Author's Note:
This is it. This is the moment I think we've all been waiting for (I know I have.) The end of Season 1...and after this, the beginning of Season 2! So much more to reveal. All crazy shit to happen, so hang on guys. The ride isn't over yet. :)
As always, Season 1 belongs to the genius mind of Max Landis. Everything with Amity or any twists that were not in the show, but that are in this story belongs to me, another crazy genius.
EDIT: I've had trouble trying to come back to this story because of a hateful comment I got on Tumblr months and months ago in April about this story, but I'm back now and I will hold strong on my promise of finishing this story...despite how long it will take me.
A Holistic Adventure
BBCA Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Two Sane Guys & One Chick Doing Normal Things
Amanda and the Rowdy 3 are on the road, playing music in their van as Martin drives. Gripps is painting Amanda's nail's a bright neon green and gives her a smile, which she exchanges back. All seems to be right until Martin suddenly slams on the brakes, causing the tires to screech and the van to come to a stop.
"Now, you guys smell that?" He asked, looking to them in the back. The guys nodded.
"What?" Amanda asked, not really understanding. "What's wrong?"
"Something bad happened."
Todd and Dirk look to Amity, wide eyed. She was literally on fire and looked like Jean Grey right out of the X-Men comics. Right as the bald men entered the room and aimed their weapons at them, she managed to stop them in mid air before blasting the men back and finding herself on fire.
Surprisingly, it didn't hurt. For some reason it felt so...normal to her. Like it was a part of how she was. She found the key to the cage that was holding her back and now she was free to fly.
"Holy shit!" Todd said, looking at her.
Next thing they knew gun shots were heard as Gordon ran into the room, but stopped at the sight of Amity before fleeing again. Estevez, one of the police officers, was shooting after Gordon and walked into the room, stopping at the sight of the girl on fire.
"What the fuck is that?" He yelled.
Farah was not far behind him and came into the room seeing the sight before them. The fire around Amity quickly faded away, knowing her friends were now safe. Estevez turned his gun on Farah as everyone spoke at once, demanding him to listen to them.
"They're the ones you want. I am on your side." Farah said, talking about the bald men.
"There are no sides. Drop the gun, now!" Estevez yelled at her.
"You're making a mistake."
"You pointed your weapon at a police officer."
"Just listen to what we're trying to tell you!"
Estevez wouldn't. "You have to the count of 5 to lay down your weapon."
Dirk suddenly fell to the ground, causing Todd to catch him. Farah did as told and ran over to check on Dirk. Amity looked on with worry. "He's been shot. A bullet... Apply pressure here, okay." Farah looked to Dirk. "They're gone now, and we're-we're going to be okay now."
"You sure about that?" Estevez said, pointing two guns at them.
Seeing the blood come out from Dirk's wound and knowing Estevez refused to listen to them made Amity whip her head around, igniting the fire around her once again. The police officer looked shocked, but tried to remain standing his ground. "Stop whatever you're doing now and go into the cages!" He yelled at her.
Amity began to stand up again, making her way towards him. "Why don't you actually stop yapping your mouth off and shooting that stupid hunk of metal around and actually hear us out?"
"I am a police officer and you are-"
She moved her hand which sent him flying back straight into one of the cages, locking him in. "I don't care what you are. You shot an innocent person and now you're going to sit in this cage and hear us out, okay?!"
Farah turned to look at Amity. "Could you do that and that fire thing this whole time?"
The fire seemed to fade away as she replied. "Yeah."
The corgi dog from early enters the room and all eyes land on it along with Lydia on all fours following behind. "Found our missing girl again." Dirk commented.
The dog began barking at them. Amity turned and looked at her. "Sorry Lydia, but this detective shot at the machine multiple times and destroyed it."
"What did you guys do to her?!" yelled Estevez from his cage.
"We didn't do this...a crazy group of men did." Todd answered him, having far enough of all this.
The detective slumped down. "Can someone just please tell me what's going on? Please..."
Amity ran over to the machine and looked it over. Todd began to explain it all in detail to the cop, having him and Farah give him weird looks. "So wait...that's what happened?"
"This is going to need fixing." Amity said.
"Good...then we know just where to go."
Arriving at the Spring Estate, they all get out of the police car with Estevez helping them. Amity notices Dirk about to faint and draps him around her shoulder. "Whoa there. Can't have you giving out on me just yet."
"I keep forgetting how strong you are for a girl."
"Yeah, well, it's a good thing you have me around." Amity smiled at him. "Otherwise, who knows what would have happened to you guys."
