You Need To Trust Me
Chapter 15 "Dreams"

Delilah POV
"Ew! Get that away from me!" I looked up as I heard Alice's squeal. Jake was holding a hunk of dried manure—and teasing Alice with it.
I laughed as I watched him chase her around—at regular speed since we weren't alone—and glanced at over Nessie, who rolled her eyes.
"I can't take him anywhere." She pretended to complain as she sat her pitchfork against the wall and went to save her aunt. I could see Jasper give Champ a pat on the shoulder as he put him into his stall.
Emmett was out with Kyle and Edward checking on the herd. Esme, Kathryn and Cody were in Kathryn's office discussing the finances.
Bella was down two stalls and Carlisle was at the feed store grabbing more supplies. Thinking of it all of it made me feel a bit weepy.
I had such wonderful friends, such a wonderful family who wasn't my family, to be here, to help like this with no complaints, to pitch in when someone needed it. They were the best.
"You okay?" Jasper stopped by where I was. He could probably feel it all. I smiled and nodded.
"I'm okay." I answered him and then I hugged him. He didn't stiffen like he used to—something I learned was because of his struggle with his thirst—and he squeezed me. "I was just thinking how lucky I am to have all of you in my life."
"We're damn lucky too." Jasper smiled. "Now what's next, boss?"
Laughing, I gestured to the full wheelbarrow. "Be so nice as to take that out to the muck pile?"
Jasper chuckled. "You got it Ma'am."
I watched him wheel it towards the muck pile and then turned when I heard footsteps. It was Kathryn. She looked a little tired and worn out. She was still recovering from her surgery. Her surgeon was optimistic that she had removed almost all of the cancerous tissue and Kathryn started chemo next week.
I put my hands on my hips. "Aren't you supposed to be resting young lady?"
Kathryn smiled and shook her head. "I am, I am. I finished up with Esme and Cody, everything looks good so I was just going up to the house. I just wanted to check on you."
I reached out and she took my hand. "I should be asking you that."
Kathryn shrugged. "I'm fine besides my incision site hurts. And that's why I'm going inside, Doctor." She added quickly before I could get on her. Kyle, Carlisle and I usually ganged up on her to try to keep her resting. It was hard for her to stay still I knew.
"Okay…Do you want me to walk you up?" I took her arm in mine, not giving her a choice. "I was thinking that tonight you could help me with some of my applications for a bit to get them out of the way, then you and I could watch our favorite movie."
Kathryn squeezed my arm. "And eat popcorn?"
"Uh duh." I said as we walked along. "With extra butter."
"And lots of salt." Kathryn grinned.
"Just the way Kyle insists we don't eat it." I grinned back at her.
"What he doesn't know won't hurt him." She shrugged and I was glad that things were still this way between us.
"Can I ask you something?" I opened the door for Kathryn to walk through and she nodded.
"What were you and Kyle talking about last night?" I had heard them having a discussion in their bedroom and it had sounded heavy. I figured it was cancer related.
Kathryn stilled for a moment before sighing. She sat down on the bench and started to take her boots off. "The doctor suggested that we might want to consider freezing some of my eggs before the chemo. That's what we were talking about."
I had not been expecting that. "Oh."
Kathryn leaned back against the wall. "Kyle wants to. I'm not worried about it, plus it's expensive."
I was—technically—their only kid. I had always thought they'd have some of their own. "Don't you want children?"
Kathryn smiled softly and reached out to hold my face in her hands. "We already have a beautiful daughter." I covered her hands with mine before she pulled back. "Besides, if we can't have children naturally after this, we'll adopt. That's how we got you."
"Well yeah but I was kind of…pushed on you guys. You didn't choose me." I said, looking down.
Kathryn pulled my face up to make me look at her. "Delilah, we did choose you. We choose you every day and will for the rest of our lives. We didn't have to take you in. We wanted to. Just like we wanted to make it official and adopt you. You are the best thing to ever happen to us and we're so glad you're a part of our family."
"I love you guys." I said feeling myself choke up a bit. Kathryn looked teary herself.
"And we love you. So you just cut out this 'pushed on us' crap. We chose you. And maybe one day you'll get a sibling and will have to share the spotlight a little."
I scoffed, my hand on my chest. "The spotlight? I have no spotlight."
Kathryn's eyebrows raised up. "Who gets the attention in this family? Whose future have we been discussing for the past few months?"
I rolled my eyes. "Well at least I had the attention until you had to go and get cancer."
It was silent for a moment before Kathryn burst into laughter. "Oh my god, you did not just say that!"
I let out a little laugh. "I think I did. Oh God. I'm a terrible person." I covered my face.
Kathryn continued to laugh. "No, no, I love it. We can joke about all things in this house. Laughter gets us through the bad things."
