Oh, the emotions. Also sorry if you liked Marian in this fic, I did too until this point but this had to be done.
Regina stood in the hallway for what seemed like forever, just staring at the paper in her hands, what the hell was going on? She didn't even know what to do, or what to say. She had no words. Swallowing heavily, she folded up the paper and slipped it into the pocket of her robe before grabbing the pizza boxes and heading up the stairs, still wondering what she was going to say once she reached the bedroom. How was she supposed to act after finding out something that huge?
"Did you answer the door like that?" Robin asked, his eyes widening as he looked at her.
"Yes why, what…" she looked down at herself realising that the robe had come undone a little, revealing a generous amount of her cleavage. "Shit, no wonder the pizza girl was looking at me funny," Regina huffed, adjusting her clothes before passing the pizzas to Robin. Marian had seemingly slipped into the bathroom for something and Regina was on edge, she didn't know what to do.
"Hey you okay? Don't worry about it, I'm sure she was just admiring," Robin grinned playfully in a way that he thought was reassuring.
"I'm not worried about that," she smiled softly, Marian re-entered the room, puffing her hair and Regina stared at her, feeling herself begin to become uncomfortable. "I might actually head home now."
"What? We just ordered food," Robin furrowed his eyebrows.
"I know, I… never mind," god she wanted to leave. She either left or there would be a serious confrontation, she didn't think she would be able to hold back. There had to be some other way of going about it, how was she supposed to come to terms with what she knew when they were sitting just there. She wriggled her fingers nervously before looking at Marian, the woman was watching her with narrowed eyes. "Marian, shall we go and get some drinks?"
"I can do it if you…"
"No, Robin, you stay put, we'll be back in a few minutes, Marian," Regina demanded. She needed to talk about this now before she did something, she knew she would regret and the only way to do was that was to confront the woman fair and square.
"Alright," she nodded leading the way downstairs with Regina following behind her as the headed into the kitchen. "Okay, what was that about?" Marian huffed, "we could have let Robin grab drinks."
"I need to talk to you." Regina tried to force herself to remain calm but was struggling, she really was, she didn't know how to contain it. "What is this about?" she asked, placing the paper down on the marble counter in front of the other woman, watching a multitude of emotions flash over her face before she opted for a scoff as she snatched the paper up in her hands and tore it in half.
"That is nothing."
"It's not nothing, why did you have that? It fell out of your coat."
"Why are you looking through my stuff?"
"I wasn't, answer the question Marian. Why do you have that leaflet?"
"It isn't mine; I was looking through it for a friend okay," she huffed, tucking a strand of her dark hair behind her ear, "I can't believe you would even question me on it! What the fuck Regina!"
"I don't believe you Marian! I wish I did, but I don't," she shook her head. Bullshit, if that were the truth, she would have said that straight away instead of acting strange and ripping up the paper. "Does Robin know?"
"There's nothing for him to know, it isn't mine!"
"Stop lying to me, I'm a lawyer I know when people are lying and you certainly are. Tell me the truth. Does Robin know?" Regina was trying to control her anger; she was seconds away from storming up there and just telling him without even giving her a chance to explain.
"No, he doesn't know and he never will."
"You can't keep something like this from him."
"I can do whatever I want, it's my life, my choice."
"I can't believe you are using that lame ass excuse! Are you just going to carry on without telling him, without even letting him know? How can you even think about doing that to him Marian! He deserves to know what's going on, it isn't fair." Marian's eyes narrowed as she took a couple of steps closer to Regina, sizing her up, she was a little taller but Regina wasn't intimidated, she was fuming. "You need to tell him the truth."
"I don't need to do anything, and you need to stay out of it. If you even think about telling him about this, I'll…"
"You'll what? What are you going to do to me Marian?" she hissed, "you know what, you really are a manipulative bitch, I saw it at the beginning, before you hid behind your charm, but now I see you for who you really are. A snake, a poisonous snake!"
"Get out before I kick you out."
"I'm not going anywhere," Regina huffed, pushing past her to the fridge and grabbing the drinks they had come down for, "I'm going to go back upstairs and tell Robin your little secret. We'll see what he has to say about it, shall we?"
"You really don't want to do that," Marian snarled, knocking the carton of juice out of her hands before pressing her against the counter. "I have your mother's number in my phone, I guess it was a little insurance policy in case something like this happened."
"What are you talking about?"
"Oh, telling your dearest mother about your sexual habits, I'm sure she would love to know what a whore her dear daughter is."
"She wouldn't believe you."
