Thinning Life
The life just fell
off his bones.
First it was the little bits
of baby fat,
then the tucked in tummy,
the flattened butt,
then the way the scales
flicked back and fro
as though wondering
where that extra bit had gone
Then it was the webbed hands,
the hollowed cheeks, the spaces
between the ribs
And then the skin started flaking off
like he was already cremated
and coated with ash
while the machines looked
at closed eyes
and told their lies.
