And then it's three in the morning in the middle of a really terrible day, with a serial killer on the loose and the rain pouring down, and Lestrade finds himself having coffee with John, piecing fragments of Sherlock Holmes into a kind of whole.

This is a story about a detective and his friend, not a detective story. Sherlock falls ill. Fortunately, his flatmate's not only a doctor but also happens to be his friend and someone who doesn't think caring is a disadvantage.

"On Danger Nights, as Mycroft Holmes has dubbed them, nothing is certain. The world seems to hold its breath while tiptoeing around the man who might or might not prove to be a hazard for himself." What if John Watson had actually been the John Watson we knew, with "strong moral principle" and "nerves of steel"? What if Sherlock Holmes had actually been the Sherlock Holmes we knew, "prepared to do what ordinary people won't do"? This story is how, in my mind, "His Last Vow" should have ended.

When John Watson grieves, he goes to the water.

Jim Moriarty is still out there. Mycroft Holmes is seething. And John Watson, who got himself dumped, fired and nearly blown up all in a single week, decides to go away for a couple of days. Told from a point of view of someone who had no idea who he was, his story was just a sad anecdote, just another proof that happy endings are not common in the real world.
