Chapter twenty two
28th February 1914
Boston
Jack carefully watched Rose as she slept, her beautiful red hair spread across the pillow, the sleep hiding the beauty of her green eyes and her nostrils flaring as she moved around her sleep. His hand touched her belly immediately, thinking that she kept and protected their baby there. Both of them were nervous, Rose was not in a good condition and he worried they might lose the baby. Their family doctor advised Rose at staying in bed, keeping herself calm, a lot of sleep, no smoking and also gave her a diet. They kept the doctor's advises and for two weeks, since the news of the pregnancy, Rose stayed down all day.
Jack thew the blankets off him and slowly got up, tucking the blankets around his wife tightly and opened the wardrobe. He found a pair of pants and a shirt which were comfortable enough- unlike a tuxedo- and went to the sitting room of their bedroom to dress. When he was finally dressed, he carefully closed the doors behind him and walked down to the two flight of stairs.
The house was warm and the weather outside was not that cold. The snow had finally melted, and the sun melt the last of it. Jack opened the door of the kitchen, just for a little so they could get some fresh air.
Opening the cupboard, Jack took a pan, bowls and oil. He wanted Rose to have a breakfast in bed and please her. Opening the fridge, he pulled out a bottle of milk eggs and cheese. Pouring some oil in the pan, he started mixing the eggs and the cheese together in order to prepare a omelette. As he waited for the omelette to be prepared, he poured milk in a glass and set it on a wooden tray. When the omelette was done, he put it on a plate and made his way on the bedroom.
Rose was still sleeping as Jack sat besides her. He moved to cradle the tray in one hand and the other to touch her fingers softly. He watched as she started waking up slowly, looking at him and let out a small smile.
"Good morning sunshine" he smiled and leaned to kiss her softly. "How you're feeling?"
Rose streched in her bed. "I threw up twice that night."
Jack frowned. "I remember" he nodded. He had woken up to find Rose vomiting in a bucket he had left besides the bed two times. He was worried about her; he would fall if something happen at Rose. She was his whole life.
"Oh omelette!" Rose gasped surprised. "I wanted to eat eggs so badly" she said. Grabbing the fork she started eating hungrily, drinking milk along with it.
"Nice breakfast, huh?" Jack grinned taking the tray off her when she was finished.
"What are you gonna do today?" she asked as she laid back to the pillows.
"I'll go in a little while to the market and then I'll have to do some work. I'm able to have days off because I'm the main boss but I have the duty to work from home" he said frowning.
"I can go to the market" Rose shrugged. "I don't want all these stupid women gossip why a big businessman is shopping instead of his wife. This is supposed to be my duty"
"Rose" he said glancing at her. "Since when we cared about gossips? Don't you remember how it was when we left the mansion? All were whispering about us? That we don't go very often at balls? Gossips come and go, they'll soon get over it"
Rose sighed burying her head in the soft pillow. "I really hate that I can't move around. Helena and Mother said that will pass by today but I'm not in the mood. Especially about seeing mother. I haven't forgived her about what she hid from me"
"Read a book, lay down, sleep, do what you want. We can eat some leftovers from dinner last night if you wish" Jack said.
Rose nodded. "Yeah. I'm not in the mood for anything else."
She watched in sadness as Jack pulled his boots and laced them. "Do you have to leave?"
He leaned over and kissed her forehead. "I'll be back soon. Don't press yourself" he muttered and getting up he walked out of the bedroom, closing the doors softly behind him. Getting out of the master bedroom, he put his coat and exited the house.
As he walked over to the market he heard them. Again.
"It's Jack Dawson over there"
"Shhh- He'll hear us!"
"I can't believe that he's shopping... Where's that girl? Mr. Hockley is so lucky that she left him"
"I bet he's locking her inside the house and he's doing the right thing. She's a little whore, that's why she left Mr. Hockley"
"Do you know she's pregnant?"
"What...?"
