A/N Hi! Important information for old readers, I updated chapter 7-13 in one day, so please start reading from chapter 7. I have been updating mothly on AO3 and also have started posting ASLWOAS there while editting chapters. Also support the original Law Novel!
"Nice to meet you.~" She sang out."I'm Rei and this is my big brother Law." She introduced herself and the older boy.
"What are you doing here? This place is off limits to outsiders." He asked staring at the shinai in Rei's hands."Are you newcomers?"
Rei blinked before realising where he was looking. She glanced at the stick and then realised why he said that."Oh..Oh! Nonono, we're here for a sparring match." she then send Law a glare."Actually Law-nii was the only one supposed to fight, but he dragged me into it too."
Law slowly raised his right hand and slowly showed her the middle finger. A tick mark appeared on Rei's head as she threw the shinai at Law. "Fucker!" but Law easily caught it and even dared to smile at her with a smug smile. "I'm going to bury you someday." She promised while almost hissing at him.
"I'd like to see you try." He said smugly, clearly amused by her behaviour. Both of them completely forgot about Zoro.
The boy stared at them.'Weirdos.' He thought as he decided to leave them. The girl didn't look like she was strong, but as he was walking past the boy he noticed Kikoku who was leaning against the tree not far from Law.
"Wow, Is that a real sword!" He said excitedly. He was about to touch it, but Law stopped him by grabbing his wrist.
"Don't."
"I wasn't going to steal it." He glared at Law."I just want to hold it."
"No."
"Why not?"
"I don't need to give you a reason."
Rei stood there awkwardly watching the two glare at each other, so she went over and took the black scabbard and moved away from the two, she didn't want them annoying the sword. She didn't like touching Kikoku, she was scared of the cursed swords, but as long as it was in its scabbard she could kinda hold it. She didn't dare to hold it by the handle through.
"Why can she hold it!? She can't even use a shinai properly!" Zoro complained as he tugged his arm away from Law.
"She's my sister and she knows how dangerous the sword is unlike you." Law said, but Rei knew he wasn't happy that she took Kikoku, since he knew she was terrified of it.
Rei watched them arguing as she hugged the scabbard, she was confused, what was the point in this argument? She was getting worried.
"I know more about swords than she does."
"Than you would have known that that's a cursed sword."
"A cursed sword?" Zoro asked his eyes slightly widening with interest. It was weird to see such a young Zoro not knowing something about swords.
As Law was explaining to Zoro about cursed swords and other sword involved topics, she had realised that the two were becoming fast friends and she, well she was getting bored of their talk, also Kukoku was heavy. She placed it back against the tree, since it wasn't in any danger, and just left. She wasn't going to sit and listen to their 'How to correctly take care of one's sword' talk. It was weird enough, it almost sounded as if they were talking abo- nope not going there, stop perverted mind, you are 9 you are not allowed to think things like that ...yet.
As she walked around the area she realised that she had gotten lost. Slowly she put her head into her hands and let out a loud."Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck." Why does this shit keep happening to her. She knows her left and right, why can't she pay attention to her surroundings better? As she was groaning into her hands, she heard a cough. She almost freaking jumped out of her skin, why didn't she notice someb-riiight she shut her observation haki again. Fuck she could have used her haki to get back, such a dumbass.
She slowly lifted her face from her hands and stared at the person."Hello?" She said to the blue haired girl nervously.
"Who are you?"
"Is everybody rude here or something?" She didn't mean to say that out loud, but judging by the girls expression she had said that.
"I'm not the one standing in the middle of somebodies dojo yelling out 'fuck'." The girl, who clearly was Kuina said as she crossed her arms.
Rei blushed in embarrassment as she looked down."O-oh, I'm sorry. My name is Rei, me and my brother Law are here for a sparring match."
"That's better, I'm Kuina. Father did tell me I'll be fighting somebody today." She said the last part out loud.
"Most likely my brother, he's the one skilled with swords."
"What about you? You said you will be also participating, right?"
"Yeah, but I'm really bad with swords, Law-nii just wanted to mess with me. I prefer a long range fighting style."
"A long range?"
