Chapter 20 - Sealed with a Kiss

Annabeth's POV

The moment I walked out the emergency room, someone threw their arms around me.

"Hey, hey, not so tight." Someone gently told off the person hugging me but there was a hint of amusement in their voice.

"We were so worried about you." The person said, hugging me tighter.

I tried to look around and saw Nico looking at the both of us with a close lipped smile on his face.

"Who knows, maybe she still has some vomit on her." Nico joked.

This got Thalia to let go of me almost immediately. She wiped her cheeks with the sleeves of her shirt as she stepped aside. Nico moved closer to me and hugged me. He wrapped one arm around my waist and placed his other hand on the back of my head. I felt his fingers bury themselves in my hair, making my ponytail loose. He took a deep breath.

"Hey, stupid, you just hugged her after you told me she's covered in vomit." Thalia said, rubbing hand sanitizer on her arms.

"I don't care." Nico said against my head then planted a kiss on my temple. "Thank the gods you're okay."

He let go of me and I surveyed the hall. Beckendorf was there and so was Silena, who looked like she just woke up and rushed to the hospital. She looked gorgeous nonetheless. They were standing behind Nico and Thalia with looks that resembled the feeling of having the weight of the world off their shoulders.

"If only I knew this would be a mini get together, I should have dressed better." I tried to lighten up the mood.

"Don't you dare joke about this. Beckendorf woke me up, calling to tell me that you collapsed and he didn't know who else to call." Silena's face softened. "But praise the gods you're okay."

I looked over to Beckendorf and he had an apologetic expression. "I didn't know who to call or who your emergency contact is. I know exercise-induced nausea is a common thing for people who train and exercise but I just had to make sure you didn't have any pre-existing conditions that might have caused the vomiting and fainting."

I smiled at him. "Thank you for what you did, Beckendorf."

Silena wrapped her hands around Beckendorf's arm and beamed proudly at her boyfriend. Everyone looked like they could finally let out the breaths they were holding.

"Come on, let's get you home." Nico said as he placed his arm on my shoulders.

I looked at the doors to the emergency room and saw Percy peeking at us. With a timid smile on my face, I gave him a small wave before we walked towards the exit. Silena and Beckendorf left together while the three of us got in Nico's car. They made me sit at the back like a kid and as Nico drove, he would glance at me from time to time.

Honestly, I really feel loved and cared for by my friends.

When we got back to my building, Karl greeted me and handed me a box. He said that the delivery person left the package with him since it wouldn't fit in my mail locker.

If only this was delivered earlier, the whole going to the hospital episode wouldn't have happened.

Nico prepared a cup of tea for me once we got in my unit. I scoped my loft and it looked like someone got interrupted while eating breakfast and the other got up from bed and went straight out the door. Knowing the both of them, I can tell that it was Thalia eating breakfast and Nico whose sleep was interrupted.

"You should relax." Thalia said as she sat down on the kitchen island to resume eating. "Take a long bath. Nap. And fine, bake pastries if you want."

I heard Nico chuckle and a smile slowly spread across my face. "I'll just take a bath and since I got your permission, be prepared to feast on pastries."

I drew a hot bath. Made it extra bubbly too. I lit up a couple scented candles and got settled with my Kindle while Onion kept me company.

"Knock knock." Somebody said and peeped through the crack of the door.

"Nico!" Thank the gods for the extra bubbles.

"I made you tea."

"Oh yeah! Come in." I placed my Kindle on the windowsill and sank deeper into the tub.

He went in and handed me my tea.

"You guys spoil me too much." I said before taking a sip then placing the cup beside my Kindle.

"After what happened today, I think we better keep an eye on you more. You better relax. Don't overthink things. I know you." He studied my face.

I rolled my eyes. "Okay, mom."

"Enjoy your bath." He said as he made his way to the door.

"Wait!" I called out. "Stay with me."

He went back and sat down on the floor beside the tub. We talked for a while before Thalia's head appeared by the open door.

"I thought I lost another cousin to you, Annabeth." Thalia joke as she sat down beside Nico.

The water turned warm to lukewarm to cold as we stayed in the bathroom, talking for what felt like hours. The last time I stayed this long in a bath was a week ago, when I got home from Percy's. I smiled to myself. At least that ugly memory could be replaced by a fun one with Thalia and Nico laughing on the floor as they kept me company.

"Come on, time to get out of the tub, wrinkles." Nico said as he helped Thalia stand up.

I smiled. "I'll be out in a while."

The both of them left me and I rinsed myself. I got dressed and joined them outside. It was late in the morning. Thalia was watching some reruns of Forensic Files with Onion on the couch while Nico ate his brunch in the kitchen, watching as well. I prepared another cup of tea for myself and sat down on the kitchen counter as my tea steeped. I looked around and I noticed something was missing. I left Percy's wedding invitation somewhere in the kitchen earlier this morning but it was nowhere to be found now. Not that I wanted to see it again but I knew I'd have to come in contact with it soon.

"What are you planning to bake today?" Nico asked, looking away from the television.

"Hmm, just some old-fashioned cookies. Do you have any requests?" I smiled at him. "How about you, Thalia?" I called out.

"Biscotti!" Nico eagerly requested.

"When I said old fashioned cookies, I meant like chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter, raisin, and the likes." I put my hand on my hip.

"Well, technically it is an old-fashioned Italian cookie. Come on, I'll help you and even give you the recipe."

I gave in. "Alright. Thalia?"

"Hmm, chocolate chip please!"

I started with Nico's request because it required baking the pastry twice. Once it was already in the oven for the second time, I started with the chocolate chip cookie batter. I gathered the ingredients from my pantry and stared at one particular ingredient: blue food coloring. I made up my mind and grabbed it. I made two batches of cookies: regular and blue.

Thalia went over just as I was adding blue food coloring to the second cookie batter. Nico eyed me and then glanced at Thalia. They stared at each other for a moment and I can tell what they were thinking.

"I'm being mature." I announced. "See this as if I were reaching out an olive branch. I am making peace. With him. And with myself."

Nico placed his arm over my shoulders and brought me closer to him. "Good on you."

Thalia placed her hand over mine as I realized I was whisking a bit more vigorously than needed.

"Before you hand over your peace offering, may I have a moment with him and your pager?" She asked with a small smile on her face.

My grip on the whisk and bowl slackened as I laughed, leaning against Nico.

After the cookies were done baking, cooled, and in containers, I sat down on the floor in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of the living room. I watched the scenery in front of me. The clouds. The cityscape. The people. The cars.

"What are you doing?" Thalia asked me.

"People watching."

She let it go. It was partly true. I was also thinking of how I'll contact Percy and tell him I come in peace. With knitted eyebrows, I was dumbfounded. Talking to Percy used to be so easy. Nico gave me a new cup of tea and placed a blanket over my shoulders and a kiss on top of my head. He just knew when I needed to relax.

I reached for my phone and took a deep breath, mustering up all my courage. I stared at the cursor as it blinked, waiting for me to type in my message for Percy.

Be the bigger person, Annabeth.

Is there anything I can help with in the wedding?

I pressed send as soon as I finished the sentence to avoid second thoughts and backing out. I clutched my phone tightly in my hand and brought it to my chest. It felt like an eternity before I heard a sound, notifying me that I had a message. I took a deep breath and checked it.

Let's have dinner. Mom and Paul miss you.

I let out the breath I was holding. I didn't know how to feel. Elated that we were on our way to fix our friendship. Dismayed that I had to come in face to face contact with him too soon. Nervous that having dinner immediately would still be awkward. I finished the warm tea Nico gave me, hoping it would calm me down.

I got up and put my mug away before sitting down with Nico and Thalia and watching Forensic Files with them. For all I know, Nico was the one who chose what to watch.

As each episode passed, the more at wit's end I would get. The living room took on a dark orange hue as the sun was setting. Dinner with Percy's parents are always scheduled at six-thirty.

"I'm having dinner at Mr. and Mrs. Blofis's tonight." I stated. "You guys should come with!"

"Hmm, sounds like you and Percy are already sorting things out." Thalia said. "Do you still need us here?"

"Yes!" I looked at the both of them with pleading eyes.

"Well, if that's the case, then we better get new clothes from our apartments." Thalia smiled.

"You can do your laundry here." I said with a small voice.

"Hey, we're not going anywhere, alright?" Nico comforted me by rubbing my back gently.

"My colleagues would notice I'd be wearing the same clothes from last week." Thalia reasoned.

"Yeah, because we have a washing machine. Duh." I teased, making Nico chuckle and Thalia roll her eyes at me.

"We'll take a raincheck on that dinner, Annabeth." Thalia sighed.

I accepted defeat and started to get ready for dinner. Since it was just a casual dinner, I wore the first clothes my hand would touch: a loose black shirt and black denim jeans. I was deciding whether I should put on some makeup or not. I mean, I was only going to have dinner with Percy's family and head back home afterwards. On the other hand, I wanted to feel confident and to quote Silena "saying that that schmuck didn't affect you".

"Well, aren't we in mourning?" Thalia noted as I made my way downstairs to the living room.

I looked at what I was wearing and shrugged. "I'll just say that Nico's fashion rubbed off on me." I winked at Nico.

He had a smirk on his face as he nodded approvingly.

I packed some pastries for Mr. and Mrs. Blofis in containers and placed it in a canvas bag along with Percy's blue chocolate chip cookies. After making sure Onion had enough food and water, the three of us left the building. Nico first dropped off Thalia and we made our way to Mr. and Mrs. Blofis's building.

As we neared our destination, it started to drizzle. Nico parked the car beside Percy's. Percy stood outside the building, probably waiting for me. I was starting to get anxious.

Nico shrugged off his aviator jacket and handed it to me. "I know you get cold easily."

I smiled at him and wore his jacket. "Wish me luck."

"Always do." He smiled back and gave me cheek kisses before I exited his car.

I ran to the building entrance, greeted Percy with a hello, and waved at Nico as he drove away. No words followed our hello hi exchange. We made our way up the stairs in utter silence.

"Hello! Come in!" Mrs. Blofis greeted us as she opened the door. "Come here, Annabeth. I missed you so much!" She pulled me into a hug once we stepped in.

