Chapter 13

Scotty licked his dry lips, his soul feeling pain, seeing his friend like this. He looked up at Kirk as he stepped forward towards him and spoke his last words to him.

"Jim, for the love of God, do not use those torpedoes"

Scotty could only hope he listened to his words of wisdom. In his heart he knew the captain was listening, but he also knew Kirk was often incapable of going against his instincts. As Scotty handed his Pad to Kirk and walked away, he looked back at his little helper's shocked look upon his face as he stood there. After a brief pause the little alien looked up at Kirk and also handed a Pad to Kirk, and they left together with Scotty putting his hand on his shoulder in a gentle supportive manner. Leaving Kirk alone with the guilt of his choice he had made, the stubborn captain looked at the floor. He paused for a moment. With everything happening in his life, he questioned his judgement of the situation. Did he just make a mistake?
His blue eyes filled with confusion as the computer announced:

"Attention. Warp core anti-matter containment check in three minutes"

Kirk went to his quarters to change out of his pullover suit and into his usual uniform. Captain's cabins along with first officers had a much larger living space one large room with a king size bed. Once changed he made his way to the Bridge.

Cassia made her way to the turbolift taking it down to the bottom of the ship, once the doors opened, she stepped out. A Sector 31 personnel member stood handing everyone their passcode number for their quarters. Cassia stepped forward.

"Name?"

She answered back with a confused look on her face;

"Cassia"

The guy raised his left brow at her answer, he looked at his holding pad in his left hand.

"Surname?"

She swallowed the lump in her throat and laughed nervously at him, she did not want to say it aloud for people to hear. Tensing up, she avoided giving him her name, through fear of hearing a "Cinnamon Blake" joke (like the ones from her childhood).

"Seriously? How many other people have that name, surely you could find me?"

The guy tutted in annoyance and typed her name onto the Pad. She watched his finger press against the transparent device. He looked up at her and back at the pad inspecting her profile picture making sure it was her.

"Lieutenant Cassia B-"

Cassia instinctively stepped forward and shouted at him. She was subconsciously reacting to hearing her name. After years of negative conditioning, Cassia had become defensive upon hearing her full name aloud. She knew it was not her mother's fault taking her father's name, but her two names had caused ridicule in her youth. Due to the sensitivity of her past experiences, she preferred her name not being said. The less people who knew about it the better. The guy head quickly shot up as he looked at her.

"Yes! That's me!"

Chuckling nervously at him, he handed her a small white card with a six-digit code on it. Taking the item, he adjusted his voice to inform her of the information she needed.

"This is your code please remember it as it cannot be changed. If you forget it the Section 31 Admin Officer will need to reset it and give you a new code, causing unwanted delays to the productivity of the Enterprise. You room number is ninety-nine. Understood?"

Cassia nodded her head at him and walked of down the shiny white corridor looking at the big black numbers beside the doors. Looking left and right she watched as people walked past her going off to their destinations. Others were heading off into their rooms, some even making out with their partners as they went inside. Cassia blushed and looked away curious what her room was going to be like. Finally, after what felt like forever, she made it to her room stopping she stood in front of the door. Her room was in the middle, there was still numerous rooms continuing on down the path. Cassia looked at her code seeing the buttons on the number pad. The buttons were white with a blue glow on the symbols. She entered her six-number password, after pressing the last button it made a low 'beeping' noise. She stepped back as the door slid to the left with a 'whooshing' noise. Cassia eyes widened in surprise at the room in front of her she stepped inside the door walking slowly. It closed behind her but she was pre-occupied, taking in the surroundings of her new quarters. She smiled wildly speaking aloud to herself in the cosy confines of her small quarters.

"Finally, home sweet home..."

Her walls were white, the floor had a beige carpet with a small square window above her bed to allow her to see the stars it had a low green curtain on it to block the view if she wished. Her large black rucksack was on her single bed, awaiting her the quilt and pillows was a plain blue colour matching her uniform the sheets were a cream colour. Cassia unzipped the bag turning it upside down, the contents poured out onto the bed in a giant heap. Cassia smiled and started putting stuff away her clothing in the white and silver wooden chest of three drawers. The crew members did not get a wardrobe only Captain, she put drawing pad and essentials on top of it, her wash items in the small washroom all she got was a shower, sink and toilet with a small cupboard on the wall with a few cream towels. Beside her bed was a small portable rectangle black intercom, which allowed her to speak to visitors before granting them access to the room. She looked on her bed seeing her Pad waiting for her to log in.

Pad was an acronym for Personal Access Display Device, Pad for short a hand-held computer interface consisting of a large touchscreen display and minimalistic manual interface or control panel (generally only one or two buttons), the typical Pad was used for a variety of functions, including logging crew manifests, compiling duty rosters or diagnostic reports, entering personal data, and/or accessing library computer systems using the LCARS Interface. Varying in size, shape and specification, Pads were often distinguished by the species of their manufacturer or user. United Earth and Federation Starfleet Pads were generally flat and rectangular in shape. It had a sliver metal rectangle shaped to hold it on the left side with one rectangle button and a small circle one to turn it on and change channels. The rest was a see-through screen that turn illuminate blue shades when active.

