Chapter 12
Disclaimer: I don't own the Vampire Diaries. I'm just borrowing. Only the story belongs to me.
Note: Previously, in "Heart of the Ocean," Klaus and Caroline find out about the Titanic's fate and about Captain Smith being manipulated by Ismay.
Hey, guys! I know I haven't touched this story in ages (the last time being June 4, 2017), but I've been busy in real life and inspiration hasn't come easily. I just watched the movie and it prompted me to update. No spoilers, just enjoy what I have for you.
Sunday, April 14, 1912 – Sunset…
Caroline stared out of the window on the promenade deck, her thoughts focusing on what Marissa had told them earlier. She couldn't believe the good captain was being manipulated by that horrible Ismay character just because he wanted the maiden voyage of the Titanic to make headlines and profit from the successful crossing. It also bothered her to know there were greedy humans in the world. Then again, she had been part of that world before Katherine turned her, so it wasn't as though she didn't know what it was like.
"Caroline, love, are you all right?"
Klaus' voice brought her back to reality and she turned to face him. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about the safety of all the humans on this ship. It's going to sink, Nik, and there's nothing we can do to prevent it. Half of the passengers are going to die because there aren't enough lifeboats." She sighed. "Is it wrong I want to save them?"
Klaus heard the worry in her voice and approached her, running his fingers through her hair. "No, love, it's not wrong. What you're feeling is compassion and it's something I wish I had."
"You have compassion."
"For you, yes," said Klaus. "But, you have no idea what it was like when I first turned. The bodies I left in my wake were too numerous to count. I killed innocent humans to survive, a new victim every century, and right now, I want to tear that Ismay bastard to shreds."
Caroline stepped back slightly. "You do?"
"You think Finn is the only one who is feeling anger toward him?" said Klaus. "I feel anger toward him as well. In fact, I'm hoping Finn gets to him first, because I don't want to be held responsible for my actions."
Caroline placed her hands on his face, locking eyes with him. "Nik, listen to me. I know you want to go after Ismay, and believe me, I wouldn't blame you or hold you back if you do, but what would it solve? Yes, it might mean one less Ismay in the world, but it would only be a temporary fix."
"Is that what putting your ex-lover felt like for you?"
At the mention of Tyler, Caroline said, "Now that you've mentioned it, yes, killing Tyler and Hayley was a temporary fix. I was angry the night I killed them, and I had no remorse as I ended their lives. But, once they were dead, I realized there was only a matter of time before I was caught, so I went to Katherine and the rest is history."
Klaus sighed and kissed her. "What did I do to deserve you?"
"You were in the right place at the right time," she said.
"Yes, I guess I was," said Klaus. "Now, what do you say we go for a walk on deck? I wouldn't want to miss the sunset if this is going to be last sunset this ship is going to see."
Caroline smiled. "I was just going to suggest that same thing."
Klaus returned her smile and kissed her again, stepping back and taking her hand, leading her out of the stateroom and heading toward the elevator to go up to the main deck for their sunset stroll. They knew there was nothing they could do at the moment, but at least they could at least enjoy what little time the ship had left.
Finn & Sage's Stateroom – That Same Moment…
Sage watched Finn sleep they held each other close in their bed. They had just spent the last several hours making love. While it was true Marissa's premonition was going to come to fruition soon, Sage did what she had to keep Finn focused on her so he didn't go after Ismay for manipulating Captain Smith to light the last four boilers. She smiled and kissed his forehead, inhaling his scent. She then felt him stir and kiss her neck, causing her to laugh.
"I thought you were asleep."
Finn smiled sleepily against her neck. "I was until you kissed me, Irish Rose."
Sage giggled. "Irish Rose?"
"Yes, that's my nickname for you," said Finn. "Do you like it?"
"I do, it's beautiful and romantic."
"That's why I gave it to you," said Finn. "You know, I never really thanked you for keeping me in check. If it weren't for you, there's a chance Ismay would be dead by now. Either by my hand or Niklaus'."
"You don't have to thank me, Finn," said Sage. "I love you, and that was why I did what I did."
"I'd still like to thank you."
Sage smiled. "Oh, I think you thanked me more than enough during the last several hours we were in this bed together." She then felt his hands on her belly under the sheets, making her laugh again. "Finn, that's not fair, I wasn't ready for that!"
"Welcome to being in a relationship with me, Sage," he said. "You have to be ready for when I surprise you."
Note: Yeah, it's not a big update, but it's an update.