"Good to see you too, Mrs. Blofis. It's been a while!" I hugged her back.

"I've told you before and I'm telling you again, call me Sally." She let go of me, held me in front of her, and smiled. "You look gorgeous as ever. Maybe even more so." She must have noticed the makeup.

She hugged Percy as well and made us wait in the living room as they finish preparing dinner. I offered to help just so I wouldn't be in another awkward situation with Percy but she insisted that we both stay put.

I sat down on my usual spot and fidgeted with whatever I can on Nico's jacket. Percy sat down on a different chair instead of his spot beside me. He was looking down at his hands as he played with his fingers.

"So, uhm, it's good that you're feeling better." He started.

"Yeah, kind of gave everyone a fright there a while ago." I nervously laughed.

"Yeah, you did." He chuckled and slowly nodded.

There was a moment of silence before he said. "You've lost some weight."

"Have I? I mean I've been working out again but I think I'm just gaining it right back with Nico around."

I looked at him and he still looked horrible. Pale. Bags underneath his eyes. Tired sea green eyes that refuse to meet mine. Long disheveled jet black hair. A couple day's worth of stubble. He looked thinner too.

"Dinner's ready." Sally called.

The both of us gave each other an awkward smile as we got up. Mr. Blofis greeted me with a hug as I entered the kitchen.

"Dinner looks scrumptious - "

"Paul." Mr. Blofis interrupted me. "I had a feeling you were going to call me Mr. Blofis even after all these years."

I gave him a toothy grin. "Dinner looks scrumptious, Paul."

"Better." He smiled back.

We got seated and despite not being here for a couple weeks, I felt like I belonged. It was very homey and having spent most of my time here growing up, I did consider this as my home. Paul, Sally, and Percy lived here but there was always a fourth seat for me.

"It's good to finally have you over here again, Annabeth. Percy said that you've been really busy." Sally started. "With work and all the wedding preparations."

I felt my stomach sink at the mention of the wedding. I looked at Percy, whose lips were in a tight line. He has been covering up for me. He knew I couldn't say no to dinner with Sally and Paul and knew I needed some space after everything that happened. Besides, helping with the wedding was the last thing I wanted to do. But that was for the previous weeks. I'm being the bigger person here, right?

"Yeah, work has been busy." I lied.

She took a good look at me. "I can tell. You look stressed."

Percy agreed, making me glare at him. "Well, you look worse." I retorted.

"Hey!"

"She's not wrong though." Paul joined in.

I smiled at Paul, appreciating that he was on my side. "Ha! See!"

"Well, I'm not the one who was rushed to the ER a while ago." He said with a smug look on his face because he knew he won.

This immediately stopped the bickering. Sally and Paul looked at me and suddenly a pea on my plate looked very interesting.

Percy cleared his throat, in preparation to tell them about the ER encounter. "It was early morning, around 8 in the morning. The time people are usually still asleep since it's Sunday and people sleep in on the weekends."

I rolled my eyes but smiled.

"I was in the hospital because, unfortunately, we were understaffed as per my appearance. Sunday, my favorite day of the week," he paused to glance at me and continued, "was spent in the ER and in a state of absolute sleep deprivation and caffeine dependency."

Sally asked with an amused smile. "Percy, can you just go straight to the point?"

"I'm painting the scene!" He looked at Paul for assurance to which Paul nodded to.

"I was going around the ER when I heard someone enter, explaining to a nurse what had happened. I checked who it was because the voice was familiar. It was Silena's boyfriend. I walked over to check what he was doing in the ER and everything seemed to slow down when I saw that he was carrying an unconscious Annabeth. It felt like my heart stopped and I couldn't breathe. It was a scene I would never want to see again." Percy looked at me with soft but pained eyes.

For the first time, we locked eyes and stared at each other. I took a ragged breath. Seeing how much Percy cared for me made me feel guilty for avoiding him.

"It was hard having to imagine what Beckendorf went through having to carry Annabeth to the hospital all the way from Central Park." He joked to lighten the mood, causing me to playfully hit his arm. "I got Annabeth out of his arms and carried her to an empty bed. She suffered exercise-induced nausea and was discharged once she woke up."

"Exercise-induced nausea?" Paul asked.

Percy quickly discussed the possible causes of it.

"Maybe you should stay here for a while and relax." Sally said.

"Mom, she's a grown adult. I bet she can handle herself and would know how to relax." Percy said.

"You're just jealous that she didn't offer you the same thing." I joked.

"Yeah, Mom!" Percy looked at her with knitted eyebrows. "I'm your son and I don't get the same treatment."

We laughed for a while and I teased in a small voice. "But you still look worse than I do."

"Hey!" Percy exclaimed.

"She has a point." Sally joined me.

"See they both agree with me." I gave him a triumphant look.

"I told you, we're understaffed." Percy rolled his eyes.

"No, I think the wedding is starting to get to you." Sally pointed out.

I nervously gulped. Guilt started to seep in deeper because I should be helping him with his wedding preparation. I was his best woman for gods sakes!

"Maybe you should just reschedule it." Sally offered.

"He already sent out the invitations." I said softly, almost sounding like a whisper. "I received it this morning."

Percy's face fell as, I think, he put the pieces together to what happened leading up to me being rushed to the ER. I wanted to keep it a secret from him but I slipped. Letting him know that those invitations affected me the way it did was the last thing I wanted.

"Rachel wants a big wedding. Sending all the guests a memo about moving our wedding would be too much of a hassle." He sighed.

"Maybe hire a wedding assistant." Paul suggested.

Percy just nodded and continued eating. Once our meal was finished, I announced that I brought desserts. I excused myself as I went back to the living room to retrieve the containers filled with pastries.

"Annabeth." Someone called my attention.

I turned around and saw that Percy followed me. "Yes?"

"Annabeth, I - "

"Don't worry about it." I interrupted him and gave him a smile.

He didn't say anything else so I continued to get my pastries. I felt my phone buzz in the pocket of my jeans so I checked the message. It was from Nico, asking me if he should fetch me after our dinner. I looked up at Percy who still had the unreadable expression on his face.

"What's that?" He asked.

"Oh, Nico was just asking if he should fetch me after dinner." I answered.

He scoffed. "What? Nonsense. I'll drive you home."

"Alright then." I smiled again, sent Nico a quick reply, and made my way back to the kitchen.

Paul and Sally brewed some coffee as I readied my baked goods. I had some croissants, cookies, brownies, and more. Percy joined us a couple moments later. We had dessert as we talked a bit more.

We left the apartment around ten in the evening. We bid our goodbyes with Sally hugging me longer than usual, saying that she missed me so much. Percy and I made our way down and got into his car. It was quiet and awkward once again as he drove me back to my building.

I'm being the bigger person. The biggest person I've ever been.

After taking a deep breath, I asked Percy once again. "Is there anything I can help with in the wedding?"

I was met with silence.

"Your mom said that the wedding is starting to get to you and I haven't been doing great as your best woman." I said as I started pulling on the cuffs of Nico's jacket.

"Annabeth, are you sure?" He looked over at me.

"Unless you want to look that horrible at your wedding, I can help out with the preparations." I didn't dare meet his gaze cause I know I'd break.

"Annabeth."

"I'm fine, Percy, I can handle the added work." I quickly faced him and gave him a smile.

"Well, if you're a hundred percent sure - "

"Why wouldn't I be?" I interjected.

He sighed. "Well, I could really use your help. There are just so many things to do. Aside from that, the hospital is understaffed until gods know when."

"Didn't you guys hire a wedding planner especially for this reason?"

"We did. And a wedding assistant. But Rachel wants this huge wedding with maybe more than two hundred people invited."

"Oof. That's going to be rough." I wrinkled my nose. I know how much Percy prefers small intimate events rather than big extravagant ones. Maybe he's agreeing with Rachel to make up for...

We slowed down as he neared my building. Percy parked the car and turned off the engine. He shifted in his seat so that he was facing me.

"Annabeth, I'm really sorry for everything." He said with utmost sincerity.

Every once in a while, the head lights of the incoming traffic would momentarily shine on his eyes. There was so much emotion in his eyes. I just wanted to hug him to make it all go away.

"I'm sorry too." It came out as a whisper.

It felt like a couple moments before I looked away from his eyes. I took out the container of his blue chocolate chip cookies from the bag and handed it to him.

I opened the door and before I got out, I smiled and said. "Consider that as my olive branch."

I went straight inside my building, towards the elevator, and didn't even wait for him to drive away. I pressed the button of my floor and waited. I unlocked the door and was met by an overly excited Onion. It looked like Nico and Thalia weren't back yet. I sat on the floor to play with Onion for a bit and then decided to change my clothes for comfy pajamas.

I sat on my bed. The dinner went pretty alright, right? Better keep my mind busy.

I went over to my desk and opened up the case files that Mom made me get. I groaned because there was so much. I grabbed one of the folders and tried to read what was inside it. I groaned once again. It was a Sunday anyway. Who does work on a Sunday?

I went downstairs, got myself a glass of wine, and watched Forensic Files.

I was through with a couple episodes when the door opened and Nico and Thalia went in with their bags.

"Hey! Hey! Are you watching Forensic Files without me?" Nico called out as he made his way to the couch.

"Oops." I made a face.

He laughed and greeted me with the usual cheek kisses. He sat down beside me and watched as I scrambled to the episode where he left off. Gods, he really loved this series.

"How was dinner?" Thalia asked as she got herself and Nico a glass of wine.

"It was alright." I answered. "I got reinstated as the best woman. All is good."

"That's good to hear. So I guess we'll be seeing more of Percy again." She said as she handed Nico his glass of wine and sat down with us.

"Yeah, I don't know. I intend to run the errands by myself or with you guys. We might be at peace with each other but I still want to keep my distance."

"Understandable." Nico nodded.

"Did you guys know that they have around two hundred guests for their wedding?" I asked.

"Eugh." Nico made a face.

"Maybe I'll take a rain check on their wedding." Thalia rolled her eyes.

I laughed. Both of them weren't fans of a big crowd. Actually, I think all of us don't like big crowds. I smiled to myself. Looks like things were going back to normal.