"Uuuh." Whoops." Y-yeah, you know like shooting from slingshots or throwing darts. That kind of stuff." She said making it sound childish. "Law-nii said I'm really good at it as long as I pay attention.~" She sang out adding 6+ childishness to herself.
"Figures…" Kuina huffed looking clearly upset. Most likely this little girl's brother didn't want her learning how to properly use a sword, because she was a girl. Most men she had met at the dojo had always made fun of her, so she wouldn't be surprised if it was the same with this girl.
"What?" Rei asked confused. Kuina shook her head.
"Nothing, don't worry about it."
Just as Kuina said that her father came." Ah, there you are Rei, you're brother was looking for you. Kuina, you're match is about to start."
"Hai." Both of them said, while Kuina's answer was more sharp, Rei's was more childish. Both of them followed after the man.
They entered the dojo and Rei quickly went over to Law, who had one of those sticks in his hands looking ready.
"Law-Nii.~"
"Got lost?"
"...No?"
"Got lost."
She pouted at him. She hated when he did that.
Rei sat down next to Zoro, she tried to copy the seiza style that he and the other students were doing, but her's was a bit more clumsy looking. Koushirou called for Kuina and Law to get into positions.
"Bow to the Gods." Both of them turned and gave a bow to...was it a shrine?...Rei didn't know that well.
"Bow to the opponent." Kuina and Law bowed to each other.
"Begin." As soon as those words left Koushirou's mouth, Law and Kuina charged at each other. Both were blocking each other's hits with their own.
Rei was the only one flinching whenever their shinai blocked each others hits. 'Wow, that's pretty loud...and uncomfortable…' She glanced to see that all the others kids sat there perfectly unflinching. They looked to be impressed by the fact that Law was fighting Kuina equally, while Zoro looked to be studying both their movements.
They were fast and had strong strikes. Rei really wanted to cheer for Law, but she wasn't sure how okay that would be in a dojo.
The fight took some effort from both sides. Both Kuina and Law were sweaty and out of breath as they kept trying to block each other's moves, but then Kuina was able to strike Law and push him onto the floor with her shinai.
"Stop!"
Law lied there looking clearly disappointed that he lost, but to the surprise of Rei he relaxed and stood up. Extending his hand for a handshake with Kuina who equally looked surprised before a smirk appeared on her face that matched Law's.
"Thanks for the match, it was great." He said.
"Thank you for fighting me, I learned a lot." She said to him.
"Next Match is Rei and Zoro. Please get into positions." Koushirou called out. Rei flinched as she watched Zoro take two sticks, or whatever they were called, into his hands.
She glanced at Law who went to her previous spot. He sat down into a perfect seiza style, instead of giving her a smug look he looked to be somewhat concerned for her. Nah, she was probably imagining it. She took one of those sticks.
"Bow to the Gods, Bow to the opponent. Begin!"
Rei would be the first to say that the rules never mentioned that she couldn't use observation haki, second Zoro apparently wasn't as fast as she thought he would be, third she really hated those stick noises.
Rei was better at dodging then striking back, so their fight mostly looked like Rei kept dodging while Zoro was getting frustrated that she wasn't using her stick, so the moment it went bad was when Rei tried blocking his attacking, she succeeded, but that made her slower to dodge the next strike which came from the second stick, knocking her to the ground.
"Stop!"
"Ugh…" A groan left her mouth. Surprisingly it didn't hurt as much as she thought it would be, sometimes she forgets that her body is supposedly sturdier than her previous one, which would have been broken long ago. She slowly got up, while holding her side. "Thank you for the match."She said as she extended her hand for a handshake that Zoro accepted.
"How were you able to read my moves?" He asked her.
"Instinct…?" She answered.
Let's just say Zoro was not convinced by her answer.
Rei had walked over to Law, decided to screw her dignity, and face first just fell onto his lap with a groan. Law stared at her for a moment before giving her a pat on the head as she curled up like a cat. Both ignored the looks Kuina and Zoro gave them.
At that moment Koushirou came over and sat down while facing them." You two did well. How long are you two staying on this island?" He asked them.
"We don't know yet, maybe a week or so." Law said, while continuing petting Rei like a cat.
"It depends on our Dad." Rei added, which was half a lie.
"Both of you are welcome to practice here, if you two are interested?" He asked them. Rei gave Law a pleading look, she didn't want to practice swordsmanship.
