Victoria Brennan is a young lady from the North coming down to live in Charleston, South Carolina with her father, Christopher Howard, during the American Civil War, after her mother's death. Here, she meets Ben Blue, a Sewee Indian fighting on the side of the Confederacy.

What happens when Tory's mom dies and all of a sudden she is being shipped off to South Carolina to meet the dad that has ever been mentioned, live on almost a deserted island, have to deal with her new "dad's" annoying girlfriend, and be called names at her new school. What will she do?