With the new case my mother was handing me in mind, I went to bed early. Thalia followed me after a couple minutes and when I asked about Nico, she said that he was absolutely hooked on Forensic Files.

I woke up and there was no smell of coffee. I got up and got ready for my morning exercise and run. I brought Onion along with me to Central Park to get him to exercise too. Beckendorf was already there when I arrived. He watched over me and even ran beside me.

"I promise no more exercise-induced nausea." I told him once we were cooling down.

"I can never be too careful." He shrugged.

I said goodbye to him as Onion and I walked back home. The smell of coffee greeted me as I entered my loft.

"Good morning!" Thalia greeted me.

"Morning." I greeted back and removed Onion's leash. He bounded excitedly towards Thalia, went to his water bowl, and lied down.

Thalia handed me a cup of coffee as I went to the kitchen to get a glass of water.

"Can I just keep you guys here?" I asked after I thanked her for the coffee.

"Hmm, tempting offer but what happens to us if Luke comes over?" She asked as she filled the waffle maker with batter. "Your loft doesn't really have rooms for privacy."

I smiled. "Better invest in some good ear plugs and sleeping masks."

Thalia laughed and then noted. "Speaking of Luke, you haven't opened the package given to you yesterday."

"Oh yeah!" I excitedly retrieved my care package from Luke and opened it.

Hot chocolate from Belgium and France. Coffee from Hawaii and Jamaica. Tea from China and Japan. Perfumes from France. Knickknacks, souvenirs, and postcards from different places.

"I say he's a keeper." Thalia said as she peeped over my shoulder.

"I know." I sighed in contentment. "I love him."

I went back to the kitchen to have breakfast before getting ready for work. Today, I wore a plain black shirt, jeans, flats, and threw on one of Luke's blazer. After putting on some makeup, I spritz on some perfume that Luke sent. While hauling all the paperwork for the case file Mom gave me, I said goodbye to Thalia and headed to work.

"Morning, Drew!" I greeted her as I passed by.

"Ooh, I love your outfit!" She said, following me inside my office.

"Thanks!" I sat down behind my desk. "I don't have to go to court today, right?"

"Nope, but you do have a meeting with your mother later by 9." She smiled.

"How about this week?"

She handed me my schedule for this week. "Just two trips later this week."

I sighed in relief. "Okay, that's good." I glanced down at my schedule.

Drew exited my office and I tried to look over the case file once again. It's a Monday. I'm in my office. I have no excuse to put this aside again. I got a pen and started jotting down notes. Ten minutes before nine, I brought my notebook and pen and went to my mother's office. I sat down in front of her table and waited for her to acknowledge me.

"What do you think about the case?" She asked me after a while and we started discussing.

I left her office, determined to learn more about the case and read materials that could help. I cleared my table and stacked up the books and other materials I needed for the two cases I'll be present in court for. Better get those out of the way before barreling straight to the new case I got.

I looked up from the book I was reading and realized that it was already our lunch break. Maybe I should stay in for lunch. I swiveled my chair so I was facing the window. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, which was the exact same time my phone rang.

"Percy?" I answered.

"Hey, are you busy today?" He asked me.

"I'm quite busy today. Why?"

"I was kind of hoping you could help me out." He paused. "With some wedding stuff."

I didn't want to feel this way but my stomach sank. "Oh."

"Uhm, I'm really swamped here in the hospital. Rachel gave me this task and I already somewhat messed up already."

"What is it? Maybe I could squeeze it in my schedule." I eyes the stack of reading materials and made a face.

"I need to check with Hermes Express if all the wedding invitations are sent out. Apparently, there was one batch that was just sent out. It was a good thing that all the recipients are sure goers. They say it's proper wedding etiquette to send out the invitations six to eight weeks before the wedding but that one batch was sent two weeks before the wedding." He sighed.

"Who are the sure goers?"

"People part of the wedding ceremony."

"Oh." The wedding was nearer that I thought. To be honest, I stopped reading when I realized it was their wedding invitation.

"Doctor Jackson, we need you in wing 4A." I heard the intercom in the background.

"You better go." I said.

"Yeah, I should. I'll talk to you later."

I hesitated before saying. "Go save lives for me."

He chuckled. "Alright." He said with a smile in his voice.

"Bye, Percy." I said softly.

"Bye, Annabeth." He replied with the same tone.

He stayed on the line and so did I. I didn't want to hang up just yet. It was a good kind of silence and a feeling of comfort, knowing that he's just there.

"Doctor Jackson, we need you in wing 4A." The intercom repeated.

"Go!" I smiled.

"I'm going, I'm going." He chuckled.

I hung up first so he can go ahead. I leaned back in my chair and sighed. Time to be the trusted best woman. I searched Hermes Express's customer service number and had a lengthy conversation with the representative. Once reassured that all of their wedding invitations are sent, I messaged Percy that everything was alright and went back to work.

"Annabeth!" Someone called me in a singsong voice.

I looked up and saw Thalia enter my office with a paper bag.

"What are you doing here?" I smiled.

"I saw the paperwork you were carrying when you left a while ago. I thought you'd be staying in for lunch so I brought you some."

"That's very thoughtful of you."

"We don't want another fainting Annabeth."

I groaned. "I told you guys that's not going to happen again. I promise." I made a cross on my chest where my heart was.

"We can never be too sure." She said with a tune.

"Aren't you busy at work?" I asked as I started eating.

"So-so. It's a slow day today at the office. Quite the opposite of what you have here."

"This is a slow day actually."

"Wouldn't want to have your job then." She scrunched her nose.

Thalia left once we finished our coffee after our lunch. I made sure that by today, I should've polished both of my cases with court hearings this week and started on my new case. When Drew left and so did Mom, I closed the folder I was currently reading and sighed. My phone notified me that someone was trying to video call me. I scrambled to check who it was and smiled.

Comfort and warmth washed over me when I saw his face on my phone. He was moving around the room while still holding his phone. He probably didn't notice that I already answered the call. It looked like he was drawing the curtains close. He glanced down at his phone and was surprised.

"Hi." He breathed and smiled goofily.

"Hi." I replied just as breathily.

We didn't say anything for a moment and just stared at each other, memorizing every detail of each other's faces. Gods, I missed this man.

Luke was wearing his pilot uniform and his hair was styled and suave. His name badge and qualification badge, wings with a star enclosed in a laurel wreath, shiny and pinned properly on his blazer and not a single strand of hair out of place. Seeing him in his uniform always made me swoon. Despite the smile on his face, he looked tired. It looked like wherever he was, it was still day time.

"Tsukare teru mitaidesu ne." He broke the silence.

Looks like I know where he is.

I was taken aback for a moment before answering. "Chotto."

Luke realized he talked to me in Nihongo and laughed. "You understood that?"

I smiled and scrunched my face. I showed my thumb and index finger, gesturing how small. "Chotto."

The expression on his face made my heart do somersaults. It was a combination of amusement, amazement, pride, and love. If only it were possible to jump through the screen to physically be with him.

"What time is it there in Japan?"

"Almost eight in the morning. I just arrived at the hotel, fresh from the flight."

"Are you jet lagged?"

"Very." He chuckled. "I just wanted to see you before I go to bed."

I blushed and then offered. "You can get ready for bed if you want."

"Thank you." He mouthed.

He placed his phone on a table but made sure that I could still see him as he moved around the room. He continued drawing the curtains close so no sunlight would get into the room.

"I got your package by the way. Just opened it this morning." I said as I watched him. "I was about to send you an e-mail. Thank you for the care package. Very well received."

"Are Thalia and Nico still staying with you?" He asked as he unbuttoned his blazer and shrugged it off, showing his dress shirt's epaulets with four stripes, similar to the stripes on his blazer arms.

"Yeah. So very well received." I laughed.

He went near his phone to take a good look at my face. "Well received by them or by you?"

"By all of us!" I smiled. "But I really do love it."

"I guess it's a good thing I filled packed that care package then." He shrugged and proceeded to loosen his tie by pulling it.

"How long are you staying in Japan?"

"Just a couple days then I fly off to Australia." He removed his cuff links, making him glance at his watch. "Wait, why are you still at your office?"

"You must be good with the time zones to know what time it is here that quick." I was shocked.

He smiled. "I keep my watch in New York's time zone."

"What? Why? Why don't you synchronize it with where you are?"

"Cause New York is where you are, dummy."

I blushed. "You're real sweet, aren't you?"

He started to unbutton his dress shirt and then looked up at me. "Oh. Maybe you don't want to see this. I could just change in the bathroom."

I rolled my eyes but smiled. "You're such a tease."

We kept talking as he continued getting ready for bed. He even brought his phone in the bathroom as he took a quick shower and brushed his teeth. Once he was in bed, he placed his phone against a pillow beside his as if to mimic what I would see if I were lying down beside him.

"You look beautiful. I forgot to tell you at the beginning of the call." He said.

"You always know how to make me blush, Luke Castellan." I bit my lip.

He winked at me and silence fell between us once again. We were prolonging and savoring the moment because we knew as soon as we end the call, our short time together would be over and we'd be alone again. My heart ached.

"Oh hey." I remembered. "Can you make it back to New York two weeks from now?"

"Two weeks from now? How come?"

"It's Percy's wedding that weekend."

"Oh yeah, I forgot about Jackson's wedding. It's been a while since I heard about that again. Kind of thought they cancelled it or what."

I let out a nervous laugh. "That would make me a bad best woman, I suppose."

"Of course Percy would make up something like that for you." He shook his head but seemed amused. "I'll check my schedule and get back to you, alright?"

I pouted. "Are you really going to let me go to the wedding alone?"

"You have Nico and Thalia. Don't worry."

"You're making it sound like you're really not coming." I sighed.

"Hey, hey." He said in a calming voice. "I'll see what I can do, alright?"

"Alright."

"I should go." He said reluctantly.

"You should." I sighed again.

"I love you. So much. I'll see you soon, okay?"

"I love you too." I smiled glumly. "Oyasumi."

He reciprocated my smile. "Oyasumi."