"Oh my God!"
"I heard Mrs. Dawson telling Mrs. DeWitt Bukater. Thankfully her daughter is on the way to forgive her. She has at least some heart"
"So she's pregnant?"
"Yes but I doubt it's Mr. Dawson's child"
Jack glared at the women and after they quit, he turned and walked to the market. How dare they do that! Judging a person without knowing him! The society was so cruel...Was it really bad for a husband help his wife?
Ignoring the glances for the other women, he walked with his head high inside the market.
Rose was bored. How she would copy for other seven months in bed? She was going to scream if she had to lay down for other one minute.
Carefully sitting up, she walked slowly out of the master bedroom and in the stairs. Being careful not to fall she climbed down and went to the living room.
Most of the books were in the Sitting Room of their bedroom but Jack had set a few bookcases in the living room as well. Running her thumb along the books, she took the first book that had the name 'The Broken Wings'.
Getting the blanket that was in the edge of the couch she went to the kitchen and made some tea. She knew that Jack would scold her later for getting up and moving around but she would care less right now. She was feeling depressing all day.
Laying down on the couch she sipped her tea as she read the book. At first it was a bit boring but at the third chapter she got addicted and started reading.
"Rose?"
Rose turned and saw Jack holding three shopping bags frowning at her. "What are you doing here? You should be laying down?"
"What am I doing now?" Rose asked annoyed. "Because I'm not in the bedroom?"
"And you made tea by yourself? Rose you can't-
"Stop treating me like a little child!" Rose exclaimed. "Leave this for when our baby will start growing up. Not at me"
Jack sighed and started rubbing her shoulders. Rose leaned her head at his hands as comfort and niceness filled her. "I'm not able to lose a baby Rose" he murmured. "I already love it so much"
"I love it too" Rose said grinning softly at him. "But we have to stay courageous and have positive thoughts"
Jack kissed her forehead. "I'm going to unpack the bags"
While Rose was reading the book she started dozing off and then...
"Rose?"
Rose looked at Jack, who had a furious face, glaring at her.
"Why are you dancing?"
Rose suddenly noticed that the book hsd influenced her and started dancing around the room. She hanged her head in shame.
"I'm sorry. The book influenced me and I started spinning around the room"
Jack approached her and gripped her shoulders tightly.
"Jack you're hurting me" she gasped as his nails digged into her skin.
"Why are you always like this? I can understand your mother now- you're just a little brat that only cares about herself!"
"How dare you?" Rose screamed. "You were supposed to love me and go against my mother but-
"Don't yell at me!" Jack screamed back and Rose looked at him with widened eyes. Why he was acting like this? "You ought to treat me with respect and-
"You don't demand respect, you're getting it when you deserve to" Rose snapped.
"Rule one; Don't interrupt me and rule two; don't snap at me"
Rose laughed ironically. "Since when you have rules?"
"Since you married me but you're too fool to understand"
Rose burst into tears. "Why do you hate me, why? How you became like Cal in five minutes?"
Jack pushed her against the wall and she widened her eyes gasping. "Don't you dare compare be to him. And even if you do, neither of us deserve you" he spatted. "Don't you know how many gossips are around for you?"
"Why do you hate me, why?" Rose sobbed. She felt him shaking her and she tried to pull away. "Let me go! You don't love me!"
"Rose what are you talking about, of course I love you!"
Rose opened her eyes and she wasn't against the wall anymore and instead of hatred Jack looked at her eyes with full love and worry. He started stroking her hair and pulled her in his lap.
"Oh Rose, don't cry...you just had a bad dream"
Rose sobbed as she clutched his shirt. "You had became like Cal...You hated me"
"I would never, never hate you." he said cupping her face. "It was just a dream, I would never hate you and become like Cal, even in an another universe" he whispered and kissed her lips and forehead again.
"Hold me" she breathed.
Jack hugged her tighter. "I'll never stop"
