Chapter 17 X The last first kiss

"UxMishi's live performance?" Misaki questioned. The friends were sitting outside eating their lunch when Sakura came up with the topic. "Who are they?"

They all sweat-dropped at the question. "You weren't there, but they were the band that Sakura-chan won those meet-and-greet for." Kagome explained.

The memory popped back in her head and she had to look away as a twitch appeared on her forehead. 'I still don't want to see that bastard though…'

"They're gonna perform in Yumesaki High's Cultural Festival!" Sakura continued. "Didn't Kagome-chan say that he was awful to you?" They could already see a thick mark forming on the brunette's forehead.

"Exactly!" Shizuko grew strangely determined. "Please tell her she can't go, Misaki-san!"

"But he's different now." Sakura tried to defend him. "He supposedly got injured in his last performance and changed his attitude when she visited." Shizuko enlightened.

Both Kagome and Sakura could see the protectiveness of Misaki and Shizuko gloom over them in the form of judgement.

"Gomen ne! But…" the pink haired girl lowered her head, a small blush coming to her cheeks. "He has really changed, and I wanted you guys to know…"

Kagome's eyes were glued on her friend. Somehow, she could see a part of her old self in her. Knowing someone had changed for the better and wanting the people important to her to know.

She smiled. How could she not? She placed a gentle hand on the girl's shoulder, while facing the other two "Minna, shouldn't we support Sakura-chan and go with her?"

The two shared a look before sighing. "Guess I have to go, then…" Misaki also gave a smile.

"I want to go, too!"

Kagome flinched at the voice that was so close to her ears and snapped around. "Takumi!"

"I want to go to Yumesaki High's Cultural Festival!" He tried again, although he sounded very enthusiastic his face didn't say the same.

"Huh? Why?" Kagome question came as a hard ball as she somehow could see a sad and pitiful kitsune behind him. A small blush came on her face as the words of her friends entered her ears.

"Just bring him along!" Sakura said cheerfully.

"He's worried about you!" Shizuko added.

All Kagome could think of were the events of a few days ago, and her blush seemed to spread further across her face.

"Kagome-chan," Misaki spoke with a sigh, knowing it was far too late for the miko. "You're blushing."

"Welcome back, masters!" The usual chant began the moment the customers entered the shop. Takumi had already taken his usual seat in the back, quietly enjoying his parfait.

"Eri Kari… Eri Kalipso! Now, tell me your question." Erika guided as she sat in the fortune teller booth.

"Onegai, Erika-sama!" Shirokawa jumped forward. "Will I…" Sarashina skipped along. "No, will I…" Kurosaki popped up.

"Be together with Kago-chan?" They mused together.

Erika hovered her hands over the cheap crystal ball they had bought for today as it lit up with purple lights. "Let the crystal ball reveal your future with her!"

The trio sat in front of her waiting impatiently for the results. The other maids looked on from a distance. "She's a fitting fortune-teller, but she still lacks some moe points." Satsuki judged her critically.

"But look at her." Subaru said with a soft smile. "She moves as if she's possessed by something." They silently kept on watching as Erika continued her strange performance.

"It has been revealed!" The college girl exclaimed. "I can't see anything, since it's as cloudy as gray matter."

The trio bombarded her with questions. "I can't see anything!" She shouted. "That's everything you need to know! In other words-"

"There is no future for you!" Gon, a frequent part-timer of the shop, said standing beside her. "Which means it'll never happen for you guys!" Sayu finished, another familiar worker.

"That's what the crystal ball says." With those harsh words, Erika ended the fortune-telling session. "You don't need to put it so bluntly!" The Sanbaka cried as they walked out.

"Since fortune-telling is basically just observing people, Kago-chan wouldn't be able to do it. You don't even know about your own feelings." Honoka commented as she came to stand next Kagome who could worry about their relationship.

Then the sound of the door opening made them turn and greet the new customer with a smile. "Welcome back, master!"

Kagome- Ah, in here it's Kago-chan, right." Through the door came Kouga with a carefree smile on his face. His working hours were finally over and he came to visit.

Many of those who knew the two thought that Kouga was trying too hard with his pursuit in love, going as far as to apply as a teacher at her school. But to the lone wolf it was all worth it.