I ended the call and loneliness embraced me. I took a deep breath, packed up, and left the office. When I arrived home, Thalia was already there and Nico looked like he was about to head out.

"Hey." I greeted them. "Where are you going?" I asked Nico, as he kissed my cheeks.

"I was on my way to fetch you at your office." He placed back his keys in the key holder.

"Come on, guys, I swear I'm not overworking myself." I said as I started to play with Onion.

"You're quite stubborn, you know that right?" Thalia said.

I rolled my eyes but sat down on the floor to play with Onion a bit more.

"Come on, I made dinner." Nico said as he helped me up.

"Oh hey, if you guys want anything from my care package, just get some." I offered to both of them.

"Thank you!" Thalia said and made her way to the kitchen. "I've been eyeing this hot chocolate."

After I ate dinner, I did my evening workout before finally starting on my new case. I sat down on my desk in my room, started reading, and taking down notes.

"You're overworking yourself." Thalia sang.

I turned around in my chair and saw her on the top of the stairs. I didn't even notice her come up.

"See? You didn't even hear me go up the stairs." She crossed her arms.

"I did." I lied. "I just didn't turn around cause I knew it was you."

She got on the bed and tucked herself in. "Are you working to avoid some things? I know you do that."

"No, I'm working because I'd want to keep my loft. Thank you very much."

"Whatever you say. Just know that we're always here if you need someone."

"I know that." I smiled. "Thank you."

Nico followed Thalia a couple hours later, coaxing me to go to sleep as well but failing. Once I felt like I made progress, I squeezed myself on the bed and went to sleep.

The rest of the week was pretty monotonous. Everyone around me felt like they had the need to continuously watch over me and check that I don't overwork myself. I get the sentiment but it's hard not to because I had my mother breathing on the back of my neck especially with my recent case. Percy and I somehow slowly grew back together since he would ask me for small favors for the wedding such as checking on the wedding rings, accompanying the groomsmen to their tuxedo fitting, and the likes. Yes, I was busy but I always made sure that I'd squeeze in whatever favor it is because I wanted to make up for being missing in action before.

It was Friday and I was scheduled to go to court today. I got out of the cab and juggled all the documents I brought with me. Gods, why did there have to be so much paperwork? Climbing up the stairs, my phone beeped. I clutched everything to my chest with one hand and retrieved my phone from my bag.

If you are free today, Ms. Chase, your gown is ready for fitting.

I looked at the time and by gauging the development of this case, I messaged back the time I would be available. I got to the courtroom early and got ready. I personally think that this is an open and shut case. For the next hours, I simply showed the jury that the prosecution's witness was simply unreliable. I had all the supporting claims and the witness did not deny it. The jury found my client not guilty, which was expected.

After bidding goodbye to my client, I rushed my way to the dressmaker's. Once I got there, I was led to the dressing room where my gown was hung, waiting for me. I tried it on, gingerly zipping myself up, and stared at my reflection for a while.

Silena is a genius and a gift from the gods.

"Ms. Chase." Someone called me.

I stepped out and saw Rhapso waiting for me. She had a tape measure hanging from her neck and a pin cushion attached to her wrist. She directed me to step in front of the mirror. I was still mesmerized by the dress. I mean, I knew it looked amazing from the start with Silena's sketch but seeing the actual dress was different. I imagined how I would look if my ensemble was complete. The makeup, the hairdo, the accessories.

Rhapso said something that I didn't quite catch.

"Come again." I said with sheepish look on my face.

She smiled softly and repeated herself. "Have you been dieting? You really shouldn't worry about your figure." She continued to pin areas that didn't hug my body as it should.

"The dress looks amazing." I complimented.

She beamed at me for a moment before resuming with the pins. "I'm sorry your fitting was delayed. Rachel's entourage is a handful."

"It's okay. Don't worry about it."

"You know, it's my first time to hear about a best woman."

I chuckled. "Well, the groom and I have a special friendship and I guess he wanted me to be by his side on his special day."

"Why didn't he just ask Rachel to make you the maid of honor?"

"Quite possessive, isn't he?" I laughed.

Rhapso told me to come next week for the final fitting. Personally, I think that the dress is already amazing but just like what Leonardo da Vinci said, "Art is never finished, only abandoned.".

I passed by the office to drop off the files before heading home. Nico was getting ready when I arrived.

"Where are you going?" I called out as I played with my wiggle butt Onion.

"Will and I are going out."

"Good! I was starting to wonder if you were becoming a hermit. I think my sofa already has your butt imprint."

"Are you trying to get rid of me?" He leaned against the railing, looking down at me.

"No. I was just starting to get worried."

"How about you?" He asked. "Any plans tonight? It's a Friday night."

"Maybe just relax after my afternoon exercise. Isn't that what you guys want me to do?" I made my way to the bedroom to get ready myself.

"Definitely." He smiled at me. "Hi." He greeted me and kissed my cheeks as I reached the top of the stairs.

I got a new set of clothes and before I could make it down the stairs, my phone beeped. Mom was asking me to come in tomorrow to meet with the client of my newly assigned case. I groaned and continued down the stairs with heavy footsteps.

"What's the matter?" Nico called out.

"Mom's making me work tomorrow."

"Oof. That's a bummer."

"I swear to the gods if I don't get a bonus for taking this case, Mom will never hear the end of it."

My phone beeped again. I groaned louder. Gods, what is it now? It was from Percy, asking another favor for the wedding.

"Did your mom cancel the meeting?" Nico asked.

"I wish!" I sighed. "Percy's asking me if I could help him with something for his wedding."

"What is it? Maybe I can help you with it." He offered.

"He said he was tasked to choose songs to be played by the live band at the wedding and reception."

"You know what, you have so much on your plate right now." He said sweetly. "You leave this to me and Thalia and we'll take care of it."

"If only I didn't know you'd be up to no good with this, I'd be very relieved."

He gasped exaggeratedly. "I could never."

"For all I know, you'd choose overplayed wedding songs that people would roll their eyes at."

"That's a little devious, don't you think?"

"'You were thinking it.'" I quoted.

"'But you said it.'" He quoted back, making me laugh.

"Wait, if you're going out with Will tonight, that means that the hospital isn't understaffed anymore. Percy would have free time to do this by himself. Why is he making me do it?" I whined.

"To rub it in your face that he's getting married?"

"Hey!"

"Or to have you with him in every step of his wedding."

Nico and I left the apartment together. He's going to meet Will while I'm going to Central Park for my run. I told him that he could make a list but I would have to go over it. Besides, classics are gold, right? That's why they're called classics. Tried and tested for years that people have just grown tired of them. Yeah, I'd have to check that list.

My run and home exercise that followed was very stress relieving I must say. It kept my mind off of things but once I was done, I felt lonely. Nico was on a date with Will and Thalia was out with some of her co-workers. Why does my boyfriend have to be in another continent right now?

I got ready for bed but decided to go over some paperwork to prepare for tomorrow. Even with my hot cup of tea, focusing on the documents was harder than I thought. I couldn't quite stay put, as if something was bothering me. Pushing aside everything related to work, I got a fresh piece of paper and tried to list down songs for Percy's wedding.

Sleep Walk by Santo & Johnny. More Today Than Yesterday by Spiral Starecase. Unforgettable by Nat King Cole. Misty by Ella Fitzgerald. Just the Two of Us by Grover Washington Jr. Come and Get Your Love by Redbone. Don't Worry Baby by The Beach Boys. Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing by Stevie Wonder.

I stopped writing and stared at my list. These were the songs I wanted to be played when I get married. As petty as it sounded, I didn't want to share them. Why can't Percy do this on his own? I mean, I'm sure he'd have some love songs that he and Rachel could relate to. I know nothing about their relationship.

I ended up going to sleep instead. I really didn't want to think about the case and the songs for the wedding anymore. Snuggled up with Onion, the next thing I know I wake up to my alarm and a crowded bed.

Groaning, I reluctantly got up and started my morning routine. Technically, I'm working outside of office hours so I simply wore a summer dress and threw on a blazer. I left the apartment with prepared breakfasts and the coffeemaker on for Thalia and Nico and a kiss on Onion's head.

I stood outside my building with Karl, waiting for a cab we could hail, when I saw a shiny red car zoom by. Huh, looked like Percy's car. At the intersection, it made a U-turn and stopped in front of us.

Just my luck. When I said I wanted to be at peace with each other, the gods must have not heard the part where I wanted to keep my distance.

The window rolled down. "Hey, do you need a ride?"

I bent down, sliding my sunglasses down my nose, and saw Percy wearing identical sunglasses and leaning towards the passenger side. "You know solicitation of prostitution is punishable by law. In case you don't know, I'm a lawyer." I joked.

He snickered and shook his head.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Offering you a ride." He smiled.

"Oh, I don't want to bother you."

"Just get in."

I thanked Karl and got in the car. "Why are you even out this early?" I asked, pushing my sunglasses back up.

"My shift just ended." He started to drive away and fiddled with the radio. "Sorry. I wasn't expecting a passenger today."

"Wait, your shift still later twelve noon to six in the evening."

"They shuffled our schedules since we're understaffed."

"Still?"

"Yep. I think it's going to last the whole month." He looked over to me. "What about you? You look like you're heading to work. It's a weekend."

"You know. Mom calls."

He winced but smiled when he was finally satisfied with what was playing on the radio. If he didn't point out to what he was listening to, I wouldn't have noticed but since he did, I wonder why he was listening to Sam Smith. I looked at him and he was wearing what he usually wore to work: tucked in light blue dress shirt with the top buttons unbuttoned and sleeves rolled up, dark slacks, and tan dress shoes.

"How are your parents?" I asked, trying to avoid dead air.

"They're good. I haven't spent time with them since we had dinner last Sunday. Raisin is staying there for now because I barely spend time at home and with her."

I pouted. "Why didn't you bring her to me?"

He rubbed the back of his neck. "I, uhm, I didn't think it would be okay with you."

I turned and gave him an incredulous look. "Seriously? After I gave you those blue chocolate chip cookies?"

"It's just you have a lot of things going on too." He reasoned.

"Percy." I said in a warning tone.

