Hey, so some of you doubt my abilities in horror...so here you guys go

It was a long day at work, I worked the night shift so naturally I am tired when I get home. It didn't help much that I felt like I was being watched. My room mate, Nio, was already asleep. *I'm surprised I got home without hitting anything, especially with that rain and all* I think.

It had been raining all night, and the weather man said it won't stop til morning. And with it as cold as it is, it definitely made a sound against the windows. Groggily, I walked upstairs to my room where I collapsed on the bed and fell asleep immediately. I woke up to a loud thump in the middle of the night. I got out of bed, still half asleep and walked over to where I thought I heard the noise. Thunder boomed overhead. I looked around to see nothing there but three apples I left out so I could eat them later. *I thought I had four...* I think and slowly start walking back to my room when I hear another thump. I turn around and see one of the apples gone. I walk over again, and see it on the floor, destroyed.

How did that fall over?* I think to myself. *I must have been walking really heavy* I start to clean up the mess, not thinking anything of it. I finally get done cleaning and I put the mess of the apple away in the trash. Some lightning strikes, and I see a shadow in the windowsill for only a few seconds. I stumble backward, and fall on my ass. I slowly get up and try to recuperate myself.

What was that thing? How long has it been in the house?* I think to myself. I try to turn the lights on but nothing comes on. *Power outage. Great.* I slowly start to head to my own room, trying not to alert whatever it was that I saw. *I'll think about this in the morning, I don't want to investigate this in the dark.* When I get to my room, I hear a hiss. I start to back away and go back to the living room. Once I get there, I start to think *God, it's following me...was it at work when I didn't notice? How long have I been blind to it? Whatever 'it' is?* I hear footsteps coming toward the living room and I look around, trying to find something to hide behind. I finally decide on the island in the kitchen, and I dive behind it.

"Mark? Are you home now? What are you doing?" I hear a familiar voice say.

"Nio? Is that you?" I ask

"Yeah, why?" Nio calls back.

"Oh thank god," I say "Get behind here with me." I pull her behind the island with me. "What is this about Mark?" She asks me. "There is a monster in the house Nio, it has been following me around and I don't know where it is now. It hissed at me, and knocked over an apple at me." I say.

"Really Mark? That's what this is about?" She asks. I nod at her.

"Well I got a cat today Mark, a kitten to be exact. Are you sure it wasn't that?" She asks.

"Uh...why didn't you tell me you got a kitten?" I ask. She goes to my room, me trailing cautiously behind her. She opens my door and turns on the light. In my bed is a kitten, which hisses at me then jumps into Nio's arms and purrs.

"You're kidding me right?" I ask.

"No, I am not," she replies.

"I was scared of a kitten?" I ask in disbelief. "Yes, Mark, you were. Now I'm taking Bonnie here to my room, get to sleep ok?" she says.

I nod and turn off the lights to my room and crawl under the covers. I chuckle to myself as I lay on my side. *Afraid of a kitten, she's never going to let me live that one down...but anyway, time to get to sleep. I wonder when the power came back on...* I think.

I drift off to sleep slowly.

Narrator P.O.V.

As Mark was asleep in his bed, Nio and her kitten Bonnie were sleeping in their bed--all three in a deep sleep.

In the hall, the boards creaked with a heavy weight. A real creature lurked in the doorway of Mark's bedroom.

Claws bared, it muttered a few words:

"Mark, you weren't afraid of the kitten, you were afraid of me."