"It really does." I said with a nod. "They say humor is the best medicine."
"And it's the truth." We both turned at the sound of Carlisle's voice. He stood there with Kyle and they were both smiling.
"Doctor approved." Kathryn gestured towards him and I rolled my eyes, shaking my head.
"You hungry Babe?" I heard Kyle ask as him and Kathryn walked into the kitchen. I stood up, thinking I'd go back outside.
Carlisle stopped me with a hand on my arm. "How are you holding up, Delilah?"
I patted his hand. "I'm good, Carlisle. Thanks for asking." I started to leave but I turned to him. "And thanks for always drugging me when I need it."
Carlisle chuckled as I grinned at him. "Anytime, Delilah."
As I walked back to the barn, Nessie met me halfway with Alice and Bella. "So we were thinking…" Nessie started and I raised my eyebrows.
"Never good when you and Alice start thinking together." I said teasingly and Bella nodded in agreement.
Alice huffed. "We have great ideas." Then she tapped her head. "I've already seen you'll love it."
I laughed. "What's your idea?"
"We were thinking we'd all go for a ride together. The four of us." Nessie smiled at me and I couldn't help but smile at their idea.
"I love it!" I exclaimed excitedly. I turned to Alice. "You'll really get on a horse for me?"
She crossed her arms. "For you, I will. Even though you were just really mean to me!"
"Aww, you know I love you Alice!" I squeezed the little pixie. "Let's go pick you out a horse!"
…
Emmett POV
Edward, Jasper, Jake, and I watched as the girls rode off together, side by side. "Man, I thought Alice would never agree to do that." Jasper said in amazement as he watched his wife riding away.
"Me either." I admitted, leaning back against the barn door. "But she really cares for Delilah. So she'll do it."
Jake nodded. "They all do. The ride with her friends will do Delilah a world of good and give us time to get your stuff ready."
I felt a twinge of nervousness at what we were going to do. "You know the last time I sprung something on Delilah, it wasn't the greatest thing in the world."
Edward rolled his eyes. "Emmett, you both have cleared the major hurdles. She's accepted that you love her and she loves you now. She'll like it."
"Girls love anniversaries." Jasper said in agreement. Delilah and I's real anniversary had been weeks ago, around the beginning of October—when we went on our first real date—but too much had been going on. Now with Kathryn's surgery out of the way and before her first chemo, I had the time to do something for Delilah.
I nodded. They were right. She'd be happy to celebrate it.
So we left for our house and for the next hour, we turned Esme's workshop into a twinkly light and candle explosion. A romantic piece of paradise. Edward set up the speakers with Jacob—and picked the music over my objections.
Jasper and I moved the table in before I went to the house and followed Esme's recipe to a T.
As I stuck the dish in the oven, I thought about the past year. Delilah hadn't been in my life until a little over a year ago and it was hard to believe. She fit so well into my life and with my family, and I with hers.
I couldn't help but think about Rosalie and our first anniversary. I had went all out—way bigger than this with Rose's taste—and she had been so happy. At that point, no one could really stand to be around us—with the lust and love and all our…feelings. It had me thinking to when it was our fifth anniversary.
It's when she had surprised me with the house in Tennessee. It had been an old rickety cabin then—we had fixed it up with Esme's help. Leave it to Rose to follow the 'tradition' of gifts—fifth year was wood. I had made her a vanity out of wood, so I guess I couldn't say much. It had been my favorite gift, as it gave me the gift to be close to my original home.
Thinking of Rosalie, I thought about the connection between her and Delilah. How Del was her Great Niece. I shook my head with a smile. Rose always got her way.
Edward poked his head into the kitchen. "Everything is good to go. We're heading out now. You need anything else?"
"No, I think I'm good." Looking at the clock, I blew out a breath. "Guess I better go get changed."
"Have fun tonight." Edward smiled before disappearing. I had to appreciate my family—and Del's—and their support of my ideas for Delilah. They were all having dinner at the ranch so I could surprise Delilah.
Suddenly I couldn't wait for her to get here.
…..
Delilah POV
"Alice! What are you doing?" I demanded as the small pixie-like girl shoved me into my room after forcing me in the shower and pulling me out. My hair towel slipped off, dropping my wet blonde hair all over my shoulders.
"Just sit down." She said pushing me into a chair by my desk that held a huge box. It wasn't mine and I wondered where it came from. Alice went to it and opened it up. A mirror became visible and I saw makeup, hair accessories and I met Alice's eyes.
"What are you doing?" I repeated before looking at Nessie.
