Chapter Twenty-One: Shattered (Part Two)
…
6:43PM -Back at The Well; The Forest
"Well," the Snow Queen said, looking around. "Not a place I would've personally chosen but..." she then stopped when she glanced upwards; her eyes narrowing on the purple cloud that was floating above them. Snapping her gaze back down, she glowered at them. "...you lied to me..."
"And, once again, you've proven yourself too gullible to know the difference," came a voice she knew all too well.
"Captain," she sneered, glancing over her shoulder where she spied Killian, Robin, Belle and parts of the wishing well. "Looks like one is missing from this joyous celebration..."
"I'm right here," Regina said, appearing off to her right in a cloud of smoke. "I wouldn't miss this for the world." She looked at Emma and gave her a nod. "Thanks for the heads up."
"Likewise," Robin followed, waving his cell in the air before putting it into his back pocket. "It would've been a nasty surprise otherwise..."
The Snow Queen looked at Emma, feeling betrayed. "Why?"
"Well, after I realized what a very convincing Elsa was doing." she gestured at the blonde beside her, who gave her a smile back. "I figured that we should get you on our turf."
The Snow Queen regarded her with cold eyes. "For what purpose?"
"For this," Regina answered, swiping a hand in the air. Her magic pummeled into the unexpected woman, knocking her flat on her back, her eyes wide.
Elsa then released a burst of energy from her now poised fingers, encasing her aunt's entire body in layers upon layers of solidified ice. Keeping her hands up, she gritted her teeth together, the strain of keeping her magic intact challenging every ounce of her strength.
"Hold her there, Elsa!" Emma cried out before running over to Regina. "I know how we can get rid of these ribbons. Even though we're her energy source, the ribbons are a symbol of her love for us and they protect us from hurting her." Grabbing at her wrist, she tugged on it. "So, in order to take these off, we need the opposite. Hate..."
Regina raised her brow. "It's great that you figured it out but..."
"I need you to free us," Emma explained. "I know that you're still angry at me for what I did. You told me that you need to move on, but deep down, I know you're pissed." She could see some fire lick at Regina's eyes. I need to try harder. "You probably don't even have to dig deep to find it," Emma continued, taking a step back. "Just think of that handsome man over there that you can't have and how much it burns you up inside..."
"Stop it, Emma," she said, her tone now harsh and her hands aglow.
Concerned, Killian stepped forward while the others remained alert. "Swan..."
Belle's vision jumped from the two rapidly. "Maybe we should think of another way to do this...
"You know what else is sad," Emma interrupted, gesturing to the group. "That my rocky love life is doing so much better than yours. I mean," she paused, continuing to walk backwards towards a struggling Elsa. Sorry, Regina, she thought as she stared at the enraged woman. "He broke up with me and now, we're pretty much on the mend..."
"Emma," Robin warned, firmly. "Stop it, now."
At the sound of his voice, Regina snapped. Lifting a hand, she summoned fire into her palms then shot them into Emma's direction.
"Elsa, left hand up!" Emma cried out, blocking her face with the wrist bearing the ribbon. Barely able to maintain the magic that was holding an emerging Snow Queen, Elsa managed to pull her needed hand away. Holding it up alongside Emma's, their ribbons sparked with an array of colors when Regina's fire hit them.
Soon snapping under the strain, the magic within the yellow ties severed and fell to the ground, untethering the two from the Snow Queen with a loud burst.
Regina stopped her magical tirade with a flick of her wrists, a heavy sigh escaping from her lips. Focusing on her breathing, she met the apologetic eyes of Emma. "Nice play," she said, her tone unreadable.
"I'm so sorry," she said, knowing that she had crossed the line—even if it was for a good reason. She was going to take a timid step forward when the sound of crumbling ice caught her attention. Turning around, she saw the now freed Snow Queen toss a raised hand.
The action was wide and precise enough to fling all except a slumped over Elsa and a now revealed Anna and Kristoff, who had been standing beside the portion of the well she couldn't see before.
"How?" the Snow Queen began, shock twisting her features. "How the hell are you two here?!"
