Episode 17: Target Teamwork
Remaining Competitors: Samus, Cloud, Isabelle, Link, Captain Falcon, Marth
We start with Sakurai giving the recap.
"Last time on Super Smash Island," Sakurai said, "Everyone was forced to hide, but this time, Master Hand was doing the hunting. Master Hand was catching everyone one by one, but Marth chose to hide near him since no one would go near Master Hand. Ryu had the chance to take down Marth, but let his morals as a fighter get in the way, securing another win for Marth. Ryu was sent home because of this. What kind of challenge will the final six partake in today? Who will be eliminated next? Find out on today's exciting episode of Super...Smash...Island!"
Cue intro
We start in the morning with everyone at breakfast. Everyone was sitting at the same table. It's just another one of those quiet days, with everyone quietly eating what Crazy Hand calls "food"
Confessional
The confessional opens up with Marth.
"With the competition getting smaller," he said, "it's high time I figure out who to eliminate next. I'm torn between Samus and Cloud, because those two are the biggest threats to me right now. Both have shown how capable they can be, and they need to go immediately. The rest of them are just easy fodder."
The confessional then transitions to Captain Falcon.
"Aw yeah, baby!" He said, "I'm SUPER excited to have made it this far! After all we've been through, I just gotta keep on trucking! Man, I bet Lucina is so proud of me right now! If you're watching this, I miss you baby!"
End of Confessional
Sakurai walks in to see how everyone is doing.
"Good morning, everyone! How are you all this morning?" Sakurai asked.
"Great. Thanks for asking." Falcon said.
"Yeah, everything's great." Marth said sarcastically, "The food on the other hand…"
"Yeah, can't we just order a pizza or something?" Link asked.
Suddenly, a meat cleaver whizzed past him and hits the wall. They all look and see Crazy Hand holding several more cleavers.
"You know, that really grinds my gears when you insult my cooking." Crazy Hand said, "I'm trying my best here cooking for you ungrateful brats."
"Yeah, well maybe if breakfast wasn't green!" Marth said, "This isn't a Dr. Seuss book!"
"That means it's fresh!" Crazy Hand said.
"Yeah, fresh out of hell." Cloud said.
"Anyway, changing the subject," Sakurai said, "it's time for today's challenge. And I think you're all gonna like it."
"I highly doubt it." Samus said.
"Oh come on, this challenge is gonna be more of a Smash based one." Sakurai told them.
"Wait, is it home run contest?" Falcon asked.
"Nope." Sakurai said.
"Board the platform?" Link asked.
"Nope." Sakurai answered again.
"Smash run?" Cloud asked.
"Not even close." Sakurai said.
"Then what is it?" Samus asked.
"It's gonna be a fun match of break the targets!" Sakurai told them.
"That actually sounds like fun." Isabelle said.
"Oh it is!" Sakurai said, "Around the island there are fifty targets for you guys to break. The challenge will go on until all the targets are broken. The team that breaks the most wins."
"Teams? What are you talking about?" Marth said, "I thought there were no more teams."
Sakurai then snaps his fingers. They then see Master Hand come up to them and handcuff Marth and Samus together.
"Okay, what's going on here?" Samus said.
He then handcuffs Link and Cloud together.
"What gives?" Link asked.
Finally he cuffs Captain Falcon and Isabelle together.
"Why are we handcuffed together?" Link asked.
"By team, I meant working in pairs." Sakurai said, "You will each work as pairs to find and break targets. That means that this time, there will be two people who will be safe from elimination. How's that for raising the stakes?"
"That's nice and all," Samus said, "but can I switch partners? I don't want to be paired up with HIM!"
"The feeling is mutual." Marth said.
"All pairings are final." Sakurai said, "The point is you will each have to get along with and work together with your partner to win."
"Well, I have no complaints with it." Falcon said.
"That's because you're not working with a total scumbag!" Samus said.
"Hey, I don't like this either!" Marth said.
"Haven't you all ever heard that there's no "I" in team?" Sakurai said.
"Well, there is no "we", "us", or "our" in team either." Cloud said.
Sakurai is speechless at this comment.
"Anyway…if you can't work together with your partner, then that's your problem. Oh yeah….there is one more thing I have to tell you all."
"And what's that?" Link asked.
