A few words about Song of Swords:-

It is different to Shinigami Confessions, focussing more on the S.Society's dark side than its funny one. The BLEACH anime finished recently and I was really quite depressed about it,not just because it's a show I enjoy, but because a lot of characters never got their back stories mentioned, let alone animated. I have a huge headcanon regarding those issues and (in my opinion, anyway) that's a waste, so Song of Swords is an outlet for all of that! I intend to portray Yama-jii's backstory, how Unohana entered the 13 squads, Kyoraku and Ukitake's back stories and bankais and lots more. I chose to start the story with Hikifune as her character always interested me, but she was never really explained in much detail and considering people's theories about her with regard to Ichigo it seems silly not to at least try and explore her history. Hotaru is an OC, I'm afraid - in fact a good 75 or so percent of the cast will be,as it would be nigh impossible to write a story like this without a few. Regarding the issue of babies in the Soul Society, my viewpoint on that is that it was never fully explored in the animanga anyway - sure Kubo went to a great deal of effort showing the 'adoption' process in the Soul Society, but the noble houses confuse the issue. Therefore, I think it makes more sense for babies to be completely possible but only among two people with strong enough reiatsus - particularly in the case of the woman - to cope with the strain of carrying a child.