"Kouga-kun." Kagome walked up to him, it didn't surprise her no more to see him at the café, he had become a regular by now. "Do you want a fortune-telling?" She offered.

It was a pointless question, she knew. As a youkai why who lived for hundreds of years why would he want his future told.

"Yeah, why not."

To her surprise Kouga went ahead and took a seat opposite of Erika. "Please tell me future with Kago-chan!" He ordered with a smirk on his face.

"Hai!" Once again the ball began to glow as the maid's hand hovered above it. "I see it." She began. "A paper balloon… that is deflated."

"What?!" Kouga jumped up. "That can't be true! Look closer!" reluctantly Erika took another look in the ball. "I don't see any holes in it." She said in a demotivated voice.

The anger on the wolf's face disappeared and was replaced with a smug smirk. "See! With no holes I can just inflate it again!" His said proudful.

A small giggle came from Erika as she decided to do something extra. "That stubborn optimism of yours just might turn things around in the end." She added.

"I know that without you telling me." Kouga crossed his arms.

"If that's the case, I'll get my future with Kago-chan told as well." Takumi came and stood behind Kouga, ready to sit join and join the event.

The two of them locked eyes and were once again glaring at each other, the image of two canines appeared behind them; a wolf and a fox.

"Then, I shall look into your future." Erika began the moment the blonde had sat down. They all could see the woman's banter slow down before her eyes quickly snapped away at the crystal ball.

'She's totally averting her eyes.' Kagome sweat-dropped, keeping quiet while watching,

"And what's my fortune?" Takumi pushed. "O-Oh yeah, r-right…" again Erika's eyes wandered away from the ball, seeming anxious to tell them what she saw.

"Just tell it to me straight." Takumi edged on. Erika's eyes darted around for a minute before she sighed and renewed her resolve. "You're right. Here goes…"

"The two of you… have no future together!"

The room went quiet.

"I see fire and water in the crystal ball. You two are very incompatible, and a romance between the two of you cannot happen. If you still wish to pursue this relationship, you will have to face a great obstacle. He who's clad in red."

Kouga and Kagome shared a glance. It couldn't be… could Erika truly see the fortune in that crystal ball.

But the miko's eyes quickly shifted back to the blonde, who quietly stood up, paid and left, not saying a word to her.

"Good work! I'll be taking my leave!" Kagome yelled as she left through the backdoor. "You too, Kago-chan!" She heard the manager call after her.

"Eh, Takumi?" The student was leaning to wall opposite of the door, still in his uniform. "You were waiting for me?" Kagome questioned.

"I saw Mr. Third Rate hurrying off somewhere just now." He said, his head nodding to the direction where, who she presumed to be Kouga, left.

"I see." She mused coming to stand by his side. "Does it really bother you that much?" her classmate deadpanned, with a cold voice. "Where did that come from?!" She retorted.

Takumi turned his head around and Kagome could see his mood turning depressed. "He might be waiting for his situation to turn around."

"If Mr. Third Rate were to hit the comeback homerun. I see… So we were that incompatible with each other eh…" He muttered on.

Kagome couldn't help but sweat drop. "Don't tell me that you actually believe that?!"

"More than that I'm worried about the obstacle." He replied. "A man clad in red? What could that possibly mean?" His eyes wondered to Kagome who held a distance look.

"Perhaps more that an obstacle for you… it's an obstacle for me. I don't want to leave you…" Her voice grew quieter as they walked. Until both of them realized what she had said.

"No… wait… T-That's not what I meant." Kagome stammered out, her facer bright red. She turned to face him, only to be met with an equal bright face.

She was mesmerized. It was the first time she had seen Takumi blush like that, but it was short-lived as he retained his composer and gave her a sweet smile instead.

"Let's go." He walked ahead, his hand grabbing hers as the continued down the city roads.

*Sigh*

Kagome couldn't help herself but give a hopeless sigh at the sight of the empty hallway. As a member of the Student Council, it wasn't uncommon to stay behind after school hours.

Now she was the last member ready to go home, but just as she went to grab her shoes and leave, she noticed the mess left from the sports clubs.

She quickly dropped her bag and went to get a groom, scrubbing the floor until it would be clean. Kagome didn't know how long she was working but the sky already turned auburn.