"There is one golden target out there. Break it, and that's the equivalent of breaking ten normal targets. It could mean the difference between winning and losing. Your challenge starts now. Good luck." Sakurai told them.
He then walks out of there leaving them on their own. They all head outside to get started.
Confessional
This time it's Link and Cloud in there talking.
"I really don't want to have to do this." Cloud said, "Things have been fine working on my own this far.
"Uh...you do know I can hear you." Link said.
End of Confessional
"Okay, let's get one thing straight." Samus said, "I don't like you…"
"And I really don't like you!" Marth said.
"But if we're going to win this, we have to see eye to eye on this." She said.
"I'm sure." He said, "Too bad you could never do that with Mac."
"Grrrr. Until this is over, can you please not say anything that would cause me to rip you in half." She said.
"I'll try, but that's asking a lot." He said.
"Okay, I think we should go this way to start." She said.
She begins walking, but is pulled back by Marth.
"Actually, I think that we should go THIS way." He said.
The two of them start arguing on where to go, while Isabelle and Captain Falcon are already heading out.
"It's such a shame that she has to be stuck with him." Isabelle said, "I'm worried about her."
"Yeah, but we can't worry about that right now." Falcon said.
"You're right." She said, "For this challenge, we actually make a really great team."
"What do you know, there's the first target!" Falcon said.
They see one on a nearby tree and the two of them run over to it. Cap then punches the target, shattering it.
"Booyah! The was easy." He said.
Isabelle: Yeah, but there's still forty-nine more to go.
Falcon: Maybe we'll get lucky and find that golden target.
The two of them keep moving on. We then move Cloud and Link, who've started looking for the targets. Link is leading the way, and Cloud is looking moody.
"Okay, where should we start?" Link asked.
"Uh huh." Cloud said uninterested.
"Look, I know you don't approve of this whole working together thing," Link told him, "but you want to win, right?"
"Yeah."
"Then I need your full cooperation. Can you do that for me?"
"Yes. And by the way, you don't have to talk to me like I'm a kid. Besides, there's a target."
He looks at where Cloud is pointing, and sees a target on the back of a squirrel.
"I'm not even going to question how they got a target on that squirrel." Link said.
Link quickly pulls out his bow and arrows, takes aim, and quickly breaks the target.
"Not a bad way to start, but we need to pick up the pace." Link said, "I wonder how many targets the others have smashed."
"Who knows." Cloud said, "I bet Samus and Marth haven't gotten any. I'll bet you they're still yelling at each other."
We then move to the two of them, and they're walking around the campgrounds looking for targets, still bickering at each other.
"You'd think they'd be easy to find." Samus said.
"Well, maybe they're just hiding from you." Marth said.
"Make one more rude comment, and I'm going to smash the targets with your skull!" Samus threatened.
"Alright, I'll stop! Geez!" He said.
"Wait! Look up there!" She said.
He looks up and they see a hawk circling over them, and under that hawk is a target.
"Impressive. How'd you see it?" Marth asked.
"I just have good vision." She said, "But how do we hit it from down here?"
"I'll handle this." He said.
He picks up a rock, and throws it at the bird, breaking the target and knocking the bird out of the air.
"Impressive. That's some arm." She said.
"Well, when you use a sword a lot, you tend to get a really strong arm." He explained.
"Maybe we actually can work together." She said.
"Maybe." He said.
The two of them are silent for a moment.
"This changes nothing between us. We're still enemies." Samus said.
"Agreed." Marth said, "Once this challenge is over, we'll go back to being at each others' throats."
Confessional
Again the two of them are in there, still cuffed together.
"Just because we may actually pull off working together for this challenge doesn't mean I forgive all the stuff he pulled." Samus said, "The thought of working with him still disgusts me."
"Like I care." Marth said, "I don't like this or you either."
End of Confessional
The two of them continue searching for targets when they see a couple more targets on the roof of one of the cabins.
"How do we get up there? Marth asked.
"Here." She said, "Step on my hands, I'll lift you up, and you pull me up once you're up there."
They go through with her plan and they both manage to get on the roof. They see two targets and stomp on them.
"Well let's get down from here." She said.
She jumps down off the roof and drags Marth down with her. She lands on her feet while Marth falls on his face.
"You're just enjoying this, aren't you?" Marth asked.
Samus just gives him a sly grin.
