How did I even manage to stay cool after finally seeing the four of them there?!
That was the biggest milestone.
After starting this journey with the Pale Rider and having visions about the others, all I could think of was finally getting face to face. I just didn't think I was going to be afraid of them by the moment their eyes stared at me. Maybe it wasn't fear, but... Their presence was so, I dont know, big and imposing. They were powerful, even more that I could imagine as they all got better after their lone journeys. I knew they wouldn't hurt me, but still... Chills.
It was nice seeing them, though.
As I didn't know where to go or what would happen next, I was feeling lost. Outside, in the entrance of that hideout, it was a beautiful view of the world in front of me and it made me feel homesick. Back in the day, where would this be? How far would I be from home? Sighing, I could only notice, in a building not too far, some demons lurking around, provoking themselves as they had nothing to do. But what they would have to do in a shattered world like this? Torn buildings, vegetation taking place over the concrete and cement, being the long lasting proof that this place was one day inhabited by us, humans, and that took just a little less than a hundred years to break everything down.
Would we ever be able to inhabit this world again?
But waking up from my daydream actually made me think of why I was there.
Everything was solved! War was free and Death resurrected mankind. That meant my brothers were alive! I couldn't wait to see them, but didn't know where they were and thought that maybe they did, so I ran – tried, actually. No one can run after having a leg replaced – to them, preparing to leave, and hated to interrupt, but it was a piece of information I was so eager to have that nothing would stop me.
Their eyes fell on me when I was near enough, sighing, trying to recompose myself "Hello again..."
"How can we help?" War was the one to say it.
"Uh, first of all, I'm Maya. I couldn't say before, but it's so nice to see you together now and I think I can consider myself a fan and..." i just forgot that they didn't show lots of emotions, so their faces were pure ice "Well, never mind, so. Humanity is alive again right?" they nodded "Were they put back where they were when they died, or are they anywhere else?"
"No one unprepared like the humans can come back to this shattered place" Strife answered "Not for now, at least. They are secure, be certain of that. Why would you ask?"
I just sighed, trying not to sound sad "Well, some humans survived the End War and some didn't. As they are secure in one place, I need to go where they are and try to find my brothers..." Lowered my head, looking at the collar that was now tangled on my wrist. Better location, if I might say. "Could one of you take me there?'
"There is no need to" Fury said and started walking "Come" and I just followed her to the centre of the tree, where a pool, the same one I saw back when death confronted the Archon, was built "This is a reflecting pool. It was used to take the human survivors to a safe place before the demons attacked here. Step over it and think the same, it will lead you to where your brothers are"
My eyes brightened up and the big smile appeared in my face. Geez! I was finally going to see them! "Thank you so much!" I could've hugged her, but I contained myself and was about to step over the pool when something hit me "Uh, so... I told you I can see the future, right...? But by now you already know that... The Council was behind everything"
"We know"
I looked at Death "I... didn't tell this before because I was afraid it could draw your focus from what you were doing... Sorry..."
"Do not apologize. You just tried to help" he said "Now go. We have work to do"
I stepped over the pool and thought about the place my brothers were in. But before it could get me there, I looked at them, already with their backs to me "By the way, you're going to win" I could see them turning and looking at me, but the pool did its job and soon I wasn't there anymore.
So this is how reflecting pools work and that's how Death went to Earth back in Lostlight.
By the time I could see again and had my feet steady in the ground again, a giant mace was right in my neck, everyone around froze in place, and so was I "Hey! What you're doing?!"
"what are YOU doing here?!" he asked, his grip really tight on his weapon. He, was a Maker
Before I could say anything, Ulthane came to my rescue "You came, little one" He asked his friend to lower the weapon "She is the last human. She was with one of the Horsemen" And the guy seemed to relax "What ye doing here? Thought you would stay with ye horseman"
"First, he is not my anything. Second, all the humans are here, and I need to find my brothers" i looked around "By the way, how can this place shelter all of the mankind? It must be huge"
"It is, but as ye said, organised as it is, all of the human race is here, so ye may have troubles finding them"
He then started to explain how everything there was organized.
