Chapter 18 – Familiar

Amber orbs expertly scanned black and white films monotonously.

They were not late, per se. He was just fast.

The thrum of oxygenating vents echoed in the stillness of the operating room, radiating a sense of calm – or dread – differentiated by the observer. Scrub nurses stood aside as the anesthesiologist checked and rechecked airflow settings, each flick of a switch reverberating across the chamber. Surgical techs methodically arranged polished tools upon easy-access trays, while the radiographer ensured working functionality of various monitors. His observance flickered to each occupant. All were stationed, and for a split second, he was reminded of a time where this would have been completely unacceptable.

They are ill-prepared. He once commanded perfection, and all incessant fidgeting would have been dealt with swiftly. But now was not the time.

Before long, scrambling footsteps landed heavily as the doors suddenly flung open. "Make way," called the dark-haired man while carting in the surgical bed.

Finally. An imperceptible tick of his jaw was the only indication of his impatience. As nurses started prepping the unconscious body, a faint familiarity piqued his subtle interest. That scent…

Ignoring the metallic stench of saturated blood, nostrils flared delicately, filtering through each aromatic undertone. The sterile environment diluted naturally keen senses, and he was finding difficulty recalling where, or when, the scent imprinted upon him. With gauze obscuring too much of the girl's face for recognition, he filed the thought for later consideration.

The man finally regarded his silent colleague, dropping his hand away from adjusting IV lines. "I thought Naraku was scrubbing in."

"He is in surgery," came the impassive response. "I was called in."

"Huh, I thought The Great Dr. Sesshomaru Taisho was retired. Didn't know you were still on call," the man quipped.

"Dr. Miyatsu."

The man smiled sheepishly.

"Leave."
