I'm either going to look like the laughing stock or there are going to be a lot of head turning around.
That was the only thought going through Naruto's mind as she slipped into the red dress that Nejire swore looked good on her. It was nearly time for the Gala, maybe only forty minutes before she needed to meet the rest of her friends in the floor over the Gala's venue. Forty more minutes before her friends were going to see her in a dress and wearing make-up.
Knock.
Naruto jerked her head away from the mirror and chewed on her bottom lip. Taking a deep breath, the blonde walked over to the door. Who could be coming to her room at this time? She released her teeth from her bottom lip and her hand reached out to knob. She opened the door slightly and peaked her head out of the door.
"S-Shouto!" Naruto blinked and swung the door opened, lips hanging open at the sight of her boyfriend standing in front of the door. Her heart fluttered and the blonde couldn't stop herself from smiling ear to ear at the realization Shouto came to see her. But her smile faded as her eyes took in the expression of her boyfriend.
The usual glint of happiness in Shouto's eyes wasn't there. There was absolute no emotion in his eyes, not even a tiny glimpse of mirth in his eyes. Something is wrong. Her stomach rolled, going up and down like it was in one of those fast boats. Bile rose up but Naruto swallowed it down. Her boyfriend strolled in, shoulders tensed as if he was getting ready for war.
Did something happen to his family? Was his mother okay? His sister? Because that was the only explanation she could come up for his strange behavior.
"Shouto, what's wrong?" Shouto doesn't open his mouth. He didn't even bob his head or make any form of movement to tell her that he heard her question. He only paced back and forth in her small room, mismatch eyes never meeting her own blue eyes. Naruto pressed her lips into a frown.
She walked closer to her boyfriend and reached her hand out to him. A hug will calm him down. Naruto chewed on her bottom lip and wrapped her hand over his arm, ready to pull him in but Shouto shoved her hand away. Blue eyes widened and the uneasy feeling in her stomach grew larger.
Something was definitely up with her boyfriend.
"Shouto, what is wrong?"
Shouto paused and her breath hitched. Her blood rushed behind her ears as the ticks of the clock got louder and louder as each second passed. Minutes passed and still he did not answer the question hanging in the air. The fear faded, replaced with an emotion Naruto knew all too well. An emotion that Hinata-chan used to say bring out her worst traits.
Why the hell is he not answering me? She grinded her teeth together as her eyebrows twitched. Rage alongside irritation swirled inside her, colliding against each other to make an explosion. She balled her hands into a fist, taking deep breaths to reign in her growing temper.
But the more concern she felt, the more she couldn't bottle it up.
"Talk to me, Shouto!" She screamed. Shouto jerked his head at her and the blonde tried to steady her trembling shoulders. She steadied her gaze as her chest raised up and down. "Why are you here if you aren't going to talk to me? I know something is bothering you."
The words hung in the air as Naruto fixated her gaze on him. Sweat dribbled down the side of her cheek as Shouto clenched and unclenched his hands. He took several deep breaths before twisting his whole body towards her. His eyes were just like a blank piece of paper, empty and voided of any emotions.
She hated when his eyes were like this because there were so many things that could be going through his mind. Naruto could never be certain of what was going through his head.
"What is your relationship with Sasuke?" Shouto asked. He pressed his lips right into a thin line and folded his arms against his shoulders as his eyes locked right into her.
Naruto blinked and blinked as her mind processed what he finally asked her. Her lips parted slightly as the footsteps from the corridor behind her door echoed throughout the room. What is your relationship with Sasuke? She knitted her eyebrows together into one line, wrinkles forming on her forehead.
"Why are you asking me this?" She asked, frowning and putting her hands on her hips. "I told you, didn't I? Sasuke is my best-friend!"
Shouto stared at her with his eyebrow raised at those words, not looking one bit convinced by her words. The blonde grinded her teeth together. A month ago, he would believe me! Now it looks like he doesn't believe me! She inhaled and exhaled as so many emotions swirled inside of her. Hurt. Anger. Sadness. Those were the only emotions she could identify now.
