After that first night Adrien had attacked things only got worse for him. Lila continued to use her witchcraft to manipulate his thirst for human blood but he fought that urge. He fought it will all his might, sometimes when it would get too out of control Nino would offer him some of is own blood to drink but it wasn't enough. The addiction he felt drove him insane and he hated it. It made him feel great shame, disgust, and hatred toward himself. It made him see himself more and more like a monster. Nino became very worried for him but no one worried for him more than Marinette. The addiction and his negative emotions had caused him to start acting so strangely. Whenever she saw him he always looked so dazed, confused, and sickly. Like he was going mad and not only that but he kept avoiding her every chance he could. She tried so hard to talk to him but he would just make up some excuse and hurry himself off. She started to question Nino about what was going on with him but he just told her that it was nothing she needed to worry about and dismissed her.
Then one night she awoke to hear a disturbing noise which was coming from downstairs. She got out of bed, slipped on her robe, and hurried downstairs but she wasn't the only one who's rest had been interrupted by the noise. Alya and Nino had also gone downstairs to investigate the disturbance. They found Adrien screeching and hollowing like a wild beast while smashing vases of flowers, destroying furniture, and breaking windows.
"Adrien what are you doing?!" Alya asked.
He didn't respond, it was as if he didn't know any of them were even there. Unknown to them, his addiction for human blood and his will that fought it had both gotten so far out of hand that it had caused him to break down and suffer an episode. Nino had seen Adrien go crazy from his addiction but not like this. Lila must have used an especially strong spell on him.
"Adrien please, calm yourself!"
Nino rushed to stop him but Adrien just grabbed him and threw him against the nearest wall. Horrified Alya quickly went to his side.
"Are you okay?" Alya asked him.
"I'm good." He answered her.
Marinette shuddered with both fear and confusion. She had never seen him act violent or get angry. It was like he was a completely different person, his face was filled with a great rage and insanity but his eyes. His green eyes had become foggy and there were tears in them. He was crying but why?
Why was he doing in this? And if this was because he angry then why did he had tears in his eyes?
"My God he's insane! I'm calling the police!" Alya cried.
"Wait!" Marinette protested. "Let me try something."
She started to approach him.
"Marinette get away from him! He'll hurt you!" Nino warned.
But Marinette didn't listen, instead she continued to slowly approach Adrien. She gently tapped his shoulder with hr finger causing him to turn and face her. He terrified her, he terrified her greatly but she wouldn't back down.
"Adrien." She said calmly. "I need you to stop."
He snarled at her which made her tremble a little but she quickly regain her courage.
"Adrien stop this." Her voice commanded in a tone that was soft but firm. "You're scaring everyone, including me so stop it."
He seized her roughly by the wrist looking as if he was ready to throw her to the ground and tears her apart with his bear hands but when she gently brushed the fingers of her free hand against his cheek his face started to soften while more tears spilled from his guilt ridden green eyes. He fell to his knees, she grabbed a handkerchief from a drawer and went down on her knees with him. Using her handkerchief she wiped his tears away and put her arms around him.
"It's alright." She kept telling him gently. "Everything's going to be alright."
Eventually he wore himself out and fell asleep. Marinette didn't want to leave him like this so she slept by his side for the whole night but not before asking Alya and Nino to cover all the windows to keep the morning sunlight from burning Adrien's skin. The next morning it was Adrien who woke up first but he had no memory of what happened the night before. He was lying in the middle of the floor, his head hurt, and he was very disoriented. As he started to see things more clearly he found Marinette's sleeping face resting in his lap while her hand held his.
She was so lovely and she smelled so sweet. If it was under different circumstances he would have embraced her in his arms and kissed her rosy cheeks but upon seeing that horrible mess he had made in the room he was instantly brought back to his senses..
"Marinette." He called softly. "Marinette wake up."
Her eyes opened and let out a soft yawn as she became more awake.
"Are you feeling better?" She asked him.
"What happened?" He said.
"You don't remember?"
"No."
"Adrien you...You weren't yourself. You were screaming and breaking things, you attacked Nino, Alya almost called the police."
"Oh no." He said realizing what he had done.
"What's wrong with you? You've changed and last night you frightened me."
"Forgive me. I didn't mean to."
"Please tell me what's wrong with you? Why are you acting so differently? Why are you avoiding me?"
"You wouldn't understand."
"Then make me understand. Tell me what's happening to you and maybe I can help you."
"Why do you want to help me?"
"Because I care about you and I think I might even-"
"Don't say it!" He snapped causing her to move away from him. "I know what you're thinking but you're wrong. You misunderstand, you don't really feel that way about me."
"Right now I'm not sure what I feel for you but I know one thing for sure, I'm so scared for you Adrien."
"There's nothing to be scared of."
"Then why won't you tell me what's wrong with you?"
"Believe me Marinette it's better that you don't know the truth."
Marinette sighed in frustration. All these secrets he was keeping only made her more scared for him.
"Here let me help you get back to your room." He offered.
"No thank you." She said standing up. "I can get back to my room on my own."
"Alright then."
"You know..." She said trailing off. "You were crying too."
"Huh?"
"You had tears in your eyes. Your face was filled with so much anger and yet your eyes were filled with so much sadness. If you can't tell me what makes you angry then could you at least tell me what makes you sad?"
He looked away from her and became silent for what seemed like forever.
"I'm sad because...Because I...I feel so alone." He said refusing to look at her. "A long time ago I was so happy. I had everything but then one day my whole world fell apart and everything I ever loved was taken away from me. I was left alone in the dark."
"You don't have to be alone anymore." She told him while gently grasping his hand. "I'll be here for you if you ever need me."
"You're so kind to me Marinette. Why? Why do you treat me so kindly?"
"Because for some reason I feel like I know you. That I know who you are. You're a kind and gentle man but sad. I know that you're hurting and I want to make that hurt go away."
She walked up to his back and put her arms around him, embracing him. Her warmth and comfort always made him feel so much better. It made him feel like who he was many years ago. The happy, carefree young man who he used to be. But in his undead heart he knew all too well that he could never be that man again and no amount of compassion would ever change that.
"Marinette." He said.
"Yes?"
"I have somethings that I need to do today. Could you please go?"
"Alright."
She released her hold on him and went back upstairs to her bedroom. Adrien hated pushing Marinette away and he hated keeping secrets from her but it was for her own good. The less she knew about him the better. He couldn't risk her suffering the same date as Isabel. It was bad enough that he would forever be held responsible for Isabel's death but he would not be responsible for Marinette's.