"Phew!" She huffed as she took a pause. Although she was working for a while it seemed like the footprints only had increased. "It's going to take forever…" She mumbled to herself. 'Good thing I don't have to work today.'

"Kagome? What are you doing here?"

The girl turned around when a voice spoke her name. It was Kouga. "I-I'm cleaning!" She said, clutching the broom tighter somehow feeling like she broke the rules. "W-What about you?"

"The teacher's meeting just ended; I was thinking of visiting the old mutt for the dinner tonight." He said as he walked over to her. "Dinner?" She repeated, then the realization hit her.

"I have a dinner with Sesshoumaru-sama and my family to celebrate Jii-chan's early discharge! I totally forgot!" Her hands gripped to her head, letting go of the broom.

"Woow…" Kouga picked up the broom before it fell to the ground, his eyes on Kagome who started to panic. It was a sight he never truly saw. The Kagome he knew was level-headed and smart, caring and kind.

But the Kagome in this time, blushed, gets angry and… panics. He couldn't help but give a smile, he felt like they were becoming closer than ever before.

"Let me help you out." He quickly grabbed a spare broom and began scrubbing. "The quicker we do this the quicker we done." He passed over the other broom back to Kagome

"Arigatou, Kouga-kun." She smiled as she went back to scrubbing. "I should use my demonic speed!" Kouga suddenly jumped.

"Since there is barely anyone left in the school, no one will be there to see it and we'll be done in a flash!" he said as he dumped his broom in the bucket of water that stood in the corner.

"I don't think that's a good idea." Kagome turned to him, although it didn't seem like he was listening. "If you use your speed with a wet broom than-"

*Splash*

"… I'll get soaked…" The two of them stood in silent. The floor cleaned, the wolf dry and the miko drenched. "Kouga-kun…" The girl growled, sounding more like a youkai than the ookami in front of her.

"G-Gomen, Kagome." The wolf whimpered out. The student held her head low, her expression covered by her bangs. But Kouga could guess from the Miko Ki leaking out that she wasn't happy.

Then his eyes landed down towards her chest as he caught sight of something blue. A flush of red went over his face… but he wasn't the only one that noticed… "K-Kagome y-you-"

"Be a bit more aware." Another voice came in and draped a jacket over her, shielding her from more exposure. Her head snapped to the person behind her, it was Takumi. Standing in his black undershirt while Kagome clutched to his dry white shirt.

"W-What are you doing here?!" She stammered, he had absolutely no reason to still be hanging around this late in the school.

Takumi cool and composed face turned laid-back and uncaring. "I went to the café, but Kago-chan wasn't there. So, I thought I'll visit you at the shrine, but your mother told me that you still hadn't come back from school and that you guys had a dinner plans so I figured I would pick you up."

"Why would you do that…?" She wondered out loud. He gave her a smile and casually placed his hands around her shoulder, pulling her closer as he led them outside. "Because I missed you."

The two of them went off, unaware of the dangerous blue eyes that followed after them. "If you look at him like that…" The youkai muttered to himself, left alone in the now clean hallway.

Kouga's hand went to his face, his finger covering his eyes as if even he didn't want to acknowledge the tears that were streaming down. "How can I not give up."

"Once again I lost to a mutt."

-Flashback-

"Kagome." Kouga's voice made her face him as they stood in silence.

"I love you! I've come here to make you my woman for once and for all, this time there is no mutt to stop me! However, I will court you like a ningen and wait until you fall for me."

His declaration placed a blush on her face.

"I…"

She hesitated, searching for the words within her mind. "I…" She tried again. Kagome saw the terrifying anticipation in Kouga's eyes, he took a step closer not wanting her to run away but confront his honest feelings.

"I'm sorry, Kouga-kun." Her voice was soft, almost quiet, but he heard the words loud and clear.

"I met someone here… He's kind and considerate, knowing that I haven't told him anything he stays by my side." Her eyes were casted on the ground as she continued to speak.

"His patience saved me." Their eyes met and Kouga had to hold back a breath. Never in their time in the feudal era did he ever seen that look on her, not even in their fight against Naraku. But now, her eyes were burning with determination. Kagome was confident in her choice.

"I want to be by his side. Using every bit of my heart to love him." She bowed her head, amplifying her feelings. "That's why I cannot accept your feelings, Kouga-kun. Gomennasai."

