Kurayami…Haruna…
The voice called her again. Summer break was ending soon, and the voice kept calling her this whole time.
"Where are you?" she asked, looking around the clouds that she had now gotten used to.
Why can't you hear me…? My name is….
Again, the name of whoever was calling her was blurred, but other than the name, the voice was louder and clearer than before. It was the voice of a man, a deep, deep voice that rang around her ears every time it spoke.
"I can hear you, but I can't hear your name!"
I guess it's not time yet…
"Time for what?" she asked, but there was no reply. She opened her eyes and found herself in her room. It was morning already.
"Haruna-sama," a maid called outside of her door. "Breakfast is ready."
"Yes," she answered. "I'll be out soon."
"Haruna," Hayato called her. "Are you okay?"
"Huh?" she replied. "Yeah, why do you ask?"
"You have bags under your eyes," he said, looking concerned.
"I'm fine," she said. "I've just been having weird dreams lately that wake me up in the middle of the night. I'll be okay."
"Okay, just don't force yourself. Remember, the Academy starts back next week."
"Don't worry. I promise I'll be okay," she said as she finished her food. "Thank you for the meal!" she said as she stood up. "I have to go now. I might be late, so have dinner without me!"
Haruna ran to Ukitake's house, where the three had agreed to meet.
"Good morning, Haruna-chan," said Kyoraku who was already there.
"Good morning," she replied. "You're early."
"Yeah," he said, "I woke up from a dream and couldn't get myself back to sleep, so I came out early."
"A dream?" she asked.
"Yeah," Kyoraku replied. "I've been having this same dream for a while, actually."
"What dream?" asked Ukitake while coming out of his residence.
"Good morning, Ukitake," Kyoraku said.
"Good morning, Kyoraku," he replied. Then he turned to Haruna and said, "Good morning, Haruna."
"Go-good morning," she said. She then quickly asked Kyoraku, "What dream?"
"Well," he started, "it's really weird. A woman's voice keeps calling me."
"I don't think it's that weird coming from you…" Haruna said, teasing.
"Yeah, I agree," Ukitake said, also teasing.
"No, I mean," Kyoraku explained, "usually, I wouldn't think it's weird either, but the same voice has been calling me almost every night, and she'll tell me to play games with her, but when I ask her name, she just mumbles. I can't even see her face since everything is so dark around me."
Ukitake and Haruna thought for a while. Then, they both remembered something at the same time.
"What…" they both said. Then, even more surprised at the fact that they had realized something at the same time, they looked at each other and repeated, "What?"
"I've been having a similar dream, except it's a man's voice for me, and I'm always up in the clouds where the sunlight is too bright.," Haruna exclaimed.
"And I've been having the same dream but with two children's voices, and I'm always underwater," Ukitake said.
The three stood in front of Ukitake's house, thinking of what this meant.
"If they're trying to tell us their names, do you think…" Kyoraku broke the silence.
"Zanpakutous are souls, too, right?" Haruna asked.
"And each Zanpakutou has a unique name that they'll tell their owners…" Ukitake said.
"So that means…" Kyoraku said. The three looked at each other back and forth, confused at the sudden development of the situation.
"I thought we weren't supposed to get our Zanpakutous until after we graduated…." Haruna said.
"Do you think we should ask someone…?" Kyoraku said.
"Maybe," Ukitake said.
"We could ask my brother…" Haruna said, still confused. She turned around and headed back home with her two friends behind her.
"I'm home," Haruna said to her brother, who was still in his night clothes.
"Haruna," Hayato said, surprised. "I thought you were going to be home late and it hasn't even been an hour since you left."
"Yeah," Haruna said, "that was the plan, but there's something we'd like to ask you."
Hayato looked at his sister and her friends and knew exactly what they were going to ask. He had seen lights come out of Haruna's room, and every time those lights came out, a somewhat different reiatsu had been coming out of her. He knew what they had come for.
"Sure," he said with a smirk, "I have some time before I have to go to the hospital." He turned around to Kenjirou, who was behind him, and said, "Could you bring us tea to the garden?"
