Chapter 14 – Frozen

Misting vapour tickled senses in hints of chamomile. However, her vast selection of calming teas was not enough to combat the rushing caffeine. Setting down the half-empty cup, Kagome reached for her running shoes; the worn rubber soles a testament to her fight against a sedentary lifestyle. Trail running had become a pastime; fresh air away from the coagulating city became her drug.

A quick jog should tire her out, she surmised. All attempts at sleep failed significantly, and melatonin pills were no help.

Breathing deeply, she lightly stretched, focusing on finely-toned calves and quads. Content with her warm-up, delicate hands reached for a hoodie before making her way out the building.

Jogging time was also used for reflecting back on the week. Personal reflection was important to gauge progress, and it was something she would always remember to do. She cycled through her mental checklist while making her way towards the nearby park.

Work: finally finished those stupid reports. She grimaced.

Bills: prepaid for next month's rent, done! After accidentally missing a bill, forgetting about it, and almost getting evicted – she was sure to not let that happen again.

Errands: buy new bus pass next week, and return an umbrella... She continued jogging in place while waiting for the lights to turn green.

Contemplation of a stolen umbrella brought forth memories of the item's owner.

Hair like liquid silver…

Eyes like molten gold…

Magenta stripes…

and –

Beeping of the crosswalk pulled away lingering thoughts. Refocusing on her singular path, she started to cross. Being this late at night, she did not heed to look both ways…

And it was too late to register the sudden screech of tires.

It was too late to register her shock at the blinding headlights coming her way.

It was too late to move.