"Was he only a best-friend?" Accusation colored his tone as Shouto took a step forward, mismatch eyes locked onto her.
"Do you think I'm a liar now?" She asked, raising her voice. The words echoed in the room, so loud that even Jiraiya could hear from the next room. Her eyes burned but Naruto blinked away any tears that threatened to consume her. Out of everyone she knew, Shouto was the last person she expected to act like this. "Because I told you before! Sasuke is my best friend!"
"Is he?" His tone was so cold that it made Naruto shiver. Those mismatch eyes shone with so much mistrust that it made the blonde bristled. "You don't talk about him like he was your best friend! You talked about him like you are in love with him! Are you trying to replace him with me?"
Blue eyes darkened at those words and the blonde raised her hand, reaching out to smack his cheek but Naruto stopped herself. I can't hurt him. No matter how angry he made her with those accusation, she was not going to lose control of herself. He was the last person she wanted to hurt. But those words were like knives, stabbing her straight in the heart.
Why the hell would she try to replace Sasuke with Shouto?
Her jaws twitched as her eyes continued to burn from the waterfall of tears threatening to overflow from her eyes. Uchiha Sasuke. Black childish eyes flashed before her eyes. You can't get yourself out, can you idiot? He had been so irritating at the time but he never forgot her, always teasing her. Why does everyone act like he such a big deal, Hinata-chan? Sasuke has a big brother complex. Jealously over a friend's achievement did not mean she loved him in that way.
She had always been jealous of Sasuke and the way people worshipped him. Liking Sasuke in that way meant she should be proud of his achievements, not sulking like a big baby.
With Shouto, it had always been different. Whenever he got a great score during the exams, she always smiled and teased him for being a smarty pants. Not that he was being one right now. She never told Sasuke about the abuse she went through in the orphanage, never fully trusting him with it, but she did it with Shouto. With Sasuke, she never had the urge to kiss him or hug him in that way.
Sasuke never made her want to be gentle but Shouto made her want to be a gentle person.
"You and Sasuke are two different people!" Naruto finally yelled, raising her hands up in the air. "How the hell can I be in love with him? I spent most of my life trying to compete with him! What I feel towards him is way different from you!"
"How the fuck am I supposed to know that?" Shouto raised his tone and his jaws clenched together. "One of your friends told me that you and Sasuke were in a relationship!"
"My friends? Anyone who knows me will know for a damn fact I have never been in love with him! I like you! Not Sasuke!" She smashed her fist against the wall as her heart raced against her chest. The room trembled with the bed jumping up alongside her suitcase. Shouto stared at her with mismatch eyes shining with uncertainty. "Now tell me the name of the asshole who made you believe this bullshit! How can you believe some stranger over me?"
"Naruto…"
"Don't Naruto me!" She snarled, baring her teeth at him. Shouto stared at her, mismatch eyes fixated on her heaving chest before raising up to her darken blue eyes. "If I was in love with Sasuke then I would have told you! Made it clear to the whole world because I wear my heart on my sleeve!"
"Look Naruto I am—"
"Shut it!" Naruto grinded her teeth together. "If you can believe some stranger so easily then get the hell out of my room! I don't want to see you!"
Shouto froze. He clenched his jaws and nodded stiffly before strolling straight towards her door. Not once did he turn to look at her, only swinging the door open and leaving her alone in the room. Once the door was finally shut, the blonde allowed her legs to fall down on the ground.
Tears streamed down her eyes as her heart ached. Why the hell was she reacting like this? Why did she want to call him back even though he was acting like such a huge ass? She dug her fingers against her hands, trying to stop herself from crying a river of tears. There was no way she would allow these tears to come out. She was stronger than this.
Even if she wanted him to come back, Naruto was never going to spill those words to him.
Uzumaki Naruto was a strong girl or so Naruto chanted to herself as she rocked herself back and forth.
He must have gotten into a huge argument with Naruto.
Jiraiya rubbed his chin, dark eyes fixated on Todoroki. The mismatch boy did not greet him when he entered the elevator, only flickering his eyes at him before looking straight at the door. Even though the kid had no emotions on his face, Jiraiya could tell from the hunched shoulders and the slight flicker of regret in his eyes that something must have happened between them.
