Henry requested Anne come to his chambers to talk. Sending the message with George Anne's brother. The pair laughed at the request. Both knowing how their Father and Uncle would jump at the news that the King was seeking out Anne. As they walked down the corridors towards Henry's rooms they were watched by members of the court. Both took no notice of the whispers.
"Your Majesty," Anne curtsied low as she entered the apartment seeing Henry standing by a large fireplace. Henry nodded to George and the others in the room that they were dismissed. George kissed Anne on the forehead, winked at her and left the room back to the Boleyn family chambers. "You wanted to see me?"
"My dear Anne," Henry rushed to her lifting her up into his arms kissing her passionately. "Are you enjoying being back at court?" He asked.
"Very much so," she giggled.
"Catherine is not overtaxing you?" Henry joked.
"No," She shook her head. "I am worried about her."
"Worried my love?"
"Yes, her Majesty is worried that she is going to lose Princess Mary because you are sending her away to live in Wales," Anne watched Henry's face to see if there was any change. "I can understand why you are doing it. But I would advise that you listen to her when comes to you," Henry laughed. Anne looked down at her feet. "Forgive me, I spoke of things I should not."
"No my Love," Henry pulled her closer and kissed her cheek. "You always have leave to speak your mind."
"I have been in talks with Dr Linarce to help him on his rounds. He wants me to help tomorrow morning we are going to the market and then go on rounds," Anne smiled happily to have a role. Henry was well known for his fear of any illness. He was worried that she might pick up something from the foul airs that London was famous for.
"As long you are safe," Henry whispered they kissed again. "Tell me more about your family. I was told by Anthony and William that you jumped out of the trees to save my life," Henry asked wanting to learn more about her.
"I am the youngest of three children. Mary, George and myself. We are very close. We have been best friends and worst enemies. My sister and I served as maids-in-waiting and ladies-in-waiting across Europe while my brother was at school. Mary is known as the beauty in the family. George is the joker. And I am the wild child. That's what my father calls us. I was always running off and getting into trouble," Anne laughed. "I love climbing. We would have long games of hide and seek and would get Queen Claude involved. Francis noticed Mary while we were playing we all would dance around the palaces. Queen Claude was a dear friend. She worried for her husband Francis being at war with the Emperor. But she is not long for this world," Anne sighed. "Sorry."
"I agree I like Francis and Claude was a good a queen for him. Sadly we are in alliance with the Spanish," Henry stated sitting down on a chair in front of the fire.
"I know," Henry knew Anne and her family preferred a French alliance. "I just miss my friend. I spent a couple of months as a maid-in-waiting to your sister Mary when she married the King of Scotland before father requested I returned to France to help Claude. I enjoyed Scotland. The court was very different but the same. I loved my studies, I speak and read a number of languages. I sow and make cloths. But, I am poor in drawing and I do not like my singing voice," Anne laughed. "Preferring to dance and play music."
"You are an angel when you dance," Henry pulled her onto his lap. "I could watch you all day long."
"What was young Henry like?" Anne asked.
"A good student," Anne giggled. "I was," Henry ran his hand down her face. "My father was a loving father but he was strict and cold. He was an odd mixture. He would push my Arthur and me to be better. My mother was a wonderful mother. Arthur was meant to be King I was meant to go into the Church. I think my parents believed I would rise to the level of Cardinal and help my brother run the country as Wolsey does. I sometimes could see myself in that role or even Pope."
"I too could see you as a pope. But, you would be much older. Having said that handsome," Anne looked up into space. "A popeship would have corrupted you has it does most."
"I agree," Henry then noticed what the two of them had said.
"I have been re-reading Sir Thomas Mores writings and I read your anti-Martin Luther work," Anne said.
"What did you think?" Henry asked.
Anne thought for around a minute. "I agree with many of the issues you argue that you have with his arguments. But, having read Luther's and others on the ideas of reform within the church I would have to argue against you. The Church and the Pope have too much control over people. And I disagree with burning books."
