Chapter 13 – Tick Tock
Florescent lights hummed in silence. It gated on her nerves.
A long-held breath escaped in a resigned sigh. She was tired.
"You should head home," murmured the raven-haired woman. "I can manage the rest of the reports here."
Sango sent her a sidelong glance, chin propped upon her palm. "I can stay. Two heads are better than one."
Kagome responded in kind, with an exasperated look of her own. "You can't keep Kohaku waiting; you've been home late almost every night this week."
Another sigh. "Fine," a resignation, "but I'm bringing my laptop home, so message me if you need help on the reports."
A convivial smile. "I have nothing else to do anyway. I can finish these. Now go home to your brother."
Sango made a show of packing her laptop anyway, and Kagome giggled at the other girl's pronounced movements. As she left the office with a goodbye wave, Kagome plunged straight back into her work.
Keyboard strokes echoed throughout the now empty office. As lights began their automatic shut-off, annoyance slithered its way in, making the only remaining occupant grumble in frustration. Seriously, I hate these stupid lights. Hello? I'm still here! Standing up, she walked the length of the hallway and back to her desk, reactivating the light sensors.
The hands of time ticked slowly. Hours passed, and by the time she checked the clock, it was already past midnight. Just great…
Wide eyes squinted in a menacing glare at the empty coffee cups atop her desk. Looks like I won't be sleeping any time soon.
At least the reports are done. Relinquishing the tension in her neck through a series of work-approved stretches, Kagome carefully typed up the finishing email before attaching the files. With a final keystroke of triumph, the send button was clicked.
