"Johnny what's going on?" Bobbie asked as her son in law walked toward the waiting room of General Hospital. After finding out his sister was in the hospital and in labor Lucas called his mother. In turn, the rest of her family had been called as well; Carly, Sonny, Sam and Lucky were all gathered. Patrick and Noah had both been on call and joined the others in the waiting room.
The man turned around to face his mother in law, his clothes disheveled, his eyes puffy and red, "Uh Hailey had the babies. Then she started hemorrhaging," he began to explain, "They took the girls out the room and I haven't heard what's going on and I don't know what to do."
Just then, Dr. Montgomery and Dr. Nero walked over to the group, "Mr. Zacchara."
"Dr. Montgomery, Dr. Nero can you tell me what's going on?"
"Due to the placental abruption Hailey lost a lot of blood. We need to do several transfusions in order to replace what's lost."
"Is she okay?" a concerned Carly asked.
"Right now she's receiving fluids," Kim began to explain, "Hailey is very healthy and the transfusions should work. Right now her body is weak from everything that's happened today and she needs time to heal. She's should be awake soon."
Johnny rubbed a hand over his weary face, "What about the babies?"
"Baby A is doing as well as can be expected for a baby born at thirty two weeks. She is in the NICU and you can see her whenever you would like," Dr. Montgomery began, "As you know Baby B has coarctation of the aorta. It's gotten much smaller at this point which is causing her breathing problems."
"What can you do about it?"
"Surgery."
"You want to cut open my newborn?" exclaimed Johnny.
"I know that it seems scary but this surgery is quite common I have performed it numerous times. All of those babies recover and lead normal lives."
"Johnny it's the best thing for her right now," Kim explained.
Tears formed in his eyes, "Does it have to be right now? I need to. I should talk to my wife."
"It is in your daughters best interest if we operate now," Dr. Montgomery tells him, "I'll give you a few minutes to think it over."
Johnny turned to the group of family and friends gathered and asked the three doctors present,
"You're the doctors what do you think?"
"I know it's scary but Dr. Montgomery is one of the best neonatal surgeons in the country," Patrick assured his brother in law.
"This is the best option," Lucas affirmed.
"I can't make this big of a decision without Hailey."
"Johnny you know Hailey would want you to do whatever it takes to save her." Bobbie added.
" Do the surgery," Johnny said after he took several moments to make a decision.
nodded as she headed off.
"What if Hailey doesn't make it? What am I supposed to do?" Johnny cried.
"Hey don't talk like that," Sam said, "You know Hailey is as tough as they come. She's going to be okay and so is your daughter."
"I can't sit here why they cut open my child," the new father began to pace.
"I don't know about you but I am dying to see my new granddaughter," Bobbie told him.
Johnny wiped the tears, a small smile forms on his lips, "I'd love that."
"She's absolutely beautiful," beamed the proud new father, "Everything happened so fast I wasn't able to see them."
"She looks just like Hailey when she was born," Bobbie smiled.
"Hey baby girl. I'm your daddy," Johnny spoke, his voice full of pure happiness and joy. He placed his hand inside the incubator his daughter lay in. He gently stroked her forehead, careful to not touch any of the tubes attached to her, "I wish you and your sister had waited to come. But I'm so happy to meet you. Your sister is sick right now but you know what your both tough like your mommy. All my girls are going to be okay."
"That's right," Bobbie grinned as she spoke to her new granddaughter, "You're a Spencer. Spencer women are as tough as they come."
"Before Hailey and I got together I never thought about having kids. I never thought I'd be a good father. I had no idea how to be a good one. Once we started dating and I got to know Greyson and Mikayla I started dreaming about what our kids would look like. I love those two like they are my own. But seeing this little girl," Johnny poured his heart out, "Looking at her. The amount of love I have her is just indescribable."
"Welcome to parenthood," beamed Bobbie
It felt like an eternity later, when the other baby was wheeled out of surgery and into the NICU "Everything went as planned," Dr. Montgomery informed Johnny. "We'll be monitoring her for the next few days but your daughters a fighter. I have no doubt she'll be okay."
A massive sense of relief passed through Johnny at the news, "Now we just need your mommy to wake up."
Two days later and Hailey had yet to awake. Two at a time family members were allowed to see the newborns. Sam had convinced Johnny to go home to shower and change. She agreed to sit with the babies while he was at home.
"Hey you mind if I have some alone time with my new granddaughters?" Noah asked Sam.
"Not at all. I can really use a cup of coffee," she responded.
Once alone, he looked down at the newborns lying in their incubators and spoke, "I didn't get to raise your mom. I don't know what she was like growing up. But knowing her as an adult and having her as my daughter these last eight years has been a gift. And now I have the two of you. I promise to be there for the two of you for as long as I'm alive. I'm going to make up for what I lacked as a father."
While Noah visited his granddaughters, Carly stood by the bedside of her sister who had yet to awaken. "The girls are beautiful. They look just like their mamma. They're Spencer's, which means they're fighters, Hailey. They're going to be okay. But you need to wake up so that you can see them. They need their mother. I need my sister. I know I don't tell you enough but I am so happy that you're my sister. We don't always get along but I couldn't have asked for a better sister. I really need you to wake up so that I can tell you this in person."
After Carly left, Sonny visited his sister in laws hospital room, "You and Johnny Boy made some beautiful baby girls. I give you most of the credit for that," he smirked, "Their mother is one of the toughest women I ever known. You're going to get through this and so are those babies. I know we haven't always seen eye to eye and while I may disagree with your choice of husband you are my family. I love you like a sister kid. You're gonna get through this."
"Sonny."
Sonny turns around to see Johnny standing in the doorway. "Johnny."
Johnny entered the hospital room as Sonny stepped away from her bedside. Once again the air tense between the sworn enemies. The older man said nothing as he started to leave the room."
"Sonny," Johnny spoke, "I heard what you said. Thank you for being there for her."
No other words were spoken as he left the room and Johnny took a seat next to his wife's bedside. He grabbed her hand, "Hailey I really need you to wake up," he placed a kiss on her hand, "The girls. They're beautiful. They need their mother."
Johnny felt her hand squeezed his; her eyes slowly opened.
"Hey beautiful," he smiled.
"Hey."
"The babies. How are the babies?" she asked.
He took a deep breath before he spoke, "Baby B had to have surgery to fix the coarctation of the aorta but Dr. Montgomery said the surgery went perfect and she'll be fine."
"I want to see them," she pushes the blanket off of her.
"Baby, you just woke up."
"I'm fine," Hailey attempted to push herself up but is too weak to do so.
"Let me get Kim and see if she says it's okay."
"I'm a doctor. I say it's okay."
Johnny gives his wife a hard stare.
Hailey sighed, "Fine."
Kim gave Hailey the okay to get out of bed, but because she was still recovery she needed to use a wheelchair. Once the new parents spent some alone time with their newborns, her family and friends gathered outside the room.
"Do you have names picked out?" Carly asked.
Hailey nodded, "That's Eliana Marie," she pointed to Baby A. Maria being the first name of the woman Johnny most of his life believing was his mother only to find out as an adult that she was his grandmother.
"And that's Briella Jean. BJ," she pointed to the baby that was now recovering from heart surgery.
Bobbie teared up at hearing the name.
"She's our guardian angel mom."
Bobbie fought back the tears, "Yes she is."
