It wasn't like it used to be, and some cruel part of her wondered if it had ever really been anything at all. Still, he found her. He always did. Caryl, set two years after the events of 4.08.

Sequel to "Stray". Daryl and Carol left it all behind to start a new life together but there's no escaping the past when it shows up on their doorstep. Rated for strong and/or offensive language (Dixon mouth) and some violence. AU, no zombies.

She hadn't gone twenty miles down that back country road when the motor gave out. She'd just passed a sign, a homemade billboard of a plump woman wearing an apron - "Auntie Betty's Homemade Pastries, next left," when the engine hiccuped.

With Daryl, Rick and Michonne AWOL and more people falling ill daily to the mystery virus spreading through the prison, Carol finds herself on a long-shot, desperate run for medical supplies to save her family while the rest of the world falls apart. Spoilers through 4x02, but goes AU after that.

Rick tells Daryl that Carol isn't coming back. And it doesn't go how anyone thinks. Least of all Daryl.

Carol is gone, and now Daryl knows about it.

She carried that child for nine months, birthed her, raised her, and protected her from her ass of a father… only to have all that work stripped away. All Carol's hope was as shattered as her heart, a broken and bloody piece that was lying on the ground.

Daryl decides to take Carol hunting, but what they find was more than they'd bargained for. Sometimes, people will surprise you. Rated T for cussin', deer guts and zombie mayhem.

He blinked up at her sleepily, bleary-eyed and messy hair, with sleep-mussed tufts sticking up in all directions. She smoothed one of his cow-licks behind his ear on reflex, letting her fingers linger as she took in the occasional patch of silver that had started coloring his temples. All else considered, the years had been kind to them both. (Smut warning.)

He knew the way the story was supposed to go. Alive or dead, she was supposed to be behind that door. He'd read the ending a thousand times. He knew it by heart, every subtle emotion, every sullied second of it.

Everyone was giving the barn a wide berth, even after the last graves had been dug and the lingering fumes from the fire had long since aired out into the quiet country air. It was more a feeling than anything else, a reminder that a line had been crossed. Perhaps even on both sides.

Ed, The Governor, Woodbury...it all becomes too much for Carol and she needs to get out. Find some open space to just breathe. What happens when Carol realises that the dangers of this world are stronger inside than they are out? And how does Daryl handle being the one she turns to for help?

Inspired by the preview for Season 4. Love all of the possibilities with the expansion of the core group. Daryl and Carol have always had something special, inching their way towards something more than friendship. Can anything (or anyone) delay - or interrupt - that journey? In the weeks before the world fell apart, Daryl made a friend. The nightmare began with her. Note: this is NOT a Daryl/OC fic, though I now realize the title may give that impression.

Daryl is more aware of his choices regarding Carol than anyone knows, each choice changing their relationship bit by bit, but he doesn't know where the trail of choices will lead them, he can only follow. Set right after the Season 3 finale.

"She didn't hear anything. No voices from inside the prison, no walkers, no birds in the trees, not even the wind made a sound. Without speaking, they both turned, aimed their weapons and stood, shoulder to shoulder, watching the tree line. Something was coming." Caryl. Post S3 finale.
