Summary: War ensues when two college suckers fight over the last left-handed desk.

Nothing pissed Weiss off more than a person who was right hand dominant sitting on a left-handed desk. The desk was purposely designed for left-handed people. A left hander! Even if the university budgeted by packing each and every class to the maximum occupancy, a right handed student would find those types of seat too awkward for note taking.

However, coming to class with those naive thoughts turned out to be mistake number one. It was the first day of class, and Weiss had easily lost count of how many students occupied the left-handed desk.

She understood the unwritten rules of 'first come, first served', but she couldn't control the frustration overboiling in her stomach. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she heard her own voice nagging for not arriving early enough.

Her mind would say:

Why didn't you spare five minutes of your time? You could've had a seat by now!

Or:

You should've pushed your way through the crowd in the first place rather than wait.

Her thought even stooped low to a last resort:

Bribe impoverished students crippled with debt to give up their seats, or even better, to drop the class entirely.

Weiss grimaced at the last thought. The idea seemed vaguely familiar to what her father would've done, and quite frankly, it really annoyed her. Luckily, she was saved from her own nagging consciousness when she spotted a vacant seat specifically for left-handed students.

She hurried along with her backpack in tow as majority of the students were ready for the first day of lecture.

Behind her, a rapid pattering of footsteps broke through the murmuring sound of several hundred voices. Weiss glanced over her shoulder to get a glimpse of what kind of bumbling dolt was stampeding down the steps like a herd of rampant zoo animals.

And right there, her and the bumbling dolt made eye contact at first glance.

"I called dibs!" The girl then had the audacity to spear a finger in her direction and pointed at the last vacant seat — her seat that she was planning to take.

Weiss narrowed her eyes. "Oh hell no."

They looked like complete fools competing for the last empty seat. Amongst the entire class, only a small section watched how idiotic they looked.

The bumbling dolt lunged for it, but Weiss refused to back down. If she was going to tarnish her reputation in the most inappropriate way, then she better get a victory out of it.

She high-key really wanted that seat.

Weiss shot out her hand in interference. There were no punches involved, but her hand only served as a mere hindrance. Her foul play bought her enough time to squeeze through the tight space first, beating the other girl to it.

"Oh come on!" The girl threw her hands up, fingers curled in frustration.

To add salt onto her wound, Weiss smugly rubbed a victorious smile and proceeded to flip her hair when she graciously sat down into her throne. She expected to get strangled to death on the spot, but instead the bumbling dolt carded through her own hair.

"That's not fair," she said while giving Weiss the stink eye. "I bet you're not even left handed!"

Weiss rolled her eyes back at the girl's immature tantrum. They were causing a scene, but what's new? College was full of unexpected surprises.

"I beg to differ," Weiss said stiffly. She took out a notebook and a pen, and she began to write perfectly with her left hand.

The girl scoffed when she had been proven wrong. Grumbling, she dumped her backpack next to Weiss and plopped onto the stairs in defeat.

If there were fire safety rules concerning about blocking the aisle, then the professor did not make any comments when he introduced himself to the class.

Minutes into the lecture, Weiss lost all concentration when she noticed teeny tiny pencil shavings landing on top of her teeny tiny table. She glowered at the icky, pesky annoyance and wondered where in hell they were coming from. For obvious reasons, Weiss ruled out herself because she was using a pen for god sakes!

Flick!

Weiss heard a shallow sound not too far from her.

Sighing exasperatedly, she sharply turned sideways already having a culprit in mind. And her hunch was right. Lo and behold, the girl who almost stole her desk had been childishly flicking pencil shavings like a sore loser while plastering that damn obnoxious smile on her face.

"Stop it," Weiss hissed at the girl for doing it on purpose.

"You literally shoved me out of the way," the girl quietly hissed back at her.

"I claimed the desk first!"

"But I called dibs first!"

"Don't be such a brat," Weiss whispered harshly. She quickly glanced at the girl's paper and took a couple of seconds to decipher the hieroglyphics poorly written on the top.

Ruby.

Weiss was impressed with herself for reading illegible handwriting worse than a fifth grader.