Inside the basement where some barrels of wine were stored, the group listened as Farah began to talk. She knew the compound better than anyone else. "There are 6 entrances to the house. There is no way we can cover all of them. SO if anyone comes in-"
"Wait!" Estevez interrupted. "Would they come here?"
Todd was leaned over a table, looking worn out. "This thing is their most scared...thing. They're gonna be mad we took it."
"So...they know what's under this place? What's under this place?"
"A place with a..." Dirk shook his finger uncontrollably, starting to get worse. Amity looked to him concerned. "Stuff!"
Farah opens a draw in the barrels and different kinds of guns pop up. Estevez goes up and cocks a gun. "Ms. Black, how much of this is legal?"
She begins to mumble. "There are a number of loopholes, you know, legally, regarding what constitutes a militia with relevance to state law, and in accordance with-"
"You know what- never mind. This is the least legal shit I've done all day."
Everyone grabs a gun and Amity helps Dirk walk around, making their way into another room.
"If this is a time machine, can I go back? " Estevez asked.
"Go back? Where?" Todd replied.
"Save my partner."
Amity gave him a sad look. "Some things can't be changed."
Making their way to the end of the hallway, they all gathered into a room. Todd, who carried the time machine in his hands, set it down on a table.
"Lydia first." Dirk said, before tripping over and taking Amity with detective came over and helped her with him.
Farah went up to Todd, watching him fumble with the machine. "You sure you know what you're doing?"
"No. I only saw them do this once. We jump them, then they switch places."
"Make them switchy. Sw-switch." Dirk was starting to lose it at this point. He looked to Amity. "H-Help him."
She ran over and helped Todd set it in correctly. The machine powered on and electricity crackled from it. Farah and Estevez gave weird looks. "Is it suppose to do that?" She asked.
"I'm not qualified to answer that question." Todd replied, hoping he had done something right.
"I think it's working." Amity said.
Estevez looked to the machine in a huff, desperate to change things. "Why can't I go back? It's already on. I could go back. I could- I could fix this - fix everything!"
Todd looked to Farah. "Bring Lydia here."
"Why are we even bothering with this? I could go back and stop her from ever being kidnapped?"
He just wasn't getting it and it started to make Amity a bit mad, pulling him aside. "Risky things happen with time travel. How do you think we got into this mess to begin with? Idiots who didn't understand what they were doing got a hold of something they shouldn't have and ended up doing bad things."
Farah brought Lydia to one side of the machine as the dog holding Lydia's soul stood at the other end. Todd started up the machine as both women put each being's hand or paw on the device. Pulling the crank, the room lit up as Lydia suddenly passed out and the dog too.
"Hey! You killed her!" Estevez yelled.
"No, trust me. Switch them now."
Amity did as told and took the dog to the other side. Farah and Estevez carried Lydia. "She's not breathing." Farah said, looking concerned. "Is this supposed to happen?"
"It's gonna work." Todd assured them.
"Just do it already!" Amity snapped, holding the dogs paw to the device again.
The machine lit up again, knocking them all back this time. Seeing the dog perk up in her arms, Amity smiled before it bit her. "Ouch! You bitch!" The dog ran off. "You're welcome!" She yelled out to it.
Lydia was still unconscious in Farah's arms, making everyone concerned, until her eyes opened. "Farah?"
"Lydia?"
"Oh my god!" The girl sobbed into her shoulder.
Dirk, Todd and Amity smiled to each other. "It worked."
"Holy shit!" Estevez exclaimed happily.
"I'm so stupid. I should have never gone to that guy's house. I knew you could do it. The moment I saw you, I knew everything was gonna be all right." The girls hugged each other again before Lydia turned to face the others. "Thank you so much."
"We did the best we could for you, Lydia." Dirk said, smiling at her.
Looking at the detective and Todd, she glared remembering. "These guys threw me off a bridge."
They gave awkward looks and Amity just nodded, trying to hold back a chuckle over the familiar incident. Estevez helped Lydia to her feet making sure she was fine with her smiling back. Noises of gun shots interrupted them, causing Farah to grab a gun with Estevez joining in.
"Farah, where are you going?"
"Stay here!" She yelled back.
"I think those bald men are here." Amity told them, preparing to protect the others incase they weren't able to hold the ground.
"We have to fix the machine." Todd said, getting up from off the ground and reaching for it. "We have to send it back."
"Send it back?" Lydia exclaimed. "We should destroy the stupid thing!"
Dirk spoke. "No, it won't work. It needs this. It needs to go back where it came from the start the loop again."
