The opening lines are a paraphrasing of the opening lines of 'The Name of the Wind' and 'The Wise Man's Fear,' and the part of a wise man fearing the night with no moon is also a paraphrasing of a quote from 'The Wise Man's Fear.'

Basically, the plum bob incident in WMF comes to the masters' attention at the University, and Kvothe ends up in many kinds of trouble, especially when some Ruh show up and trigger his already volatile emotions.