"I also have this," she grinned, pulling her phone out of her pocket and showing her a photo taken the night before, then a video, Regina stared at her in shock, disgust rolling through her at the fact that she had been filmed without her consent. "Just think, what would your boss say finding this video of his favourite employee in his inbox? Pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard to find his email address as well."
"You really are vile."
"Hi bitch, you worked it out. I've known about the cutesy precious feelings you have for Robin for a while, how adorable. Do you love him?"
"Shut up."
"Ooh touched a nerve there, I guess that was a yes."
Regina couldn't believe how quickly the situation had escalated; it had gone from crazy to fucking insane in a matter of minutes. Marian was actually an absolute psycho how hadn't she seen it before? "I can't believe this, what is wrong with you?"
"I don't want Robin to know about this."
"I gathered that, but why?"
"You know exactly why."
Regina glared at her before shoving her away, "I'm going to go get my things," she hissed. What could she really do? She knew Robin deserved the truth, but Marian was threatening her career, everything she had worked so hard for. She knew Mr Gold was conservative and would be extremely disapproving of such antics, should he see that video she would most likely lose her job.
"Regina, you're not going to tell him, are you?" Marian called after her.
She turned to look at her, seeing the panic on the other woman's face, what the hell was she playing at, she'd go from scary psychopath one minute to scared victim the next. "You need to do the right thing, delete that video and talk to Robin."
"We both know I can't do that."
"Why?"
"He'd leave me!"
"Maybe that would be for the best."
"Oh what, so that he can go play happy families with you?"
"God you really don't know Robin do you, he is the most honourable man and…"
"I'm not telling him."
Regina dropped her shoulders in defeat, she'd tried she really had but there was no talking to her, no dissuading her. She wouldn't listen which meant that Robin was going to suffer because of her. It wasn't fair, he deserved the truth, maybe she was going to have to be the one to tell him. She stopped at the bottom of the stairs and turned to look at Marian who was still stood in the same position, "I can't live with this on my conscious, I have to tell him."
"Regina! No. No you can't!" She yelled, rushing towards her, blocking her way up the stairs.
"He needs to know Marian!"
"I need to know what?"
"Don't you say a fucking word," Marian hissed in her ear before turning to look at Robin, "I accidentally dropped the last of the juice, sorry."
"Seriously?" he rose an eyebrow as he looked from Regina to Marian and then back again, "the pizza is going cold, what are the two of you doing down here?" Something was going on that they weren't telling him, they were keeping something from him and he wanted to know what it was. "Regina, what's going on?"
"I'm going home."
"What about the pizza? I thought you were staying over again."
"No, this was a mistake," she sighed. The words were on the top of her tongue and both her head and heart were screaming at her to tell him, tell him what Marian was hiding from him. Let the truth flow and deal with the consequences. He was being lied to by the person who was supposed to love him to be most, she didn't love him, if she did she wouldn't do this to him.
"Not this again!" He yelled causing both her and Marian to jump somewhat, not expecting the outburst. "Regina, you said just last night that you were willing to give this a shot. Please don't go back on that."
"I can't be here Robin, I'm sorry." she moved past him into the bedroom and picked up her red dress from where it had been practically flung to the floor the night before. She could hear him arguing with Marian as she collected her things, not that she had brought much with her, just her clothes and phone. Once she was redressed, she took a deep breath and left the bedroom, the couple were still going strong and she could hear Robin defending her to Marian, she knew the woman was trying to poison him against her, especially now that Regina knew her dirty little secret.
"So that's it, you just walk out of here again, after it went so well the last time?!" Robin huffed as she pushed her way past them and slipped into her heels. He was looking at her as if she was the one who had betrayed him, as though she was in the wrong and it wasn't fair, she shouldn't be taking the stick for something Marian had done.
"You know how I feel about you, just trust in that," she whispered as she wrapped her arms around him, "but please, don't trust her." She pulled back, running her fingers gently over his cheek before turning to Marian and fixing her with a harsh stare. "I just hope you do the right thing." With that she slipped out of the door, slamming it behind her, she just hoped that Robin received the message that he was to question Marian and her motives.
As soon as she arrived home she pulled into the driveway and stormed into the house, there was someone she needed to talk to about this, as much as she hated to admit it, she knew it needed to be done. With a sigh she locked the door behind her and flopped down on the couch, staring at the wall, she had to pluck up the courage to call them, to even begin talking with them.
