Chapter 7
The limo pulled up to Auradon Prep, finally coming to a stop. The group walked across the campus in silence. "I'll get these back to the gym." Lonnie said.
Jay nodded. "Yeah, thanks."
Evie turned to Ben "I want to make a change to Rayner's Cotillion outfit, if that's right with you?"
"Of course, I'll have it sent over right away." Ben told her.
"I'll take Rayner off your hands and get him ready, we'll see you there then." Evie smiled and took Rayner into her arms.
"Ben!" Jane called out. "There you are. Cotillions tonight." She pulled him aside and showed him the photo of the completed stained glass window on her tablet. "This is the stained glass window for Mal. Isn't it beautiful? She's going to love it."
"Hold on," Ben looked over to Mal. "Do you want to cancel?" He asked her. Mal seemed shocked.
"Oh! I can come back. But, it has to be really, really soon." Jane said, starting to freak out.
"No, no, no, nows fine." Ben assured Jane. "Do whatever you need to do." He whispered to Mal before walking away with Jane. Bree went with them.
Evie and Amy walked up to Mal. "We need to talk." Evie mumbled.
"No." Carlos stopped them.
"No?" Amy repeated.
"No." Malice confirmed. "You guys are always going off in a huddle whispering your girl talk, or whatever, and we're tired of it."
"I'm not." Jay defended. Henry shrugged his shoulders. Carlos and Malice gave them both a look.
"We're your family too," Carlos reminded. "We've been through a lot together. We're not stopping that now, so everyone sit." All the members eventually, though kind of reluctantly, sat on the ground in a circle. Rayner and Dude went off to play in the grass.
"I don't have a clue on how to start girl talk." Malice admitted.
"What up?" Jay tried. Everyone looked around at each other.
"Well," Mal began. "I'm a mess. Six months ago I was stealing candy from babies, and now everyone wants me to be the lady of the court. I just can't keep up the act."
"Then don't." Carlos told her.
"See? This was dumb." Jay started to get up.
"Maybe it wasn't." Amy said, glancing over at Evie. Jay sat back down.
Evie understood. "We're always going to be the kids from the Isle. I tried to forget it, but those are our roots. We all did what we had to do to survive, but it made us who we are. We are never going to be like anybody else here, and that's okay."
"And we can't fake it." Amy added.
"Never." Henry agreed.
"Yeah, especially without my spell book." Mal looked at the ground.
"If Ben doesn't love the real you, then he's not the one." Carlos said. "Give him a chance first."
Evie smiled. "I like that. Listen, I'm going to make a few changes to your dress, and if you're up for it, only if you're up for it, it'll be waiting for you, okay?" Mal nodded. Evie got up to go to her dorm. "Rayner!" she called out. "Come on, we have to go get ready for the party." Rayner walked towards her. She picked him up and walked to the school followed by everyone else.
Malice stayed back, sitting next to his sister. "Come to Cotillion tonight. If Ben isn't smart enough to love you, and you can't stand another day, I'll drive you back tomorrow myself." After Malice got up to go, leaving Mal to her own thoughts.
Amy and Freddie walked across the green lawn. "I know I'm new to this whole Auradon thing, but does that girl talk thing happen often?" Freddie asked.
"No, but maybe it should." Amy answered. "Now come on and let's get ready for Cotillion. Evie can make you a dress in no time at all."
Elsewhere, Carlos and Dude were strolling through the gardens. "Girl talk, crushed it." Dude complemented.
Carlos laughed. "Yeah, except for when it comes to asking out Jane, then I'm a total chicken. Even Rayner had enough courage to ask Amy to Cotillion."
Dude stopped. "I'm going to paraphrase the bravest boy I know." Carlos looked down at him. "I she doesn't like you, then she's not the one for you."
"You really are man's best friend." Carlos petted the top of Dude's head. "Come on buddy, let's go." While walking to the dorms Carlos saw Jane rushing around talking on the phone. He ran up to her. Jane smiled, lowering her phone a bit. "Uh...would you...go to Cotillion with me?" Carlos stuttered.
"We're all taking a stretch carriage over at six." Jane told him. She started talking on the phone again. "Yeah, no, no, the pen toppers go on the left side."
"No, I mean, um...with me?" Carlos clarified.
"Want me to stop by your room?" Jane inquired, turning her attention back to her phone. "No, no, no. So when you're on the boat facing left. Yeah, yeah, right. No, no, no, not right, left."
"This is going to be harder than I thought." Carlos bit his lip. "Jane?"
"Yeah?" Jane questioned. Carlos lowered the phone from Jane's ear.
"Would you...be my date for Cotillion? And if you don't hate me by the end of it, would you consider...maybe being more than friends...maybe?" Carlos asked.
Jane smiled. "Like boyfriend and girlfriend? And we can hold hands instead of slugging each other all the time? And we can text? And I can tell you how great you are? Because, Carlos, you're really, really great. And you're so cute and so nice and I'm the luckiest girl in the world!"
"Me too!" Carlos exclaimed. "I mean guy, I'm the luckiest guy!" The two shared a big hug. Suddenly Jane remembered she was on the phone with someone.
"I'll see you later?" Jane questioned.
"Yeah, totally." Carlos said. He watched as she walked away, talking on the phone.
"Good boy." Dude praised.
Carlos chuckled. "Come on, Dude, let's go."
In the Auradon Prep gym a last minute ROAR practice was going on. Jay came in and got everyone's attention. "Let's bring it in. The team huddled around him. "All right, you all know that I come from the Isle where things are pretty wack, but there is one thing the Isle has got on Auradon, if you're strong we want you by our side, girl or boy."