The Toad Sannin looked up at the ceiling, uncertain of what to do now. Should he get involved with what must be a lovers spat? But it would be wrong if he did not try and fix whatever argument they had. Damn it, Minato influenced him more than he would like to think. A sigh escaped from his lips and the mismatch boy turned to look at him.
"You got into a huge fight with Naruto, didn't you?"
The creaking of the elevator rang against his ears as he fixated his eyes on Todoroki. Those mismatch eyes widened, looking as large as a tennis ball. I hit the nail, didn't I? He shook his head. It was barely a week into their relationship and already those two were fighting over something. Just the knowledge of this, made him hunch his shoulders.
Todoroki cleared his throat. "We didn't have a fight."
The elevator halted. The doors opened to reveal the empty corridor and Jiraiya stared at the opened doors for a couple of seconds, waiting for someone to come. After a couple of seconds, he jabbed his finger against the button and the elevator closed again. There must have been some kids that decided to press the button before their parents came.
"Do you think I was born yesterday?" He finally asked, turning his head around to look at the boy. "I know when a couple gets into a huge fight."
"Jiraiya-sensei, I don't understand why Kushina got upset with me when I helped some poor girl from the floor!"
His heart ached as a pair of confused blue eyes flashed before his eyes. The kid never realized when someone was flirting with him. He took several deep breaths, trying to calm down the flood of emotions that threatened to overwhelm him. He could feel the whole world turning as more memories threatened to come out. He took in another deep breath.
"How did you know we are dating?" Shouto pressed his lips into a frown. Snorting, Jiraiya pushed himself away from the wall of the lift and walked closer to the kid. He leaned his body forward, kneeling down slightly before fixating his eyes on the kid that managed to make his goddaughter act like a girl.
Jiraiya quirked his lips into a smile. "You can say I can sense when someone is dating."
Todoroki nodded and rubbed the back of his neck. He darted his eyes everywhere from the roof of the elevator to the walls behind them. Jiraiya only stared at him. Out of all the people he expected Naruto to date, this kid was probably one of the last people he expected her to date. The boy was just too quiet compared to his goddaughter.
The thought made him chuckle.
"I accused her of being in love with Sasuke." Todoroki's voice was so quiet that Jiraiya had to stain his ears to hear it. Black eyes widened and he focused his attention on the boy's eyes. Those mismatch eyes shone with so much regret that it made the Toad Sannin want to squirm. "And Naruto was furious with me for even accusing her of that. I told her that she was trying to replace Sasuke with me."
It always come back to Mikoto's boy. Jiraiya sighed, stroking his chin, and stared up at the ceiling. The ceiling just stood still as he considered about what to do next. Relationships had never really been his thing. Other than Tsunade, there had never been a woman that really caught his attention and made him want to date her. He sighed.
"You and Sasuke are two different people." He looked away from the ceiling and stared at Todoroki. "If Naruto was really trying to replace Sasuke with you then she would have tried to compare the two of you."
"But she never really talks about him either." Todoroki commented. "If I ask her about him then she would just change the topic."
Jiraiya sighed and looked at the elevator. Taking a deep breath, he pressed the stop button on the elevator and folded his arms against his chest as the elevator came to a stop. He doesn't know how long the elevator would stop but it should be enough time for him to talk about the issue at hand. Another sigh escaped from his lips.
It really did feel like the past was repeating itself with those two.
"Even for me, Sasuke is a topic that I never try to bring up with her." Jiraiya admitted. He took in a deep breath, ribs stretching to the point that the crack of his ribcage echoed throughout the small elevator. He flickered his eyes to Todoroki, who only blinked. "She always shut down whenever someone brings him up and she always seemed to get upset at the mention of his name."
It was easy for how anyone could mistake her friendship with Sasuke as them being a couple.