"A little." She said.
We then move back to Cap and Isabelle, and so far they've managed to break ten targets in total.
"Man, we are on a roll!" Falcon said, "I think out of the others, we're the most cooperative duo!"
"Yeah." Isabelle said.
"I tell you, they seem to be putting the targets in the most awkward places. How many have we gotten so far?" He asked.
"Ten, I think." She said.
"Wow, then we must be in the lead."
"I don't know...I know those other groups have their faults, but I'm sure they've been just as busy as we are."
We then move back to Cloud and Link. They have at least gotten about fifteen targets, and we're looking at the docks.
"Hey look, there's one in the water." Cloud said.
They see a target that's floating in the water, but sharks are swimming around it.
"I don't know if we should go after that one." Link said, "How will we deal with those sharks? Maybe we should just skip over this one."
"Not a chance." Cloud said, "The more we break, the better chance we have to win. Even missing one could probably make us lose."
"Then how do we get to that one without becoming shark food?" Link asked.
Cloud is thinking for a moment, and then has an idea.
"Okay, this will be risky, but it might just work." He said.
"And what's that?" Link asked.
"Shoot the target from here with your arrows. On the one hand, this will work. On the other hand, if you miss...it may not work and just make them mad at us."
"Yeah, that makes me feel a lot better." Link said sounding worried.
He pulls out his archery gear and takes aim. He shoots and manages to smash the target.
"Man, this target breaking takes me back." Link said.
"We must keep moving on. Now is not the time to reminisce." Cloud said.
"You're right. At least lighten up, though."
"That's easy for you guys." Cloud said.
"You weren't like this when the competition first started." Link said, "What happened?
"I was weak." Cloud said, "I let my guard down, I was too trusting, and I feel as though I've lost so much in this game."
"Quit blaming yourself for all of that." Link said, "We've all been tricked at some point. You're not the only one feeling like that."
"I'm simply using my feelings to keep going." Cloud said, "It's not holding me back. Look at how far we've come."
"But all that stress and worrying isn't healthy."
"Look, can we just stop talking about this and continue with the challenge?"
"Okay, I was just trying to help. I'm honestly worried about you."
"It looks as though these teams are starting to get along….more or less." Sakurai said, "Which team will take the win? Find out after the break."
Commercial Break
We now move back to Samus and Marth, looking through the cabins, breaking a few targets that they found in them.
"Okay, how many does that make?" Samus asked.
"I don't know." Marth said, "I wasn't keeping track. I'm not the one in charge of doing that."
"No one should be!" Samus yelled, "It's common sense to keep a count!"
"How about you quit being such a BITCH!" Marth yelled.
The two of them stand in silence after that comment.
"What did you just call me?" Samus asked darkly.
"You heard me." Marth said.
"You know what?" She said, "I'm just going to do nothing, and then we'll lose! After that, I'm sure we'll all vote you off!"
"Oh no, don't be that guy!" Marth said.
"Oh, I'm going to be that guy!" Samus said.
She the sits down with her arms crossed, not planning to move.
"Don't be like that!" He said, "We are still going to win this!"
He then walks, trying to drag her along while she's still sitting down.
"You know, you won't get very far doing this." She said.
"Watch me."
Then we move back to Cap and Isabelle, who are heading into a cave.
"Hey, you got a flashlight in those magic pockets of yours?" Falcon asked.
"You know it!" She said, "I even carry spare batteries."
She then pulls out a flashlight, and then they head into the cave
"Do you think it's in here?" She asked, "The golden target?"
"Maybe." He said, "Still keeping track on our record?"
"I'm sorry, but I lost count."
"You lost count?"
"Yeah, sorry."
"Well, I think if we find the gold one, I think we should be good. If we find it, I say we call it a day."
They keep going forward until they see a shining light in front of them. It turns out to be the golden target on the wall.
"Wow...it's so shiny. And pretty." Falcon said.
"That was easy." Isabelle said.
"Let's finish this!" He said.
He punches it, but his hand gets smashed from how hard the target is Falcon then screams in pain.
"Are you okay?" Isabelle asked.
"No!" Falcon said, "What is that thing made of?!"
She gives the target a tap.
"I don't know."
"But we still gotta break it!"
He tries kicking it, but hurts his foot in the process too. He falls to the ground screaming in agony.