"Well, we've been spotted," Kristoff muttered, about to protectively stand in front of his fiance, but he wasn't fast enough. "Anna!" he cried when she suddenly rushed out, not stopping until she was a few feet from a discerning Snow Queen.
"That's why this protective spell is so successful and so powerful," the older woman realized with a growl. "It's because they found you."
Anna swallowed the lump in her throat before glancing briefly over at her sister. "I know you hate because of your sisters," she said, her tone trembling when she looked back at the Snow Queen. "But I don't blame you. From what you told me back at Arendelle, they mocked you and hurt you and even though one of them was our mom...I don't blame you for being angry..."
"You know nothing!"
"I know what it feels like to be shut up and ignored!" Anna cried, her eyes welling up. "I understand parts of your pain. I may not have any magic but I still feel! I still care for other people!" She took a step closer. "There has to be some good left in you. There has to be a love for humanity. Please, let go of this hate..."
"I'm sorry for t-tricking you," Elsa then added, desperately trying to steady her breathing. Wobbling, she walked a couple of steps, trying to regain some energy. "I'm sorry on behalf of my mother but Anna's right. Just let it go."
"You weren't there," the Snow Queen challenged. "You didn't see the way they looked at me! My own family!"
As the other two continued, Anna suddenly felt a burning sensation in one of her pockets. Turning away from the conversation, she reached in and pulled it out. It was a folded up note with a lump inside of it. How did this get in here?
Peeling several folds back, she instantly recognized the scrawled handwriting at the top of the parchment paper.
Mother.
Opening the rest of it, a stone fell into the palm of her hands. Furrowing her brows, Anna looked at it before returning to the letter, skimmed the entire thing. It all makes sense, she thought, staring at the two items in her hands.
Promptly turning around, Anna held it up and began reading it aloud.
"Dear Elsa and Anna," she began, tears freely falling down her cheeks. She read how their mother was sorry for not going to be there to watch them grow before confessing to a secret she had been keeping from them: her sisters. One was accidentally murdered by the other but she overreacted and trapped the survivor in an urn for everybody's protection. She then had the trolls wipe them from the people of Arendelle's memories and all because she was too afraid.
"...and now, my dear sweet Elsa shares her abilities, one that both frightens and amazes me. Here," Anna said, lifting up the stone in her hand. "...remember the good times..."
The Snow Queen glared at her and what she was holding, mixed emotions tumbling through her. "Where did you get that?"
"It appeared in my pocket," Anna answered, her determination unwavering.
"The wishing star," Elsa then said, her eyes wide when she turned them to her sister. "I asked for it to bring you to me so we could fight her together...and it did. When the time was right, it gave us the means..."
The Snow Queen's gaze hardened at the statement, her eyes falling back onto the letter.
"Don't you see?" Anna said, "She wrote this before she died...and she mentioned you. She loved you. She made a mistake and regretted it till the end of her days."
"No," the Snow Queen replied, refusing to believe it. Looking at her nieces, her hands clenched then unclenched. Memories of her sisters began to flood her mind: how close they were, how much they loved each other before she was trapped and how her powers fascinated them.
Closing her eyes, tears stung at them before a seething anger dried them.
Hearing approaching footsteps, she quickly looked up. The others had recovered and were slowly approaching her. "NO!" she screamed, her hands jerking forward to blow them away again.
Unprotected, her nieces, and an approaching Kristoff, were pushed backwards with Anna accidentally dropping the items, the stone heavily rolling past the Snow Queen while the letter just fluttered down onto a patch of leaves.
Regina blocked the blast from pushing herself and the others back with a twirl of her one finger, not in the mood to have the same thing happen to them twice. She retaliated with one of her own, but it too was deterred with a gesture of a hand.
Then, coming up from behind Regina, Emma flicked out a ball of sizzling energy which took the Snow Queen by surprise. Hitting her in the right shoulder, the momentum spun her around and she fell, her knees buckling while her hands braced for impact. Palms skidding, her fingers grazed a smooth, hard object. Coughing, she tried to sit up but before she could, she found her eyes sweeping over to what she had touched.