Cassia sat down and pressed it, a log in screen appeared saying 'Enter Code' Cassia assumed it meant her door code, so she typed it in. It showed an 'Access granted' upon entering it, Cassia smiled as it showed her many things. Her rota from the week, limited information on people, information of the ship and data plus messages to other people. The entertainment part had, movies, games and music which shocked her as she was not expecting so much on this device.

Cassia quickly pulled back; she could not get distracted now she needed to get to work getting out of her pullover suit which she dumped onto her bed. Getting up with a sigh she stretched her weary bones and got into her blue uniform. She then picked up her pad turning she walked towards her door. Leaving the room, she cautiously locked the door via the keypad on the wall. Making her way up the corridor, she heard a beeping sound on her pad informing her that she can lock and unlock the door through her pad.

Cassia turned around and headed toward the turbolift ready to start her first day at work. Her heart was pounding in suspense, her stomach tingling with butterflies, her breathing deepened as she anticipated what awaited her at the med bay. Was it going to be a steady day? Busy? Or quiet? She could only imagine all three knowing her luck. Cassia pushed the square button and the doors 'whooshed' open, stepping inside she looked at the various buttons, each to a different floor upon the ship. The Bridge was at the top floor and the Engineering floor was at the very bottom. Cassia pressed Med-bay and the doors closed she felt the floor beneath rise as the lift rose, momentarily coming to a sudden halt as the doors opened showing Cassia her destination.

Cassia stepped out seeing crew member's waiting for her to move, she nodded her head at them and walked out into the corridor. They nodded back in turn as they walked into the large lift, she smiled slowly looking around unsure which way to go as she watched people walking past. Some of them were rushing, others steadily pacing alone or in groups chatting about things Cassia was unable to hear. Unsure of where to go, she opened her mouth to ask for directions. But before she could utter the words, she stopped herself. She was hesitant to ask for fear of how they would react to her question. Would they laugh at her? Or help? Her eyes darted around as she watched the commuters, she assumed the corridor would lead her there eventually, where else would the deck go?
After a moment, she decided to just trust her gut instinct and walk along with them.

Cassia made her way to the Med-bay. As she walked at a steady pace watching the different crew members walk past, her eyes widened as she noticed somebody ahead of her going in the same direction. She spoke softly the name that came to mind, unsure if it was the person that she thought it was. Speeding to get closer to the person in question, swiftly moving past the people, she gasped aloud and shouted at the person.

"LILLY!"

The young lady froze, she slowly turned around at her name being called, wondering who yelled it. Frowning in annoyance, as she shuffled around to look past people as they walked on. She didn't know if it was a prank, or if she was hearing things? Tutting in frustration she went to turn around. Suddenly she stopped, her eyes met with Cassia waving a her. Drawing closer, her blue eye widened with joy. They hadn't seen one another in her in ages. Gasping in disbelief, Cassia stopped in front of her with her arms wide open. Cassia's heart pounced with joy it was her, held her pad in her left hand and opened her arms for an embrace.

Lilly's heart pounded wildly against her chest in both excitement and fear. She was excited to see her friend after so long, however, she had unresolved issues about women touching her following the death of her parents. She did not like to be touched, strangely this was especially the case with females. Despite knowing Cassia for years, it even happened with her, her best friend. Whenever it happened, it sent her body through a state of panic she could not control. Although she had learned to endure it over the years, she still could not do it for long.

Cassia wrapped her arms around her in joy, moving side to side warmth filling her as she squeezed her tightly. Cassia tried to hold back her warm tears of glee. Lilly's whole body stiffened up her body filling with dread as the embrace continued. Her heart pounded quickly as terror ran though her veins her breath hitched. An irrational smothering sensation overcame her, she could not take it any longer. Lilly gently pushed her away after a few seconds. Cassia frowned slightly at the action confused and slightly hurt from the rejection.

She had always done this to her since the beginning of their friendship, but Cassia couldn't understand why. Lilly had warned her she wasn't a "huggy person", but Cassia always sensed there was more to it. Cassia decided not to question it, not wanting to pry into her friend's mind and personal life. But she always wanted to know why she was like this to see if she could help her and why she acted the way she did.

Lilly could see the hurt in her face from her actions, but she could not understand what she was going through. Her body started to calm down, her skin no longer felt like it was on fire her heart and breathing had cooled down to a normal rhythm once again. She tried to change the awkward situation by talking to her hoping it would cheer her up.
"I cannot believe it's you! It's been so long!"
Cassia nodded her head as she looked at Lilly. She still looked the same, apart from her hair. She had long blonde hair, although now she had a few pastel coloured streaks in it. She still had the aviator goggles upon her head, like always, with her tattoo chokers that had a sliver Pentagram Cross on it today. She hesitantly smiled as she answered back,
"Yeah it has, how are you?"
Lilly shrugged her shoulders as she spoke at her. In a further attempt to break the ice, Cassia asked;
"So, what's new? You seeing anybody yet?"
Lilly rolled her eyes and lethargically answered,
"No, still just me and my Destiny."
Cassia's eyes widened with excitement;
"Destiny's here?!"
Lilly promptly shushed Cassia to stop her from drawing unwanted attention.

