Top Ten Things People have Forgotten (or aren't old enough to realize) about 'A New Hope.' 1. There had never been a sci-fi movie without the planet Earth in it. 2. The only thing we knew about the SW universe before the movie started was the in Opening Scroll 3. Before Star Wars, laser weapons were depicted in sci-fi flicks as solid beams of light 4. The movie was originally in mono 5. In 1977, even the special effect that made Luke's landspeeder float was impressive 6. Star Wars wasn't released on VHS until 1982.. People would go see 'Star Wars' over and over again, thinking they'd never get a chance to see it again. 7. Audiences didn't realize Darth Vader was voiced over - we thought the actor was saying his lines from beneath the suit 8. While George Lucas was astute enough to keep the merchandising rights, there were no Halloween costumes or SW Toys available X-Mas 1977 9. There was debate as to which would have a longer lasting impact: Star Wars or Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Seriously. 10. Audiences didn't know what the hell was going on... the movie just started.. no explanations.. just pay attention, kid. And THAT is what made it the most awesome movie ever. I've heard youngsters talk about 'Avatar' as being revolutionary - phhfft... 'Avatar' is this generation's Tron. No movie has been as revolutionary as Star Wars. 'Awesome' is relative - and no movie will ever be as relatively awesome as Star Wars. And quit calling it 'New Hope' dammit. Back in the day, there was just Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi... no dang 'New Hope' bullcrap. Oh well. I'm done ranting. |
