent and ordinary phrases such as “Two Cokes”, “Be good, please”, and “Let me see” are suddenly unbelievably sexy to you...especially when spoken in a murmur. 20) All the guys around you suddenly seem even more crass, unintelligent, and depressingly ordinary than they did before. 21) You feel sexy even when your hair looks like a haystack. 22) You feel even sexier when you’re covered with feathers. 23) You ask your boyfriend if he could please stick his head in the refrigerator for a few minutes before he kisses you. 24) You find yourself exclaiming ‘Holy Crow!’ in moments of surprise or awe. 25) You just can’t decide whether to call your male golden retriever ‘Mike’ or ‘Newton’. ...and that's it for now—if I think of more I'll add them. I hope that made some of you laugh, at least. I should add that no disrespect was intended toward owners of Swedish cars, members of Hufflepuff House, or Team Jacob. ;) ooo A quick update for anyone who has me on author alert. The new one-shot on my profile is for the 'Die, Daddy C, Die' contest for Savage's story 'Offside'. If you have not been following her story, my contest entry probably won't make a lot of sense! Just a friendly warning. ;) Just to clarify something, my spelling of the phrase 'just deserts' is indeed correct. :) I know—I was surprised myself when I looked it up! Apparently, 'just desserts' is a common misspelling of the phrase, probably due to the pronunciation and the fact that it makes a convenient pun. But according to the wiktionary, the 'deserts' in this case is the plural of 'desert', meaning "that which one deserves", a word which is rarely used outside this phrase. So, in case any of you were thinking that I'm simply a bad speller, or didn't know the difference between a banana split and the Sahara...well, I hope that cleared a few things up. :P |