"You're the one acting like a brat! We could've settled this in a friendly game of rock-paper-scissors."

"I had my eyes set on this desk first."

"Well, I did too!"

The conversation pointlessly went in circles, so Weiss ended it there by ignoring her. Being the bigger person, she didn't let her patience wear down as she endured five minutes of pencil shaving flicks.

Day 2

It didn't surprise Weiss to see the classroom jammed pack again. The semester had only just begun. She expected the attendance rate to go down in another week or so. By the second to third week, she predicted a little less than half the class to show. One bad case of laziness will start to spread like the common cold until skipping class became debatably acceptable.

But skipping class wasn't the only social norm.

The first seat one person sits on the first day of class becomes their spot for the rest of the semester by default.

Clearly, this was an unspoken policy that everyone knew about, and Ruby had the gall to break that rule.

There, sitting in her seat, Ruby smugly flashed a grin.

"Early bird catches the worm," she snickered at Weiss who stood motionless in the aisle with eyes wide.

Weiss unceremoniously dropped her bag onto the floor and quietly sat on the stairs, the same exact spot Ruby had sat yesterday.

To Weiss, this was war.

Day 3

Ruby took an extra step to arrive early to class. It was out of her character to fight over a seat, but the reaction she had gotten yesterday was well worth it. The uncomfortable expression on that girl's face gave her a good laugh, and she decided to do it again.

Ruby strode through the doors with confidence soaring higher than the annual tuition rate. Seat jacking was pretty mean spirited, but that was her seat to begin with.

As Ruby climbed down the stairs, the sweet victory that she had imagine shattered like most students' intangible dreams. Sitting in her seat, she recognized the platinum haired girl already settled down with a pen and a notebook out.

Ruby stood helplessly in the middle of the aisle, silently glowering next to her. On the top corner of the girl's paper, she noticed 'Weiss Schnee' legibly written in black ink.

"Early bird catches the worm." Weiss smirked.

Regardless of the few obvious unoccupied seats in the classroom, Ruby lowered herself to the floor and sat on the stairs once again.

She didn't plan on admitting defeat in this war.

Day 4

Yesterday, Weiss had a field day when she saw the crushing defeat on Ruby's face. She celebrated her victory with ice cream followed by a nice brewed coffee in the next morning.

When she came striding into the lecture hall at the same time as of yesterday, she noticed Ruby had taken a seat on the stairs. The stairs of all places!

The chair they had been fighting for remained unoccupied which was an odd sight to her. But who cares about the little details when it got her the results she wanted — an empty left-handed seat. Weiss smiled victoriously when she walked down to claim her rightful throne.

"Given up already?" Weiss' soft, sweet voice wasn't enough to mask her haughtiness.

Face forward, Ruby nonchalantly shrugged. She didn't bother to give Weiss a proper response or spare her an effortless glance.

"How smart of you to retire now," Weiss said. She fished into her backpack for her writing instrument after taking the seat. "You shouldn't fight a war that you —" When Weiss reached over to unfold her desk from the side of the chair, she realized it was missing. The whole desk was missing...

Ruby burst into laughter at Weiss' dumb expression. She proceeded to pull out a wooden table of what used to be attached to the seat from who knows where, and Weiss connected the two together.

"You unscrewed the desk…"

"Yep." Ruby flaunted the table that was the size of a tablet.

Groaning, Weiss slumped into her seat and uncomfortably took notes on her lap.

Day 5

Ruby still chuckled after yesterday's hi-jinks. Her inappropriate behavior could land her into deep waters if words were to spread, but to see the priceless reaction on Weiss' face was well worth it.

Upon entering the lecture hall, she caught sight of Weiss sitting adjacently to the left-handed desk they battled hard for. Seeing it left untaken made her scratch her head. After what had happened yesterday, she figured Weiss would be on a revenge conquest.

"That's very nice of you to save me a seat," Ruby said cautiously upon arrival, but still with a shit-eating grin.

When Weiss responded with a silent, but snarky smile, Ruby knew something was off.

"Why are you smiling like that?" Ruby eyed her suspiciously. Something in her gut told her that the girl was sinisterly plotting something — probably plotting her death. "It's creepy. Stop it."