"Yes, Hayato-san," Kenjirou replied and went towards the kitchen to ask for tea.
In the garden, they all stayed quiet until tea was served.
"So," Hayato finally spoke, "What did you want to ask?" He asked even though he knew why the three had come to him.
"When do Shinigamis usually get their own Zanpakuto?" Haruna asked directly.
Hayato was surprised by how direct Haruna had been but smiled while thinking, That's my sister. "It's different for everyone," he replied. "Some people get it in their childhood, and some others get it when they're old. It really just depends on how strong your body, mind, and soul are, and how well balanced the three are."
"So I guess it's different with everyone," Haruna said.
"Yes," Hayato replied.
They stayed quiet for another while before Hayato stood up.
"I'm going to change first," he said, "and then I'll help you three train for today."
"What about your work?" Haruna asked.
"I can make some time for you in the morning," he replied. Then he turned around to Kenjirou and said, "tell the hospital wing to call me if anything urgent happens."
"Yes, Hayato-sama," Kenjirou replied.
"You three wait for me here," Hayato said as he left with Kenjirou.
The three of them looked at each other confused at what was happening. They were excited to know that it wasn't too early to get their Zanpakutos, and that maybe the dreams they'd been having are a sign of it. They just had to wait more to find out what happens.
They arrived at the garden.
"Now," Hayato said, standing in the middle of the garden, "the three of you, come at me with all you have."
"Huh?!" the three exclaimed in surprise.
"What?" Hayato said with a smirk. "You think I can't handle three kids?
"Well, no… I mean…" Haruna stuttered.
"It's okay, so come at me," Hayato said.
"Hayato-san, you seem to be enjoying yourself right now," Kyoraku said.
"Of course I am!" Hayato said while stretching his whole body. "It's been so long since I've done exercise of any kind, since I'm always in the hospital wing treating patients. Now, now, stop hesitating and come at me."
They spent the next couple hours sparring non-stop, until the three students ran out of breath and couldn't go on.
"You guys are pretty good," Hayato said, panting.
"Not as good as you, Kurayami-sensei," Ukitake said. He was on the floor breathing heavily.
"Juushiro," Haruna said, while catching her breath. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Ukitake said, "I think I'll manage somehow."
"I see your health has improved a lot, Ukitake," Hayato said.
"It's all thanks to you and your sister, Kurayami-sensei," Ukitake replied. "The medicine you've been giving me has helped a lot. Thank you."
"But still," Haruna said, "you shouldn't push yourself too much. Remember, the medicine only alleviates your symptoms, but it won't cure your disease."
"I know, Haruna," Ukitake said, sitting up on the floor. "I am okay."
"Are you sure?" Haruna asked.
"Yeah, I promise," Ukitake reassured her with a smile.
"Let me check," Haruna walked to him.
"I really am fine, Haruna," Ukitake said.
"Just listen to me and let me check," Haruna said, "just in case."
"O-okay…" Ukitake said.
"It seems like they completely forgot we're here too," Hayato said, a little bummed that his little sister was sort of ignoring him.
"Yeah," Kyoraku said. "I think it's cute."
"You, too?" Hayato said. He smiled while looking at Ukitake and Haruna. "I must thank you and Ukitake."
"Huh?" Kyoraku looked at him.
"I've never seen my sister make such expressions. She's changed a lot," he said. "She's become brighter and more expressive in general after meeting you. Thank you."
"That's nothing to thank us for," Kyoraku said. "See, she's not the only one that has changed." He looked at Ukitake, who was also smiling in ways he had never done before. "I've changed too, Hayato-san, and so has Ukitake. I'm grateful to you and your sister for that."
"I really think I should thank you, after all," Hayato said smiling. "Well, I'll be going back to work." He walked towards Haruna and Ukitake. "Haruna, I'll be going back to the hospital wing. Call me if you need anything."
"You're going back already, Onii-chan?" Haruna asked. She got up and then helped Ukitake get up. She walked up to Hayato as Kyoraku walked up to Ukitake to help him stand.
