What's up! I'm upintheair. That may or may not be my real name, but it probably isn't. Well, I suppose I should introduce myself. I'm a student at a university in New York, USA, and have lived in five of the seven continents, and have been to all of them (though I was a toddler when my family visited Antarctica so I feel a bit odd saying I've 'been' there). I study English, specifically I'm currently finishing my Master's degree with an Emphasis in Creative Writing. On to the formal stuff! Name: UpInTheAir Age: 23 (God, I feel old) Hobbies: Reading, Sleeping, Writing, School work (I genuinely enjoy the classes I take, this late in my college career), Romancing women (and usually - though thankfully not always - failing, I'm afraid), Television, the Internet (rather: teh interwebs), Poetry, Film making, and that's about it. I'm pretty boring, to be honest. Don't drink much (though I make a pretty mean mead, when I have ample months to prepare), never tried smoking or the like, am unsuccessful enough in love that I wouldn't ever call myself promiscuous, and don't play any other video game besides Pokemon (which occupies much, much more of my time than I would like to admit) and occasionally whatever BioWare is making (Mass Effect 2 was fucking amazing). Interests: Romancing women (and I do mean romancing: I'm a hopeless, sappy, pathetic romantic - then again most people professionally wanting to become/edit poets/poetry are), Sleeping, Finishing college, Obtaining a better student job (recreation department jobs suck), Socialising with my friends, Raising a solid family (just need the right girlfriend, sadly), Food (I've been a raving Foodie since I was sixteen), The word "pudding," and I suppose this site. Music is pretty fun, for me. I don't play an instrument or anything (I can play saxophone but am nothing to brag about) and am basically tone deaf, but I love indie and pop music. Anything, really. I literally like all music. Rock, rap, hip-hop, instrumental, swing, jazz, blues, country - as long as it's good I'll listen to it. Favorites: Hmm... Well, by Section, I like Naruto and Bleach, but my favourite Manga/Anime have to be Ah! My Goddess and Love Hina. I like entirely too many Books to read, and most of my favourites are contemporary fantasy (Nightside and The Dresden Files), alternate history as well as historical fiction (anything to do with Roman or Greek history - though medieval European is great, too), high fantasy (Black Company or Malazan Book of the Fallen), and I still have a week spot for Harry Potter (I was like ten when they came out, so yeah, I love it), I watch few cartoons, but I guess ones based on Comic Books are my favourites, I'll read anything about comic books if it's good (I was and always will be a comic book geek), Pokemon is the only video game I have really devoted my full attention to (sad, I know) other than anything made by BioWare, and I watch mostly just Lost, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Eureka, and occasionally South Park. Influences: I'd like to say other writers from this site, but not really. Mainly older journalists, novelists from the beat movement, and Shakespeare. Cliché, I know. But it's true. A lot of comic book writers as well (American and Japanese literature mainly). Translated Asian mythology and news is actually quite interesting when given the chance. Stuff I Like: Luna Lovegood. Pokemon. Poetry. Fiction. Neil Gaiman. Stories that don't deviate from cannon, but offer an alternate way things would turn out while sticking to the guidelines. Satire. The country of Singapore (it's my home). Florence Welch. There's more, but I'll stop here. For now... Stuff I Don't Like: Unneeded sexuality, pointless/unwarranted profanity, blatantly under-age shenanigans, deviation from great plot-lines, standard deviations (and maths as a whole, I suppose). When pairings are not what they should be (I am a firm believer in most canonical relationships, though have a soft spot for a few), such as slash when the characters are obviously heterosexual, two enemies suddenly realising they love each other when it would never - ever - happen in a respectable story, or freaky stuff like uncle/niece love (I'm looking at you, Heroes). Currently: I'm writing a Pokemon story. Go figure. It's called Effects, and is basically what every other Pokemon author does: follows a character of their own invention into the world of monsters and leaders. Hopefully mine doesn't suck. |
