Previously on Frenemies:

The sound of her hand coming into contact with his cheek echoed in the empty classroom.

His fingertips reached his cheeks, wincing slightly as he touched his stinging cheek.

"I-I hate you!"

He swallowed, It's better this way, he thought before returning back to his previous character, "Likewise."

A week had passed and Sakura hadn't told anyone about what happened with Sasuke. Not even Ino.

She decided it was better this way. That way Ino wouldn't have to pick sides. Not that she'd pick hers anyway, Sasuke and her were friend before the pinkette and she didn't expect much anyway.

She sighed into her pillow, How could I be so stupid? she thought.

Gaara had approached her the day after the incident with Sasuke because she had skipped out on the rest of her classes for that day.

He had tried to explain, but Sakura didn't have the energy to listen and she walked past him without a second thought.

It was all a game to them, she thought bitterly, I was just a game.

Couldn't they find something more entertaining to do than play with someone else's emotions?

Then again, she didn't think she had the right to be hurt when she had been spying on him all along and reporting back to his brother.

Itachi, she thought, cursing into the pillow, she had yet to tell him. She had ignored all his calls and texts. But what would she tell him? That she couldn't keep an eye on Sasuke anymore because he had called it quits on his latest objective?

Would Sasuke even want to know that Itachi was up to date with his life? Surely, he would be upset. Any chance that he would be understanding flew out the window the moment he revealed his true intentions with her. He wouldn't have any consideration with her and would be furious, no doubt.

Even though he hurt her, Sakura didn't want to hurt him.

"N-Naruto-kun, are you sure Sasuke-kun hasn't told you anything a-about what's going on w-with Sakura-chan?"

Hinata's worried tone pulled at his heart. Of course he knew what happened and it wasn't a pretty sight on his side either.

Sasuke had been drinking again and sneaking out of the school to god knows where, avoiding them all, even him.

"I-I'm just w-worried, she isn't eating well, y-you know a-and she is always in the d-dorm doing homework."

Naruto shifted slightly, scratching the back of his neck, "Maybe she's really focused on classes, exams are coming up pretty soon."

Hinata nodded, "M-maybe, but I-I know something is up," She said, fully convinced of her deduction, "Sh-she has been crying for days now a-and I know s-something must've happened with her and Sasuke-kun b-because they a-avoid each other at a-all costs."

He sighed, "Yeah, the teme has been sulking too but you probably already know why." He said, assuming Hinata knew about the recording Sasuke showed him, or at least what Sakura's business with both brothers was.

"W-why is Sasuke-kun sulking?"

Naruto decided to be more conscious about his mouth this time around, "Sakura-chan is more fit to tell you than me, Hina-chan, I really can't tell you this time."

Ino didn't understand many things.

Starting with why that cow-rider had Temari pressed against the wall when they had broken up weeks ago.

Her baby blue eyes followed the way his hands held her blonde ex-best friend, narrowing slightly when Temari let him touch her so freely. In the middle of the hallway!

She was about to turn away, she shouldn't be part of their private moment but before she could turn away, Shikamaru's eyes caught hers.

She gulped when he glared at her.

She quickly turned away and rushed out of the hall.

"Lee, you're not serious," Tenten said incredulously, "There's no way!"

The bowl-cut haired teen just nodded enthusiastically, "The power of youth says there's a way!" he exclaimed, "Would you like to join me one day?"

Tenten grinned, "No way! I value my shins thank you very much."

He pouted, "Come on! I'm sure you'll be able to keep up, you're one of the most youthful athletes I know." he insisted.

She bit her lip, He's got that right, "I don't know, I have a running route I take with..." She paused recalling that Neji had asked her to keep it low key, "...with myself, and you know how routine is good and all." She told him.

"Hm, you have a point, BUT Tenten-chan getting out of routine can increase your youthfulness on the field!"

The brunette's interest was piqued, plus it wasn't like Neji was going to miss her anyway. He was always criticizing her running form, going off on a tangent of how she slows him down.

"You're right," She agreed, "I'll go with you. When's your next time going?"

"Tomorrow morning if you're up for it!" He said enthusiastically.

He won't mind if I cancel last minute, right? she thought, "For sure, I'll see you then."

To: Tenten

Where are you?