Nessie smiled. "Just trust her." So I did. I dried off as requested and then in my bra and panties, sat down in front of the mirror as Alice transformed me. I felt a little bit like one of those Barbie heads that little girls get to practice on as Alice did my makeup and then braided two small braids on both sides of my head before pinning them behind my head.
I couldn't complain though—and not just because Alice would kill me—but because she made me look, well, amazing. She pulled me into a standing position and Nessie was there with a lilac colored dress. Alice nodded and Nessie helped me into it.
It was flowy and came down to my knees. It was a light fabric and the sleeves came to my elbows. Bella helped me into a small pair of heels and met my eyes. "I talked Alice down from super big heels. Thank me."
"Thank you." I whispered as Alice glared at us both. Bella and Nessie just grinned.
Alice turned me towards the body length mirror on my closet door and I gasped a little. While I wasn't crazy about getting dressed up and didn't typically wear makeup, I really liked what I saw in the mirror. My braids were pinned in the back, but they were small, leaving the rest of my curls down. The eyeshadow was a light white to match the light color of the dress and the shoes helped accent my legs.
"Thank you guys." I said as I slid my hands down the dress. I looked up to meet their eyes in the mirror. "But you still haven't told me what this is for…"
"It's here!" Alice said excitedly and she pulled me out of the room.
"What is here, Alice?" I asked as she helped me down the stairs. All eyes were on us and I noticed that Emmett was missing. "Where's Emmett?"
"He's waiting for you." Kathryn said from her seat at the counter and I could see she was excited. "Let us get a picture of you! Kyle, get the camera!"
"I've got it, Hon." He said as he gave me a look that said I better go along with whatever Kathryn wanted—not that I would object to anything she wanted.
Alice posed me in front of the crackling fireplace—she literally posed me the way she wanted me. I smiled for the cameras, as I didn't want Alice to hurt me. Then was being pulled out the door by her and Nessie.
Outside, there was a black limousine waiting, with Emmett standing there in gray dress slacks and a shirt to match my dress. A look of pure—to be honest—desire crossed Emmett's face and he lit up with a smile.
"You look beautiful." He murmured as he gently grabbed me from Alice and Nessie. Emmett pulled me to him and kissed me and I forgot about everyone else, deepening the kiss.
"Ahem." Someone cleared their throat behind us and we pulled apart to see Kyle standing there with the camera. "I'm supposed to get your picture together—preferably without your lips locked."
Emmett and I grinned but obliged Kyle his picture before getting into the limousine. "What is this?" I asked Emmett as we left the ranch.
"Happy first anniversary—a little belated of course." Emmett said, kissing my hand. My heart swelled at his sweetness.
"I thought we weren't gonna celebrate." I commented, scooting closer to him.
Emmett laid his head on top on mine. "We couldn't not celebrate the best thing that's happened to both of us."
"You mean to you?" I teased him and he laughed. "I mean because I'm pretty great."
"You're the best thing in my world." He whispered against my cheek.
"So are you." I kissed him. The car stopped and Emmett opened the door for me.
"Right this way, beautiful." Emmett led me to the backyard and I realized we were at the Cullen's house. The pathway to Esme's workshop was lined by white, twinkling lights and I could see more inside the workshop.
I felt like I had stepped into some romantic movie when we got to the workshop—there were white lights hanging, candles all along the walls of the shop. A table sat in the center draped in a white tablecloth with two candles and delicious looking food on it.
"Emmett." I whispered, overcome by emotions as I looked around. Emmett kissed my cheek.
"I wanted it to be memorable." He said, sliding his hands up and down my arms.
"It is."
He pulled me along to the table and somewhere music started playing. As I sat down, I looked at the food and smiled over at Emmett, who sat across from me. "Chicken Alfredo?"
"We had it on our first date." He smiled back and I remembered. We did, there in the meadow near the ranch.
We ate and talked (well I did), keeping the topics to light topics, not wanting to talk about deep or sad things as we enjoyed our time together.
After we finished eating, Emmett pulled me to an empty space in the workshop, into his arms, and the music changed. I recognized the voice of Christina Perri and realized the name of the song. "I love this song." I said as 'A Thousand Years' played and we swayed to the song.
"It makes me think of you." He said kissing my forehead. I laid my head on his shoulder.
"You know, it was actually one of her songs that made me come find you, to tell you I loved you." I confessed to him, thinking of it with a smile.
"Oh yeah? Do tell." He rubbed my back gently.
"Yeah, it was playing on the radio in the barn. It's called 'The Words' and I just thought, that even though you had been hurt, you still put yourself out there, let yourself fall in love with me. And that maybe I'd just let my heart guide me."
Emmett had stopped swaying. "Em?" I looked up at his face and he looked a bit stunned—but amazed at the same time. "What is it?"
