Chapter 17 – Tune
Whimsical notes swayed through sterile air as its occupants studiously observed their educator. The rigidity of each trainee contrasted the melodic hum emanating from the focus of their attention. So raptly ensconced, it was unsurprisingly surprising that the sudden buzz of a small object jolted the students.
As everyone froze, and seconds passed, the attending finally spoke. "Well? Is anyone going to answer my pager?"
Immediately, one of the three stupefied onlookers reached for the small device on the side table and began reading the message. "Dr. Miyatsu needs a consult on some CT scans in trauma." Bolstered by his role in being the first of his peers to act and answer, he looked proudly up at his mentor.
"Smith, what do you see here?"
The young resident glance curious eyes toward the patient currently on the operating table. "A brain tumour?"
"No, Smith." Dr. Onigumo sighed. "What you see, is that I am in the middle of performing brain surgery."
The others snickered discreetly as the reprimanded's proud demeanour shrunk to nothingness. Pitiful, this whole lot of them. How was it that he ended up with brainless prospects in such a specialty? How ironic.
Ruby eyes reconcentrated on the task at hand, continuing the removal of the so-called tumour. "They can bring the scans here for consult."
Minutes passed as the melodic hum continued. It wasn't long before before the door swung open and another intern stood breathlessly, gripping several x-ray sheets. Exercise, my dear.
A singular evaluation had Dr. Onigumo commanding the new arrival. "Page the on-call neuro and prep an OR for a craniotomy."
"Um… Dr. Stevenson is on vacation, I don't think-"
"Not him." He countered irritably. "The back-up on-call."
At the lack of recognition in the paltry intern's confusion, the surgeon finally snapped. "Dr. Taisho!"