"Then you can see why I have my doubts, don't you?" Todoroki closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Gaara told me Sasuke was in love with Naruto so it was only fair…"
"Look I would never deny the fact Sasuke had feelings for Naruto," The mismatch boy blinked and Jiraiya gazed down at the shorter male. "But Naruto never returned his feelings."
Todoroki pressed his lips into a thin line and raised an eyebrow at him. Jiraiya cleared his throat. What else could he explain to the kid? Drawing diagrams or even talking about it was probably not going to be enough to explain the difference between them. But what else could he do? This was not an easy topic to talk about.
"Then how do you see her feelings towards Sasuke?" The boy clenched and unclenched his hands before looking up at him. Only curiosity lit his features. In that moment, the kid really did look like some kind of Prince with that hair and those gentle features. Probably got from his mother because Jiraiya had seen Endeavour on television and that man was rough.
"She loves Sasuke like he was her brother," Jiraiya flickered his eyes to the door. "Sure their arguments were like an old-married couple but she was always taunting him. She always wanted to overtake him, to prove to everyone she could be better than him. If she ever talks about him differently than it is because of that. But she likes you differently from Sasuke."
Todoroki blinked and jerked his head, looking almost uncertain about whether he was being truthful behind his words or not. Why would he lie? With Sasuke, Naruto would scowl and complain about his actions. But with Todoroki, she was always humming and smiling like a little girl that couldn't wait to be near him.
He took another deep breath and stared at him. "Why do you have doubts when it comes to Naruto's feelings towards you? Why can't you be confident in her feelings towards you?"
The mismatch boy regarded him with eyes filled with uncertainty. What was there to be uncertain about? The relationship between Todoroki and Naruto was between them but he was willing to listen to them. Maybe give him some advice because Jiraiya doubt he could find someone that looked at his goddaughter like this kid did.
"I can't help but wonder why me?" Todoroki whispered, looking down at his feet. "There are a lot of guys better than me but she chose me."
Jiraiya regarded the young teen. "Maybe you believe Naruto deserves better but have you ever thought about what she thinks? She likes you because of who you are. You could probably do something terrible and Naruto will still choose you. Is it that hard for you to believe she chose you over someone else?"
Todoroki only kept quiet.
"If you really care about your relationship with Naruto then you are going to go see her and apologize for your stupidity," Todoroki blinked and Jiraiya looked up at the ceiling. "You need to learn how to communicate your doubts to her because your relationship is going to crash and burn if you don't talk to her soon."
Minato would have killed him for encouraging the kid to fix his relationship with Naruto, but Jiraiya liked the relationship between Naruto and Todoroki.
It was probably one of the healthiest relationships Naruto had.
I'm going to have fun today even if Todoroki Shouto is an absolute and utter ass.
Naruto grinded her teeth together and forced a smile on her lips as she marched through the empty corridor leading to the entrance of the meeting point agreed upon her and her friends. A part of her just wanted to hurl her fist against the wall. Even though it had been over thirty minutes after their argument, she could feel the flames of anger ready to rage against anyone that came on her path.
"Naruto!"
Speak of the devil and he would come. She dug her fingers against the palm of her hands as Todoroki's voice rang throughout the corridor. Maybe if she continued walking faster than he would get the message that she had no desire to talk to him. If he opened his mouth, Naruto might actually punch him in the face.
"Naruto, can we talk!"
She rolled her eyes. "Nope."
"Please!"
Even if he was going to pout and apologize, Naruto still did not want to hear what he had to say. What the hell did she do to make him doubt her feelings? She always hugged him. She cuddled with him whenever she knew she could get away with it. But it was not good enough for him. The asshole was damn lucky she wasn't going to turn around and scream at him for hurting her like this.
She was never going to give him that satisfaction.
"I'm sorry!" He yelled. "I know I fucked things up."
Naruto hunched her shoulders and stopped in her steps. A part of her knew she should just continue walking, pretending she never heard him, but his voice was filled with so many emotions. Regret colored his tone alongside with sadness and fear. It would be pathetic of her to listen to whatever excuse he had to give her. She took a deep breath and turned around.