"Yeah," Hayato replied. "It was fun to spar with you, but I feel uneasy leaving the hospital wing."
"Heh," Haruna laughed. "I guess you really fit better inside the hospital than I do."
Hayato patted Haruna's head. "I'm just doing the best I can do in my position. So, you do your best, too." He walked away, into the hospital wing.
I'll do my best, Onii-chan. Haruna thought to herself.
"Ukitake!" Kyorsaku suddenly yelled. "Are you okay?" He was holding Ukitake, who had stumbled after Haruna let go of him.
"S-sorry, Kyoraku," Ukitake said.
"Seriously, Juushiro," Haruna said, worried. "I take my eyes off of you for three seconds and you're like this already. That's why I told you not to overexert yourself."
"I'm sorry," Ukitake said.
"And stop apologizing! It's frustrating!" She said as she helped him up. "Let's go. I'll take you to the hospital wing." She turned to Kyoraku. "Shunsui, help me."
"Hai, hai," Kyoraku said as he helped Ukitake.
"Sorry, Kyoraku, Haruna. I'm always causing you trouble," Ukitake said.
"I told you to stop apologizing," Haruna said, glaring at him.
"Yes," Ukitake said. When Haruna turned around to look in front of them, he smiled gently, and Kyoraku smiled with him when he noticed.
When they arrived at the hospital wing, they went straight to the First room. Ukitake was put on a bed in a private room so that he could rest.
"Shunsui," Haruna said, "you should go home and rest for today."
"Can I just stay here?" Kyoraku asked. "I'd feel more at ease if I stayed with Ukitake."
"Hmm," Haruna said. "But I'll be staying here either way."
"Well, then I'll keep you company." Kyoraku was smiling goofily.
"Well," Haruna said, "if you insist…"
For a while they talked nonstop, and they had lunch inside the room where Ukitake was staying. They talked about how strong Hayato was, and how they still needed to train more and learn more. Then they talked about Ukitake's health, and how he needed to take more care of himself. After a couple hours of talking, they all fell asleep: training with Hayato had completely drained their energy.
Kurayami… Haruna…
"That voice again… Where are you?"
Haruna was standing on the clouds again. The light engulfing her was stronger than before, so much so that the whole place looked almost white.
I am here… I have always been here…
"Here where?"
Right in front of you, all the time…
"In front of me…?"
Open the eyes of your heart, and you will see me…
The voice was getting clearer by the second.
"Please, let me see you…"
I've always let you see me, but your heart wasn't prepared…
"When will I be able to see you…?"
Look closely, Kurayami Haruna…
Haruna closed her eyes and faced up. When she opened her eyes and looked in front, she saw a white dragon in front of her. It was curled up like a serpent, with its wings folded behind.
"Are you the one that's been calling me?"
Yes… You can finally see me…
Haruna then saw a person in the center of the curled-up dragon. When she looked closely, she saw it wasn't a person, but an angel who was standing there.
"Who… who are you…?"
Do you want to know my name?
"Yes… Tell me, please. I want to know."
My name is… Ten no Ryu…
Haruna woke up sitting on the bed where Ukitake was lying down. On the floor, where she had left her Asauchi, there were two pure white katana. The moment she held them, she felt the presence of the dragon and the angel in her dream.
"Ten no Ryu… Heaven's Dragon…" she whispered.
Suddenly, Kyoraku, who was sleeping on the bed next to Ukitake, woke up yelling, "Katen Kyokotsu!" and holding one katana in each hand, one shorter than the other.
"Shunsui…?" she called him, looking at him and his two swords. "Are you okay?"
"Y-yeah… It's just that…" Shunsui said, looking at his two katanas. "She finally told me her name…"
"You too?!" Haruna exclaimed.
"Wait, does that mean…" Kyoraku said in awe.
"Haruna… Kyoraku…" Ukitake said as he woke up. He looked at the katana that was next to his pillow.
"Juushiro, that katana…" Haruna said.
"Yeah… they finally told me their names… Sougyo no Kotowari…"
That's it for this chapter! I will update soon!