"I had requested that song on the radio that night—the night you came to tell me you loved me. They had asked me if I wanted to dedicate to anyone—and I said you. I…well…the song made me think of us too, how we've both been hurt and needed to open up."
I smiled even more and my heart squeezed at the thought. "Well I guess it wasn't my heart doing the guiding, but you. You brought me back to you."
"I thank everything there is every day that you came to me." He whispered, leaning down to kiss me. I met him halfway and he pulled me tightly against him.
He deepened the kiss and I fell into it. The next thing I knew, I was up against the wall with my legs wrapped around Emmett. "Emmett."
He pushed up against me, making me groan. "Oh, God."
I gripped his hair with my hands and kissed every part of him that I could reach. He lifted my dress up my hips and ripped my panties off, leaving me free, for him.
He kissed my neck all the way down to my collarbone, leaving a trail of heat behind him. I leaned my head back, my breath coming quickly.
When he pulled back, our eyes met. "You better have a condom this time."
So quickly I barely saw it, he pulled a condom out of his pocket. "We're covered."
I grabbed it from him, ripping the foil before he took it back from me. I could hear him rolling it onto himself and then I forget everything but him as he pushed inside me.
"Delilah." He whispered my name over and over again as we moved frantically together.
"Oh Emmett." I put my face into his shoulder, letting myself be lost in him.
….
I laid there in a kind of happy bliss with Emmett laying on me. "God, I've missed this."
"Mmm." was Emmett's only response and I smiled. He pushed himself up and his eyes were still a bit glazed. He rolled over to lay beside me—on the floor of Esme's shop—and I heard him mumble something.
"What is it?" I asked, turning to face him. I could see him holding something in his hand, with a touch of panic on his face.
I realized what it was. "Crap. Did it break?"
"I don't know." Emmett said, panic coloring his voice. "Oh God."
I stared at the condom he held in his hands. After a moment, Emmett squeezed it but nothing came out. We both sighed in relief. "Still intact."
Emmett laid back on the ground and threw his arm over his eyes. "Jesus, I guess we need to be a little less…frantic."
I let out a small giggle and leaned against his chest. "We were a little crazy."
He pulled his arm back to look at me. "Yeah, we definitely were." Emmett pushed one of my falling braids back out of my face. "You make me crazy."
"I could say the same to you." I placed a kiss on his bare chest and his eyes darkened. "We can't."
"Can't we?" He murmured as he pulled me on top of him.
A little while later, we sat in Emmett's Jeep on the way back to the ranch. "I look okay right?"
Emmett glanced over at me. "You mean do you look like you just were rolling around on the floor with me?
I hit his arm. "Seriously. I know Kyle and Kathryn probably think we're having sex, but if I come home looking like we were rolling around together, we'll never get alone time."
Emmett chuckled. "You look fine. We mostly fixed your hair."
I sighed in relief. "Thank you."
Emmett pulled up by the barn once we were at the ranch and we checked the horses together. After leaving the barn, we walked to the house.
Goodbyes were said by everyone and Emmett kissed me before he left. Kathryn had asked me for every detail before letting me go up to my room and change for bed.
By the time I made it up to my room, Emmett had texted me. Miss you already.
I smiled at his sweet text and sent him a message back. I miss you too, handsome. Thank you again for the beautiful date. I love you so much.
He replied immediately. Love you more.
Sometimes I felt like the luckiest girl in the world.
….
Delilah POV, Tuesday November 26th
"I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving." I said to Nessie as we walked out of school together. It was the last day of school before Thanksgiving Break and since most of the Cullens were hunting today, Nessie and I were going to hang out. We were talking about going out to eat since it was just us two.
"Time flies." Nessie said, opening my passenger door and climbing in my truck. I tossed my backpack in the middle on top of Nessie's and started the truck. "So where are we going?"
Nessie side-eyed me. "You really have to ask?"
I grinned over at her. "Burke's it is." Burke's was a local restaurant a town over that Nessie and I loved. It served American Classics but also served Mediterranean dishes, which is usually what Nessie and I got.
"So how many universities have you applied for now?" Nessie asked as we drove and I let out a huff.
"It feels like thousands. I just wanted to apply to a few but Emmett is all over me about applications." I rolled my eyes. "Did I tell you he made me apply to a college in Florida of all places? The freaking Sunshine State. I mean if I went there…"
Nessie glanced over at me when I stopped. "If you went there, what?"
I didn't want to tell her. I shrugged but I knew she wouldn't let it go. "Tell me, Delilah." She insisted.
I sighed. "If I went there, Emmett couldn't go with me." I hunched my shoulders, a little embarrassed that I was making college considerations based on where Emmett could go. I never thought I'd be one of those girls.
