Summary: AU. Set in 10th century. After learning that two of his sons are having feelings for a widow, Tatia, Mikael's hatred for Klaus went to the peak and thus he thought of marrying Klaus to an unlucky girl in the village while he engaged Elijah with Tatia's sister, Katerina.
Note: I don't own Kalijah, Klaroline or TVD. Everything I write is for fun and is a part of my imagination. I really don't know how people of 10th century acted. Excuse my mistakes, it isn't beta read.

As Caroline returned with a wooden bucket, Kol found her on the way from the river.
He greeted with a snarky comment. "Aw, occupied like always." She gave him a playful eye roll. "I'm certain you wouldn't make it alive if there is no work for you."
Kol looked around at the people near the water and suggested he would carry the bucket. On the way back she surveyed the woods, minding her steps. "This village is getting boring with the days." He claimed suddenly.
She raised her brows, as she expected him to continue.
"How am I going to convince my stubborn father that we have to step out of this place?"
She tried to ask him why he didn't like the place anymore. When it came to understanding her signals, Kol wasn't as good as Niklaus, Bonnie or Katherine. She wouldn't blame him because they hardly interacted.
A perplexed Kol gave his apologies. One moment later he murmured, "It must be truly hard for you, isn't it? To have people continuously torment for something you haven't done." Caroline stiffened her smile in response.
"Didn't you ever get angry for the mistreatment you received?"
She felt sad but never angry, for she believed her curse was from the Gods placed upon her sins from another life. That's what everyone claimed.
Caroline shook her head as no.
Something about him was surprisingly felt nice at that point. Perhaps it was the way his stare filled with warmth. He seemed thoughtful for a bit.
"Had my brother ever forgot to tell you are a special someone, darling, take my suggestion and leave him for good." He winked, making her giggle.
She didn't signal anything this time, keeping in mind that he would barely interpret her signals. However, she wanted to convey that Niklaus had always made her feel special.
Just as she was coming out of those thoughts, she found the familiar necklace hanging from his belt. Bonnie's.
When he found her smiling, Kol failed to see the reason why. So, he ended up saying, "I'm glad I amuse you."
Good thing: Mikael wasn't home. Niklaus had been avoiding his father for the past few days. If he was at home, Niklaus wouldn't be this peaceful.
Out of his family, Niklaus mastered the matter of trade, and he was doing better than his father. Mikael couldn't digest it, but it was the truth.
Even after proving it to his father, Mikael had always belittled him.
Accepting they could never get along and it was a waste of time to convince his father, Niklaus chose to ignore. All he remembered was that he must make a small fortune by the time Caroline and he started their lives.
He was determined to provide the best for his love. It was almost getting dark, he would begin his journey the next day morning.
Smiling distantly at his cart, he turned around to spot Kol and Caroline coming in his way. For some reason, his little brother appeared extremely casual with Caroline.
That was a first, and Klaus wondered why. Was Kol finally able to see past her origin?
From the distance, he watched as Kol gave Caroline a curt bow before leaving in the other direction. She was grinning from ear to ear by the time she reached Klaus.
"My brother made a fool out of himself, I presume," Niklaus scoffed. She punched on his arm, treated with an incredulous look. "He is the entertainer of the family." She signaled at the direction Kol left and touched her heart. "You like him?" Niklaus curved a brow up. She touched her heart again. "He is...a good man?" Caroline smiled for an answer.
Only if she had known...
Niklaus inhaled loudly, tiredly as he returned to his arrangements. He had a long way to go tomorrow. However, it was nothing he wouldn't enjoy.
Caroline touched his arm, and he recognized from her gentle touch; she was conveying she would miss him.
"I do wish to take you with me, Caroline," he said weakly. If it weren't for stupid traditions, if it wasn't for Rebekah, if it wasn't for his family, Niklaus would have kept her close to him. Always. She understood without him expressing. "I wish I could." That line came out as a whisper.
Not meeting her affectionate gaze didn't work out for him. She forced him to meet her eyes. Like he expected they were moist, but the smile on her face comforted him as it would always. "You read me well, yes?"