It was the stone that Anna had showed her.
Suddenly, it began to glow.
Not having time to react, she was soon pelted by a flurry of happy memories. Ones that she knew.
She saw herself with her sisters in all stages of life. All of them happy. One by one, they consumed her, filling her with limitless feelings of joy, friendship and love.
Love, she thought, the images of their smiling faces overwhelming her, making her remember all of the good times they had shared. They...they weren't all bad. They did love me. I can feel it. I can see it.
Removing her hand from the stone, she thought that those memories would fade, leaving her with the bitter void she'd been living with for so many years, but they didn't.
They had become a part of her.
Grabbing the stone, she climbed to her feet, tears spilling from her eyes. A horrified feeling then sliced through her. Not because of the memories but because of what she had done. Before, the spell she had cast brought meaning and accomplishment to her life, but now that she knew the truth and accepted everything that had been told to her, it was a legacy she no longer wanted.
Turning around, she met the eyes of everybody present.
Now on their feet, Elsa and Anna were the closest people to her and they instantly noticed the change. They took a couple of steps towards their aunt, Elsa more wary of the two, but she stopped them with a raise of her hand.
"I have been wrong this entire time," the Snow Queen whispered, her voice quivering. "But I know what must be done to end it."
Looking at her nieces, she continued, her arm dropping. "You probably don't remember the epilogue to The Trolden Glass legend, particularly you, Anna," she said with a small smile, recalling a previous moment between them. She then glanced over at Regina. "It also doesn't help that I tore it from that green book you had in your possession...but...in the end, to stop the spell, the Nordic King had to be killed..."
Anna's mouth dropped open. "There has to be some other way…"
"There isn't," she disagreed. Raising both of her arms high into the air, she then looked up at her large cloud formation, which suddenly glistened and flashed. Rumbling, a forceful whirlwind began to wrap around the Snow Queen, beginning from her feet then up past her head, her form sparkling in a dull grey color.
"She's sacrificing herself to end the curse," Belle whispered, swallowing hard.
"I'm sorry!" the Snow Queen then yelled, her voice carrying over the howling winds, glass shards and mist. "I'm so sorry for everything that I've done! I was so stupid and now, you face more troubles from Rumple, who...who I freed! I-I hope you all can forgive me...in time!"
Quickly, using what little magic she had left in her control, she summoned the pebbles to her, the smooth rocks shimmering inside of her energy. Shooting them out, she had them hover in front of Emma and Elsa, and before the two could protest, a beam erupted from them and up to their foreheads, feeding their memories back to them before they faded away.
Emma fell to her feet when everything was finally intact. "She..." she began, glancing up at the shaking Snow Queen, sad smiles on both of their faces. "She was one of my foster parents." Sniffing, tears began to clog her throat when Killian moved to kneel down beside her. "I-I loved her...she was the only one who understood m-me..."
Elsa could now remember everything too, making her eyes well up as well. "I'm sorry too, Aunt Ingrid."
Eyes widening at the sound of her given name, the Snow Queen released a shuddering breath. "You know," she began, understanding that she had seconds left. Glancing at the Emma, Elsa and Anna, but focusing mainly on Emma, she continued. "There was a prophecy that you would help me find my sisters...and you did. Through you," she then looked at a crying Anna. "And because of you, I know that I was loved."
Closing her eyes in contentment, she ended the Shattered Spell with a blast of energy, her figure and the memory stone disappearing in a fast paced whirlwind before it died down and dissipated.
Looking up, the group could now see the night sky through the large receding cloud. Soon after, their own protective barrier shimmered away, its purpose fulfilled.
Remaining silent, they all gave the newly viewed INGRID a moment, eyes turned downward at her willing sacrifice.
But before they could process anything, a blood curdling scream spewed out from Killian, who fell forward, his hand fastened to his chest.
A voice began to formulate inside of his head:
The cloud formation and its spell are both gone...now the fun can begin...
With his heart being crushed by an unseen force, Killian doubled over, his breathing serrated from the pain.
