They're both in the woods and he knows it, and Mac's in danger and Will never had a choice in choosing his sisters and his mother but he's pledged his life to MacKenzie and he's chosen to protect her and it means something, even if the simple platinum band was taken from him during inmate processing. (Spoilers for 3.04 and 3.05.)

Based on LilacMermaid25's prompt on tumblr: Mac manages to restrain herself from hitting Will (barely), but not everyone on their staff can contain themselves when they see him being mean to her.

After the stabbing the Navy doctor told her it was highly unlikely that even she did conceive that it would implant, that between the adhesions and the depth and angle of the knife wound she would probably never carry a viable pregnancy, and yet here she is, staring at two pink lines on a stupid white stick ten days after her husband was thrown into federal prison. (S3 spoilers.)

Sometimes you have to hit the bottom before you can climb back up

The front of her building was crowded with police cars and an ambulance, a long yellow cord preventing anyone from going inside. "Will?" she tried again, a little louder, but there was still no response. Reluctantly, she cracked open one eye. Shit. She hadn't even made it to bed. It was dark, and she was lying face down in the dirt. Where the hell was she? Does Mac have the hangover from hell? Or is it something worse? Post S2.

He's too tired to shout, too tired to work up a scathing look to shoot at Mac from the news desk, too tired to figure out exactly where he had gone wrong today. (Will/Mac)

They meet as strangers six years later at charity event, years and the whole of the Atlantic between them. One-shot AU. "What if Mac had never had Jim in her life?"

They had told the staff to get some sleep while maintenance worked to bring the generators back on, but Mac isn't sleeping. Neither is he, obviously. (The answer to the question of why Will was waiting outside of Mac's meeting with the lawyers. Set during 2.07.)

She hasn't slept in over twenty-four hours, and she's still got miles and hours to go until she intends to rest. (A version of 'Under the Waves' where Mac comes home before the Ghouta attack, no one gets sarin dropped on them, and everyone is a lot happier. 2.09 AU.)

She tries to hold out, for longer and longer, like a child holding their breath under the water. Eventually she'll drown, or come up for air, lungs burning. Either way, it'll be over. She'll be done running away. (Will doesn't have his revelation on Election Night, and by Friday, MacKenzie has decided to embed again.)

Will has been punishing Mac for a long time. But what happens if someone else takes it as an invitation to do the same thing? Goes AU at the end of Season 1.

(...our arms fill with miracles.) What if Mac had brought Jerry up to the News Night floor to answer for what he'd done? How would that have changed things?

"It's not the internet this time," Charlie said. "The mailroom received some mail addressed to you and intercepted it. It's a threat, and it's credible." Set post Season 2.

"The ring on her finger was not a magic solution. It was a huge step in the right direction, but a lot of hurt still simmers just beneath the surface on both sides, and they're caught up in the excitement of the engagement, and the stress of the Genoa trial, and it only hits weeks later, during a rare, quiet moment."