Neji frowned, he hated waiting for late people. His time was very valuable to him and he didn't like to waste it on nonsense.

Ino laid her head on Sakura's legs with her arm over her eyes, "And then he looked at me Forehead! Looking at me like I was some sort of pervert!"

Sakura smiled softly, lacking the energy to laugh at her friend.

Ino looked up, "Sakura! Are you listening?"

The pinkette nodded, "Yeah, I'm just tired."

Ino narrowed her eyes at the pinkette, "Of what, Forehead, you've been lazing here all day!"

"It's Saturday! It's my day off, I can spend my time however I want, pig."

The blonde sat up on the bed, "Don't think I haven't noticed you've been awfully quiet ever since that day you skipped classes with Sasuke."

Sakura's small smile faltered, and she swung her legs off the bed to get off her bed.

Ino frowned when Sakura stood up and made her way to her closet, "Are you avoiding the topic?"

Sakura shook her head dismissively, concentrated on picking clothes to change into, "I just want to grab some food before they close for dinner."

"Right," Ino said sarcastically, "What happened with Sasuke that day?" She pushed. Ino was sure Sakura had told Sasuke about what was going on because he was in the same state as her friend, if not worse.

The pinkette sighed, she didn't know what to say. They couldn't break up if they had never been together. "Nothing." She could feel her eyes begin to sting, Gosh Sakura not again.

Ino nodded, "Okay, so then why are you sad."

"I'm just tired," she mumbled, changing into some comfy sweats and an oversized sweater.

"Oi, change out of that again because we're going out after eating."

"I just told you I'm ti-"

"And I just told you we're going out, Forehead girl!"

Sakura glared at the blonde, "I'm not in the mood Ino-pig."

"Geez, Sasuke's personality really rubbed off on you, didn't it?"

Sakura's glare softened, choosing to put on her socks and slippers.

Sasuke's personality. She wanted to laugh, He sure has one.

She didn't really mean it when she said she hated him, and she hated herself for that because she should hate him, despise him but she couldn't.

Maybe it was what she deserved after what she did to him. She shut her eyes, I haven't even told him.

"Hey I was just kidding-"

"He told me I was just part of a bet." Sakura said, cutting her off.

Ino's eyes widened, "What?!" the blonde couldn't believe what Sakura had just said. Her radar couldn't have been that off, right? Her credibility was at stake here! "Sasuke?"

The pinkette nodded, taking one of her facial wipes and wiping her face with it. It was an aloe vera infused one, maybe it would reduce the redness on her face.

"That doesn't make sense," Ino pondered.

Sakura rolled her eyes at her friend, "It's not that hard to understand. I was stupid enough to fall right into his trap."

"I mean that Sasuke shouldn't be in the same state as you if it was just about the bet."

Sakura shrugged, "Maybe he's bummed out that he didn't win the bet."

"Sak, he's not that shallow-"

"Well he was shallow enough to drag my name into a stupid bet."

Sakura was right, lately Sasuke was doing things that seemed out of character for him.

Her eyes widened, "You don't think-"

"No," she said quickly, "I didn't even get to tell him about that."

Ino nodded, "Did he try explaining himself?"

She shook her head, "He doesn't care, Ino, I was just a game to him."

Sakura managed to tell her the series of events without shedding a single tear, About time, she thought to herself, a week of moping around should be enough.

"I can't believe him! Sakura, you can't keep giving him the satisfaction of seeing you like this!"

The pinkette looked at her blonde friend's angered eyes, "I don't know Ino, in a way, I deserved it after what I did to him."

"Forehead you can't be serious, nobody deserves that shit. I mean I knew he was an asshole, but this is beyond his usual stunts. Plus, he didn't even know about the whole Itachi favor thing so he has no excuse!"

Sakura opened her mouth to say something but Ino didn't let her get a word in, "And Gaara, when I get my hands on him-"

"Ino, stop, I'm over it, its better this way."

Ino furrowed her eyebrows, "Sak, what they did is beyond cowardly, why are you being so passive about this?"

"Because..." Sakura shrugged. She felt her eyes starting to pool with what she thought wasn't even possible at this point, Fuck, I'm crying again.