He took a deep breath. "I'm still hesitant if we're a hundred percent okay. I was trying to give you some space."

"Seaweed Brain." I sighed and it felt like something got off my chest. It's the first time after a long time I called him by our nickname and I saw how his face lit up. "You know that doesn't get you more cookies, right?"

He chuckled but looked defeated. I think he really wanted to get this out of the way.

"We're okay." I reassured him. "I know we're not like before but we're still friends. We'll somehow grow back what we had or something similar to it but I'll be there for you when you need me to."

His lips were in a tight line as he gripped the steering wheel and kept his eyes on the road.

So much for trying to engage in small talk. It made me feel bad that I really did want some space. I was selfish because I put myself first even though Percy was stressed with his job and the wedding. He needed someone. He needed me. Gods, losing a friend was so much harder than losing a significant other.

The rest of the trip was quiet. When we got to the building, he insisted on bringing me up to the office. He looked around and saw that it was really just me who would be working this weekend.

"Drew and your mom aren't coming?" He asked.

"Mom just wants me to meet the client maybe so I could get a better understanding of the case she gave me." I said as I turned on the lights and air-conditioner.

"Do you want some company?" He leaned on the door frame of my cubicle.

"I'm alright. You just ended your shift at the hospital. You must be pretty tired." I looked at him from my desk. "But I appreciate the gesture."

He stayed. He slowly dozed off a couple minutes after sitting down on my cubicle's sofa. I gingerly made him lie down, took off his shoes, and placed a pillow underneath his head and a blanket over him. I moved some of his hair away from his face. Without the sunglasses, he looked exhausted. The eye bags underneath his eyes somehow looked worse. I smiled as I looked at his peaceful face. I'll miss seeing this.

I better step up as his best woman. I owe him that much.

I moved to Mom's office since my client wouldn't want to see someone sleeping while we talked about the case. The client arrived on time and our meeting went fine. I actually enjoyed the company. I went back to my cubicle afterwards and saw Percy still fast asleep. He drooled a little bit but I let it slide. I sat back down on my desk and tried to get a head start on next week's work. With next week being the week of the wedding, I better keep my schedule as open as possible. That's when all the last-minute errands happen. Final tuxedo fittings, final dress fitting, picking up the rings.

It was a Saturday, which meant we'd have our weekly dinner. Soon enough, we'd get an email of the location where we're eating at.

"Have I told you that I like seeing you work?"

I looked up and a drowsy Percy smiling at me. I dropped my pen and ran my fingers through hair, which wasn't in its usual bun.

"You did actually. A couple of weeks ago." I sighed, smiling softly at him.

"Cause I mean it."

"I know."

He slightly got up and leaned back on his arms. "How long was I asleep?"

"A couple hours."

"Gods." He suddenly sat up, alert. "Did you meet with your client already? I didn't know I'd fall asleep."

I laughed. "It's okay. Our meeting was over hours ago. I moved to Mom's office."

"Okay. Okay. Okay." He repeated mostly to himself. "Why didn't you go home after?"

"Decided to start on next week's work. Besides I couldn't just leave you." He was about to protest but I cut him before he could start. "I didn't want to wake you up either cause I know how tired you are and your sleep is much deserved."

He sighed. "Thank you."

"Anything for you, Seaweed Brain."

He smiled. "Wise Girl."

It looks like we're on our way to repairing our friendship.

I ended up convincing Percy to go home and shower before we have our dinner. To be honest, it looked like he needed it. I stayed at the office and asked Nico if they could just pick me up on their way to dinner. I was contented with the amount of work I managed to do.

Silena and the three of us were the first ones to arrive at the restaurant. I updated her about how the dress fitting went and how good her design looked. She smiled and said that Rhapso is equally to praise for the outcome of the dress. She also complimented my make-up and suggested some brands I should try. The twins arrived a couple minutes later.

I wonder where Percy is. Maybe fell asleep while showering.

"Hey, since Percy isn't around yet, best woman, what do you have planned for his bachelor party?" Travis asked after he perused the menu.

I looked at him, dumbfounded.

"You alright there, buddy? You're giving me a blank stare." Travis gave me a concerned look.

"Am I supposed to take care of that?" I asked, almost whispering to myself.

"Yeah! You're the best woman." Connor glanced up from his menu.

"I thought Grover would do it."

"Nope. That's your job." Connor said.

Nico rubbed my back, comforting me. Thalia and Silena looked as if they agreed with the twins. I was starting to panic. I only have a week to pull off a good bachelor party. Stepping up as his best woman means giving him the best bachelor party.

"What happens in a bachelor party? I've never been to one. I haven't even been to a bachelorette party." I blurted out loud too quickly. "How do you throw a bachelor party? How about dinner and drinks? A club?"

"You can do something that you know he'd really enjoy doing." Silena suggested.

"Do you think Percy would enjoy going to a club?" I questioned.

"Or just do something that would make it memorable." Nico shrugged.

"Is having dinner and drinks memorable?" I asked.

Connor smiled smugly at me. "You know, when you plan a bachelor party, you do things that the groom can never do again once he's married."

"No, Connor, I'm not going to plan what you're thinking." I glared at him.

"I'm just giving you tips." He shrugged.

"What am I going to do?" I hung my head.

"You'll think of something." Nico consoled me. "You always do."

"Guys, Percy's here." Thalia whispered.

We talked about work. The twins always had exciting stories due to the nature of their occupation. They shared a couple B&Es and a major drug bust. After they shared, they looked over to me and we nodded at each other. It meant, as detectives and a defense lawyer, we did a good job of not getting in each other's way this week. Silena and Thalia talked about a couple articles they were writing for their works. Nico said he had no body to examine this week and he was happy about that. Percy whined about the hospital being understaffed. Lastly, I told them about my new case from Mom.

Aside from talking about work, we also gossiped. This week, someone we went to school with gave birth and none of us wanted to have kids. We made a bet on who we thought was the first one to have a baby. Majority bet on Percy since he was the first one getting married.

I always looked forward to our weekly dinner.

On our way home, I was still mulling over the bachelor party.

"You're pretty quiet back there." Nico pointed out, using the rearview mirror to look at me.

Thalia turned around from the shotgun seat. "With your knitted eyebrows. What's bothering you? Is it that most of us think Percy's going to have a baby first?"

"What? No!" I shook my head vehemently. "I have no idea what to do for his bachelor party."

"Honestly, he'd love whatever you got planned. He loves you too much to overlook that party." Nico said.

"You really think so?"

"Yeah, Nico's right." Thalia reassured me. "Just note that he loves you and not in love with you."

"Hey! What's that all about? First Nico, now you? Didn't you guys love the idea of Percy and me being together weeks before?"

"It's called tough love, honey." Thalia said nonchalantly. "We're helping you move on."

"Okay. A totally different direction compared to what I expected but I'll have you both know that I have already moved on." I bragged.

I reevaluated our interaction for tonight. Glances at each other and small smiles when we would catch the other looking. Small gestures such as sharing his food with me, ordering an extra appetizer that he knows I like, and ordering the other meal for me to try when I was torn between two. He also seemed very eager to listen whenever I would talk about my week.

"Team friendship!" I raised my fist.

"Whatever you say." Thalia turned back around.

We didn't talk for a couple blocks which made me pay attention to what song Nico was playing.

I sat up. "Hey, what song is this?"

"Cool by Gwen Stefani." Nico replied coolly.

"Huh." I said and listened more closely to the lyrics.

"It's one of the songs I listed for Percy's wedding." Nico added.

"I told him to add it." Thalia chimed in. "Good song, don't you think?"

I rolled my eyes. I knew they'd be up to something like this.

Still frazzled by the impending task of planning a bachelor party, I started doing research when I got home. I put aside my evening workout and sat down in the living room. Thalia got all of us glasses of wine as we brainstormed. It started with very logical ideas such as having dinner and drinks but ended up with sky diving and diving with whales in the Mariana Trench. Now, I bet the latter part is memorable.

I woke up to a brightly lit room and a slight headache. Gods, how much wine did we drink last night? And who didn't draw the curtains closed? I looked around and saw Thalia and Nico sprawled out on the other end of the sofa and on the love seat, respectively, with throw pillows covering their faces. I searched for my dog and saw him asleep beside Nico. I slowly got up, trying not my best not to disturb anyone. Before cleaning up, I drank a lot of water and popped an ibuprofen. I tied my hair into a messy ponytail, stretched a bit, and exhaled sharply. I stowed away three empty wine bottles, washed the glasses, and splashed water on my face along the process. I drew the curtains close and made coffee.

I checked the list from last night as I sipped my coffee. After crossing out the impossible ideas, I think we made a pretty decent list. Dinner and drinks. Drinking game. Club. Broadway show. Sunrise watching. Scuba diving. Gentlemen's club. The last one I added was my last resort and was a tamer version of what Connor was suggesting.

Percy was still working overtime which meant that I had the whole day to refine the bachelor party ideas. Since I no longer wanted to be surprised by what best woman duties I was inherently supposed to do, I researched on what is expected from the best man.

Provide moral support during the ring selection. I was just surprised when Percy announced he proposed to Rachel.

Lead the groomsmen. So far so good.

Shop for formal wear and coordinate purchase. Check.

Serve as counselor and confidant. Uhm.

Coordinate travel and accommodations. I'll assume Rachel took care of this already.

Plan bachelor party. In the process of doing so.

Help guests.

Attend pre-wedding events. Percy hasn't said anything about this.

Create best man emergency kit.

Get dressed with the groomsmen and groom.

Try to keep things on schedule.

Hold rings until the couple's ring exchange.

Stand next to groom.

Deliver officiant's payment after the ceremony.

Sign marriage license as witness.

Give best man speech. Gods, better start with this as well.

Help organize and safe-keep gifts.

Alright. My role as a best woman is still salvageable. Time to really plan this bachelor party and then write a speech.

By the end of the day, I managed to get a concrete plan of how I wanted the party to go and already called the necessary establishments for reservations. Right now, I was sitting in the living room with a pad of paper, a pencil, and a mug of coffee.

A speech about a married couple whose relationship I got in the middle of and almost broke. A speech about celebrating the marriage of a man who I was kissing and had feelings for a few weeks ago. Feelings that were still unresolved up until now. Wait. What. No.