She was still angry at Marian and she wondered if Robin was grilling her for the truth like she might have hoped he would be. Though knowing the snake that was Marian she was probably wriggling her way out of it, charming him away from what she was and what she was doing. She found her phone and looked intently at the screen before sighing and bringing up their contact, reluctantly she pressed the call button and took a deep breath.
"Hello?"
"Hi."
"Regina, why are you calling?"
"I need to speak to you about something, its important."
"Well okay, I'm listening."
"It needs to be in person actually." She murmured, it wasn't something she was going to speak about over the phone, she needed to do it face to face.
"Right, I guess I could come to you, or we could meet at the rabbit hole?"
"That sounds like a plan," Regina nodded, she didn't really want to do it at home, though it was a private conversation she wanted to have it in a public place.
"Give me an hour and I'll meet you there."
"Okay, I'll see you then." With that she cut off the phone, feeling anxiety roll in her stomach, she was nervous about how the conversation might go and she was also worrying about Robin. She was itching to go over there and tell him what was going on, but first she had to question someone else, she needed to know more about the situation and they might have the answers she sought.
She stood from the couch and moved over to the bar, rifling through the different bottles of alcohol until she came across a bottle of vodka. With a roll of her eyes she poured some of the clear liquid into a shot glass and threw it back, the alcohol burning her throat as it went down. She winced and slammed the glass back onto the table, she'd hoped for the drink to give her a little courage but she still felt as nervous as ever.
Regina knew that she needed to get ready, she had no makeup on and was wearing the dress from last night, for this meeting she didn't want to look sexy, she wanted to look as though she meant business. She was going to sort out this mess if it was the last thing she did.
An hour later she walked into the rabbit hole wearing a tight pair of black slacks and a matching jacket with a deep red corset style shirt, her hair was scraped back out of her face and she hoped she looked serious enough for this conversation. She glanced around the place before spotting the person she had come to see sat at the bar chatting someone up. She huffed to herself before weaving her way through the patrons and sauntering up to the bar, "I'll have an apple martini, on him," she ordered, gesturing to the guy at her left.
"Regina, you showed."
"Did you doubt that I wouldn't? Daniel."
"For a moment yes, I did. Though I have to say I'm very interested to see what you wanted to say to me, considering the last time we saw each other you chucked me out on my ass." He snorted, paying for her drink as the bartender handed it over. Good, he could pay for her drinks, he owed her that much.
"Yes, well, that was regrettable but necessary. You seemed to find a need to carry on pestering me."
"You know me Gina, I like getting my own way."
"Yes, and you throw a strop if you don't get it," she scoffed, picking up her drink and following him over to a booth, well aware of the eyes of the woman he had been talking to on them as they left. "Anyway, that's not why I asked to meet you."
"Why is that then? Put me out of my misery and let me know," he grinned, taking swig of his own drink and looking at her in a way that a few years ago would have charmed the pants off her, literally, but she was older and wiser now, she wasn't as weakened to his charms anymore.
"Actually, it's about Marian."
"Marian? I thought it was Robin you were into."
"It is."
"You're in love with him?" Daniel asked with a raised eyebrow, he didn't seem shocked though, it was almost as though it were common knowledge.
"Perhaps so," she nodded, there wasn't any point in lying and telling the truth was more likely to get him to open up to her. "Though as I said, I need to talk to you about Marian."
"You want me to charm her away from Robin so you can have him for yourself?"
"No."
"Shame, I would be up for it."
"Oh I know you would, you'd be up for anything that would get you laid and that's the problem I think." Regina took a sip of her drink, trying to calm her racing heart, what she was about to bring up with him was deeply personal and probably crossing the line but she needed to know if he knew already, if he knew and Robin didn't. "Did you know she'd been ill?"
"She told me some things yes."
Regina narrowed her eyes at him before scoffing to herself and shaking her head, "you know."
"Know what?"
"You know what! You know, don't you?!"
"She told you?"
"No, she didn't tell me, I found out accidentally, but clearly she told you," Regina spat. The anger from earlier was growing again, how deep did this betrayal lie. Regina stared at him for a moment before her eyes widened a little, "wait, why would she tell you and not Robin, that doesn't make sense she… no." Realisation hit her like a freight train and she felt as though she might throw up.
"Regina…"
"No, tell me you didn't."
"Regina listen to me it's not what you think, we…"
"Tell me you didn't do what I think you did."
"No it wasn't…"
"How long was it going on?" she whispered, a lump in her throat as she tried to hold back the tears, "how long were you screwing her behind my back?! You were cheating on me with her! What about Robin?! How could you do that to him, you knew she had a boyfriend."