Henry felt conflicted if anyone else had spoken to him like that you would be ahead shorter or at least in the Tower. But with Anne it was different.
"I am a humanist. I dislike war and believe that people, male and women such be more equal as we are in the eyes of the Lord. People should be educated taught to read and write, to do maths and even to have an understanding of the laws," Anne looked at Henry who was playing with her hair. "Again I have spoken of issues that I must not."
"No," Henry whispered. "I to am a Humanist I can see what you are talking about I welcome debate."
Anne kissed Henry on the lips wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Tell me more about you," Henry softly asked. "I want to know you everything about you, my love."
"How much do you know about the aftereffects of war?" Anne asked.
"What do you mean my love?"
"Please my love I am going to be fully truthful with you and tell you things that even most of my family does not know about me," Henry agreed with a simple nod of the head and Anne started to tell her truth. "I was adopted by the Boleyn family when I was around 7 years old. My birth mother had died of childbirth fever a couple of days after and I was living in a small village in the middle of a deep and beautiful forest. The village was a simple gathering built and ran by war widows and that welcome refugee. My birth mother was one of the many refugees that escaped to the village for safety. She had been training to take her vows when she was…"
"She was a fallen nun?" Henry interrupted Anne in shock.
"No," Anne shook her head. "There was an encampment of soldiers close by to the nunnery she was living in. The soldiers were not paid for in a long time and were only given wine and beer. At the convent, they called her Novice Hélène but I have been told that Hélène was not her true name. late one night the soldiers drunk with beer and wine raided the convert, killing the senior nuns and tried to kill the Mother. She survived but just. Helena was taken by some of the men and used for their sport."
"She was raped?" Henry whispered.
"Yes," Anne whimpered tears in her eyes. Henry wiped them away.
"She managed to escape and managed to get to the village where they helped her and supported her healing her as much as they could. She called me Angèle before she passed over. My adopted family still sometimes call me by this name. The lived with an elder of the village who I call Grandmother. She looked after me as a granddaughter I miss her a lot. She was the one who asked the Boleyns that adopt me. Because they could give me a better life. They had just lost their youngest child Ann who a little older than I. They were travelling through the forest and were welcomed to rest at the settlement before continuing on in the service of the crown as an Ambassador," Anne stopped and smiled. "You have questions I know."
"Angèle is a perfect name for you," Henry hugged Anne close to him. "My Angèle, My sweet Angel."
"I am Angèle but to the world, I am Anne Boleyn," Anne said. "My parents decided to shorten it to the more English sounding Anne.
"Where were you from?" Henry asked.
"I am from the close to border between French, Spanish controlled the Netherlands and low countries. On the French side. Father and Mother were travelling to the court of Archduchess Margaret. I was then given the honour of being the youngest maid-in-waiting in her household not get being the normal 12 years old that is normal of the post," Anne was very proud of this fact. "I think she is a wonderful woman and a good ruler as regent for her people."
"I agree," Henry took a mental note of the area where Anne was born. "Thank you for telling me all of this."
"Thank you for listening to me," Anne whispered. "Do you still love or even like me knowing now who I am?"
"Yes, you are still My Sweet Anne. My guiding Angèle," Henry kissed her again.
"You are the first outside my family even my lord Uncle and the wider family does not know," Anne giggled. Still, a little shocked how well Henry appeared to be taking this news.
"I am very honoured," Henry bowed his head. Before kissing her again.
There was a short knock on the door. The pair jumped apart and stood as the door was opened by a guard and in stepped Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell.
"Your Majesty," Both bowed to the King. Both Wolsey and Cromwell looked between the young lady and the king.
"Thank you for the check-up my Lady Anne," Henry bowed to Anne dismissing her.
"Of course your Majesty you appear to have made a full recovery. I am happy to help," Anne curtsied before leaving the room.
"Thank you, gentleman, I sure you have a lot of news of the war for me and news of the Parlement's business from today," Henry said sitting down at the table.