I shook my head and stared at the still blank piece of paper. It felt like hours have already passed but all that was written on my paper was "Speech".

"Still no idea what to say?" Nico asked me as he passed behind the sofa.

I looked up with pleading eyes. "Can you do it for me?"

He put a finger on his chin to act as if he was thinking about it. "If that's the case, then my speech would start with 'You blew it.'."

"Nico." I groaned and threw my head back.

"'Messed it up big time.'" He continued.

"Nico." I groaned louder.

"You'll think of something to say." He smiled at me reassuringly and kissed my forehead.

I looked at Thalia with the same pleading eyes but she purposely looked away, avoiding my gaze.

Godsdammit!

"You know, if you can't really make it heartfelt then fake it till you make it." Thalia commented a couple minutes later. "Percy might not notice. Rachel would definitely not notice."

Monday. I messaged everyone in Percy's entourage about the bachelor party plans when I was on my way to work. Drew gave me my schedule for the week and it seemed pretty manageable: a couple meetings with clients and a couple trips to court. Just as I have requested, leave on Friday. I scribbled on my best woman errands and it looks like my week will still be alright. To be honest, I feel like Percy didn't really give me a lot of tasks which was rather unnerving. I really wanted to help out and I'm very professional when it comes to this. I promised I'd be his best woman, I intend to do my job.

Tuesday. Today was kind of a busy day at work so when Percy messaged me regarding the song list for the live band, I asked Nico and Thalia for whatever list they came up with. I had couple client meetings and in between those, I was looking up the song lyrics. Some of the songs straight up had to be crossed out. The One That Got Away and Thinking of You by Katy Perry. Someone Like You by Adele. Be Mine!, Dancing on My Own, and Call Your Girlfriend by Robyn. Speak Now by Taylor Swift. Those are just to name a few. If it's not songs about heartbreak, it's cliché songs you'd expect in weddings. Being too busy to continue editing the list, I sent it to Percy with a disclaimer that these were just merely suggestions.

I'll send this to Rachel. Thanks. He replied.

Maybe I should have started with "Thalia and Nico came up with this list."

Wednesday. Percy's jeweler messaged me that the wedding rings can be picked up when I was on my way to court. After the trial, I picked up the rings and brought it home for safekeeping. I sat in the kitchen when I got home, staring at the paper bag from the jeweler. I didn't know where the resentment came from. I was torn between shoving it somewhere in my closet to hide it and forgetting about it until the wedding or checking what was inside.

My hands inched closer to the package. I retrieved a small velvet box inside and opened it. There were two silver rings: one plain wedding band and one eternity ring. I tried on the eternity ring on my left ring finger. It fit me perfectly as it sat on top of my friendship ring with Percy. I extended my arm and admired the rings from afar. My heart sank. I should've stowed it away the first chance I got.

Thursday. As if the gods were against me, the days when work is hectic, those were the same days when the wedding errands are urgent. I had two trials and two fittings to go to. It would be alright if their schedules weren't intertwined so I'd just stay at the courthouse on the first half of my day but here we are. First trial is in the morning followed by the final tux fittings of the groom and groomsmen. Second trial is in the afternoon then my final dress fitting.

I packed every document I had for both cases. I even brought out my briefcase and still had to jam some folders in my personal bag and carry some in my hands. This is one of the reasons I don't like handling drawn out cases. I arrived at the courthouse, hauling all the paperwork and somehow managing to hold on to my cup of coffee.

I am tired.

"Do you need help with that?" Someone asked me.

I turned around and saw Nico with a small smile and worried eyes. I was so relieved to see him that I just wanted to cry tears of joy, drop everything, and hug him. He was such a gift from the gods.

"Yes please." I squeaked.

He carried my briefcase and the folders I was holding on to as we entered the courthouse. Nico wore what he called his court suit: white button-down dress shirt, black slacks, black blazer, black tie, suspenders, and black dress shoes. That's what he always wore when he's asked to appear in court.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, sipping from my to-go cup and offering it to Nico.

"I'm here for the McLean case as well." He got my cup, brought it to his lips, and tipped his head backwards.

"Gods, I forgot you were the medical examiner on this case. I swear, this is why I hate these kinds of cases! So the prosecution asked you to take the witness stand again?"

"Yeah, maybe they just want to give the jury a refresher." He joked.

He walked me to the defense's table and put down my things. He wished me luck and went to his seat. Soon enough, the jury filled out the jury box and everyone stood up as the judge arrived. Nico was called to the witness stand and asked to describe the autopsy report. The prosecution had numerous witnesses but my team already had rebuttals to all their claims with additional arguments. The court was adjourned again until next week.

"So what's next on your schedule?" Nico asked as he walked with me out of the courthouse, carrying some of my things.

"Accompany you guys at the tailor's."

"And then?"

"Back here for another trial then to the dressmaker to get my dress."

"Do you want me to hang around?" He offered.

"Is it alright with you? Maybe you have other things to do?"

"Of course it is. It pains me to watch you bring all of this around as you run around the city."

"Thank you." I sighed, touched. "You are a gift from the gods."

Nico let me leave all the paperwork in his car as we run wedding errands. We were the first ones to arrive at the tailor's. Nico went ahead and tried on his tuxedo.

I opted to stay put in one place rather than go around the shop. The last time I was here, I broke things off with Percy. It was a long time ago but I still hated thinking about it.

"What do you think?" He asked as he went out wearing his tuxedo.

"Uhm."

"You hesitated!" He groaned.

"It looks good! The fit looks perfect. It's just...a far cry from what you usually wear." I reasoned.

He looked at his reflection on the mirror with a scowl on his face. The all white tuxedo was something new for Nico. I have to hand it to the tailor though, the tuxedo hugged him in the right places. It just looked very good on him.

The Stolls, Paul, and Percy arrived soon after and tried on their tuxedos. Grover was still on a work trip and arriving tomorrow. No surprise, the all tuxedos were perfect.

"Hey, isn't it bad luck for the bride to see the groom in his tuxedo?" Travis teased, eliciting a snicker from Connor.

Percy blushed and looked embarrassed as he exited the fitting room. Paul smiled. Nico chuckled and threw his arm over my shoulders. Percy stood in front of the mirror and nervously pulled down his vest, which was the only thing that differed from the others' tuxedos.

I smiled, shaking my head, and joined in. "That's on the day of the wedding. Not two days before!"

He glanced down and looked up at me through the mirror. We stared at each other for a moment and his expression was incomprehensible. He took a deep breath and looked away.

I can't believe he's really getting married.

Nico and I packed the tuxedos, along with Grover's, in his car since everyone voted to get ready for the wedding in my loft. Once everything was set, everyone else left but Percy looked like he wanted to stay or go along with us. As if he was just waiting for either Nico or me to invite him and he would answer yes almost immediately.

Percy's phone rang and he reluctantly answered. "Jackson. Yes, Will?"

Their conversation was laced with medical jargons and I couldn't keep up anymore. All I know is that Percy wanted Will to decrease something down to ten drops per hour and administer a 2mL shot of something. He gave us a sheepish look, waved goodbye, and walked to the direction of his car.

"Is it just me or Percy was waiting for an invitation?" Nico asked me with a face that could be translated to 'yikes'.

"I was waiting for you to say something." I quickly passed the blame to him. "You're his cousin."

"What? Why me? You're the best friend."

I rolled my eyes. "Come on! Everyone has to stop using the Best Friend Card on me."

We went back to the courthouse and Nico watched the trial, waiting for me. I have been handling this case for around eight months already so when the jury found my client not guilty, the amount of relief was unimaginable. After I shoved all the paperwork back in Nico's car, he drove us to the dressmaker. The visit was short. My dress fit me like a glove and still stunning nonetheless.

I carried on with my routine: afternoon workout and dinner with Nico and Thalia. We hung around the living room afterwards. I still had no addition to my best woman speech and I was wondering if I should just wing it and ad-lib on the reception itself. Defeated, I went to bed early.

Friday. With the large entourage and everyone's schedule, no dinner rehearsal was planned. For today, we're going to focus on nothing but celebrating Percy's last day of being legally single.

I woke up early because the first part of the party will probably take the whole day. I packed everything I needed and threw in some snacks in a bag. I was making coffee when I heard Nico's phone ring followed by a grumble.

"Morning!" I greeted him as he made his way down the stairs. "Ready for today?"

"I'm sorry. I can't go." Nico apologized. "There's a crime scene I need to get to."

"Nico!" I protested. "But didn't you already file a leave for today?"

"I did!" He rubbed his eyes and then pinched the bridge of his nose. "Apparently the one working today called in sick."

Nico seemed to be more frustrated about this than I am. I sighed. "Alright. Get ready for work. The coffee would be done in a moment."

"Don't worry. I'll drop you off at Percy's so you can go together." He kissed my forehead and left the kitchen.

Gods. Okay. So one out of five can't come. I checked my phone in case anyone else bails on me. I called Travis.

"Stoll." He answered after the first ring.

"Are you still going today?"

"About that..." He trailed off.

"Gods! Not you too!" I groaned.

"I hope you meant 'not you too'."

"Yeah, that's what I said."

"I mean, 'not you too'. Like number two. 'Not you two.'"

"No." It came out as a whisper.

"Yep. The NYPD needs the finest detectives on the case."

"No." I repeated.

"Fine, fine. There's a big case and every detective in the precinct was called in today. I promise you Connor and I already filed our leaves just as you instructed us to."

"Solve the case immediately." I said before hanging up.

Three out of five.

Grover. He should be on the plane right now. I checked the status of his flight and to no surprise, it's cancelled.

Four out of five.

Percy. I dialed his number. I sent him a message last night, telling him that the party was starting early. If nothing came up, he should be getting ready by now.

"Annabeth?" His voice sounded worried and I was no longer irritated.

"Just an update. Nico and the Stolls are being called into work today. Grover's flight is cancelled. It's just you and me. Are you still going to push through with today?"

"Oh."

"I mean, you could just spend today to rest and from the looks of it, you need it. We wouldn't want a pair of eye bags with a body attached getting married tomorrow, don't we?" I joked, making him chuckle.