Pretty much like Earth itself, he said it was better for people with the same language to stay together. Then, certain areas were designed for each as well as a group of Makers for what they would need from now on. After, they picked those which could speak more than one language to help them communicate, but as, again, the entire human race was there, it is as if I had to travel all the countries on Earth to find my brothers, and that would not be easy.
My brothers and I always learned foreign languages. I myself knew more than I could count. Connecting it to the recent discovery of my heritage, that might be why, but my brothers could speak some more as well, so I just had to discover in which community they were in.
Easy peasy.
Ulthane just warned me, though, that my discovery was not only mine and the Horsemen's. Practically all the Makers knew it as well, so it would be nice if I stayed out of mess and everything would be fine "This is a human outpost, anyway. And that's what ye are"
"well, thank you, Ulthane" I sighed "I will start looking for them"
"each community have training schedule now, if ye want to improve those moves of yers"
"That is something I would like" I giggled "Thanks."
It took me several days to find them, but even though I was so happy about finding them, i couldn't stop thinking about the four. Where were they and what were they doing? I knew they wanted to confront the Council, and that they would eventually win, but i didn't know when they would go.
I came back to my senses when approached another community, maybe the tenth one in that day, and the man on the entrance asked my name. Every other one I visited was like that, and I liked, really, because it kept everything organized. Saying that I was not from that one and I was just looking for my brothers, he picked up tons of paper to check for the names.
The end of the world sucks because of that.
Paper files only made us waste our time, and yet I had to wait patiently while he was searching name and surname. Thankfully, it was all sorted in alphabetical order, so it was a little bit better.
"Look, they are not from this community, but they are here today" he confirmed "I will grant you passage for the day" and gave me a little note that said I could get in
First step, finding where they were, complete. Second, finding them.
I laughed nervously as it was a huge place to search, but I would search. We looked like each other, so I just had to ask "have you seen two men that look like me?" and bingo. I'd find them.
I didn't know how things were working there, but as the day passed by I started to feel the craziest hunger ever. Only then I realized how I missed a proper meal. Since Death doesn't have the need to eat, I had to find things to eat by myself. As mostly of our journey was in the Kingdom of the Dead, it was kinda hard to find meat anywhere among skeletons and poisonous things around, and worrying about finding my brothers the past few days made me forget I had to eat like a normal person.
Trying to find anywhere to eat, a delicious smell filled my nose and I just followed it, finding a small fire and a camp around it. I approached them, asked if they had seen my brothers and with a negative response, I asked if I could sit and eat with them "I'm the last human to arrive here. I'm starving" yeah, sure. I was saying that for all the communities, but they allowed me to eat and it was the most delicious thing I had. Or was I just hungry? Anyways, I loved it.
While eating and talking, one of the guys around asked me to go with him a little bit far from the others, as if he was about to say something forbidden "The ones you're looking for. Your brothers, right?"
"Yeah, do you happen to know where they are?'
"Just follow me" And I just did that.
He was leading me to one camp a bit far from the others, just a faint spark of a fire outside, but the bright light inside one of the cabins. He knocked some times, waited for an answer and then opened it. He exchanged some words and turned to me saying I could get inside.
Even though they were with their backs to the door, my eyes filled with water and the tears started rolling down. I would recognize them even in the dark. It was really them. They were really there and I wasn't dreaming. "Guys...'
They immediately turned to me. Exactly how I reminded.
Alex, the older brother, taller and with this wiser looking face, had his lips turned into a big smile while seeing me. Jason, my second brother, could not contain the happiness in his face by seeing me. They looked different, and I was sure I looked different as well, even though we had similar facial features, the past events changed us.
But no, that was not the time to think about that.
It was so, but so amazing to be seeing them again that I seemed that time had stopped. I could just stand there, staring at them, for the rest of my life. It was so good to know that they were safe and sound.
They ran to me, hugging me at the same moment ,and I could feel they wanted to cry. "Little sis..." they really were holding back tears "We thought you...'
I shushed them with my fingers "Stop it. I'm here!" I smiled and hugged them once more "I'm so happy you're safe! Are you hurt? Any of you?"
"We are completely fine" they looked at me, and I could just smile "Where were you?!" they asked and I sighed.
"Its a long story"
"we have time"
I smiled again. My heart was filled and I was whole again.