Nessie chuckled. "Delilah, Emmett would follow you wherever. It doesn't matter that he'd basically never be able to go outside during the day, if you wanted to go to Florida, he'd follow you."
I smiled a bit at her words. "Well I know that but it wouldn't be fair. If he…if he follows me off to college, I want it to be somewhere that we can go out together and each enjoy the place together." I thought again how Nessie was so lucky that Jacob was…well normal. That they both could be out in public together with no issues.
"What about you?" I asked her, shaking the envious thoughts away. I loved Emmett, no matter what.
Nessie listed off quite a few colleges, some of them impressive. San Diego, Phoenix, Oregon, Seattle, Dartmouth, Princeton. I wasn't surprised though. Nessie was super smart.
Sadness set in as I realized that Nessie and I could end up on opposite ends of the country.
"Are you okay?" Nessie's question pulled me out of my thoughts and I realized my expression must have given my thoughts away.
Pulling into Burke's parking lot, I shrugged before finding a parking spot. I shut the truck off and sat there, messing with the keys. "It's just...I just realized that we may end up really far away from each other." I said, tears brimming in my eyes. God, I hated this emotional stuff. It felt like I was more emotional than ever lately.
Nessie reached over to hug me tightly and I hugged her back. "No matter what, we're gonna stay best friends." She said intensely and squeezed me tighter. "I don't care if I'm in California and you're in Florida or if you're in Montana and I'm in Connecticut."
"You promise?" I whispered, tears falling down.
"I promise." She pulled back and offered her pinky finger. Laughing a little, we pinky swore to always be best friends. "Now let's go eat, pleaseeeeeee."
"Yes, let's go." I got out of the truck and walked towards the restaurant. Inside it was a little packed and the hostess, a girl named Grace who knew us by heart now, sat us in a back corner booth where it was a little quieter. "Thanks Grace."
"No problem, Delilah. Joanie will be right out to get your order." Grace said with a smile before leaving.
"So are we eating at your place for Thanksgiving?" Nessie asked as she looked over the menu. I thought it was amusing that she still looked at the menu though we both usually got the same thing whenever we came here.
"You really have to ask?" I said with a snort. "Only you and Jake eat. Carlisle is working too right?"
Nessie nodded. "Emmett still wants to come though."
"Even though he has to fake eat?" I smiled and Nessie chuckled.
"Even though…."
Joanie came, ending our conversation. "All right girls, what'll it be today?" We ordered our usual and Joanie smiled. "Coming right up.
Before I could say anything else, Grace popped up at our booth, sitting beside me. "Oh hey, Grace." She looked a little flushed and didn't meet my eyes. "Everything okay?"
"I hate to ask you this...but do either of you have a, well, tampon?" She asked quietly and I sympathized. It was always a little embarrassing to ask other people. I glanced at Nessie who shrugged and I knew, of course, she wouldn't have any. Because the whole half-vampire thing.
I reached over to grab my bag and rummaged through it. I wasn't on my period this week so I might possibly have maybe one but I wasn't sure. I finally found one. "Here you go." I slid it to her so no one could see.
"Thank you!" She ran off towards the bathrooms and I turned back to Nessie, who looked curious.
"What?" I asked, grabbing a piece of bread out of the basket Joanie had sat down.
"What's it like?" Nessie said. I realized she was asking about periods.
"Having a period?" I replied quietly and she nodded. I took a moment to think of how to phrase it. "Well, it's pretty awful. I mean blood coming out, cramps, mood swings. It's not fun."
"Does it bother Emmett?"
I blushed. "I don't think so. We never talk about it besides to say nothing is happening the week I have it."
Before Nessie could say anything else about it, Joanie brought our food and I was relieved. While I wasn't a prude or anything or embarrassed to talk about it, it just felt weird. Especially talking to someone who didn't have one.
As we were getting into my truck, my phone vibrated. I sat in the truck and grabbed it out of my pocket, thinking it was probably either Kyle or Emmett. It was neither but instead was my-speaking of the devil-period app. Your period is 4 days late. Did you forget to input your period?
I opened the app, thinking it had to be wrong. My last period was just...my thoughts trailed off as I looked at the calendar and saw my last period was the end of September.
I froze, panic running through my mind. Okay, it had be wrong. I had to have had a period in October or November. I racked my brain, trying to think of the last time I had bought tampons.
"Del, what's wrong?" Nessie asked, concerned. I shook my head, still in a bit of a panic.
The last time I could remember was when I had Kathryn buy them back in September.
"I...I.." I let out a breath. "I haven't had a period since September."
Nessie's mouth dropped open. "Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure. The last one was the last week of September." I said quickly. "Oh my God, Nessie. What if...what if I'm pregnant?"
Just saying the words made the world spin and I leaned forward, putting my head between my knees.