"No, let's push through with today. I wouldn't want your plan to go to waste. I really appreciate the effort you put into planning today even though I still have no idea what we're going to do." His voice was very sincere.

I smiled. "Alright. Wear something casual! See you in a while!"

I finished getting ready, savored my cup of coffee, and played with Onion while waiting for Nico. Thalia offered to walk Onion later today, which made me less guilty about not spending time with him today. She also told me that she wanted to get out of the way of the wedding preparation tomorrow so she'll stay in her apartment tonight.

"Are you still bummed about the last minute cancellations?" Nico stole a glance at me.

"I don't really mind being alone with Percy." I shrugged.

"Are you being sarcastic?"

"I'm not! I'll just think it's like our normal day out."

"Last day for your feelings."

"Shut up." I rolled my eyes. "I don't have feelings for Percy."

"Not anymore." He teased. "But really, once he's married, Rachel's got a hold on him legally. If anything like before would happen, it's going to be messy."

"I already know that. Where is this conversation going?"

"Just saying that some things will change after tomorrow."

I kept quiet and hope Nico doesn't say anything that would make me think too much. He dropped me off at Percy's building. I ran up to Percy's door and knocked so fast that he opened it almost immediately. When he saw how excited I was, he picked up on the energy and we spent a moment hyping each other.

"Wait! Wait!" Percy said. "Just let me finish my coffee."

"Alright. You'll need it! Just stay here and don't follow me if you don't want to ruin the surprise." I instructed.

I went to his room to get the things he needs for the first part of today and shoved it in my bag. I walked out and then it hit me. The scene flashed in front of my eyes and resentment filled me. I've moved on, I swear to the gods, I have! I'm past feeling this way.

"Wise Girl?" Percy called out. "Is everything alright?"

I took a deep breath. "Yep!"

I got back to the kitchen and found Percy eagerly waiting for me. I held my hand out in front of him.

"I'm driving today." I said.

"Can't you just put it in the GPS like before?" I shook my head. "Fine. Do you need me to wear a blindfold too?"

"If you could, that would be better! I mean, you did it to me before." I put my hand on my hip.

"Fine." He took out his handkerchief and folded it for a makeshift blindfold.

"You're prepared." I noted.

"Yeah, I was already expecting it."

He put on the blindfold when we got settle in his car. Honestly it felt exhilarating driving through Manhattan in Percy's new car. The Sam Smith songs playing in his car was beyond me. It was actually the first time I drove his car, which is probably why he seemed very tense as he gripped his seat.

"Gods, you can loosen the grip. I'm not going to crash your car." I rolled my eyes as if he could see me.

"Tell me again when was the last time you drove a car."

"I just don't think owning a car in New York City is a good idea especially when my friends have car." I laughed.

I saw Percy smile and shake his head. He eased up a bit and his hands released the seat.

"But remember when I used to drive around in Paul's Prius?"

"Driving the Prius even though our destination was just a couple blocks away." He teased.

"Well, I got to drive around more looking for a parking spot." I defended myself.

Since I kept my eyes on the road, I didn't notice Percy's hand reaching for something at the back until I heard his hand skimming on the surface of my bag.

"What are you doing, Seaweed Brain?" I asked. "Are you trying to open my bag to check what I packed up?"

"No." His hand recoiled so fast. "You're no fun! I'll say you're kidnapping me."

"Excuse you, you came with me willingly. Enthusiastically if I must say. You even walked in front of me on our way to your car."

"Ahh, you got me there."

"Do you want anything on the way? Some breakfast?"

He looked over to me with what I assume is a pleading look. I went to one of our favorite diners and ordered omelettes, sandwiches, and bagels to go. Of course, I made Percy wait in the car. I continued to drive us to our destination. I really wanted to surprise Percy so even though we arrived, I told him to take off his blindfold once we're inside the establishment. He held my hand as I led him inside.

"Alright, take it off." I smiled.

It was as if watching a child receiving a present he's been wanting on his birthday. He took his time as he turned around in his spot, gazing at the scuba suits and equipment and the tanks. He stopped when he was finally facing me again with wide bright eyes and mouth that opened and closed.

"Yeah, we're going to see a lot of those later." I teased.

"Are we really - ? Are you serious? How were you able to keep this from me for so long?" He asked all in one breath.

"Here." I dug up his board shorts from my bag and handed it to him. "Get ready. Don't worry, I have everything you need."

He walked away and you can just see the extra bound in his step. I talked to the manager about what happened to our party and I agreed to pay a portion for the last minute cancellation. They loaded the boat with the equipment and by ten in the morning, we were off.

Honestly, when Percy insisted that we should get our diving certifications a couple summers back, I thought he was just wasting our time. Who knew it would come in handy for his bachelor party?

I smiled as I looked at the buildings we passed by on our way to the diving spots. The sky was clear and very blue. It was warm today but the wind was chilly. I was already enjoying myself when I noticed that Percy seemed uneasy. He nervously touched or played with something between his fingers. Keeping my eye on it, I found out it was our friendship ring on his left ring finger; the same way I was currently wearing mine.

Gods, Percy, you're making this harder than it already is.

Today, we were going to Wreck Valley, a place where the seafloor is littered with sunken ships from the 300 years of shipping traffic in and out of New York City. On our way there, the instructor talked about the wrecks we were going to as we munched on our breakfast.

Built in 1852, Black Warrior was a cargo and passenger ship. She traveled from New York to New Orleans and Havana, Cuba. Due to heavy fog, she ran aground in 1859 but all the passengers and cargo were safely brought to New York by other vessels. Another wreck we were going to is Lizzie D, a prohibition rum runner that sunk on 1922 for unknown reasons. If we dug around, we might still get a bottle of prohibition whiskey.

When we got near to the first wreck, the captain of the boat called us over and explained how a certain instrument could project sound waves that could show a side of the boat. We suited up and then jumped in, following our instructor.

The water was cold and the visibility was pretty limited, five feet at best. Everything was green underwater. Since the currents were strong, we had to pull ourselves down to the wreck by ropes. After a while, the Black Warrior's remnants appeared. Beforehand, our instructor told us that the boat's boiler is the highest relief, making it one of the landmarks. We could still see brass spikes or pins that held the boat together. Percy and I tried our luck and dug around the wreck because we knew that silverware were recovered before, aside from portholes and the anchor.

It took me a while to convince Percy to going back to the boat. I even told him that we were going to another wreck. As if Percy was a fish or seaweed in his past life, he always wanted to be in water. We got back to the boat and he was as happy as a clam. He couldn't stop smiling as we made our way to the next wreck. It looked like he was having the time of his life.

With all of our takeouts and even my packed snacks finished, our tour took the whole day so we go back to Manhattan in the afternoon. Up until now, you still couldn't wipe the smile off of Percy's face. If I already got this reaction from the first part of my bachelor party, I feel like I should give myself a pat on the back.

I dropped him off at his building, instructing him to shower and dress nicely. I drove to my building and got ready myself. Onion wasn't in the loft, which meant Thalia must be walking him now.

After taking a shower and putting on makeup, I wore my dress, jewelry, and heels and spritz on some perfume. The upper part of my nude dress was loose, overlapping, and plunging while from the waist until just above my knees hugged my curves. The delicate straps were crossed all the way to the small of my back. I left my hair down and it reached just a little bit past my shoulders. My princess curls according to Percy.

I was on my way to the car when I saw Nico's car.

He turned on the hazard lights and lowered the window. "You stole my spot!"

I looked down at my watch. "You're late but also off early."

"A couple bodies and they called in somebody else." He explained.

"I'm on my way to pick Percy up. Do you want me to wait for you so we can go together?"

"You go ahead. I need to freshen up and rest a bit." He smiled.

"Alright. See you in a bit." I got in and started the engine.

Nico honked his car as I drove away. I picked Percy up and he still has the same smile he had when I dropped him off a while ago. He wore what he usually wore to work and threw on a blazer. As I slowed down and looked for a parking spot, he looked confused.

"Aren't we too early?" He asked me. "They open by 7PM, right? Or do they have new operating hours?"

We entered our favorite steakhouse and the owner greeted us. He congratulated Percy for the upcoming wedding and I told him that the rest of the party will arrive later. With the number of times Percy and I ate here, he was alright with me renting the restaurant for a couple hours.

I quickly checked my phone and got a couple messages from Percy's entourage.

Sexy and classy Nico messaged me with a winking emoji at the end.

Got on the next flight. I'm already in NYC. I'll catch up with dinner. I sighed in relief when I read Grover's message.

"I am famished!" Someone announced.

I looked up and saw the twins make their way to the table. "Finally!"

"NYPD's finest close the case." Travis smiled smugly.

We talked about the case for a while before Nico and Grover arrived. We were finally complete. I looked over to Percy and he seemed like he was enjoying himself. Steak and shots: hanging out with close friends, eating good food, sipping on good alcohol.

"We should play something!" I offered. "A drinking game. Percy asks us questions about himself. Whoever doesn't get the correct answer drinks."

"You just want us drunk!" Connor accused.

Percy laughed and cocked his head. "He does have a point."

I rolled my eyes. "Fine."

Quarter to eight, we left the restaurant and headed to my next surprise. I made sure everyone who had a car were still sober enough to drive, which made me thankful they didn't agree to the drinking game I thought of. I got us tickets to see a Broadway musical that Percy has been wanting to watch. It was something about a lightning thief and demigods. Since the musical is two hours and fifteen minutes long, we left the theater by ten-thirty. I told Percy that he could call it a night and head home if he wanted to but he seemed pretty pumped up and delighted with what else I have planned.

I brought them to the club that Nico and I went to a couple weeks ago. The place was already rather packed when we arrived but we had a table reserved for us. Good thing I made Percy take off and leave his blazer in his car. The twins had brought out a plastic crown and made Percy wear it. We had a couple more drinks before going to the dance floor. At first, all of them circled me, making sure no other guy would get to me. I appreciated it but I insisted that Percy should be in the middle since it was his bachelor party. All of them still kept an eye on me and brought me back in the middle if somebody gets too close. Percy still had the same smile plastered across his face which means so far, so good.

