Chapter 19: The Truth

Luke's POV
We walked through the garden as we spoke. Me and my mother. A person I never thought I would ever meet. The whole conversation was confusing and I kept asking her the same questions for quite a while. Yet she showed no sign of being bored or annoyed with me. She smiled and answered all my questions, reassuring me that everything would be better soon. She explained that I had been born a demon from the books of Zeref, yet I was an anomaly. I had been a natural birth, not birthed from magic and curses like the other demons.
"So who is my father?"
"I have no idea…" She sighed. "Master Zeref picked a mage that was strong, but I never got to know him very well. I think he is out there somewhere… I'm sorry I cannot be of more help."
At first I thought that she was lying, but I dismissed the thought. She did not know, but her master did. All I had to do was ask Zeref…
"Where is Zeref?" I asked as we entered the sakura part of the garden.
"We don't know…" She confessed.
"You are his most powerful creations and you don't know where your master is?"
"I know that it looks suspicious. But we haven't seen him in years. Trust me, if I knew where he was we would go to him at once!"
"You don't make it easy to trust you!" I growled.
"No… But in time I hope you will! I have waited for this moment for a long time and I am happy that you are home."
I took a step back. The fortress we inhabited was a large cube with thousands of rooms and passages. It was mostly dark and cold, it lacked any warmth at all. No one, except for my mother, acted friendly. Everyone was a demon and they all were filled with hatred and contempt. I almost had gotten into a fight with one of the females. If Mard Geer had not stepped in we would have attacked each other for sure.
"I know things are… Different… But you will soon see this place as your home." She kept reassuring me.
"I won't!" I snapped.
My mother flinched and took a step back.
"Luke, I..."
"You think you can drag me off here and say this is my home!? Don't bull shit me like that! My home is with Fairy Tail! I lived there all my life! I grew up there, met my most precious friends there! The woman I love is there! I cannot just leave all of that behind! Last time I saw them they were in grave danger! I have to go back!"
My mother stayed quiet. Her eyes had turned dark. The air around us turned cold. I could hear thunder in the distance.
"I knew it would be hard for you to accept me and our home… But this… For you to have grown so attached to these human? To fall in love with a lesser being!? For you to call such a lackluster shit hole your home when I have finally gotten you back!"
The air around us started to crackle. I could feel it, her magic, no her curse. Lightning.
"Why can't you see…" She cried. "That I am the only one that cares for you!?"
A large bolt of lightning was sent down from the sky and at first I thought I could take it head on, even eat it. But in the last moment I decided to dodge it. The bolt exploded into the ground and I was pushed several yards away by the blast.
"That is no normal lightning…" I coughed. "That is slayer magic… But how?" I flinched.
Behind me!?
"Why can't you see?" She had appeared behind me and hugged me tightly. "I AM THE ONLY ONE THAT CARES FOR YOU! I WAS THE ONE THAT SAVED YOU, THAT HEALED YOU! I MADE YOU WHOLE AGAIN!"
I could not move, she was too strong. Her grip stopped me from moving an inch.
"Let go of me…" I told her. "I am thankful that you saved me… But I don't know you and I refuse to act as one of Zeref's demons!"
"Luke!"
"My friends were tormented by the demons and followers of Zeref! People I cared for died! Because of his followers, I was forced into being a slave. I refuse to be a pawn in his game and I refuse to go up against my friends!"
With all my might I pushed her away from me.
"I'm going back to Fairy Tail! At least they all care for me and won't wait til I'm dead to get me back home!" I turned my back on my mother and walked away.
I could hear her giggle.
"Why are you giggling for?!" I growled, I was in a really bad mood after her outburst, so her giggling really pissed me off.
"I think it is cute that you would rather be with the dead than to be with me…"
"What?!"
"I am sorry… But Fairy Tail is no more!"
I snapped. I rushed at her and grabbed her by the throat.
"You lie!"
"Sweet boy, I would never lie to you! The guild Fairy Tail is nothing but a faint dream now… It has been like that for the past six years!"
"What…?" I let go of her. "Six years… How!?"
"The healing process and the transformation back to your old self took a while… During that time Fairy Tail lost some of its core members… They had some infighting, they faced a few Dark Guilds and took part in their annual tradition of the S-class examination!"
"And then what!?"
"During the examination the black winged dragon Acnologia came to the island of Tenrou and killed every Fairy Tail member there, including master Makarov, Gildarts, Laxus Dreyar and Erza Scarlet… In total, over two dussin members died."
My heart stopped. It could not be true. How could it be, a dragon, a real dragon had killed my friends, my family. I fell to my knees. Tears formed in my eyes as she listed all the dead members.
I had failed… I had failed them all…
Erza… I'm sorry…
