The TriWizard Tournament was a year-long plot by Voldemort's minions. Something that long and complicated with so many parts all having to mesh perfectly had many occasions when something could have gone wrong. Especially as some of the actions of the false Moody required experimental spells, never before attempted. Some minor glitches could have brought disaster for the villains.

This moment has happened before, Ron and Hermione trying to follow Harry and finding Neville Longbottom blocking their path. But now, on the eve of battle, the moment plays out a little differently.