Ino stood to hug her friend even though Sakura waved her off, "Because I..." she croaked, "I-I actually liked him."

Sasuke was ready to leave this hellhole of a school.

His father was starting to campaign again and of course Fugaku Uchiha couldn't be seen without his beloved family. Usually Sasuke did anything he could to avoid these events so when he didn't protest to his father's request, Fugaku was pleasantly surprised.

"Teme, I'm tired of this evasive attitude of yours, and unlike most times, I actually care this time because first you ignore us and now you're packing a suitcase, are you running away?"

Sasuke glared at Naruto, "No idiot." He told him and before the blonde could ask again he added, "But I'll be back in a week."

"Where are you going then?"

"Campaigning."

Naruto nodded, Sasuke was always given permission by the school to miss school when events like this came up as long as Sasuke completed all the assignments for the week.

"Does Sakura-chan know?"

Rolling his eyes he continued to pack his clothes, "Why would I tell her?" He asked but his tone showed no expectation for an answer.

"Because she might be worried!"

"It's over between us, I made it pretty clear."

Naruto huffed, scowling at his stubborn friend looking like he had something on his mind but he kept his mouth shut.

"What."

The blonde glared at the Uchiha, "You both made mistakes why can't you get over it if you're both so miserable!"

Sakura's miserable? He thought before shaking it off, jaw hardening in the process just like his heart, but he didn't respond, reaching over to put on his airpods to listen to music. Maybe it would drown out the dobe's annoying comments.

"You bastard! You can't ask 'what' and then ignore me when I respond!"

Sakura and Ino made their way towards the cafeteria after the blonde had pep-talked Sakura about how Sasuke didn't deserve her.

"I hope you don't mind that I invited Sai but we're a bit behind sched with the project."

The pinkette shrugged, "As long as he doesn't bother me, I'm fine."

Ino was about to retort something about her being so boring, but she spotted Sakura's worst nightmare making his way down the corridor.

"Don't look now Sak, but Sasuke is making his way towards us."

Sakura's eyes widened, refusing to look towards him, pulling Ino the opposite direction and hiding behind her, "Pig, I can't face him right now, let's go-"

"Oh hey Ino, just in time to say farewell to the teme!" another boisterous loud blonde greeted, before getting closer and realizing the pink-haired girl cowering behind the curvy blonde, "Hey Sakura-chan, didn't see you there!" he laughed.

Sakura hesitantly looked up and smiled at the blonde with cerulean eyes, "Hey." She greeted, restraining herself from glancing over at the Uchiha that stood next to said blonde.

"Hi boys," Ino smiled prettily, "Or should I say 'farewell'?" she said, referring to Naruto's previous statement.

Where could he be leaving when exams are right around the corner? the pinkette wondered.

"The bastard is out for the week, politics 'nd shit."

Sasuke glared at Naruto for being the loose-mouth he was.

Ino nodded, turning to glare at Sasuke, "And you, don't you have anything to say for yourself?"

Sakura tugged at her blonde friend, "Ino," she murmured pleadingly, finally letting her eyes flicker up to Sasuke, only to find him looking right at her.

Sasuke quickly turned away and gladly returned the blonde's glare, "I don't."

Ino's glare faltered and she plastered another of her breath-taking smiles that was obviously not genuine, "Then we'll be on our way, we have places to be and dates to attend. Ciao ciao!" She chirped, pulling Sakura away before she could dismantle their cover-up.

Sakura violently stabbed her chicken, "Why did you do that?!"

Ino innocently looked up from her yogurt, "What? I didn't lie, we had Sai to attend." She said pointing to the clueless boy beside them.

The pink haired teen smiled at Sai before glaring at the blonde, "Yeah but you-"

"I was nice. I left it up to interpretation."

"Interpretation is a human characteristic that can be one's fault if they just jump to conclusions instead of simply interpreting a scenario."

Sasuke was someone to jump too quickly, but...Sakura looked at Sai weirdly, Why is Sai so robotic?

"Sai, babe, you can't just go around and say stuff like that, it'll scare the girls off, look at Sak's face."

Sai turned to the pinkette, analyzing her expression, "I apologize if I made you uncomfortable, I-"

"You didn't, I was just processing your quote." Sakura said, cutting him off and offering him a smile to reassure that she wasn't uncomfortable.