It stayed quiet. All Kagome could hear was their breathing and the noise from outside. The next class would start in five minutes but neither of them showed signs of leaving.

After a bit Kagome decided to look up and face the wolf demon. The moment she looked at she felt her heart ache. She could see in his blue eyes the pain he was hiding behind the smile.

"I see…" He began with a sigh before showing her a smile. "So, I was too late." It seemed like Kagome had a pained look as well, because Kouga placed his hand on top of her hair, ruffling it up.

"Don't look so sad. I never said I would give up!"

"Eh?"

The two shared a look and Kagome understood what he meant. His confident smirk shined brighter than the sun outside as he made his way to the door. "Don't worry Kagome! You'll always be my woman!"

And with that he left, with Kagome now alone in the room.

"… That silly Ookami…"

-End flashback-

"Welcome to Yumesaki High Cutural Festival!"

"Whoah…!" Kagome looked around the grand school, with many activities waiting to be explored.

"Come on! Let's go!" Sakura pushed her forward as her other friends followed, along with Takumi. "I heard rumors, but to think that it's this grand…" Misaki mumbled as her eyes went over the stalls.

"Seems like it's their school's tradition." Shizuko said from besides her. "I've heard they've spent half a year preparing for this." Sakura added.

They've kept walking until they stumbled upon the crowd of the concert. "Kyaa! I see Kuuga-kun!" And as quickly as that Sakura had disappeared in the see of people with Shizuko and Misaki following after her.

It didn't take long for Kagome's phone to ring and hear Misaki's voice on the other side. "We were swept up to the first few rows trying to go after Sakura-chan." She said.

Kagome shared a glance with Takumi who heard the words of their president. Their eyes scanning over the sea of people as a sweat drop went down their face. They were never gonna cross that.

"Seems like they were lining up for the performance, and Sakura-chan doesn't want to move now. I guess we won't be able to meet up with you guys. So, go ahead and enjoy yourselves!" And with that the line went dead.

"Eh? Misaki-san?" Kagome tried to reach her, but it was of no use. "That's odd…" Takumi mused, watching Kagome place her phone back in her pocket. "Kaichou would never willing leave you alone with me."

*Giggle*

His eyes went to the girl next to him. Her sapphire eyes fixated on the spot where her friends might be. "I have an idea as to why, although I'm not sure if I'm ready…"

"Hmn?" Takumi tilted his head in question, confused by her strange remark. She shook her head. "It's nothing."

Then she did something Takumi never expected her to do. Kagome took a bold move and entwined their hands, pulling him with her further in the festival. "Let's enjoy this date!" She smiled brightly, not noticing the blush on Takumi's cheeks.

They went inside the school and toured around the halls until a group of people popped up in front of them.

"We've got an event just right for the both of you! Try our "Love Trail"! Test out the strength of your relationship!" The group led the two inside as they began explaining.

"The rule is simple: Follow the designated course and clear the challenges along the way. You'll be eliminated if you fail even once! If you manage to succeed, the prize is: A super premium ticket to the post-festival event!" They cheered.

"However!" One girl jumped in front of them. "You mustn't let go of your partner's hand during the game."

Kagome's heart skipped a beat.

"Well then, will you be able to overcome the trials ahead together? Dare to take up the challenge?" They asked.

"We'll do it!"

Takumi turned his head to Kagome, his wide eyes staring at her for an answer. However, her eyes remained fixed ahead. "This is my resolve." She told him quietly, before turning her head and giving him a cheeky grin. "Besides don't you want to know if a romance between us is really impossible."

Takumi couldn't help the smirk from coming to his face as they paid the feed and went inside. "Let's face this obstacle together." He said with a smirk as a gently put on the participation necklace on Kagome.

"Un!" She returned with a smile.

"Your Love Trail starts now!"

"We have to clear this within 10 minutes." Takumi said as Kagome placed her hand in his. "So, don't hinder me, Vice."

A saw the thick mark appear on her forehead as he awoken the infamous wrath of Kagome Higurashi.

"WHAT?! For your information you hentai kitsune! I can take care of myself just fine!" Kagome yelled back at him as their legs carried them through the corridor with speed.