However, Lydia wasn't going to listen to it. She was angry, and for a good reason. "They put me in a dog. I watched him feed me dog food. I've been sleeping on the streets for a week. I was so hungry, I ate a rat!"
Dirk looked to her, trying to get her to understand. "If we don't send the machine back in time, you won't exist."
"You're the center of the loop. It all revolves around you. T-This has to go back to your dad so that he can try and manipulate the future and eventually meet your mom and sex with her and-"
"Todd, you can stop it right there." Amity said, thinking she didn't need to hear anymore at this point.
"Everything's spinny."
"Oh god, not you too." She shook her head, seeing the guys would have to rely on her.
"You guys are both dying." Lydia pointed out.
Todd was struggling to get up and stand on his feet. "No, no we're not. We're okay." He said before falling to the ground.
Lydia looked to Amity as their only hope. "We have to get out of here. Go all Jean Grey and get us out."
Amity sighed, grabbing her by the shoulders. There was only one way to get her to understand all this. " dad did all of this to save you. He died to save your life. Okay. Not many kids are fortunate enough to have parents who care for them like your dad does for you. Then again, some can't ever see their parents again and try to make amends." Now Lydia was in her situation with no parents. "Do this for your dad, okay?"
Lydia was silent for a bit before replying. "Okay. What do I do?"
The girls looked over to Dirk who held up a device for the machine. Amity grabbed it and they tried to figure out where it went before finding it's place. "How do we turn it on?"
"Turn the crank."
"Wait!" Dirk said, making them stop. "The machine's still broken."
The guys realized they would have to get up and do it themselves, struggling to get to the machine. "Maybe if I could just-"
"Amity!" Todd shirked.
She turned and barely knock the guys back with her powers. Realizing she must have run into a low, her eyes went wide. "Shit!" Todd and Amity began to charge towards the bald men, using physical force to beat them. One fired an arrow right at Lydia, which Dirk seemed to take to take the hit for. Todd was slammed to the wall in a choke hold and Amity was holding the other with his bow to his throat.
"Stop right now! I swear to God, I'll smash this stupid thing into a billion pieces!" Lydia shouted, getting their attention. Everyone in the room stopped what they were doing instantly, releasing their victims.
The bald men slowly walked up to her, seeing Lydia loose her confidence. "You'll smash it? And then what? What then, Lydia Spring? What then?"
Amity looked to the side seeing someone come in and a grin came to her face. The bald man noticed and asked. "Who's that Ed?" It was Bart and Ken dressed as bellhops.
"Yo." She said, shooting one of the guys in the head.
The other launched an arrow at her, but she caught it midair, causing him to get electrocuted. Bart walked up to Dirk and Amity jumped in front of him. "Amity, I have to do it right this time." She said, aiming her gun.
"Bart- no."
"Bart!" Ken said, getting her attention as he looked upon the base of the machine. "This is it. T-These are the guys that hired me the day you found me! And this thing this is the thing that they hired me to build."
"Oh goody, that means you can fix it then." Amity remarked.
Ken grabbed the other part of the machine from Lydia as he put it in place, laughing happily. "Yes, it's my destiny." He said, mysteriously dramatic. Being to work on it and Bart being distracted by it, Todd was helped up by Lydia and Amity sat with Dirk helping him write the letter for Patrick Spring.
"I think I finished it. Bart, this is why you brought me here." Ken said, laughing as she pulled him aside.
"I have one bullet left." She told him, thinking her destiny was to still kill Dirk. That had to be the reason.
In that moment Dirk and Amity slowly made their way to the machine, trying to get it started. However, with a gun aimed to his cheek, he stopped.
"Bart, don't make me fight you." Amity said, trying to give her friend a chance. "I will kill your ass, even without my powers right now."
"I gotta do this, Amity. I have one bullet left and it's because it's meant for him."
"No you don't. Didn't you tell me you're supposed to kill bad people?" She asked. "Does Dirk seem like a bad person?"
Bart kept her gun aimed at him, her expression changing slightly before turning behind her and shooting the bald man getting back up. "Weird." She turned back and tried firing her gun at him again, but all the bullets were out. Dirk realized and looked surprised. "Okay. Bye Dirk, Amity. Oh, and thanks for releasing us from that place and all." Bart looked back to Ken. "Let's get out of here. These people are nutjobs." Ken waved before exchanging a shrug with Todd.
"Were you really going to let her shoot me?!" Dirk barked at Amity.