"I accept your generous offer, but my sister would like to stay out of practice." Law said as he watched Koushirou nod, clearly having no problem with the girl not participating.
"Why?" Kuina asked and you could tell by her tone she was not happy."Why don't you want to practice swordsmanship?" She asked Rei who looked at her nervously.
"Well, I just don't like it, my body can't handle fighting for so long and the heaviness of a real sword would just make me slower against opponents, as I told you before, I prefer long distance attacks. They are light, fast and I have distance from the dangerous areas." She explained before adding as an aftermath."If I ever were in a fight." because she was a dunderhead that doesn't know how to fucking shut up!
"She's really passionate about her darts." Was Law's reply, but his tone made it sound as if Rei was just playing around and was a delusional child.
"...I see."Koushirou said before looking at Kuina."Kuina, if somebody doesn't want to study swordsmanship it doesn't mean you can force them into it."
"I know that father!" She knew that, but she wasn't convinced yet that this girl just wasn't interested in swordplay, but...Her brother -the one called Law - seemed to not be somebody who wouldn't be sexist towards women. Maybe Rei really wasn't interested?
"Do not raise your voice at me Kuina." He said calmly to her, but she knew he was most likely angry with her.
"Yes, father."
"Um," Rei interrupted them nervously."Would it be possible for Kuina and Zoro to show us around the village?"
"Huh? But I can't slack off!" Zoro said looking annoyed.
"Hmm, I think one break day would do you two some good." Koushirou said."Looks after the two for today, maybe you'll learn something new on you're trip."
"Hai sensei."
When Koushirou left Zoro couldn't help but start grumbling."What could we possibly learn by walking around the village?"
"Idiot, he was talking about us learning from them not from the village." Kuina said while rolling her eyes.
"What did you say?!" Zoro yelled out annoyed as he pretty much growled at Kuina, before both just huffed at each other.
Law and Rei could already tell that this was going to be fun…
...And they were right, apparently the two couldn't even decide peacefully which way to go.
"I'm telling you let's go right to the training area I use!"
"And I'm telling you that we should go to the left, to the center of town!"
Law and Rei watched them go back and forth like a ping pong match, before Law finally had enough.
"Okay, stop. Me and Roronoa-ya will go right, while Blue-ya and Rei can go left and later we can meet up back at the dojo, is that alright with everybody?" He asked receiving nods."Good, lead the way Roronoa-ya."
"Pfft Hahaha."Rei couldn't help but laugh, honestly that phrase shouldn't be said by anybody.
"What's so funny?" Zoro asked confused.
"N-Nothing. Ignore me, j-just l-l-lead the way." Rei did her best not to choke on her spit. She was failing.
"Your sister is a weirdo." Zoro said to Law who just sighed.
"I know."
"Oi!" Rei cried out indigrated.
"Come on Rei, let's leave them." Kuina said as she grabbed Rei's hand and tugged her away from the boys.
"So why are you really here?" Kuina asked as without looking at Rei as they walked through the empty street.
"What do you mean? We already told you that our dad had some errands to run." Rei said as she tried not to panic.
"Yeah, you did. But that was a lie." Kuina said calmly.
"I wasn't lying." Rei did her best not to twitch.
"Are we honestly going to play this game right now? Your brother is good at lying, but you suck at it. Your body language betrays you pretty easily." Kuina explained. "Plus when you started talking about long range attacks your excitement gave you away."
"..."
"Father knows, but as long as you aren't going to do anything harmful he won't care. But ...I am curious, I promise I won't inform my father as long as it isn't harmful to the dojo." Kuina said as she finally looked at Rei.
"...Fine…..I want to stop something sad from happening, so I have to be here and close to the dojo...That's it, I can't give you details, but If I stop whatever is coming, I will tell you after, would that be okay?" Rei asked nervously, why was she chosen again? Did Bob want a disaster to happen?
"Something sad? Will it affect the students or my father?"
"No." It will affect you.
"Okay."
"Okay?"
"Okay."
They walked in silence for a few minutes before Kuina decided to break it. "Hopefully you two can leave soon."
"You don't like us?" Rei asked feeling somewhat hurt.