"Processing is similar to interpretation, but interpretation is needed before you can process anythin-"

"Okay, cut this boring crap, you're losing me but most importantly the girl," Ino said pointing at Sakura.

Sakura shot Ino a look of disbelief for cutting off the poor guy mid-explanation, "Pig, I was actually interested in having him finish his thoughts!"

"Yeah, well I'm his social coach, and I think-"

"'Social coach' what even- Is that even a thing?"

"Yes! Look it up, Forehead."

She rolled her eyes, choosing to eat her chicken instead of arguing with the blonde.

Hinata's eyes widened with every word the pinkette told her.

"Sakura-chan I-I'm so sorry."

Sakura shrugged, "I should've known, it was too good to be true."

Hinata didn't understand why Sasuke had been so cruel with her friend when Naruto told her that Sasuke had developed feelings for the pinkette and was looking for a way to tell her without hurting her.

She furrowed her eyebrows, debating on whether she should voice out her thoughts. Sure Sakura would be upset that she had kept this from her, but maybe Naruto's input could help piece things together.

"I-I h-have to c-confess something very i-important, S-Sakura-chan."

Tenten smiled sheepishly at the Hyuuga, "Hey!"

Neji only glanced up to acknowledge her but went back to reading his book.

The brunette flopped down on the unoccupied chair, knowing that he was probably upset because she had bailed on him, "Are we good for tomorrow morning?"

It was as if he didn't hear her because he continued reading his book without glancing up a second time.

She scooted her chair next to him, the bottom of the chair scraping noisily.

He sighed, closing his book and placing it on the table.

She smiled sheepishly again, "Sorry."

"I'm s-so sorry Sakura-chan, Na-Naruto-kun told me Sasuke-kun was t-trying to find a way to t-tell you because he didn't want to h-hurt you."

The pinkette could only nod because it wasn't Hinata's fault. She wasn't the one who made a bet.

"Don't worry about it Hina," She offered a small smile, resting her head on her friend's shoulder, "It wasn't your fault."

"I-I would have t-told you if I knew h-he was planning on hurting you, I-I should've p-put you f-first Sakura-chan."

Sakura shook her head in disagreement, "There's nothing you could've done to make it better."

The dark haired heiress smiled at the reassuring squeeze Sakura gave her hand.

"I'll be damned if I let Uchiha ruin my friendships too."

They were nearing the end of the week and Fugaku couldn't say he hated Sasuke's sudden obedience. It was as if Sasuke was finally over his rebellious teen phase.

Looking at his son though, he knew something must've influenced his behavior and he couldn't help but wonder what caused his sudden change, or rather who.

Sasuke leaned his head back against the seat, they were traveling to Oto and he might've agreed to campaign with his father, but that didn't mean he was going to let himself get sucked back into politic talk again.

"Son," Fugaku called out, demanding his heir's attention, knowing full well that Sasuke was not sleeping, "How's school? I haven't talked to Tsunade in a while, but I trust you'll update me?"

Sasuke sluggishly opened his eyes, "Hn, exams are coming up."

His mother smiled at him, "I'm sure you'll do great honey, don't stress too much." She reassured.

"I'm not worried, you've never given me reason to doubt your intellectual capabilities," He stated proudly, "At least in school that is." He added.

"Of course." the young Uchiha agreed, not in the mood to argue with his father, he had other things to worry about.

Fugaku studied him, noticing there wasn't a trace of defiance in his expression.

The stiff silence remained upon them for what seemed like ages before Sasuke assumed that he could go back to rest, so he closed his eyes ready to actually take a nap, but before he could even drift off his father spoke again.

"Itachi never worried much about exams as much as you do." He started off, "Of course, he is a prodigy so things come naturally to him. He didn't have to try so hard."

Sasuke's eyes hardened at the mention of his brother.

Fugaku nearly smirked, There it is.

"Fugaku!" Mikoto interfered, "There's no need to compare them when our boys are two different people."

"'Two different people'? Please Mikoto, not with Sasuke copying every single thing Itachi accomplished like an exact replica of him." He turned to Sasuke, "Be a little more original, son."

Sasuke could only grit his teeth because his father was right, everything Itachi accomplished, he would follow like a lost puppy with no purpose but to follow suit.