"Okay, okay, listen we're not going to panic." Nessie's voice sounded far away though I could feel her breath on my ear. "There's a pharmacy right down the street. Let me drive."
We swapped seats and Nessie drove us to the store. She glanced over at my pale face. "Stay here. I'll go in and get a test then we'll know."
"Thank you." I whispered, leaning my head against the window. Nessie was a great best friend.
…..
Emmett POV
Jake and I were playing games waiting for the girls to come home when I noticed Alice zoning out over her magazine. "Alice." I said her name but she didn't answer. Meeting Jasper's eyes, I figured she was having a vision.
"Oh!" She let out a gasp and fell back against the couch. Now she had everyone's attention. I could see Edward staring at her intensely.
"What was that?" Edward demanded and Alice looked over at him, irritated.
"You saw as much as I did. I don't know." Alice snapped at him and I felt the first tinge of uneasiness run through me. Then they both looked at me and I felt even worse
"What? What happened?" I asked them both as they looked away. "Did something happen to Delilah?"
They looked at me again before looking at each other. I stood up quickly. "Tell me!" I shouted at them both, a bit panicked.
"Delilah wasn't the one who I had the vision of." Alice said slowly and I was confused. Alice sighed and came over to put her hand on my arm. "It was a decision made by Aro. They've decided to have another visit to check on Nessie."
If at all possible, I felt cold. "The Volturi—they're coming here?" I whispered, my thoughts racing. Delilah. They couldn't find out about Delilah. They'd kill her—or insist I change her.
"What do we do?" Bella asked, coming up to stand by me. She glanced up at me worriedly. "If…if they find out about Delilah…"
"What if we go back to Washington? Do you have any kind of time-frame for when they're coming?" Jake was in alpha and imprint mode. He'd do anything to protect Nessie.
Alice closed her eyes. "There's snow on the ground, the trees are barren. Soon?" Too soon.
"Why do they want to check on Nessie?" Jake asked harshly. "They just checked on her back when—" Jake cut off, looking at me. Back when Rose died is what he was going to say.
"It does seem to be a short amount of time for them to visit again." Carlisle spoke up. "But maybe Jacob is right. Maybe we should try to be in Washington when they come. Keep them away from here."
I glanced at Edward, speaking what we were all thinking but didn't want to say. "The moment Aro touches any of us, they'll know about her." It was quiet. They knew I wasn't talking about Nessie.
Edward nodded slowly. "We won't be able to hide it. Not from Aro."
"What if—" Esme started then paused. We all turned to look at her. "We could promise them—"
"NO!" I shouted, startling them all. "We cannot promise them we'd turn her. I can't take Delilah's choice away from her. It was different with Bella. She wanted this life. Delilah…Delilah hasn't made up her mind yet."
"Em, it might be our only choice if the Volturi find out about her." Jasper said quietly. "It's either that or they kill her."
I felt sick as I thought of it. "I…I…" I couldn't speak. I tried to breathe and couldn't. I bent over, trying to catch my breath, even as I knew I didn't need it. Jasper sent calming waves out and Bella pulled me to the sofa.
Jake looked up as the sound of Delilah's truck pulling up hit all of us. "We've gotta act normal until she's gone." I told them all. "She can't know. Not until we have a game plan together."
Slowly, they all one by one nodded. The door opened and there she was. Nessie right beside her, holding her arm.
"Hello Sweetheart." Esme hugged Delilah and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Did you two have a good time together?"
"Um yeah, we did, but um we both gotta do something." Nessie said quickly and immediately I knew there was something going on. Did Nessie hear us?
Edward and I exchanged glances and he shrugged. She must be blocking him out. Jake went over to Nessie to hug her and went to grab her bag. She yanked it back out of his grasp. "We really gotta do something."
Jake chuckled. "What is with you, Ness? Got some goodies in your bag I can't see?"
He went to grab it again and that's when her bag contents fell all over the floor.
…..
Delilah POV
I watched in horror as Nessie's bag spilled all over the floor. In front of everyone. My heart literally stopped—or so I think anyways.
Jake bent over to help her pick it up and his hands lifted something up. Oh God. Oh No. Jake's face changed as he realized what it was. "Ness…"
She turned to look at me, her face a mirror of my panic. I looked up at the ceiling before grabbing the test out of Jake's hand and rushing up the stairs.
…..
Emmett POV
I don't think any of us had ever frozen like that. I sat there in shock as Delilah ran up the stairs after grabbing the…pregnancy test out of Jake's hands.
Nessie ran after Delilah and I couldn't think straight. Pregnant? Delilah? I met Edward's eyes and we both knew what this meant.
Carlisle cleared his throat and stood up. "I'm going to...go check on them."