"Oh no, I like you both. I don't really have any female friends and your brother gave me a decent fight, but that's the problem."
"Huh? I'm sorry, I don't understand."
"My father is looking for suitable suitors for me." Kuina said as she glared up at the sky.
Rei blinked at her before he eyes widened and she let out "...Oh...Ooooh." in understanding. "You think he will look at Law as a potential suitor?"
"He was already fascinated by that cursed sword your brother has and he did give me a decent fight, so I believe that yes, he already is." Kuina said clearly not liking this.
"Does he have any others in mind?"
"Zoro."
"Huh. Why is he looking for a suitor for you?"
"Because he will only let a boy inherit the dojo, a girl apparently won't ever become a decent swordsman!" Kuina snapped at Rei, surprising her, but not scaring her.
"I see…" She wasn't going to say her thoughts, not this time. It was Zoro's fate to help Kuina.
"...Sorry, I'm just really tired…"
"Don't give up Kuina…" That's the best she can do right now.
"I'll try." Kuina said with a tired smile.
" We have been walking in circles for hours. We're lost."
"I'm telling you, the trees sometimes move, don't worry, it's this way!"
"Trees don't move!"
"How would you know!? Have you talked to a tree before?"
"What, no! Everybody knows that!"
Law was going to murder Zoro and then Rei, cause that little bitch knew, she fucking knew.
It had been a week...Also Cora almost burned down the harbor, but they don't talk about it. They have been camping out on their boat at night and walking around town during the day, Cora would try to gather information on any pirate activities around the area, so that he would be ready to book it and maybe send
a note to Sengoku, what can he say, his marine tendencies didn't disappeared yet.
Law, Zoro, Kuina and Rei would occasionally have meet ups to talk and train, except Rei would be practicing throwing darts. At one point, Zoro had convinced her to try throwing at him and he would have to dodge or block it with his stick - shinai - and surprisingly they bonded over trying to kill one another. Law had not been surprised. He and Kuina mostly spend time practicing movements and had occasional spars.
Finally it was the day of the 2000th match between Zoro and Kuina. Where Zoro had lost. Law and Rei hadn't been there because nobody told them and they were busy helping Cora, but when they were walking back to the boat they had spotted Kuina and Zoro going somewhere while carrying real swords.
"Aren't those you're friends?" Cora asked."Why do they have swords with them? Aren't they still learning?" He asked becoming more concerned by the second.
"Ssshhh Dad, use your power." Rei whispered to him."This is really important."
"Calm." A bubble surrounded before it disappeared. "Done, now they can't hear us, but shouldn't we stop them?"
"No. This is important for them." Rei said. "Honestly we shouldn't even be with them, but it's important for us to keep track of Kuina from this point on."
"Because she's the person you want to save?" Law asked, he had long since figured out that Kuina would be the one who died in Rei's story.
"Yeah."
When they reached the field they watched Zoro and Kuina from behind some trees and bushes. Zoro had 2 swords in his hands, while Kuina held the Wado Ichimonji in her hands.
Zoro moved first as he tried to strike Kuina, but she had blocked his sword, using the opening she created he used the second sword to slash close to her face, but luckily only was able to cut a bit of her hair.
"Are they crazy! They are going to get hurt like that! That cut almost slashed her face!" Cora said as he almost stood up, but was pushed down by Law and Rei.
"It's okay Cora! They won't hurt each other!" Rei told him.
Kuina had swung her blade close to Zoro's face, but he was lucky to block it with his sword. They both pushed each other back, giving each other distance. In the span of a second they charged at each other and kept trying to hit the other, blocking each others hits for a few minutes, but it was clear that Zoro was getting tired faster then Kuina.
"Two real swords must be heavy. It seems like you still lack a bit of stamina." Kuina said as she stared at Zoro who was panting heavily.
" Shut up!" Zoro yelled out angrily, which served to distract him long enough for Kuina to strike.
She turned the tip of the blade towards him-
Cora was about to move, but Rei and Law grabbed him by his sleeves."It's okay!"
-and plunged the sword into the ground close to Zoro's head.
"This is my 2001st win." She said with a smug smile as she slowly got off the boy and took out the blade from the ground.
