Chapter 17: Dangerous fiends

The well known blue car of the elder Salvatore pulled up to the rundown hospital that looked as though it should have been shut down long ago. The only vampire inside the vehicle sighed, his ice blue eyes observing their surroundings as he shut off the car engine. "This is the last place in this area Bonnie could narrow it down to. If this Elle isn't here, well, who knows where she is."

Alaric glanced at his former yet not so former friend. "You do realise there could be a lethal hybrid in there, right? He wouldn't leave her unguarded and I quite like living, ironically enough. I still say our best shot at taking down Klaus is Mikael." He attempted and the vampire frowned. "Yeah, who chomped down on Katherine and then vanished before he tracked Stefan and I down and almost killed me!" He exclaimed.

The history teacher sighed before unbuckling his seatbelt. "Fine, lets do this then, but remember that there is innocents in there, Damon. I doubt this hybrid, if there is one in there, will spare them to protect her. He'll create a bloodbath."

Damon smirked. "And that's what I'm counting on."

Everything was still fuzzy, including her memories. Elle opened her eyes once more, thankful the blurriness blocked out the frightening aspects of the strange room she was still in. Unfortunately, it wasn't as fortunate to hide the man who sat beside her in a chair looking at a black block which was light on the front. She recognised him as Tony in an instant, his name coming to the front of her mind as he noticed she was somewhat conscious again. "Awake so soon? Guess I'll have to fetch that nurse." He drawled lazily.

Her brows furrowed as she tried to regain some awareness of her surroundings. Blue eyes landed on the unfamiliar object in his hand and she frowned a little more, the action causing pain to shoot through her head in which she winced in response. He glanced down at her once more. "What is that thing in your hand?" She inquired.

The question made him smirk and yet gape at her in the same expression. "My phone?" He asked back and she raised a finger to weakly gesture to what he seemed to be talking about. "Whatever that thing is. I have no idea," she laughed weakly, it soon dissolving into a hacking cough. "I was apparently dead for five centuries."

He made a sound in the back of his throat. "Well, in the simplest terms, you use it to communicate with others over extremely long distances. You merely press in some numbers, hit dial and then they answer and you talk with them. Its how I'm going to keep in touch with Klaus about how you're behaving or if you aren't, such as I know you happen to be stalling me so I don't fetch that nurse as soon as I should. Time to talk is over." He stated, her eyes going a little narrow despite their fuzziness of sight. How had he known she was stalling?"

"Please," she whispered, eyes watering. He paused to look down at her from where he stood in the doorway. Elle swallowed thickly, her throat aching from the lack of moisture there. "I have lived in darkness for centuries. I do not wish to sleep in it for another moment." She pleaded hoarsely and horror washed over her at the sadistic smirk that crept up his features. "And I have orders, and my orders are that you aren't to remain conscious unless Klaus says so, and right now, he doesn't want you being a problem. In fact, didn't he not tell you to gather your strength? I would do what he says, of course."

He walked from the room with a drawling chuckle, leaving her petrified and frozen at the prospect of being in that cold darkness once again, all alone too.

After an hour of searching, and having gone through sixteen of the seventeen wards that were in the small hospital. No one matching their description was in any of those wards, or anyone by the name of Elle, or even Ellevira had been checked into them. With a frustrated sigh, Damon walked into the last remaining ward, Alaric following close behind. He knocked shoulders with someone accidentally, that someone giving a smirk before they vanished.

It wasn't the easiest task to go in and compel an entire ward to find them one girl. He walked up to a nurse who was at the reception desk, plastering on his most charming grin as he did. "Hi there." He said and the nurse gave him a smile back. "Can I help you with something?" She asked back and he gave her a wider grin. "Perhaps you can," he peered at her badge. "Jackie, right?"

She nodded simply, placing her clipboard down on the counter. "Tell what the problem is then and I'll see if I can be of any assistance." She replied and he nodded, glancing back at Alaric who was looking around, seeing if he could notice anything out of the normal for a high state of care ward.

"We're looking for a woman. Small, dark hair, skin as white as a ghost. She looks in her late teens, and her name is Elle." He asked and the nurse smiled as though she were in a trance. "I am sorry but there isn't anyone here by that name. Have a good day." She nodded once before walking away, leaving her clipboard behind.

Damon frowned before motioning for his friend to come over. "That was definite compelled behaviour. All the others searched the database for their ward and this one didn't." He muttered before noticing the clipboard that had been left behind. He snatched it up in an instant, looking down the names on the list. "Johnson, Adams, Harris," he read before coming to a name at the bottom of the list, or the third bottom. "Jane doe?" He questioned.

Alaric took the list from him. "Jane Doe?" He echoed and he hummed under his breath. "We could check it out, but there's a good chance there could be a hybrid there, and I doubt Klaus will give you his blood once he finds out what we've done."

What a lucky chance that had been. And how rude; that vampire dick hadn't even apologised. He walked back into the hospital room that contained a quite unconscious Elle, who he spared a glace at, and then pulled out his phone in an instant after he looked from her, dialling the one and only number he had. Unsurprisingly, it answered on the first ring. "Tony. Everything going well in The Volunteer state? I trust Elle is behaving herself."

With another glance at the unconscious human, he answered. "Someone is here, looking for her. What do you want me to do?" He spoke in a low voice, closing the door, locking it and shutting the blinds and then curtains soon after. Better for them not to even catch a glimpse of her, lest it be his head on a silver platter.

There was a brief pause as the original hybrid thought things over. "I received a call from Stefan Salvatore late last night. Father dearest appears to have a rather unfortunate run in with a dagger. If you get her to Chicago, I'll swing by and pick you both up. Make sure to keep her sedated. I don't have time for her tantrums." He clipped before hanging up, leaving the hybrid alone with the unconscious human once again.

He unclipped her IV, opting to leave the actual tube still in her arm, just not attached to anything. He swung his arms under her legs, pulling her out of the bed and holding her like one would an infant, the compassion making him smirk ironically. He started towards the door, instead pausing as footsteps sounded outside of it, and he froze, listening in on the conversation that was taking place outside.

As he paused, as did those outside, and then the door burst open, and before he could react and sink his venomous teeth into the intruder, his neck broke.