"Enough! I've had enough of you belittling Sasuke for anything he accomplished through petty comparisons! Don't you see the strain you've caused to his relationship with Itachi, Fugaku?"

Fugaku could only scowl at his wife, "I think Sasuke is old enough to speak for himself, don't you think Sasuke?"

Sasuke restrained himself from glaring at his father, "Yes, father."

"Good. So tell me-"

"Fugaku, stop this, unless you want tomorrow's headlines to be about how the respectable family-oriented Fugaku Uchiha showed up to a campaign rally without his family." Mikoto stated firmly without any sort of fear in her tone.

"Mom, don't."

"Finally, something intelligent comes out of your mouth today, Sasuke. I was beginning to worry."

"I swear to-"

"To what Mikoto?" He challenged, "I'm beginning to see where he got his flare from."

She glared at her husband, "I don't make empty threats, Fugaku, you should know this by now." She hissed as the car came to a stop, "Honey, we're leaving." She urged, looking at her son with concerned eyes. She knew both of her sons like the back of her hand and didn't miss the way Sasuke had been throughout the week.

Sasuke hesitated, he knew all hell would break loose if he defied his father, but he also knew he would break his mom's heart if he didn't support her attempts to defend him.

He sighed, following his mom out of the car where she turned back to face her husband, "And don't try to stop us."

Sakura tied up her combat boots just like she tied her hair in a ponytail. Another day of stupid classes.

At least I have a couple days before I see his stupid face, she thought bitterly. This past week had served her well, she had come to terms with the fact that Sasuke was a jerk and he didn't deserve any sort of compassion.

So what if I was keeping tabs on him, she decided, It was for his own well being. She was sure Itachi only wanted to know about Sasuke because he was worried about him, and she had nothing to feel guilty about.

"You ready?" Tenten asked, swinging on her backpack. The brunette was well aware of the situation after she questioned her three roommates about what was going on. Needless to say, she was pissed, ready to beat the crap out of the Uchiha, but Sakura said that was her job.

Nodding, the pinkette closed her liquid eyeliner, inspecting her masterpiece in the mirror, "Ready." she grinned.

And with that, they headed down to the cafeteria.

"Hyuuga was being extra annoying and made Lee run laps all practice yesterday." Tenten complained, recalling how he had reacted once she told him why she hadn't gone on their usual run with him, "Poor Lee-kun was a sweaty mess by the end of it."

Sakura laughed, Tenten was such an oblivious wreck, "I bet."

"I swear he has to chill sometimes, you know the team was suggesting he take some anger management class and he walked off the field," Tenten recalled, "Apparently he went to check if the bleachers were in use," she explained, "They weren't." she deadpanned, "And he had us do 100 sets of bleachers!"

Smiling, Sakura served herself some breakfast from the buffet style counters, "Oh yeah?"

"Yeah, thankfully he needed something from the equipment room so he sent me to get it and I didn't have to do them."

Raising her eyebrows in amusement, the pinkette nodded, "Lucky you."

"I know right!" the brunette exclaimed, filling up her cup of water.

They spotted Hinata and Ino eating breakfast with Sai and Ami.

"Morning," the pink haired girl greeted, taking the open seat next to Sai, Tenten followed suit, sitting next to her and Ami.

Ami smiled sheepishly at Sakura, fiddling with the hem of her skirt before turning her gaze back to her food.

"Sakura-san! I didn't know people could get dark eye bags on their eyelids," Sai commented, looking at the dark eye make-up she had surrounding her green orbs.

Ino smacked him, "Sai! Those aren't eye bags you jerk! Not even close." She scolded.

Sakura only laughed, she never really took anything Sai said to heart, he was just a clueless puppy.

"I-I really like y-your make-up today S-Sakura-chan." Hinata mustered, admiring the detail of Sakura's make-up.

"Thanks Hina, I can give you a tutorial if you want-"

"I'm sure Hinata isn't interested in like a hooker this early in the day."

Sakura glared up at the red-head, "Seriously, who invited you into this private conversation?"

Smiling smugly Karin gritted her teeth before looking at Ami, "Let's go?"