Weiss pressed her lips thinly at the insult. "Whatever."

Without taking her eyes off of Weiss, Ruby carefully took her seat — only she fell straight through when there was no seat attached to the chair at all. It was like falling into a trap hole, except she made a huge commotion tumbling down. Every single pair of eyes were on her, and Weiss hid her mouth behind a hand and laughed.

"Arrggh!" Ruby cried out. It happened so fast that she couldn't feel the pain coming through after she fell on her tailbone. "You took out the chair?!"

"Pfft —" Weiss snickered. "Yes. It was only fair after yesterday."

"Karma is such a bitch," Ruby sighed exasperatedly. She remained glued to the floor and only looked back at Weiss when she realized something. "Not gonna help me up are you?"

"You're a big girl now. I'm certain you're capable enough to do it yourself."

"Oh thank you for caring for my well being. Other than a few broken bones, internal bleeding, and a fractured skull, I'm totally capable!"

Weiss rolled her eyes at her theatrics. "You're so extra."

"I'll take that as a compliment." Ruby flashed a smile that lasted for a second. It took her awhile, but she finally got herself off the floor. Now Weiss couldn't look down on her… literally. "How did you manage to take out the chair?"

"The right tools." Weiss pulled a wrench from her backpack and waved it casually.

"Of course… No wonder you didn't occupy the seat. You were plotting for my downfall so you can usurp the throne."

"Mmhm."

With a heavy sigh, Ruby moved back to the stairs and sat down.

Day 6

Weiss had beat her again!

Ruby internally screamed. Instead of sitting on the stairs like a loser, she squeezed into the row behind Weiss. Other seats had opened up as more people started to drop the class after. However, none of that mattered to Ruby. She didn't want just any seat! She wanted that seat!"

Frustrated with today's defeat, Ruby collapsed into the seat behind Weiss. She tried to light the girl's hair on fire with her eyes, but she wasn't Superman. Laser wouldn't magically shoot out.

"How does it feel to be the underdog?" Weiss turned around with that teasing smirk to gloat her victory.

"How cute," Ruby replied dryly. She crook a sarcastic smile but it easily fell down into a hardened frown.

Weiss uttered a sound of annoyance, sharply turning back to face the front of the lecture hall. As time went by, Ruby's mind wandered deep into the realm of nefarious ideas. She tapped the tip of her shoe at the bottom of Weiss' chair. Her eyes flew up to search for any movement coming from Weiss, but the girl didn't seem to notice. So what does Ruby do? She kicked again, but much harder.

Then once more.

And then another.

Then another after that because she was having so much fun.

She finally caught Weiss' attention as the girl flashed her a killer glare before turning to the board. With a coy smile, Ruby kicked the chair again.

Weiss flipped her middle finger without sparing a second glance.

Ruby felt pretty satisfied when she spent a good portion of the class annoying Weiss.

Day 7

No matter how many times Weiss rubbed her eyes, Ruby was sitting in her seat with that cute but extremely irritating smile on her face. She wanted to wipe it off so much.

"How does it feel now, underdog?" Ruby teased, flicking her silver eyes to Weiss.

Weiss glowered.

"Ass or crotch?"

"E-Excuse me...?" Ruby stammered, unsure if she heard Weiss correctly.

"Ass or crotch?" Weiss repeated once more, her voice pronouncing every word as she kept its flat tone.

"Uhh..." Ruby drew blank stares before hesitantly deciding. "Ass?"

Weiss squeezed into the row and gave Ruby her first choice. Ass. Nothing but ass considering a lecture hall of this size never had enough room to let one person walk through normally. So she turned to her side and sidestepped her way into the row.

She was still determined to take the seat the next day, but today, she wasn't in the mood to sit on the stairs.

"Nice ass," Ruby muttered under her breath as she caught an eye full of round goodness in front of her face.

"Thank you."

Day 8

Ruby felt like her eyes were betraying her. The moment the previous class had been dismissed, she rushed into the lecture hall to claim her throne. But somehow, Weiss had beat her to it.