Although Takumi enjoyed the atmosphere between them, he did know that he had to awaken Kagome's competitive side in order for her to truly enjoy the event and not to be too conscious of her decisions.

They arrived in record time at the first stop, now being outside in front of a ramen stall. "Please explain the game to us." Takumi and Kagome waited for the girl to speak.

"finish this within 10 minutes." She smiled as she placed a large bowl of ramen noodle soup in front of them. "Only one of you will do the eating. The other couples barely cleared this stage! Good luck!"

Kagome looked at their hands and remembered that they weren't allowed to let go; however, Takumi was currently holding on to her right hand.

"Kago-chan I want you to feed me~" the blonde male suddenly whined. "Don't call me Kago-chan!" She bit back, as she was afraid a customer would recognize her name.

"But… I don't think I can manage with my left hand…" She mumbled, thinking of a way to solve the problem. Suddenly she felt a squeeze, her eyes went to Takumi who gave her a charming smile.

"Don't worry, I will catch every bit you'll feed me." He motioned for the girl to signal the start.

"Ramen, ramen, for your man! The game starts now!"

The onlookers watched as Kagome took the chopstick and grabbed a bit of noodles. Her hands shaking as she tried to get it over to Takumi. However, he moved in closer and took it in his mouth as quick as he could, and slowly their pace began to quicken.

"Oi!" someone called over to their friends. "It's getting crazy over there!"

"You mean Class 3-1's ramen house? That extra-large servings challenge?" one of them guessed.

"Yeah! A couple's duking it out at godly speed!" They went and joined the crowed that had circled the two and watched as the girl raised another portion of noodles with her shaking hand and her partner quickly taking in his mouth, continuing the cycle.

The whispers kept going. "Oi, that couple did something amazing again!"

"The next game was Class 3-2's card game, right?" The other person nodded. "Toran, who was unbeatable in speed games, lost to them at the speed of light! It got even crazier next!"

"3-3's doing table tennis, right? Usually it'll be hard to win using the hand you're not used to." The other commented. "they're no ordinary couple! They're… a superhuman tag team!"

After a while Kagome and Takumi arrived at their final destination. Class 3-4. "Welcome to the balloon quiz."

Somebody came to explain the rules. "First, find a balloon marked with the word "Lucky". Then, burst it, and answer the questions on the paper that's inside it. You have 5 minutes. Start!"

"We're attracting quite a lot of attention…" Kagome stared back at the people that were crowding the door. "We stood out too much, I guess." Takumi shrugged it off and led her to the container filled with balloons.

"Let's race to see who finds the balloon first." Takumi challenged with smirk on his face. After the first confrontation, Kagome got used to his taunts and played along. "Okay. I'll take you on!"

She smiled and turned around already scanning for the certain balloon, unconsciously tugging at his hand to follow. Her eyes lit up as they landed on a pink balloon.

"I found it!" She picked it up and showed it to him. Their eyes met and Kagome could feel his aura speaking to her. But she didn't need it to figure out what he was feeling as his eyes said it all.

A small blush came on her face as she averted her eyes. "Why are you spacing out? There's a time limit, you know."

"Indeed." Takumi smirked, he pulled on her hand bringing their bodies closer. He put the balloon between them and let his other hand snake around her waist. "Let's burst it."

The moment the balloon popped the people of the event surrounded them and handed over the prize. "You've cleared it superbly! Congratulations! This is a special invitation for tonight's post-festival event. Please enjoy it to the end!"

Evening had come and Kagome was exhausted, she was sitting on a ledge waiting for Takumi. Sakura and the others were still stuck at the concert. They still had to be convinced that Kuuga truly changed according to Misaki.

"Sorry for the wait." She looked up and saw Takumi hand her some food as he took a seat beside her. "It was packed with people, so I had to wait."

"Arigatou." She took a bite, enjoying their peaceful break. "Did you complete what you came here to do?" Takumi then asked.

"Misaki-san seems more worried about Kuuga-kun than I am so I'm leaving it to her." She replied, taking another bite of her street food.

"Well, since we're done already, shall we head back?" He proposed getting back on his feet. He watched confused but amused as Kagome swallowed her last bite with a cough, trying desperately to spit out words.