"Do you...have any items...that can break it?" Falcon asked.
"I'll see." She said.
She pulls out a mallet and tries to break the target with it, but the mallet breaks. She then pulls out a jackhammer, and that that doesn't work either. She then pulls out some explosives.
"We might wanna step back." She said.
They do so as the explosives go off, and the target doesn't even have a scratch on it.
"Darn." Isabelle said.
They then start hearing someone else in the cave.
"I think I heard the noise this way." Link said.
They see that it's Link and Cloud.
"What are you guys doing in here?" Cloud asked, "Wait, is that the golden target?"
"Yep." Falcon said, "You can try and break it, but I don't know what Sakurai used try make it.
Link and Cloud try try their best to break, but they can't either.
"Well, this is just cruel." Link said.
Cloud keeps using his sword to slash at it, and still nothing.
"Why?! Break already!" Cloud yelled.
All four of them hear a noise like something being dragged, and they see Marth, still dragging Samus behind her.
"Damn, looks like the rest of the rat pack beat us to it!" Marth said.
"Good." Samus said.
"Wait, what's up with her?" Falcon asked.
"She won't help me. She wants us to lose." Marth said.
"That is genius!" Link said.
"What?!" Marth yelled, "You agree with her?"
"Hey, if it's a way to finally get rid of you." Link said.
"You can't be serious!"
"After all you've done to us, I'd do the same thing!" Falcon said.
"That's because I'm that determined to win! You're all just weak!" Marth said.
"Yet we're still here." Cloud said.
"Can't say the same for your precious princess." Marth said, "Or that stupid boxer. Or the assist reject."
Then everyone just erupts into a huge argument. Everyone is yelling except for Samus, who is still sitting there.
Don't talk about her like that! She was my world! I feel alone without her!"
"You should focus more on the game than love!"
"You used me and Mac like tools!"
"You and him were dumb enough to trust me!"
"You framed Fox! And ruined Pit's cooking!"
"They got in the way!"
"You've hurt so many people and still don't care! Waluigi would still be here!"
"Oh please, he was a lost cause from the start!"
They continue arguing, and during this Samus suddenly stands up and takes Marth by the back of the head, and quickly breaks the golden target with his head. The target shatters into pieces. Everyone just goes silent.
"There. Now let's move on." Samus said.
Marth just groans in pain
Confessional
The confessional opens up with Samus.
"That was for Mac." She said.
End of Confessional
"I thought you wanted to lose." Marth groaned.
"Don't get the wrong idea." Samus said, "I only did it to get you to shut your trap."
"You could have killed me!"
Samus: Shoulda, woulda, coulda.
"Okay, how did that break it?" Falcon asked.
"Who cares? He deserved it." Link said.
"Okay, now you all crossed the line." Marth said.
They then hear Sakurai's voice over the loudspeaker.
"All targets have now been smashed!" Sakurai said, "Everyone return to the campgrounds to find out the results!"
"Wait, does anyone know how many targets they smashed?" Falcon asked.
Everyone shakes their heads at this. They all then walk back to the campgrounds together in silence.
"Good job to you all." Sakurai said, "I at least hope that you all learned a valuable lesson in teamwork."
"Oh, a lesson was taught all right." Samus said.
"Anyway, I'm sure that you all don't know how many targets you all broke, so I kept track myself." Sakurai said.
Master Hand brings out a scoreboard with each of their faces.
"First up, with Cloud and Link...17 targets."
"Okay, not bad." Link said.
"Now, Cap and Isabelle...20 targets."
"That's pretty good! We got this." Falcon said.
"And lastly with Samus and did Marth, if we add the golden target...23 targets. Samus and Marth have won the challenge!"
"You got lucky this time." Samus said.
"Oh, I will pay you back for this victory." Marth said.
"Look on the bright side. You won, right?" Samus said sarcastically.
"Now, Master Hand, if you would…"
Master Hand goes up to all of them and unlocks all of the handcuffs.
"Thank god!" Marth said, "I was close to chopping my hand off."
"Now this means that the two of them are safe from elimination." Sakurai said, "I will be seeing you all at the bonfire tonight."
Confessional
The confessional opens up with Link.
"This stinks." Link said, "Two people are safe. And one of them is Marth. I don't really want to vote for anyone else here."
The confessional then transitions to Marth.