"We had an open relationship Regina."
"Fuck that! We were swingers not cheaters, I never once slept with someone else without you, never, that's the difference between swinging and cheating. We weren't open to see who we pleased, especially not someone who we didn't both know about. How long was it going on? Before we started seeing them together? Don't even think about lying to me Daniel because I will know."
"You don't want to know Regina! You're just torturing yourself."
"Daniel. Tell me, how long were you with her behind my back?"
"Ten…"
"Weeks?" her eyes widened.
"Months."
"Months," she gasped, staring at him in complete and utter shock, he'd been cheating on her for ten months and she hadn't even realised, hadn't even known. She'd been the unknowing wife, whilst she'd been at home waiting on him when he'd been late at work, he'd most likely been fucking Marian on his desk. And that bitch! The audacity she had to go behind her back in such a way and then pretend to be attracted to her, pretend that she actually liked her. "Why?" she whispered, "why Daniel? I did everything for you, everything you wanted to do and it still wasn't enough."
She was trying not to break down but was struggling to deal with it, the relationship might be over but it didn't change the fact that she had been lied to for almost a year whilst her boyfriend snuck around behind her back with another woman. It was an affair and Robin would be heartbroken if he knew, he had to know though, there wasn't a chance in hell she wasn't going to tell him everything as soon as she could. He needed to know everything and she would be the one to reveal Marian and Daniel's dirty secret.
"I'm sorry Regina, she didn't mean anything to me, not the way you do."
"You've proven to me time and time again that you can't be trusted and this has just confirmed it. You're a liar and a cheat Daniel Colter. As is Marian. You betrayed me, snuck around behind my back and for what huh? What did you get out of it? Did it make you happy?"
"No."
"Didn't think so. You could have just finished with me. Why didn't you just break it off? If you were going to have an affair, why couldn't you have let me go? Why did you have to break my heart?" she breathed, closing her eyes as she tried to stop herself from crying in front of him, she wouldn't do it, wouldn't let him see her tears. Her emotions were all over the place, a mixture of devastated and absolutely livid.
"I'm sorry, I really am."
"I don't think you are really though Daniel, if you were you wouldn't have done it in the first place."
He cast her a forlorn look and shook his head, "I know I was an awful boyfriend to you, but you know I did love you, still do."
"Well, I don't love you anymore Daniel, I am done being in love with you because all it ever brought me was hurt and pain. You need to sort this shit with Marian out and quickly. Step up and do the right thing. I'm going to go now."
"Regina…"
"No, I can't even look at you."
"Please just…"
"Goodbye Daniel." With that she downed the last of her apple martini and stood from the booth, stopping by the bar on her way to the exit and approaching the woman he had been talking to, "give you a word of warning, stay well away from that asshole." Satisfied with her words she left the bar and took a deep breath, as she leant against the wall tears slipped from her eyes, she needed to catch an uber home, she was emotionally drained and over the limit.
After a silent car ride, she walked up her driveway, she was ready to fall into bed and sleep for a hundred years after the day she'd had. Though as soon as the house came into view, she knew that probably wouldn't be happening, "Robin?"
"You're back."
"How long have you been sat here?" she asked, looking at him as he stood up from the bench in her front yard. He looked rough, really rough and she knew in that moment that he knew everything, one look at him was enough to know that.
"A few hours, I guess. I just left and came here."
Regina shook her head and wrapped her arms around him, "I'm sorry."
"God, its not your fault," he sighed, hugging her back, dropping his head into the crook of her neck as he tightened the embrace. "I can't believe I didn't see it sooner."
"Neither of us did," she murmured, tracing patterns on his back with her fingers. She just wanted to go inside and hold him, fall asleep in his arms if he would let her, she hoped that was why he had come to her, he obviously felt comfortable with her, maybe she was his safe place as he was hers.
"Where have you been?" he asked, pulling back to look at her, "have you been crying?"
"A little, I confronted Daniel and he told me everything I needed to know, it was just hard hearing it, but I suppose it was even worse for you."
"I don't think it has even sunk in yet, I just feel like she betrayed me."
"She did, they both did. We were lied to for months."
"Yeah."
"Shall we go inside? I think we could both do with another drink and then a good sleep."
"Agreed."
"Come on," she sighed, threading her fingers through his as she unlocked the door and they slipped inside, trying to put both Marian and Daniel to the back of their minds. It would be hard but they would get one another through it, Regina was certain of that, they would turn things around and finally be free of their toxic relationships.
But do we know everything? Find out in the next chapter which will be Robin's POV