Nico excused himself and told me that he'd just sit for a while. I continued dancing and then realized that it was only Percy and me left. He had a shy smile on his face and opened his arms. I laughed and danced towards him. I draped my arms over his neck and closed my eyes, throwing my head back and laughing. He laughed as well and wrapped an arm around my waist to support me. I was having so much fun.

By two in the morning, we exited the club. The fresh air was refreshing compared to the one inside. I was already contented with the outcome of the party, very proud actually. Connor proposed we go to a gentlemen's club and he wasn't taking no for an answer, even promising to foot the bill as long as we don't order anything too pricey. With the help of Percy, we made sure the one's driving were clearheaded enough.

We got to the gentlemen's club and almost everyone who worked there greeted Connor. They even had Connor's usual table off-limits in case he showed up. A couple girls were already performing on the stage while Connor handed us singles. I spent the time there sobering up so I ordered non-alcoholic drinks. When the number was done, Connor called over a girl and told her to bring Percy to the champagne-room. She held out her hand to Percy and seductively led him somewhere. After a moment, I excused myself and looked for the comfort room. I passed by a corridor and noticed someone just standing there. I did a double take when I realized it was Percy.

"Hey." I said as I leaned against the wall in front of him. "This isn't where I thought I'd find you. Connor might say a thing or two to you about not maximizing your private dance."

"I just need a moment away from all that."

"Oh. I should probably leave you alone then." I stood up straight by pushing myself off the wall.

"Please stay."

There was a flash of desperation on his face. So much sadness filled his eyes as those pleaded me to stay. I went back to my previous position and examined him. Percy already had a couple drinks which explains why he had a sleepy look on his face. He repeatedly rubbed the back of his neck and avoided my gaze.

I really didn't think I'd find Percy here. All alone in a corridor while we were in a gentlemen's club for his bachelor party. Especially just a couple moments after Connor bought him a private dance with his favorite stripper. When our eyes locked, we stared at each other and didn't say anything.

"You know I love you, right?" He broke the silence between us.

My face softened. "Ever since we were kids."

"Every single day."

I smiled sadly at him. "I know."

He took a deep breath and pushed himself upright. "Come on."

I took his extended hand as he helped me stand upright. We stood inches away from each other then laughed it off as we put some space between us. I heard nothing aside from my own heartbeat.

I didn't think he would hear it over the music when I whispered. "I've always loved you. More than you think."

I looked up only to find his eyes were fixed on mine. For one last time, I allowed myself to drown in his sea green eyes. His gaze broke away from mine and lowered to my lips. He started to lean towards me and we both reached for each other.

It was innocent and sweet. Neither of us opened our mouth or deepened the kiss. His lips were soft against mine as we slowly puckered our lips. His arms snaked their way to the small of my back. I felt his fingers intertwine as if to lock me in the embrace while I placed my palms flat on his chest. His hands were warm and the friendship ring cold against my bare back. The kiss was reminiscent of my first kiss, which was still with Percy. Everything went painstakingly slow, as if we were savoring the moment one last time, which was partly true because nothing like this could ever happen after tomorrow.

We both had sad smiles on our faces when we parted. He placed his forehead against mine, his mouth open and eyes still closed. His face showed a pained expression. I hated seeing that look on his face. He opened his eyes and I saw vulnerability and sadness. We let go of each other and headed back to our table, sitting across one another.

It was a goodbye kiss.

Forget the non-alcoholic drinks. I downed so many drinks after that. I couldn't remember how many glasses I've had tonight. Nico eyed me as I finished each drink but I reassured him that I had it under control. Nico's such a good friend. The best. If only I could keep him to myself but that means I'd keep him from Will. Oops. That's supposed to be a secret. Wait. These are just my thoughts.

I wasn't sad about it. Actually, I was very happy for Percy and his big day tomorrow. No bitterness or whatsoever, I promise. Camper's promise. You know, since we both went to a summer camp called Camp Half-blood when we were younger.

Our group left the gentlemen's club in the wee hours of the day. With Nico being the most sober or being who handled their alcohol the best, he hailed cabs for all of us. One cab for Grover and the twins and another for Percy, Nico, and me since our apartments were on the same way. Nico sat in the middle. My fingertips were tingly and my head and eyelids felt heavy. I placed my head on Nico's shoulder. I stared at my friendship ring, pouted, and took it off, chucking it inside my clutch. It was a quiet ride, which was unusual for me who is very talkative once I've had a couple drinks. If it were a movie, there would be a cricket sound somewhere in the cab. Maybe sad piano music or something.

"What did you say?" Nico turned slightly to look at me.

I lifted my head a bit to look at him. "What?"

"Were you humming?" He asked, amused. "What were you humming?"

Shoot. Was I humming my sad piano music out loud?

"Nothing." I said quickly, placed my head back on his shoulder, and snuggled closer to him.

They dropped me off first. Nico said he'd take care of Percy and bring him home. I kept insisting on letting Percy drink Ibuprofen and lots of water before he sleeps so he wouldn't be hungover when he wakes up. Nico made sure I got in the elevator safely before getting back in the cab. That took a while because I kept saying goodbye to him over and over again. I'd turn around, wave, and shout goodbye after taking a couple steps.

Without Karl's help, I probably would've stood in the elevator and wondered why it wasn't moving. I touched the walls of the hall to help me stay upright as I made my way to my door. I may have tried a couple times but I finally got the door open. When I got inside my loft, I immediately knew that something was different. I looked around. The kitchen seemed in order. There was luggage in the living room. Onion was by my side. The appliances in the living room were turned off. Wait. Why is there luggage in my living room?

I slowly went near it to investigate.

"Oh hey, I didn't hear you come in."

I turned around so fast it was dizzying.

"Are you okay?" The person rushed up to me to keep me standing.

I stared at their face, gave them the biggest smile, and breathily said. "Hi."

Luke's face softened and a charming smile spread across his lips. "Hi."

I must admit seeing that smile on his face made my heart skip a beat. Add that with his pilot uniform and his sleek work hairdo. It made me melt.

"I didn't know you were coming."

"Surprise?" He offered.

"Consider me surprised." I smiled and tiptoed to plant a kiss on his lips.

He responded by kissing me back while bringing me closer to him with one hand on my waist and then I felt both of his hands on my bare back, moving upward and clutching me closer to him with his nails lightly scratching me. I ran my hands up his arms and placed it on his neck.

"Gods, I've missed you so much." He said in between kisses.

I pulled away. "You have no idea how much I missed you." It came out as a whisper as he kissed his way down to my neck and back to my lips.

"Did you just arrive?" I asked him after our little make out session, still admiring his getup.

"Yeah, didn't you notice the hat on your kitchen island?" He pointed out.

I looked at the kitchen again. Gods, how could I have missed that?

"Where have you been?" He asked. "You taste like alcohol."

I blushed as I thought of how he knew I had the taste of alcohol in my mouth. "Percy's bachelor party. We went to a bar and then a gentleman's club. The twins insisted on the latter part."

Luke chuckled as he went to the kitchen to get something. "How did that go?"

"Well, if it makes women feel empowered, I'm all for it." I shrugged.

Luke came back with a glass of water and handed it to me. "Tastes like you need water."

I smiled and obliged. I stood up from the sofa and felt lightheaded.

"Are you in the right state of mind right now?" He eyed me as I stood there, waiting for the slight dizziness to go away.

"Yeah! I'm just in that sweet spot of being tipsy." I defended myself. "Try me. Ask me anything."

"Okay. Five questions."

I put my hands on my hips.

"What is the acceleration due to gravity?"

"Metric or English?"

"Both."

"9.807 meters per second squared and 32.174 foot per second squared."

"What's the difference between xylem and phloem?"

"Xylem transports water and minerals. Phloem transports sugars and nutrients."

"Mary's mom has four daughters. Their names are April, May, and June. What is the name of the fourth daughter?"

"Mary. Come on, Luke. Those are no brainers." I crossed my arms and sighed.

"What does pleading the Fifth grant you?"

"Right to indictment by the grand jury before any criminal charges for felonious crimes. A prohibition on double jeopardy. A right against forced self-incrimination. A guarantee that all criminal defendants have a fair trial. A guarantee that the government cannot seize private property without making a due compensation at the market value of the property." I raised a finger as I listed down the answers.

He stood in front of me, bent down, and looked into my eyes, making sure I was really alright. "Okay." He smiled then straightened up. "I believe you."

"So what's the fifth question? You told me you'll ask me five questions. You've only asked four so far." I looked up at him, challenging to prove that the alcohol I consumed didn't cloud up my mind.

We locked eyes for a couple seconds. Digging for something in his pocket, Luke started slowly kneeling down on one knee. As his knee reached the floor, he produced a small velvet box in one hand.

"I have circled the world. Been to so many different countries. Seen the beautiful sites. Immersed in various cultures and traditions. But those are nothing compared to how amazing it feels to have you in my life. I could experience it all again a thousand times but it still wouldn't come close to the exhilaration and awe I feel when I see you, warmth and comfort when I'm in your embrace, happiness when I know I have you.

"I love you so much, Annabeth. You are my only Wonder of the World. Wherever you are in the world, that's where I belong. Annabeth, will you marry me?"

He had the softest worried yet hopeful expression on his face. I hadn't noticed the tears that formed on the rims of my eyes. I smiled so widely that the tears rolled down my cheeks. No words could come out of my mouth so I eagerly nodded, trying to find my voice.

"Yes, Luke, of course." I finally said.

For a moment, disbelief painted his face. As if he couldn't believe that I really said yes. A corner of his mouth lifted into a half smile and it looked like he was on the verge of tears. His face lit up instantly as relief washed over him and he could finally let out a breath he was holding. Luke was crying tears of joy, I hope, and took a deep breath as his hands shakily put the ring on my finger. Once it was on, he got up and cradled my face with both hands, peppering me with kisses, and saying "I love you" repeatedly in between. Still holding my face, he slightly pulled away to study my expression and his mouth curled into a beaming smile. He bit his lower lip, excited, before leaning in and finally kissing my lips.