She sighed with arms crossed. "Chill. I knew she only had one bullet left and couldn't kill you. Bart only kills bad people and you are far from it." Seeing all the blood he was covered in now, it explained the blood on the letter. Everyone gathered around the machine helping him. "On 3; 1, 2, 3!" They all pulled the crank together, making the machine spark as they sent it back to the past, continuing the loop.
"Solved it." Dirk said before passing out.
"Dirk! Hey, come on. Wake up!" Amity said, looking to him with concern. "He's lost a lot of blood. He needs to go to the hospital."
Just in the nick of time, the Rowdy 3 came crashing through along with Amanda and helped rescue them. Gathering in the back of their van, the first place they went to was the hospital. Amity said she would stay with Dirk by his side since Todd refused, still made about him lying.
Things were changing again, Amity could feel it.
Standing inside the hospital room, Amity was watching over the detective who was still unconscious. She hoped he would pull through, feeling concern for him. The doctor's said he would be okay, but she couldn't help but worry. Having no one else in her life except her friends, she couldn't afford to lose anyone else.
Finding herself chuckling over how attached she had grown to him, Amity began to speak to him. It's not like he would be able to hear a word she said after all. "It's funny...how much we have changed in such little time. Before I was pushing you around and acting cold towards you, hiding who I was inside, but now... now you've changed me. You made me feel comfortable to be myself and live up to my true potential."
She felt tears falling from her eyes, causing her to cry out. "Oh god, I probably look really stupid right now, but- I think I like you and your British butt." Feeling her heart pound, she gave him a kiss on his forehead, hoping he wouldn't wake up in this moment. It was going to be super awkward if he did. "Thank you." Amity said, looking back to him with a smile. "You're a gift to this universe as well."
Seeing someone new walk in, Amity's warm expression became a dark one. "Why are you here?"
Riggins held his hands up, slowly walking in. "I heard what happened and came to pay my respects. I don't want to start anything."
"Really? Cause from the last time we saw you, it seemed like you wanted to start something." Amity said, arms crossed. She looked behind him. "I see you learned your lesson and didn't bring that idiot with you this time. I might've had to rearrange his face."
Riggins sighed, giving her a sad look. This actually made a bad feeling come over her. "What? What is it?"
He sat down in a chair, trying to contain himself. It was awhile before he could speak. "In the beginning, it was just an idea. I wanted- I wanted so badly to believe there was something bigger, a bigger pattern, bigger meaning. I knew when I first met you and Dirk that I found it." This made Amity raise a brow in confusion. "It was real, it was all real and you were proof." He sighed. "You both are what you say you are and I'm so proud of you two."
Riggins got up and began to walk away, causing Amity to call out. "Wait!" He stopped in his tracks. "Whats wrong? I can sense something is wrong, Riggins."
He turned to her, giving a sad smile. "I'm sorry, I did all I could do. Take care of each other."
This made Amity looked wide eyed, wondering what was going on. Dirk had finally woken up and seeing her, called out. "Amity?"
She turned and looked to him with a smile. "Hey, you're finally awake."
"Where's Todd?" He asked.
"He went back home. I've been here watching over you though, someone has to. Otherwise you're going to get into who knows what kind of trouble." She said, chuckling.
Dirk looked up at her, surprised. "You've been here with me the whole time? How long have I been out?"
"Not that long. Just a day."
"A day?!"
"Kidding."
He gave a sigh of relief and looked to her with a questioning look. "Are you okay?"
"Y-Yeah, just tired. I think I'm still drained after everything that happened. Not using my powers in such a long time, it takes a lot out of me." She yawned, feeling like she hadn't fully recovered yet. Remembering she kept passing out in the chair every now and then, but it wasn't enough. "I could use some fresh air. You wanna go out for a walk if you think you can handle it? I think you can go home now."
"Sure." He replied with a smile.
Walking outside, they talked about everything that happened. Dirk was proud he solved the case and wouldn't stop talking about how much fun it was. If only he had heard what Riggins said about them being who they were, a detective and a normal woman, it would have made him grinning.
They walked to the bus stop outside of the hospital and waited for a bus. However, they were surprised to see a familiar face, causing a smile to come to Amity's face.
"Todd? You're here?" Todd nodded. "But the case is over."
"How's your shoulder?" He asked.
"It's terrible actually. Look, I don't understand. Did you want something from me or I can't help you. I-I can't do anything to help your situation or what I said."
