Sam was forced to give up her newborn baby as a teenager to save her future and career. 20 years later she meets a new Airman with the last name of Carter in the SGC and Sam can't help but wonder if she is the child that she gave up so long ago.

A broken leg means medical leave, even for the base commander. Still, Sam is surprised when instead of a member of the IOA to temporarily replace her it is Jack O'Neill who comes through the 'gate. Jack expects his orders and the subsequent changes might not go over well on Atlantis right away, but his priorities are Sam and the future of the Atlantis Expedition.

General Jack O'Neill is bored with flying a desk and takes the chance to go off-world again when the opportunity presents itself. Not wanting to play favorites he leaves SG-1 behind with Carter in charge of the base and takes Ferretti and a diplomatic team with him. Of course, things don't go as planned and it's up to Sam to mount a S&R mission and bring them home safely.

Jack manages to get himself captured and Sam is sent to negotiate for his freedom. Unfortunately, the matriarch in charge of the male slaves is unconvinced of her claim and threatens to keep Jack as her personal slave.

All Sam wanted was to go home but readjusting to life on Earth is more difficult than expected. Nothing is the same and she doesn't know who to trust and what she wants anymore, other than keeping her daughter safe. Jack knows exactly what he wants and makes sure he's there for them, even before he learns the truth.

Jack made a promise and to keep it, he and Hammond set a plan in motion to track down the Rogue NID operatives. Elsewhere, Sam and Bra'tac continue to go from planet to planet, attempting to shift the balance of power in the galaxy along the way.
