"Jayd," Kylo's voice whispered.
Jayd shifted in her restless sleep. She couldn't keep the memory of him away.
She could see him hovering above her, looking down at her with a glimmer in his eyes, just like he used to do on the nights they spent together.
"Jayd," he whispered again.
"Jayd!" his voice became the voice of someone else and woke her up.
She sat up with a groan, wiping sweat off her forehead. She looked toward the door of her tent to see Beaumont's head peeking in.
"I'm sorry to wake you," he said, "but by the looks of it, you weren't getting much rest anyway."
"Everything alright?" Jayd asked.
"Everything's fine," Beau said, "I just thought we could get an early start this morning."
"Right," Jayd grunted, rubbing her tired eyes, "Give me a second. I'll be right out."
Beaumont left with a smile and a nod.
Jayd stood up and got dressed, all the while the memory of Kylo Ren's face in her dreams floated in and out of her mind.
She closed her eyes and tried to reach out to him.
She felt him faintly, like a wall she could only brush with the very tip of her finger but never fully reach.
"Jayd," his voice whispered, echoing and fading in and out.
She continued to reach, but no more came from him. She sighed and left the tent.
The morning was brisk and misty. The fog rolled over and around the giant trees. The creatures that lived there seemed to be sleeping in, for not even the chirp of a bird broke the silence.
Beau was waiting for her.
"Good morning," he said with a bright smile.
Jayd waved silently as she approached him.
"I, uh, made us drinks," he said, leaning down and picking up two mugs of steaming liquid and offering one to her, "Careful, it's hot."
Jayd took the cup from him, warming her hands on its smooth sides. She looked at Beau for a moment, almost suspiciously.
He seemed to notice, for he took a sip of his as if to prove it was safe. He grinned.
Jayd took a small mouthful. It was sweet but left a bitter aftertaste. She felt it warm her entire body as it went down.
"Well, Beau," she said, raising an eyebrow, "why all the...niceness?"
She gestured around with the last word.
Beau laughed. "I'm a nice guy."
"Sure," Jayd agreed.
"To tell you the truth, I feel bad for how some of the rebels have been treating you around the base," he said, his grin all but disappearing.
"I don't need you to feel bad for me," Jayd said, "I can take care of myself. Besides, I don't blame them."
Beau looked at her as if inviting her to continue.
"I helped lead an army that killed their family and friends," Jayd explained, "I can't expect them all to forgive so easily when I've taken all they had. I'm sure I couldn't. All I can do is help now in any way I can."
Beau gulped down the rest of his drink.
"You're a surprising person, Jayd," Beau said, "I think you'll be an excellent mother."
"Thank you," Jayd said.
"So is it true you trained with Luke Skywalker?" Beau asked.
Jayd nodded silently.
"I don't care if she trained with Master Yoda himself, I don't trust a hair on her head," a voice rang out through the trees.
Jayd and Beau looked over their shoulders. Poe emerged, frowning at the two of them.
"Careful, Beau," he said, "She can use mind tricks. She did it on me before."
"Have you ever considered you might just be stupid?" Beau asked with a grin.
Even Poe couldn't help but smirk back at him. "Just watch your back is all I'm saying."
More rebels began to filter out, each heading to their own post and job.
Beau smiled at Jayd. "Poe is a good man," he said, "He'll come 'round. Don't worry."
"Thanks," Jayd said.
The forest awoke and Jayd couldn't help but feel hopeful.