"I don't need help." Todd said, taking a backpack off his shoulders and opening it up. He pulled out Dirk's iconic yellow jacket, handing it to him. "Here, I got this from your apartment." Before handing him a black t-shirt. "It's a Mexican Funeral t-shirt. I don't have many left, so try not to get shot at in it."
"Look, I am sorry, but I don't understand. You're What do you want? Why are you here?" Dirk said, still completely lost.
Amity decided to stop being silent and walked up to them. "I think what Todd is trying to say in his way is that he is sorry and wants to be your friend." He nodded. "I know you all too well."
"I'm here because I'm your friend. Besides, I don't want to miss out on when the next case starts." Todd said, smiling. Dirk looked surprised and touched.
Amity punched Todd's arms happily. "I knew you'd come around, asshole!"
Dirk was at a loss for words before looking to the shirt. "Didn't you say this band hated you?"
"Yeah, well We're late. Farah wants to meet up."
The four of them gathered together in a dinner booth, eating breakfast and talking business. Dirk and Todd sat together while Farah and Amity sat on the opposite side. "Once Estevez gives us the all clear, some people are going to ask us some questions."
"Undoubtedly. And how do we answer them?" Dirk asked.
"Yeah, we can't tell people about the time machine. We'll sound insane." Todd pointed out.
"We don't want to sound insane." Amity added in.
"We want to sound like sane guys."
"And a chick."
"So sane, we're boring."
"Yeah, two boring, sane guys, and a chick having a normal time."
"Let's say, best-case scenario, we come out of this not arrested, despite all the deaths. What then?" Dirk asked.
The next thing Farah said surprised them all. "I'd like to make an investment in your detective agency."
Dirk began to mumble happily. "I accept your proposal as my venture capitalist. Proof of concept has clearly already been established. But I remain quite firm on the signage. A brass plaque "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" name recognition and all that. I wouldn't want to muddy it with a jumble of 'Farahs','Todds' and 'Amity's.' It's cleaner this way. And how much can I expect me to say yes to?"
Amity stuck her tongue out at him as Todd spoke up. "If she's your partner, I don't think it's fair to nix her name."
"No, I-I'd prefer my name to remain off the - name."
"It's settled then." Dirk looked to the girl sitting in front of him. "And, Amity, I feel like you're no longer an assistant. I'm promoting you to ward."
She gave him a confused look. "What?"
"Isn't that like a nanny?" Todd asked.
"Yeah."
Amity's face scrunched up, glaring at him before laughing. She was going to take it under the meaning of being his protecter, which she didn't mind. The friends began to laugh and joke around with each other and for the first time ever, Amity felt completely happy and whole. She was able to be herself and had friends, a family and everything was going well.
But she knew that when things seemed to be at their happiest, something bad was just around the corner waiting to start again.
Recalling that feeling she got when Riggins visited.
"So if we do this-" Farah said, continuing their conversation.
"We're already doing it."
"How do we find a case?" Todd asked.
"Just let yourself feel it."
"Feel it?" Farah asked, finding it hard to believe.
"I have to go to the bathroom." Todd announced, leaving them.
Dirk looked over to Amity and noticed the look on her face. Horror and confusion was written all over it. "What's wrong?" Amity asked her.
"I have a bad feeling about something." She said, looking up at him.
Suddenly seeing Dirk's face change as he began to sense the same thing, they both excused each other from the table to talk alone. Farah looked at them confused, but remained sitting at the table. They both walked outside.
"Dirk, Riggins came to see you and me at the hospital. Something seemed off about him, as if he lost a battle. He was acting odd. I think something bad is going to happen, I know you feel it too!"
Dirk nodded. "Yeah, I feel it."
"A war is going to happen. I think they are coming for us."
Dirk grabbed her hand and they began heading towards an alleyway, feeling drawn to it. The detective picked up a paper of Dux Lujor and Amity turned to see Friedkin saluting them with a grin. "Oh, hell no!" She yelled, making her way to attack him only for him to pull out a device and throw it onto her, making her drop to the floor instantly.
It felt like her energy was being controlled. A sense of panic and familiar fear came over her. Only one person knew how to control her like that. "He said that would work! Mr. Priest sends his warmest greetings to his favorite subject. You'll be seeing him real soon." Friedkin said, smiling smugly to her.
And off they went, whisked back into the clutches of Project Blackwing. Amity could feel everyone was putting up a fight, but to no avail.
What was worst- Mr. Priest was back with it. That means there would be no chance of escape this time.
A/N: And we've made it. I can't wait for you all to see what I have planned out for Season 2. Sorry it took me long to get back to this. Let me know your thoughts on it. Thanks!