Jasper pulled me up. "Dude, you need to go upstairs. Now."
Feeling like I was watching myself from above, I walked slowly up the stairs and saw Carlisle standing at our bathroom door. "Delilah, please, it's Carlisle. Can I come in?"
I stood next to him as I heard a package being opened and crying. Carlisle looked over at me worriedly. "Delilah, I…please."
The door cracked open and Nessie peaked out. She gestured for Carlisle to come in. I couldn't move but watched as my father figure went into the bathroom with my…pregnant?...human girlfriend.
….
Delilah POV
I sat on the closed toilet, tears blurring my vision, as Carlisle crouched in front of me. "Delilah, let me take that." Carlisle took the unopened test out of my hands and sat it on the counter. Then he touched my chin and made me look at him. His golden eyes held worry and concern as he looked into my face.
"Carlisle…" I whispered. "I'm late."
Carlisle nodded, his face serious. "Okay. Let's do this, we'll go to the hospital, I'll take you straight up to where I can do an ultrasound. It's the fastest way to know, okay? We'll find out right now."
"What if I am?" I whispered, my body shaking. "I…I'll have to change."
"Let's not worry about that until we confirm anything, okay?" He said, helping me up. He looked over at Nessie. "Grab her coat there, Nessie."
Nessie handed him my coat and he helped me put it on before opening the door. Emmett stood there, seemingly frozen. He came out of it when he saw me. "Del." He whispered and Carlisle released me to let Emmett hold me. "It's gonna be okay. We'll figure this out, okay, babe?"
I nodded, feeling slightly better as he put his arm around me. The ride to the hospital was a blur. All I could remember was Emmett's hand in mine. His other one rubbing my shoulder. The next thing I knew was I was standing in front of a bed.
Emmett helped me out of my pants after Carlisle left the room. After removing my shirt, he helped me into a gown. "Just lay up here, okay?"
…
Emmett POV
I snapped out of my frozen stupor as Carlisle led Delilah out of the bathroom. She looked paler than us and terrified. "Del." Her name popped out of my mouth and Carlisle moved back so I could hold her. If I was scared, she had to be 100 times more scared. "It's gonna be okay. We'll figure this out, okay, babe?"
She nodded woodenly as I helped her out to Carlisle's car. I could see the worry on my family's face as we passed them and Bella even went to come with before I shook my head. We needed to do this alone.
All of us were quiet as we rode to the hospital. All I could think is what if Delilah was pregnant? I winced thinking of Bella's pregnancy with Nessie. It had almost killed Bella. Hell, it had killed Bella if you wanted to be technical.
What if the condoms didn't work like Elliot said they did? Hell, he was a human blood drinker, he could have killed them immediately, so how would he know if they got pregnant or not if they died immediately afterwards? Delilah and I…we had that scare just back at our anniversary dinner. What if it had happened then?
I wouldn't be able to sit there and watch Delilah wither away as she grew a baby. My baby. For a moment, a fantasy played in my head. Delilah, round with my child, glowing as she put her hands over her belly. Delilah, looking like a beautiful mess, holding a child in her arms, with dark hair like mine before handing the child to me, calling me Daddy. Then a little girl, a few years old, looking just like her mother, running up to me. Her eyes mirrored Delilah's.
"We're here." Carlisle's voice pulled me out of my daydream. He led us up to a private room and then stepped out after handing me a gown to help Delilah into. I helped her undress and I couldn't help but glance at her stomach. It looked like her usual stomach, no bump like Bella had when she had gotten pregnant.
Once she was in the gown, I gestured towards the bed. "Just lay up here, okay?"
…..
Delilah POV
Carlisle came back in and turned the machine on. "Okay, Delilah, I'm going to ask you to lift your gown up to here." Carlisle tapped the top of my stomach and handed me a sheet. "This goes from your underwear down so it covers your bottom half."
I did and looked up at the ceiling as I heard the machine turning on. What would I do if I was pregnant? Remembering the talk that Emmett and I had, I'd have to be changed immediately following the child's birth.
And how would I explain the excessive growth to Kyle and Kathryn? How would I say goodbye to them? I knew once I was heavily pregnant, I'd no longer be able to see them. Once I was changed, I'd never see them again.
A baby. For a moment, instead of a scary thought, a beautiful one popped into my head. Me and Emmett, hands on my growing belly and Emmett was smiling. His eyes were dark brown and I realized why they looked different—they weren't the golden color he had when he had hunted or the black when he was hungry. They were human colored. The dream continued when I was holding a baby in my arms. A dark haired little boy. Emmett looking down at me, tears coming down his face as he looked at our son. I handed him to Emmett then, to his Daddy. Then it was a little boy, about two years old, with bouncing dark curls and brown eyes. Emmett picked him up and swung him, the little boy giggling with excited happiness.