Weiss gave Ruby the famous, snooty, victorious look when she had just arrived.

Catching her breath after clearly rushing in, Ruby questioned her incredulously. "Were you sitting here from the previous class?"

"The subject wasn't interesting at all," Weiss answered kindly.

"Of course you did... And you called me extra." Something inside Ruby made her gave up. There was no way she could top that if Weiss played that way everyday "Ass or crotch?"

Weiss replied with an eye roll.

"Ass or crotch," Ruby repeated once more, not taking silence as an answer.

Weiss squeezed the bridge of her nose. "Crotch."

Just how Weiss had done yesterday, Ruby squeezed into the tight space to get through and gave Weiss her front view. She did it painfully slow as she dragged her feet across the floor.

"Your fly is down."

"W-What —" Flustered, Ruby glanced down to check her zipper. Much to relief, she was glad that it wasn't undone. But Weiss had the audacity to trick her. "You're an asshole. You know what..." Ruby paused midway. She backed out of the row to go back to the aisle. "You deserve an ass instead."

And just like that, Ruby wiggled her way through the narrow space with her ass in front of Weiss' face.

Day 13

The time spent and the dedication required to sit through the previous class to prevent Ruby from taking her seat was well worth it. It showed who was the superior one in this war, and Weiss was winning by a landslide.

With the number of times she had seen Ruby's ass dragging across her desk to get into the row, she had to admit…

Ruby did have a nice ass.

Day 18

Weiss exhaled a heavy sigh. "Please stop."

She always thought of herself as a patient person. From flicking eraser bits to chair kicking, she gave herself a pat on the shoulder for enduring all of Ruby's antics. But right now, she was ready to rip every strand of her hair. She couldn't tolerate compulsive leg shakers. Those types of people irritated her on another level.

"What?" Ruby frowned when she didn't know exactly what she did wrong.

"Your leg." Weiss pointed. "You're literally shaking like a dog that came out of an ice cold bath. I can feel a 7.8 magnitude earthquake coming from you, and you're sending aftershocks down the entire row. I can see people viciously glaring in our direction."

"Oh." Ruby finally stopped when she realized it. "My bad."

Day 23

Fortune smiled upon them as the universe blessed the class with technical difficulties. Yes, technical difficulties — the sweet goodness where the professor stops lecturing for a whole minute because their microphone stopped working.

Weiss dropped her pen onto her teeny tiny desk and let out a relieved sigh. She had been writing without stopping and this was a good break. A writer's callus was starting to grow on her finger to prove a point.

When she decided to relax into her seat, she propped her arm on the arm rest. Except…

"All you have to do is ask if you wanted to hold my hand," Ruby said sweetly, wiggling her eyebrows at Weiss. Their hands had touched when Weiss unknowingly tried to put her arm on top of the arm rest.

"Ugh, you're an insufferable dolt." Weiss groaned. She pulled her arm away and folded them across her chest. She had already claimed the chair. Taking away the armrest as well would be a selfish thing to do.

"It's Ruby," the girl mumbled sheepishly moments later. "A little late on the introduction, but my name is Ruby. Nice to meet you, I guess?"

Smiling, Weiss offered a hand for her to shake — a symbol of peace between the two.

"Weiss, nice to meet you."

Day 32

"Ruby, are you seeing what I'm seeing…"

"I have eyes, so yes. Yes, I do."

"That girl just…"

"Seat jacked you?" Ruby finished in an unenthusiastic tone.

"Us." Weiss hissed. "That girl stole the seat from both of us! How dare she! We have been sitting in that spot for little over a month. After being cured of her laziness disease, she randomly shows up and takes it from us? I cannot stand for this."

"I thought you sat there from the previous lecture to save it…"

"I stopped that a while ago. It was a waste of my time."

"Okay. So, what do we do?"

"I don't know about you but I'm currently plotting her death."

"No, Weiss." Ruby tried to shut down her idea before it can hatch.

"I can envision it. Table and chair missing. Gone. Poof. Just like that. Easy. With a little teamwork, we can make it happen."

"No."