"Damn! Shit. I can't accept this…" Zoro said to himself as he tried to hold back the tears, he wasn't going to cry no matter what!
"I'm the one who wants to cry because I can't accept it." That had made Zoro stop and stare at Kuina in confusion. What was she talking about? She beat him, she always beat.
"Girls... when we grow up, we become weaker than men. I'll probably be overtaken by you soon. You always said you'd become the best swordsman in the world." Kuina remembered her father's words. "My father told me that it's not possible for a woman. I know...I already know about this. But...I can't accept it! Zoro, it must be nice to be a man."
Zoro stood up, Kuina only spared him a glance before continuing. " I also want to become the world's greatest swordsman. " She admitted to him, then she slowly put her hand on her chest. "My chest is starting to grow out. If...If I was born a boy…" She said as tears fell from her eyes, she didn't notice the way Zoro was becoming angrier by each word she said.
"After beating me, how can you say such weak words! That's despicable! You've been my goal all this time!" Zoro yelled at Kuina as the girl stared at him with tears. "Zoro…" She said quietly, touched by his words.
"Whether you're a man or a woman...Is that what you're going to say when I beat you one day?! As if it wasn't because of my skills. It makes me, who's been training hard, look like a complete fool! Don't say things like that!" He walked towards her, clearly still angry by her words. "Promise me! One day either you or me will be the greatest swordsman in the world! " That had shocked Kuina enough to stop the tears from flowing as she stared at Zoro. "We will compete to see who does it!"
" Stupid, saying that even though you are weak." Kuina said with a smile. Zoro didn't say anything as he held out his hand for her, so they could seal the promise with a hand shake.
"It's a Promise!" Both of them said as they shook hands.
Rei was worried they were going to miss the moment, but no, the next day she and Law had been following Kuina all day, the girl had noticed, but hadn't said anything. Not yet. As it neared sunset Kuina went to go retrieve the whetstone, so that she could take care of Wado Ichimonji.
"Law."
"Yea?"
"Get ready to use room."
"Got it."
Both of them were staring from the storage window. As Kuina was going down the stairs, she suddenly started to fall as the whetstone fell out of her hands.
"Kyaa!" Kuina let out a surprised scream.
"ROOM." a blue sphere surrounded the area and switched Kuina with a rock, while Law caught her.
"What the?! What was that!?" Kuina asked as she got up and glared at the two. "What did you do!?"
"Clearly we saved your life." Law said like the asshole that he was, while Rei couldn't help but hug Kuina tightly.
"You're okay! Thank god you're okay!" Kuina didn't die! They were able to save her!
"Can somebody explain to me what's going on!?" Kuina was clearly getting impatient now.
"I'll explain everything, through you might not believe me." Rei said. " I did promise after all."
"You're actually going to tell her?"
"Only stuff that involved her." She explained.
"That's a bad idea Rei."
" I know, but I do need to tell her some stuff."
"Hello, I'm still here." Kuina said as she tapped her foot and crossed her arms.
"We know." They said at the same time.
"Okay okay, so listen, I know somebody who had knowledge of the future, they shared some of their knowledge with me and so I came to fix stuff." That was half a lie, but still not a full lie. "So this person warned me about your…"
So Rei told Kuina everything she knew about her and even her death. She also told her about how Zoro had inherited her sword and will and worked hard to fulfill their dream in a world where Kuina died. It took her around an hour to explain as Kuina listened in silence, Law had also stayed to listen to the story since he didn't know it.
"...And that's basically it. I can't tell you more, knowing this stuff is risky enough."
"...All of this is crazy...but you really did know everything correctly and you knew I would fall." Kuina sighed clearly conflicted, but decided to trust Rei." I will trust you, but if you break my trust I will personally hunt you down."
"Understood." Okay so Kuina was scary.
"So Zoro had my katana...That idiot...I'm glad." Kuina said with a soft smile and slightly teary eyes.
"He is an idiot, but he's your idiot, right?" Rei said teasingly hoping for Kuina to blush and deny it, but instead she was met with two blank stares from Law and Kuina."What?"
"Did you really not figure it out yet?" Law asked a she shook his head, as if disappointed in Rei.
"What?"
"I thought it was obvious." Kuina muttered.
