Buffy tells Spike how she really feels but she the next day she gets a call from and an old 'friend' saying he's coming back

Flinging himself into the portal to rescue Dawn from Glory, a traumatized Spike reappears in Sunnydale 147 days later. Dawn is overjoyed to see the vampire; but something yanks the Spike back to a hell dimension. Dawn launches her own rescue mission and is soon followed by the Scoobies. The question soon becomes not whether they can rescue Spike, but can they rescue themselves.

Post-series, but only just. The Hellmouth is closed, and Spike is gone. A grieving Buffy does her best to cope, until she receives a call from one of Angel's people that turns her world upside down.

Non-canon season 4, right from the beginning. Spike and Buffy get a bit more involved during Willow's spell than they had a chance to on the show and must learn to live with the consequences. In an AU season 6, Willow has accidentally sent Spike and Buffy off to another dimension where they are both ordinary humans and married. They are there for some time - long enough to develop a real relationship. A relationship that goes south for a while when they are back in Sunnydale, but that gets repaired when Buffy turns out to have brought a surprise back with her.

You would have thought their paths would never cross, but the factionless man at the end of the street begs to differ.