"Hold on Jay, we don't break the rules here in Auradon, that's more over on the Isle." Chad reminded.
"The team shall be comprised of a captain and eight men." Jay read aloud. "So give it up for your new team captain."
Lonnie ran into the gym and Jay gave her the whistle, before clapping and leading everyone in a bow, which Chad reluctantly did. Lonnie blew the whistle. "Give me ten." She ordered. The guys started doing push ups, counting them off. Lonnie put a foot on Chad's back. "Pick it up Chad. Nice form, Jay." After ten push ups Lonnie decided that practice was done. "Okay, practice is over. Get out of here, go get ready for Cotillion." The team left the gym. "Hey Jay."
Jay turned around. "Yeah?"
"Just wait till I tell my mom." Lonnie said.
Jay patted her shoulder. "Let's get out of here."
Back in Carlos and Jay's dorm room, Chad was taking a copy of the crown out of the 3D printer. He put it on top of his head and looked at himself in the mirror. "Not bad, not bad at all." He complimented himself. "What's that? Why no Audrey, I haven't picked my queen yet." Chad continued to look at his reflection till his phone rang. "Who could be calling me? Audrey!" He screamed, throwing the phone on the floor and going after it.
Carlos came to the door. "Chad this is-" Chad shushed him. "This is my room, Chad."
Chad held up his hand, listening to Audrey speak on the other end. "Audrey? Yeah? Oh, that's wonderful!" Chad got up on his knees. "She got a flat tire in Sherwood Forest, and she wants me to go fix it!" He explained.
"That's six hours away." Carlos said.
"Only six?" Chad questioned. "I'm going to be there sooner than I thought." Chad ended the call and got up to leave.
Carlos stopped him. "My printer, my crown." He took the crown off Chad's head. Chad ran out of the room. "I'm coming, Audrey!" he yelled.
"Wow," Carlos shook his head before getting ready for Cotillion.
In Mal and Evies dorm room, Evie was looking over the dresses while Rayner played with the blocks. She had already made the changes to Mal and Rayner's outfits, and made Freddie a dress for Cotillion. Suddenly there was a knock at the door.
Evie came out from behind the rack of dresses. "Come in."
"I have a scout's badge in s'mores." Doug informed. "How could you go camping without me?"
"What?" Evie asked.
"Are you seeing someone else?" Doug questioned.
"No!" Evie exclaimed.
"Is it Happy's son? Because let me tell you, he is not as happy as his dad, kind of a dark streak, in fact." Doug confessed.
Evie took Doug's hands and breathed deeply. "Ben and Bree got captured on the Isle, we rescued them and saved Auradon."
"So, you're not seeing Happy's son or anybody else?" Doug inquired.
"Don't be dopey." Evie gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Besides, we have dresses to deliver, it is Cotillion day after all." Evie looked over and saw Dizzy's hair pieces. "And you know what? I was lucky enough to have been given a chance, and now I need to give someone else a chance, too."
"My Uncle Bashful used to say that." Doug told her.
"Did he?" Evie asked.
"Yeah, but very quietly." Doug said. Evie laughed.
The block tower Rayner had been building fell over, causing Evie to look over at the young prince. "Oh Rayner! I had told Ben I'd get him ready, and he really needs a bath."
Mal walked into the room. "I'll do it."
Evie looked at her. "Are you sure?"
"Positive." Mal replied.
"Okay then, let's do this." Evie and rolled the rack of dresses out of the room, also bringing Dizzy's hair accessories.
Mal gave Rayner a bath and even put bubbles in it, one of his favorite things and let him play with some of the toys they kept for him, but he didn't want to. Mal wrapped him in a soft white towel then sat down. "Rayner, what's wrong? You don't seem like your usual happy self." Mal asked.
"Ma leave me." Rayner cried.
"What? Ray, I'm not leaving you, I'll never leave you." Mal assured him.
"Ma no go." Rayner said.
"No, I'm not going anywhere." Mal gave him a hug. "I promise." Mal wiped the tears from Rayner's face. "Now cheer up, we have to finish getting you ready for the party."
A little later Evie sat on her bed in her Cotillion dress straightening Rayner's blue bow tie. A pink rose had been sewn on the right side of the matching vest. "There you go your highness, you look very handsome. Now let's get you to your date." Before leaving she gave him a fake pink rose.
Taking Rayner's free hand, Evie walked with him to Amy and Lonnie's dorm room. She picked him up before knocking on the door.
Lonnie opened it. "Amy, your date has arrived."
Amy came to the door in a lovely, pink, floor length dress. "Hi Rayner."
Rayner stretched out his arm. "You, Pinky."
"For me?" Amy took the pink rose from him. "It's beautiful, thank you."
"I need a picture." Evie exclaimed. Amy took Rayner in her arms, careful not to crush the pink rose. Evie and Lonnie both took pictures on their phones. After that, they started walking towards the entrance of the school.
"Is Mal coming or not?" Amy questioned.
"I'm not sure." Evie confessed. "She wasn't dressed or ready at all when I left." They finally got to the entrance, where everyone else was waiting for the stretch carriage. After a few minutes Mal came up to them in her dress for Cotillion.
"So you're coming with us." Amy said.
Mal looked over at Malice. "Yeah, I am."
A little bit after that the carriage came. Mal relaxed, even gave a small smile. "What could possibly go wrong?" She thought to herself.