Ami nodded, picking up her stuff and following the red-head, "Thanks for breakfast, girls a-and Sai." she blushed, "See you in-"

"Ami!" Karin urged the purple haired girl, turning angrily and almost bumped into an older woman, "Watch where you're-!" she started grumbling venomously before her jaw nearly dropped, "M-Mikoto-san! I didn't know you were on campus today!"

Sakura's curiosity grew, wondering who this beautiful woman was and why Karin's demeanor changed in a matter of seconds.

Hinata saw Sakura's confused expression, and mouthed, 'Sasuke's mom'.

The regal looking woman smiled politely at the abrasive red-head, recognizing her as one of Sasuke's friends, "Ah, Karin was it?"

Nodding her head vigorously, "The one and only." She replied with a suddenly different aura from the one she had just a couple seconds ago, "Are you having breakfast right now?"

Mikoto nodded distractedly, looking at the table behind Karin, smiling at some familiar faces and others that were new, "Yes, I'm waiting on Sasuke, he went to put away his luggage," she explained briefly before walking towards Ino and Hinata, "Oh, look at you girls! You've grown up so beautifully!" she exclaimed before hugging the two girls.

"And you're still beautiful as always, Mikoto-san!" Ino complimented back, it was as if the woman didn't age, she definitely had to get her skincare secrets one day.

"You're too kind! Send your parents my regards, I haven't seen them in ages." She told them.

"O-Of course," Hinata nodded.

Karin gaped at them, they were literally hijacking her plan to have breakfast with her soon to be mother-in-law.

Ino caught a glimpse of Karin's expression, her friend needed to be knocked down a peg or two, "Oh where are my manners!" the blonde exclaimed, "I haven't introduced you to the best people I've met thus far!" she charmed.

"Mikoto-san was actually going to have breakfast right now, Ino." Karin smiled a sickeningly sweet one, surely one that meant she would kill the blonde if she ruined her plans with Mikoto even further, "We should sit-"

"Oh, is that so?" Ino wondered, effectively cutting off the red-head, "Then sit with us, Mikoto-san! I insist."

Sakura nearly choked on her tea, the blonde would be the death of her, seriously.

"Oh dear, I couldn't possibly disrupt you and your friends."

"We insist," the blonde pushed. Hinata gave her a confused look, but fortunately Mikoto didn't see it.

Karin glared at the blonde, but Ino only smiled.

"Ah, then who am I to reject such an offer?" she smiled, ready to sit down next to Tenten, but the brunette stood up before Mikoto could sit down.

"You could take my seat, I wish I could stay but I gotta run, Captain just texted he needs help with some strategies for the upcoming game," She offered a smile and started her way towards the exit.

"That was Tenten, total athlete as you could probably tell." Ino briefly described, before turning to Sai and introducing him, finally settling her gaze on the pinkette she smiled, "And this is Sakura Haruno, the best person I've met this year!"

Smiling politely, the pinkette extended her hand, "Nice to meet you Mikoto-san."

Mikoto quickly studied the pink-haired girl, taking her hand and pulling her into an embrace instead, "Oh aren't you the cutest!"

Sakura's eyes widened in shock, she wasn't expecting a sudden act of affection from someone related to the ice-prince himself.

Ino stifled a laugh, satisfied with Sakura's clear discomfort and Karin's evident fury.

Karin huffed, biting back her anger and forced another of her fake smiles, "W-well it was nice seeing you again Mikoto-san!" She tried, earning herself a smile of acknowledgement from Mikoto once she released the pinkette.

"Of course, dear," she dismissed.

Nodding Karin turned to leave with Ami, spotting Sasuke making his way into the cafeteria. Smirking she made her way towards him, surely he wouldn't want to sit with Sakura.

"Sasuke-kun," she purred, placing her hands on his shoulders.

"Have you seen my mom?" he asked curtly, it was too early for this shit.

She nodded, "You won't believe who she's having breakfast with." she murmured pulling him down from his loose uniform tie.

"Who?" he asked in a bored tone.

"Sakura Haruno." she whispered in his ear before pulling back and directing her gaze to their table, letting Sasuke follow her gaze until it landed on the pinkette who was smiling sheepishly at whatever his mother was telling her, unaware that she had just witnessed the intimate interaction between him and the red-haired.