"Since I can't vote Samus," Marth said, "I have a good choice in mind."
The confessional then transitions to Cloud.
"Since Link was helpful to me today," he said, "I won't pick him. Maybe he's right. Maybe I do need to stop fretting so much. This doesn't mean I'll work with them, though. But maybe I should…..I don't know. I'm just so confused right now."
The confessional then transitions to Isabelle.
"I don't want to vote for my friends anymore." She said, "I like them all, and It breaks my heart to do it. But I now know who I must choose."
End of Confessional
Later that evening, everyone is at the elimination ceremony.
"Today, you all worked together, more or less." Sakurai said, "I was trying to teach a lesson, but I think I made things worse. I have only five smash balls. When I call your name, you are safe.
Sakurai then starts calling out names.
"Samus"
"Marth"
"Captain Falcon"
"And Link"
This leaves Cloud and Isabelle. Cloud starts to look worried, but Isabelle's expression isn't changing.
"Cloud, Isabelle, this is the final smash ball of the night." Sakurai said, "This was a close one, by only one vote. The final smash ball goes to…."
"...Cloud. Isabelle, it's time for you to go.
Cloud sighs in relief.
"Hold up!" Samus said, "How is that possible? I didn't vote for her!"
"Neither did I!" Falcon said.
"That one vote was for myself." Isabelle said.
"What?" Falcon said.
"I voted for myself." Isabelle said.
"But why?" Samus asked.
"Since I couldn't vote for Marth, I knew I had to pick one of you." Isabelle explained, "I didn't want to vote for my friends anymore. After all the arguing earlier, I just didn't like seeing everyone so unhappy. I wanted you all to be happy. So I decided that this is what I should do."
"Yeah, but voting for yourself?" Samus said, "You're just going to give up?"
"It's fine." She said, "I'm satisfied with how far I've come."
"Didn't Waluigi want you to win?" Falcon asked, "How will he react when he finds out you did this?"
"When I see him, I'll talk to him about it. I'm sure he'll understand."
"Are you sure you're okay with this? You didn't have to do that." Samus said.
"It's fine. I had fun."
"I will admit that's quite selfless of you, but it's time to go." Sakurai told her.
"We'll miss you." Falcon said.
"Hope you have a safe trip back." Link said.
"Goodbye, everyone." Isabelle said, "Good luck to all! Hope to see you guys real soon!"
She the heads to the boat, and sails away.
"I can't believe she did that. For us." Samus.
"Yeah." Falcon said, "I don't know how to feel."
"When you think about it," Link said, "this was a tough vote. She's the most nicest person I've ever met, that's for sure. Even if she's giving up the chance for all that money."
"First off, let me congratulate you all for making it to the final five." Sakurai said, "You all shouldn't feel sad, you should feel proud. I hope you all are well rested for the next challenge. You are all dismissed."
Confessional
The confessional opens up with Marth.
"What a twist." He said, "But that still leaves some of my toughest opponents. After today, they've really crossed the line. Just four of them left to go."
The confessional then transitions to Link.
"I just couldn't pick Cloud," he said, "I'll admit we made a good team today. In the end I picked randomly, and decided Isabelle. Sorry about that."
The confessional then transitions to Cloud.
"Everything right now is just so confusing." He said, "I thought for sure that I was done for. Then we find out she decided to vote for herself. I can't believe she would do that. I never thought I'd see someone so self sacrificing. After today, and how well I worked with Link, and that selfless move from Isabelle...maybe I do need to think some stuff over."
End of Confessional
"Whew, that was quite quite a plot twist." Sakurai said, "Never expected that. Just goes to show how nice some people can be. What will our smashers do now that the end is near? Who will be eliminated next? Find out on the next exciting episode of Super...Smash...Island!"

Authors Notes
As promised, I got this one posted quickly. First off, let me give credit for the idea for this challenge. A guest gave me this idea, and whoever you are, thanks for the great idea. I'm really sorry if you wanted Isabelle to win. I always had in my mind that she would vote for herself for her friends. You thought that the lesson today would be teamwork, but the real lesson was about sacrifice. I'd like to know what you all thought of this episode. The next episode will be a fun one, as we will focus as lot on the characters who have already been eliminated. I'm now hard at work on it, and it will be out sometime next week. Till next time;)