"What what!?" Rei was getting annoyed and extremely curious as to what they meant.
"Blue-ya doesn't like Roronoa-ya romantically." Law explained and honestly, how would he know that?
"Oh, that's a shame, but okay. So the relationship is platonic?" Rei asked hoping for that at least, cause a big sister Kuina and a lil bro Zoro relationship sounded great to her!
"Well, um yeah, I guess? but that isn't the real reason." Kuina said looking uncomfortable.
"...?"
"I don't like guys, I like...girls." Kuina said nervously as Rei stared at her.
"...What? Really? Wait how does Law know and I don't!?" Rei asked now staring at Law.
"Are you blind? Remember when we went to that small ramen place?" Law asked, that situation had happened a few days ago. Rei had been dragged there with Law after Zoro and Kuina found out that she never had ramen before.
"Yeah?"
"Remember how nervous AND red she was when that slightly older girl was talking to her?" Law explained reminding her that when they received their order a girl sat down with Kuina and kept talking to her about something, but Rei was so busy enjoying her food that she really didn't pay attention.
"It's not my fault she was so pretty…" Kuina muttered as she blushed slightly in embarrassment.
"Oh...Ooooooh! Wait then why is your dad setting you up with boys?"
"He doesn't know and he can't know!" Kuina yelled out. " You, Law and Zoro are the only ones who know."
"Wait, does that mean Zoro figured it out faster than me!?" Rei asked with a pout.
"I told him yesterday." Kuina explained.
'Oh, it must have been after their promise, since we left after that so that they could have some privacy.' Rei thought.
"But then what are you going to do if he marries you off?" Rei said, but flinched slightly not liking how her words sounded as if Kuina was being sold off.
"I don't know...I might run away…" Kuina said. "I love the dojo, but I need to get strong enough for my father to acknowledge me as the heir."
"If you need help, we could help you?" Law offered.
"No, you did enough, I'm really grateful to you two for saving me. I would have died a meaningless death than. Will you be leaving today?" She asked in a sad tone.
"Yeah, we still have another person to save, so we can't stay long." Rei said.
Kuina bowed to them."Thank you, I hope we will meet again soon." She raised her head, but as soon as she did Rei tackled her in a hug.
"I'll miss ya Kuina! Do you're best and ignore those stupid remarks from you're father. Look after Zoro too, help him get stronger."
"Keep each other safe from harm." Law commented.
"We will. Will you say goodbye to Zoro too?" Kuina asked.
"No." Both said at the same time.
"We'll meet again someday anyways." Rei explained.
"He's going to be angry."
"So?" Law asked earning a laugh from Kuina.
"Do you think we did the right thing?" Law asked Rei as they were walking towards the port.
"Don't know...But what did you expect me to do, just sit still when we could have helped?"
" So are you a hero now?" Law asked with a raised eyebrow.
" Nope. Just somebody who wants to see what'll happen if the world changes slightly."
"You really should stop lying to me and yourself."
"I don't know what you mean Lawpaw." Ah deniel, her best friend. Like hell she's going to break that friendship up.
When they reached the port they found Cora tied up in rope. He looked up and stared at them for a moment before giving a sheepish smile. "Help please?" The child and teen just sighed as they walked up to him and started untying the clumsy idiot.
"So is everything okay now?" Cora asked them, he was still slightly upset that they didn't need his help, but considering it would look suspicious for him to follow the kids around, he had stayed here.
"Yeah. Kuina is safe and as long as she keeps being save everything is going to continue being okay." Rei said with a hopeful tone as she and Law finished untying Cora.
"How did you even tie yourself up like that?" Law asked Cora.
"Um...I tripped over a snail…" He said while lowering his head to hide his face in his hands from embarrassment as his face flushed red.
"A snail…?" Law repeated staring at Cora before just dropping the ropes and going on the ship, completely done with this shit as Rei just laughed so hard that she lied on the floor with tears in her eyes.
"It's not funny!" Cora whined.
"It is!" Rei said through her laughter.
"I'm leaving you idiots here!" Law complained as he got the boat ready to leave.
"Wait no!" Both Rei and Cora yelled as they got up and ran to the boat, but both tripped over the rope and fell into the boat instead.
"..." Law was not amused.
