Chapter 13
Violet was genuinely scared when she didn't see Sunny sitting there.
"Olaf wouldn't hurt her" thought Violet as she raced down the stairs with Klaus at her heels unable to shake the feeling in her gut that something wasn't right here as she began her search for their sister. There was a twisting in her belly as she looked around for her sister, Klaus right behind her, but there was nothing. It was like Sunny had been there one moment, but then suddenly just disappeared. They knew she couldn't have gotten upstairs without them noticing, but as they looked in every closet there was nothing. As they looked under the furniture there was nothing still and the longer, she went without appearing the more that twisting in her gut began to tighten.
"Sunny, where are you?" exclaimed Violet doing what she could to remain calm as her mind seemed to flash back to that day when Sunny was born. Their parents had sat Klaus and her down and showing them their new sister, they told them it was their job to protect her. Violet felt like she was failing them now as she looked for Sunny suddenly feeling that she was not going to be alright when they found her.
"Sunny, this isn't funny…come out here" exclaimed Violet, feeling her heart as it beat from within her throat as tears welled in her eyes. As she said it, she entered the kitchen hoping to find Sunny sitting on the floor, but all she found was an empty room. That and the back door was wide open.
"Klaus come here. I think I might have found her" exclaimed Violet immediately going outside to the backyard that was somehow shrouded in shadow as Olaf's tower loomed over it and as she did Klaus was running right beside her.
"Where's my sister?" called Violet immediately as she saw the troupe standing around the yard as if they had been waiting on her to come.
Olaf stood at the center or at least, it appeared to be him until she got closer, but she couldn't dwell on that. Olaf wasn't important in that moment, Sunny was, her siblings were, and as they stood around watching her, Violet sensed they knew something. She could almost feel that they were somehow involved with her infant sister just disappearing and she wasn't going to let it stand. They would give her back and then Violet was going to get them all the hell out of there.
"Where's my sister" exclaimed Violet again, this time she could feel Klaus behind her seething in his silent way watching all of them as they stared at the tower above them though in that moment Violet didn't care to follow their gaze.
"Answer her. Where is our sister?" exclaimed Klaus in that moment launching himself over Violet to get to them, but as Violet held him back, she didn't know what they were going to do if they wouldn't tell them where Sunny was. Violet yanked him behind her as she came face to face with the strange Olaf lookalike.
"Where's my sister?" exclaimed Violet looking the man square in the face. He had the same shiny shiny eyes as Olaf and in that moment, Violet couldn't help thinking how she used to like looking into eyes just like those as Olaf made love to her, but she shook that way as she stared him down. It was then that Violet really looked into those eyes and the malice within them her heart pounding as she waited for some form of an answer. The answer she got though wasn't at all what she wanted.
"Patience is a virtue, Ms. Baudelaire, but from what I hear you've already given that to my brother" whispered the man, Violet knew he was trying to make her shrink away, but she didn't blink. Instead, Violet found herself stepping closer to him, and in that moment she wasn't afraid. She couldn't be afraid as she watched him watch her. With a firm tone she repeated her question, but still the man didn't budge.
"Look up, Ms. Baudelaire, you might find what you're looking for" whispered the man his mocking tone shaking her as she remembered the way they were each staring up at the tower, and when Klaus did the same Violet knew by the intake of breath she heard come from behind her.
Violet hadn't looked away from the man in front of her when she heard that sound. She didn't look away until Klaus grabbed her arm to make her turn her eyes to the sky. Violet was scared to take her eyes from him even as she knew whatever she was going to see couldn't possible be good. The breath went right out of her as she saw the cage hanging from the top of Olaf's tower. It was swaying in the wind as if it could fall free and fall to their feet at any moment. That was not the thing that shook her though as she strained her eyes up to see that cage and the prisoner it held. Sunny was inside that cage and though she couldn't see her clearly, she knew she wore a pout.
"You monsters…she's just a baby. Let her go" said Klaus immediately trying to attack the group again, but Violet once again managed to hold him back as the troupe surrounded them all at once. As the others took Klaus, the mysterious man took Violet by the throat as the big nosed man grabbed her from behind.
"I don't believe we had a proper introduction, Ms. Baudelaire, I'm Omar, Olaf's brother. And as for your sister, well, I wouldn't worry about her. Right now, I'd be more concerned for yourselves…take them" said Omar before he promptly hit Violet in the face making it all go black.