"M-Matte! Since we're here already…" He fingers gripped around the hem of his shirt, stopping him in his tracks. Her cheeks red and her eyes brighter than ever. "I wanna stay til' the end… are you still free?"

He eyed her for a bit before giving her a sweet smile, his hand landing on her head for gentle pats. "We cleared the trial and got his special invitations; we might as well enjoy it."

Once again, they went inside the school building into the classroom where the Love Trial was.

Within a second they were snatched away and dressed up. Kagome stared in the mirror at the light pink dress that was on her body. "So, this is what they meant by special service…" She muttered to her reflection.

"You look perfect in that!" One of the girls complimented. "Your blue eyes stand out much more this way!"

"Create your own special memories in this special uniform on this special night! Please enjoy yourself!" The other one send her out. "Romeo's waiting for you!"

The door opened and Kagome stood face to face with Takumi, dressed in the same theme but with his color was a light green. "You look good, Juliet." He smirked as he walked up to.

She smiled at the compliment. "Arigatou, Romeo." They began wandering the halls, looking outside at the night sky while the students began packing and prepared the bonfire.

"I heard they're going to have fireworks in this event." Kagome said while her kind eyes watched over the people outside. "Since we're here already, let's watch that." Takumi walked ahead.

He led her to an empty classroom and went inside. "Good, this place seems to have the best view of the fireworks."

Kagome blue eyes darted around. "Is it fine to enter just like this?" She questioned, waling up to Takumi who was already leaning on the tables by the window.

"It's fine as long as we don't mess it up." He said, his eyes went to her noticing her fidgeting. "What's wrong… Kagome?"

"N-Nothing's w-wrong!" She stammered. He gave a light huff. "Is it? Fine then. Let's change places. Watching it from the campfire site might be better."

Kagome mustered up the courage before he could stand up. "Are you enduring this…?" She questioned. "Enduring thing just for me…?"

The room fell quiet. "Why do you think so?" Takumi stood up, his figure hovering over Kagome's small height. "I… just felt that way…" Kagome muttered back, staggering backwards against one of the tables.

"Ehh…" He mused with a smirk as he placed his hands on either side of her, trapping her once again. "So, you knew about it. How cruel of you, Kagome. Do you want me to say it out?"

He pushed on, watching her cheeks grow redder and redder by each and every word he spoke. "I'll tell you if you answer my question. Why are you bothered by me?"

"I… I…" Kagome tried to speak but the words seemed to be stuck in her throat. Takumi closed his eyes. "Do you know? You always avoid questions like this."

"W-What are you saying?!" Kagome retorted, their eyes clashing in a fierce battle. "Why are you blushing so hard right now? Are you nervous?" His questions seemed never-ending.

"Are you enduring as well?"

Kagome fell quiet, her eyes back at the ground. Takumi stood back up placed a comforting hand on top of her head, hoping to ease the pressure he put on her. "Gomen, I crossed the line."

He tried to leave, but much like earlier that day, she didn't let him.

"I am." Her voice was shaky but strong at the same time. "I've been enduring! There is so much I still haven't told you. Yet you remain persistence! Always in my head, always running after me… Can't you leave me alone?!"

"You were on my mind for so long I moved on from my past and decided to face the future!" Tears began streaming down her face as she pushed her body closer to his.

"I love you, you idiot fox."

Takumi's eyes went wide, it felt like his legs would give out any second, so he fell back on a table, leaning against him with Kagome clutched against his chest.

She could feel his heartbeat go faster at her confession. His low voice whispered in her ear as he held her tighter.

"Your sudden smiles always surprise me. They're interesting, but dangerous enough to make my heart race." He admitted. "I have been enduring a lot of things, and I can't phrase it short."

"Even now," His hand went up to her cheek, making Kagome looked up. Takumi whipped away one of the remaining tears with his thump as he inched closer.

"I'm head over heels for you."

Their lips met in a tender kiss, something that the both of them didn't know they missed. They could hear the fireworks in the background as their lips continued to be locked to each other. Not wanting to let go of the others warmth.

After a bit they pulled back from each other, letting their mutual love dawn upon them. "Takumi," Kagome began. "I'm ready to tell you everything." Her eyes were unwavering, and he knew that this was probably the only chance she would give him to listen.

He gave her a nod and she responded with a smile.

"It all started on my fifteenth birthday…"