Destiny was Lilly's cat, who she had illegally smuggled on the Enterprise. She was a black cat with a crescent moon collar, she was a house cat so keeping her in Lily's room and feeding her leftovers from meal times wasn't an issue.
Lilly swiftly proceeded to answer her original question as to how she was,
"Same as always still working, studying and singing with the band. Yourself?"
Cassia smiled as she spoke back.
"Still trying to get it in my head I'm actually in space, but apart from that, everything's fine. So, who's taking over 'DeForrest' now that you are here?"
'DeForrest' was Lilly's band.
Lilly smiled at her with her hand on her hips,
"Noah, the guitarist. Only whilst I'm here though. I'm sure they will be fine, he's a great singer."

Cassia nodded in agreement, having seen Lily and her band play a live gig once, she could not believe what an amazing singer Lilly was. She wished she could sing as beautifully as her. The way she held her notes and stayed perfectly in tune during her songs; gave her tingles all over. Her band mostly did cover songs, but with a few of their own. There was four band members. Lilly was the lead singer; Noah was the guitarist and back up lead singer when Lilly was absent. Amelia was drummer, Mason was on keyboards and backing singer and finally, Jerry was on bass guitar and backing singer. Cassia did not know much else about them, but she knew Lilly was great friends with them all. They were like a second family to her.

Cassia smirked, jokingly asked

"So, how's it going with pointy ears? are you guys mphm-"

But quickly got cut off as Lilly put her left hand over her mouth, stopping her going any further on with it. She saw the panic in her eyes, no one knew about Lilly's huge crush on Spock and she did not want anyone to find out even the Vulcan himself.

"Shhh! No, I have not and probably never will"

As she looked away from her, lowering her hand from Cassia's mouth. She felt her heart drop at the sadness in her friend's face, she sensed great pain in her eyes. Lilly was falling for him, but knew it could never be as he was with Uhura. She was trying to move on and forget him. She was trying desperately to make her heart and mind be clear of him, to fall for some else and be happy but, alas could not. Cassia put down her pad gently placed her hands on the tops of her arms, trying to comfort her as she moved them downwards in a soothing manner.

"Lilly I'm sorry! I shouldn't have joked about it, I'm so sorry. I promise I won't do it again. Let's just totally forget about him. What about that other guy?"

Lilly jolted at the action her body flaring up. In a spike of fear from Cassia's touch as it lingered. She stepped back, pushing her off her. Cassia gasped at Lilly's reaction, moving backwards from the harsh shove but kept her footing. She looked at Lilly as she stood there panting heavily hugging herself.

"Lilly...?"

She looked up at her through her long fringe, sweat falling from her face as she swallowed hard. Her heart and breathing increased in fright as pins and needles enveloped her skin. Nodding her head steadily, she slowly calmed herself internally. She repeated in her mind,

'It's fine... no bodies going to hurt you she did not mean it. Calm yourself down Lilly...'

After a few deep breaths in and out, she straightened her posture, replying in a low croaky voice.

"I'm fine..."

Cassia had never seen her like that before. It was a first for her, she never knew it got so bad for her. She was going to have to be more careful around her from now on and try to lessen contact with her. Maybe even to a full halt if it came to it to avoid another situation like that. She did not want to see her like that ever again.

Lilly had tried to forget about Spock him right now, she just wanted to focus on her work. Lilly looked back and faintly smiled at her as she spoke out to in a weak voice.

"Maybe, but right now I'm just focusing on studies"

Cassia nodded as she replied,

"Oh! Still trying become Chief or doctor? That must be a lot of studying?"

Lilly just smiled and agreed, trying to get the conversation off her. She felt uneasy being the focus of the conversation. She hated being the centre of attention and much preferred to get to know people.

"Yeah. Anyways where are you heading off too?"

Cassia eyes widened with the realization she was going to be late for her first shift,

"Oh, shit yeah! I'm heading to med-bay, it's my first day and I got a bit lost."

Lilly smiled sweetly at her cursing and shook her head as she moved her arms pointing in the direction of the area.

"Oh well, I'm just heading there myself we can go together."

Cassia agreed and picked up her pad. With that they both walked off together and made their way to the large surgery. When they reached the med bay, it was characterized by a blue and orange colour scheme and featured a lab area and numerous biobeds. The biobeds were situated along the back wall, each with grey curtains, there was enough to accommodate more than a dozen patients. The med bay was accessible from both a standard corridor and a direct turbolift. Personnel would report to the med bay for surgery, check-ups and health exanimations were performed.
McCoy had his own office in the back which contained a number of medical tools along the side walls. As they both walked inside it was quiet, McCoy was in his office. Cassia looked at Lilly,

"So, what am I doing today?"

Lilly looked at her and smiled.

"You can hang out with me and help me with my patients today."

Cassia smiled with excitement as Lilly picked up her Pad and checked through her list of appointments for the day. Clicking on the first one as she looked at the people sitting in the corner waiting. She walked over and called out the first name. The first patient stood up and the three walked over to the first available bio bed.