"She'll fall through to her demise like you did and maybe, just maybe — "

"Okaaaay," Ruby cuts her off right there before it gets any darker than necessary. The last thing she wanted was being taken to court and paying for the seat jacker's tuition for purposely plotting her doom. "How about we sit behind her and behave like civilized people. Look there's even a left-handed desk in that row too!"

"It's not the same."

"Don't be picky."

"I want that seat."

"The seat is occupied."

"Like I mentioned before, plotting her death is still an option," Weiss suggested. Another idea struck her, and she lit up with lips spreading into a thoughtful smirk. Ruby didn't like that enthusiastic look on her face. It spelled evil. "Do you think she would leave if we kept kicking her chair?"

Ruby facepalmed at that. She should've known Weiss would say that.

Day 33

Ruby took a small fraction of her day to come to class early.

It was early enough to wait for the previous class to leave, but she didn't mind. Sparing only a few minutes wasn't a big deal to her. After the previous class was dismissed, Ruby didn't see Weiss anywhere upon entering the room. The seat they had fought for in the past remained unoccupied.

Without thinking consciously, her legs moved on their own and led her to the left-handed desk. But rather than taking the seat for herself, she slid her backpack off her shoulder to save that seat and took the one next to it.

"Is this seat taken?" A person came up and asked a couple minutes later after she had sat down.

Ruby glanced up to the stranger and offered an apologetic smile.

"Yup."

The person left in search for a new seat.

"Is this seat taken?" The same question was asked by someone new who just recently came in.

"Yep."

"Is this seat taken?" was asked a third time.

After Ruby's third 'yes', she slipped on earphones so people would be discouraged to talk to her. For the next few minutes of peace, Ruby wandered off in her own world with her earphones plugged in. She stared off into space, waiting for lecture to start, until she felt a tap on her shoulder.

She turned and saw Weiss' lips moving, but she couldn't hear a single thing she had said.

"I'm sorry. What was that?" Ruby took off her earphones.

"Did you save this seat for me?" Weiss repeated again, looking a little touched at the gesture.

"Oh. Yup, this seat is for you. Let me get my backpack out of the way."

"You sure you don't want it?" Weiss asked, watching Ruby take her backpack to the floor.

"Yup."

"Are you sure?" Weiss asked one more time. Ruby didn't know Weiss was capable of making a guilty expression. All she remembered were smirks. This was a pleasant change in pace. "You came here first."

"Don't sweat it," Ruby smiled and patted at her own chair. "This seat is really growing on me anyways."

Day 46

A midterm season storm was brewing.

It was the time of week where students locked themselves in their rooms to study for a test that was worth at least a third of their grade.

On this day specifically, more students attended class for the review session to see if the material presented had any useful information to save their sorry ass from a test they were not prepared for.

Weiss felt lucky that she was able to keep her seat, but with the lecture hall filled up, the seat she had been saving for Ruby needed to be given up. Students, coming and going, had been asking her if the seat was taken. Eventually, she caved in and said no after realizing Ruby had not shown up ten minutes into the lecture.

Thirty minutes into the lecture, Weiss zoned out. Everything coming out of the professor's mouth was review, and Weiss decided to take a cheat day to doze off for once.

She could hear a bunch of 'pssssst!' coming behind her followed by a sound of crumpling paper. She ignored the series of noise thinking they weren't in any way relevant to her.

"Ow!" Some boy hissed. "What was that for?"

"Sorry!" Came the voice of someone familiar. "I meant to throw it at the person in front of you. But I kinda missed… Can you pass the note for me?"

"Why?"

"Dude, come on."

"Didn't you grow out of the note passing in elementary school?"

"Don't be a dick. Pass the paper ball to her."

A tap on the shoulder jolted Weiss from her slouched position. She turned and caught sight of Ruby waving from a couple of rows behind her with a sappy smile on her face.

"Some girl wanted to give this to you," the boy grumbled, offering a crumpled paper ball to Weiss.

Weiss smiled and silently mouthed a thank you to him. Once she faced forward, she unraveled the ball and discovered a string of numbers scribbled in chicken scratch along with a note on the bottom.

Text me. Let's study together.

Best way to end the year is an update.
