Newt tugs at his lip with his teeth for a moment, and then pulls at Hermann's arm, tugging it down so he can reach his hand, and slips the ring onto Hermann's finger. "I love you," he says, like it's a universal truth. "I love you, Hermann, and I—I want to be with you, okay?"

Hermann nods and then hisses at the pain the movement causes. Fuck, Newt thinks, I—I did that to him. I tried to—I tried to kill him. The Precursors had been discarding little pieces of Newt for some time, before he even really noticed. Now his once-prominent instrument collection has shrunken down to one guitar he's had since before he could remember and he's standing outside of a pawn shop. He knows how this story ends. He can't change this. But maybe Hermann can.

When the longing for new letters and the pain of Newton's words becomes too great, Hermann goes to one of the bars in town and orders enough drinks that the bartender has to cut him off, citing alcohol poisoning. "You must be Precursor. You're late." Newton processes the sound of his voice—the way his tongue rolls the r when he says Precursor so it's more like Prrrecursor— and then the man stands up. He grabs his cane and turns around, holding out his hand towards him.