Throwing arms around his neck she brought them close. Huffing smile when she rubbed his nose with hers, he placed hands at her hips. Then he kissed her slowly and sensually.
"You know, you are a beautiful person. Inside out."
Caroline brought her palm to his chest and then pressed to her bosom.
"Yes, I am lucky to have you."
Giggling at his words, once again she captured his lips.
Henrik didn't take it well when Elijah condemned his secretive plans to leave with Niklaus.
The youngest sibling decided to act as mischievous as the younger siblings in the family. Kol, Niklaus and sometimes Rebekah- they would break rules without getting caught.
Even Henrik wanted to be admired. It was his only chance to prove he wasn't a child anymore. He learned to hunt, might not be skilled like his father but he would manage things. This was the only chance, Henrik thought, as he prepared to get in the cart without Niklaus' knowledge.
But Niklaus caught him with his weapons and surveyed him for a bit.
"You shall hide in the cart at dawn."
"Henrik left with Nik." Rebekah shared her concern with Caroline. The mute one became frantic at that instant. Niklaus better not be serious about taking Henrik with him. "I hope they return before father."
Henrik went with Niklaus.
When Caroline grasped her elbow, Rebekah sighed in defeat. "Elijah scolded me for not informing him or mother earlier. I tried to convince Henrik, Caroline, but my words fell on deaf ears."
Caroline understood her anxiety, but she couldn't do anything. Niklaus and Henrik must be far away from the village by this point in time.
"Everyone is worried about him and Niklaus."
…
Henrik stalled with uncommon excitement. Since the older one could understand how much it meant to him, they were out. At nightfall, the brothers hid the cart in a small cave they found with much difficulty.
"Last time they resided somewhere close," Nik stated, "I believe they moved away."
Henrik wasn't going to settle with that. "Where is it you saw their camp?"
"It was exactly a mile or two from this area," Nik said distantly. "I think tonight isn't safe to get into mischief."
"Where is your sense of adventure, big brother?" Henrik sneered out a reminder. "You promised fun."
No, Henrik didn't understand. Niklaus was certain about his gist. He must try to convince his little brother, manipulate or condemn him if the situation would permit. For an instant, he even hated himself for bringing Henrik to the exact place. Had he lied and taken his brother to a different place, he would have avoided current trepidation.
"I have other plans, Henrik," Niklaus turned to this brother after he was determined to change his mind at any cost.
That evening Elijah returned home after he finished chores. He felt sick with a burning fever but neglected. He assumed it was due to irregularities in the weather. Nadia's arrival fluctuated their sleep schedules. His baby girl needed tons of care and attention, especially during the nights, while Katerina's body and mind demanded more rest. So, he had no problem to stay awake to look after Nadia.
Soon Katerina came into view, a smile to his lips. The returning smile from her could have lifted his spirits. Curling arms around her, Elijah kissed on her head.
"You're burning," his wife noticed, as she pressed her palm to his face.
"All I need is rest," he differed. "Where is Nadia?"
"With Rebekah and Caroline," Katerina answered, still not convinced with his suggestion. "Rest for a while. I will get some…" he didn't let her slip out of the grasp.
"Don't bother," he assured. "So, Finn and Sage left to her village?"
"Ivar could have stayed back with us. He likes Nadia," she unclasped his arms and went to get a wet cloth to put on his forehead. "But Sage insisted that he go with them."
Elijah smiled to himself as he settled into the chair. "I wouldn't let my daughter out of my sight either."
Katerina quirked a brow and nodded. "Yes, you wouldn't. For you worry too much about Nadia."
"I love my daughter, and my worry didn't cross the line," he denied his wife's tease. "I am…" he didn't know how to put forward. Katerina smirked in revelation and both knew she was right.
She was about to place the wet cloth on his forehead, but the familiar voice cried from somewhere.
"Mother!"
It belonged to Niklaus.
"Mother!"
The couple shared a look of disdain because they predicted something terrible happened.