"Delilah?" I was pulled out of my thoughts as Carlisle's voice reached me. I glanced at him and he held a bottle. My heart ached "I'm going to put the gel on now."
I nodded and he squirted a warm gel on my belly. Emmett took my hand and kissed it. "No matter what is on here, we're in this together, okay?"
I met his eyes, beautiful golden eyes, and nodded. Carlisle put the device down on the gel on my belly and started searching. Emmett and I turned towards the screen. All I could see was silver and black. I wasn't sure what we were looking for.
"Well?" I asked Carlisle as he moved around. He held up a finger to tell me to give him a minute. Emmett squeezed my hand as Carlisle continued.
A moment later, Carlisle stopped and shut off the machine. He gave me a towel and I wiped off the gel. Carlisle looked at us both but I couldn't read his face.
"So?" Emmett asked, worry in his voice. Carlisle smiled.
"You are not pregnant, Delilah."
We both sighed in relief but as I turned to look at Emmett, this little part of my heart ached.
…..
Alice POV
I watched as Emmett and Delilah walked out the door. They wanted some alone time to talk. We had found out earlier that they weren't pregnant—thank God—but I couldn't shake the vision that had played in my head earlier.
A child. A little girl, about five years old and dark blonde hair. Even though she was a stranger, I could tell she was Delilah's daughter. She was laughing as someone grabbed her up. That someone was Delilah. She was older, maybe late twenties and she looked happy. I could see a bump—another child on the way.
I knew what the vision meant. It meant that Delilah had decided—even maybe subconsciously—that she wanted children and in the vision she was having more than one. I sighed, thinking of exactly what it meant. Her children were human and so was she. It meant…if she chose that path, it wouldn't be with Emmett.
"You okay, Darling?" Jasper asked, putting down his history book he was reading. I glanced over at him and nodded.
"It's just been an eventful day in my head." I said pouting a little and Jasper chuckled.
"Isn't every day?"
…
Delilah POV
I looked up and realized I was at the cabin in Tennessee again. I excitedly looked at the swing and there she was. My Aunt Rosalie. "You're back." I said in surprise. She smiled though it didn't reach her eyes.
"I am." She patted the empty seat beside her and I went to her, sitting down.
"Why are you sad?" I asked as we rocked slowly back and forth. She was quiet for another moment.
"Do you remember that little ache you had earlier, the twinge of disappointment you felt when you realized you weren't pregnant?" Rosalie asked quietly.
"You saw that?" I questioned, a bit surprised. Rosalie nodded.
"I see a lot." Rosalie smiled briefly.
I grabbed her hand and it was warm. "Why are you sad?"
"You made a decision today."
I frowned, not knowing what she meant. "What decision?"
"For a moment—however brief—you wanted a child." Rosalie said softly.
"I—it was just for a moment. I'm still not sure." I replied, looking away from her. Rosalie sighed.
"But don't you understand what it means?"
"It doesn't mean anything." I answered firmly, crossing my arms. "It was a fantasy, a dream. Because while, yes, I wanted a child, it was Emmett's child I wanted and we both know that's not possible. Well, possible but it'll pretty much kill me and I'd have to give up everything else in my life."
Rosalie shook her head. "Whether it was a fantasy or a dream doesn't matter. You know what it means if you want a child." I shook my head quickly, wanting her to stop. "It means you want a normal life. And I don't blame you. I wanted a child. So badly."
"No. NO. I don't know what I want in my future." I shook my head. "Besides Emmett. I know I want Emmett."
Rosalie smiled sadly. "I wanted Emmett too but to be honest? I probably would have given my life with him to have a child."
"No. I…no, I love Emmett. I don't even think I want kids. I mean look at part of my childhood. It was awful. I don't…I don't know how to be a parent. It's just better if I don't have a kid."
Rosalie looked down at our entwined hands. "You may have had a rough few years, but you could do it if you wanted to." Rosalie sighed. "Listen, I'm not saying to leave Emmett, I'm just saying…really think about what you want before you make a permanent decision. Only be changed if you want to be, okay?"
I nodded. "I won't make that decision hastily. I know the consequences."
The sky darkened and Rosalie looked worried. "There's trouble on the horizon."
"What trouble I asked?"
Rosalie shook her head. "I can't tell exactly. I just know there's trouble. Be careful, will you?"
I nodded. "Of course—"
I was pulled out of my dream by shouts. I jumped out of my bed and dashed out the door. "What's going on?" I asked Kathryn as I rushed down the stairs to join her. She was in her PJs.
She stopped to face me and fear covered her face. "The barns are on fire."