Mismatch eyes shone with so many emotions and Naruto just stared at him with her lips pressed into a thin line. Their various kisses flashed through her eyes. You don't have to pretend that you are fine. She clenched her jaws. Even if you carry a monster, you are still Uzumaki Naruto and you are my friend. Damn it. These memories made it hard for her to turn away from him.
She could never act indifferent to him, not with these memories.
"I'm giving you only ten minutes to explain yourself." She kept her voice steady and cold as possible. Naruto kept her eyes fixated on the younger boy and folded her arms against her chest. After these ten minutes, she was going to decide whether this relationship could work or not.
No matter how she felt towards Shouto, Naruto was not going to put herself through a relationship where she constantly had to prove her feelings to them. It just was not worth it.
"I believed him because he said that you and Sasuke were in love with each other." Naruto clenched her jaws together and flickered her eyes to the watch in Shouto's hands. Maybe ten minutes was just too long. She should have given him ten seconds, then she could walk away without any regrets. "And I couldn't help but think it was true because you never really talk about Sasuke."
Because she didn't want to be sad around Shouto. She knew Shouto. If he knew what Sasuke did to her, he would call her insane for even considering Sasuke a friend. He had been so upset with what happened in USJ and those shinobi. She could only imagine the rage he would have if he knew what Sasuke did to her.
"That doesn't mean I was in love with the Bastard!" She grinded her teeth together. "Have you ever thought I wasn't ready to talk about Sasuke? That maybe I still need time to talk about that idiot!"
Shouto rubbed the back of his neck. "I did but I also couldn't help but wonder if it was true. Sasuke and you are childhood friends so it made sense if you guys had that kind of relationship! I mean why else would you pick me? I'm messed up."
"And so am I! But what does that have to do with anything!" Naruto took several deep breaths and clenched her jaws together. "But just because Sasuke and me are childhood friends, doesn't mean I'm ready to make out with him or go on dates with him! I never wanted to be gentle with him! But I always felt that way with you! Why do you doubt me?"
What was she doing wrong?
"I just can't help it," Shouto admitted, taking another step forward. His mismatch eyes looked at her with uncertainty as if he didn't know whether he was allowed to get closer to her or not. She didn't know either. A part of her still felt the embers of anger but another part of her wanted him close to her.
Finally, he was only a few meters in front of her and Shouto looked down at her. His hand reached out to her hair and Naruto allowed herself to close her eyes. "Why can't you help it? Didn't I always make it clear to you I like only you?"
"You are amazing," Naruto blinked and jerked her head up at the mismatch boy. Shouto took another deep breath, dropping his hands on top of her shoulders. "And so strong that I can't help but wonder that maybe you could do better than me. That maybe you deserve to be with a shinobi. Sometimes I think you are going to wake up and realize you can do better than me."
She slumped her shoulders and took a deep breath. The rage inside of her was fading away at those words, only fading into an emotion Naruto could push to the side. When he put it in that way, she could see his point. But it was still no excuse. It was not like he was the only one with doubts.
"I have doubts about us too," Shouto frowned and Naruto chewed on her bottom lip. "Do you know how many times I have seen all those girls looking at you with hearts in their eyes? Or how they look at me like I'm not pretty enough to be with you? I see it every day when we go out together and I wonder why you liked me over some girl who looks like a doll."
Shouto opened his mouth to say something but whatever her boyfriend had to say could wait. Right now, Naruto could hear loud footsteps approaching them and the last thing she wanted was for their conversation to be overheard. She wanted to fix this, not have it air out to the whole world.
"We are going to talk about this tomorrow," Naruto informed him softly. "Right now I just need more time to cool down. Tomorrow, we will discuss about what happened today and you will tell me the name of the asshole or bitch who claims to know my relationship with Sasuke."
She was going to kill the asshole that made Shouto question their relationship.
A/N: Please review and tell me what you think about this chapter. What do you think of Naruto's reaction ? Do you think she was in the right to be angry with him? And of the interaction between Jiraiya and Todoroki? What do you think of the differences between the original Nirvana and the Guardian Chronicles?
- Please continue to tell me if you prefer to see the original Nirvana to be completed.
