Sorry for the weird format of the scene below. I recently got a review from Guest asking for a first anniversary or date with Serena(my OC) and Lance and was so happy. This is a scene I had from a long time ago before I knew what was going to be the plot for them, so this isn't canon in my stories but it was a way to see how they would interact in a relationship.
Feel free to request more pokemon oneshots, etc... by PM'ing or reviewing this story and I will do my best to keep up!
Thank you again to Guest for reviewing!
For being her birthday, the day was turning out to be shit.
First, she woke up late for work and missed seeing Lance before his big day with the Elders in Blackthorn. Second, work was swamped with paperwork and emergency visits from trainers biting off more than they can chew! Third! She can't remember, but it's there somewhere below the mess on her desk.
Happy birthday, sweetheart! Aaron's text reads on her gear as she heads from one room to the next behind Joy. It brings a short-lived smile to her face before she puts on her work facade and dives into another appointment.
She is elated at all the love today, a real sweet way to help her get through the crap being thrown at her. She might not get to see Lance, if there's anyway she could get out of her early and go see him do his trial, and that's the real bummer of the day. Things have been going to well and she has a mission to go on in two days, she wants all the time she can get!
A few hours later, well after lunch, she gets a knock on her door.
"Come in," she groans while leaning back on her chair with her eyes closed.
It creaks open and several footsteps come bounding in, "Happy birthday!"
A grin forms on her face as she opens her eyes to see Karen and Will in front of her desk holding a small cake with two lit candles, two bags and a box of presents. Hands on her chest, she beams at them, nearly in tears with how happy they've made her with this trip.
"You guys, thank you!"
"We heard you're super busy today of all days," Karen sets the cake and presents down while Will gets his gear out to take video. "The two bags are from us and the box is from Lance. Quick! Blow out the candles!"
Holding the box, Serena frowns at it before doing as told while the two sing a horrid rendition of 'happy birthday'. "From Lance? We were having dinner tomorrow for my birthday."
"I'm sure you'll get that to," Will waves off her worry. "Let him spoil you."
With a scoff, she goes to set it down and open the bag when Karen smacks her hand and pushes the box into her hands. "You have to open this first."
"Ow. Okay," Serena soothes her hand before tearing the dark blue paper off the box. Her favorite color.
A smile touches her lips as she pulls open the box as long as her forearm. Inside is a slimmer box, gray in color with a blue bow taped to the side. She drops the bigger box and flips around the second one in wonder. Folding over the top lip, she gasps when she sees a tablet inside!
"Just in time for my mission!" she squeals, pulling the device out and hugging it. "He probably hid the bag for it at home."
"There's more," Karen hints.
Will is still recording and suddenly she's nervous about what else it could be. She presses the lock button to find it already on and with her and Lance's face smiling back at her. She blushes at their happy face and tries to hide it from the camera and fails. The two giggle at her as she easily guesses the code as his birthday to find a picture of her and Ty as the home screen background.
Heart bursting with joy, she hugs the tablet to her chest when a noise makes her pull away.
"A video? Seriously?" she groans at how much Lance is doing for her.
Will and Karen settle into chairs as she turns it up for them to hear. By now, she knows the camera is on her face, and zoomed in… What a day, for sure.
"Okay," Lance on screen grins at her. He's holding the tablet at a good distance so that she can see his whole smile and his golden eyes. "Hey you, happy birthday. I know I can't be there for you and that sucks. I really wanted today to be perfect, but our lives just allow it. Even though I'm not there, I want you to know that I will be thinking of you the whole time during my trial for Senior Dragon Tamer.
"We've been together a year, and best friends for at least two years though it feels like more than that. In spite of everything you've been through, you've let me in and I am forever grateful for that," he takes a breath as if nervous and runs a hand through his hair. She grins at the gesture, knowing it all too well. "I don't want you to think that you owe me anything from today, okay? I'm saying this so you know, not because I want to hear it back-" all three of them start, Serena's face begins to burn and her heart races, "-but I love you. I really do."
He takes a moment to chuckle and exhale deeply. "I know that you're not ready. I am and I will wait because you're my best other half."
In the background, she hears a door shut and he smiles again. "Well, you're home now so, I gotta go. See you later and I love you."
Tears in her eyes and hand over her mouth, she glances up at Will and Karen. Both elites have their eyes and mouths wide open, Karen with glee and Will in shock. They glance at each other before all three are squealing and dancing around her office.
"Wait!" Serena holds up her hands and points to Will's gear. "Stop recording."
"Oh shit," he stops it, saves it and begins jumping again. "He's in love with you! He's in love with you!"
"Ya slut!" Karen laughs, swinging her around. "You guys are two cute… Stop crying!"
"I-I-I can-can't!" Serena sobs and laughs. "I can't believe it."
"Seriously?" Will deadpans, stopping in his dance to pull Serena close. "I know you've been through some shit, and, girl, you've come so far. You're deserving of someone who sees you as a whole person, and not half of them. I know you love him too and it's okay if you're nervous about it. It's a dangerous thing."
Absorbing his words, Serena nods and wipes her tears. "I think you're right."
"Uh oh," Karen rolls her eyes as Will's gleam.
"I mean, I know I do. I just have been too scared to say anything because what if he didn't? And that shouldn't stop me from allowing myself to feel anything," she reasons, pulling away from them and setting the tablet on his desk. A smile blooms on her face again. "I love Lance, you guys."
"Yes!" the two cheer and dance again.
After a few minutes of chattering, she opens their gifts to find lingerie in Karen's and a poetry book from Will. She thanks them and sends them on their way as another emergency comes in.
Lance huffs as Dragonite finishes off his Grandpa's pokemon with just a few seconds left on the timer. The old man is grinning at his grandson, just as his cousin and parents are. He moves to help his pokemon off the field while all the eligible tamers come to stand on the side of the field. Once he's stable, Lance puts his pokemon away and stands next to Clair.
The trials are a long and grueling process to further their knowledge and skills in dragon type training and history. All stages must be proctored by an elder and the work must be as close to perfect as possible. For the last three months, Lance and Clair have been stressing about this test as they are in the League and need to be the face of Blackthorn. A lot was resting on their shoulders.
The Elder's convene on the opposite side of the field while the small crowd of close family members murmur to each other. Off to the right, Lance can see his parents as well as Serena's dad as her mother was the judge for the battle and stands at the head of the field to watch the tamers and make sure they remain poised. He can't glance over to see if she made it, he wished he could show favoritism at work and give her the day off today, but he knows better. She would go in anyway.
The Elder's separate and two names are called. For a devastating moment, he thinks they are the only two who have passed. His heart nearly breaks as the two tamers step forward, but it revives when they are dismissed and told to try again in two years.
They turn to the rest of them and grin, announcing they have passed and will be receiving the proper certifications and recognition across all clans across the globe.
Glancing at his cousin with glowing eyes, they high five each other before gaining composure and awaiting to be given the commemorative ribbons. Heart pounding, Lance can barely contain his excitement when their dismissed. Once given, Clair jumps on him and he spins them around before turning towards their families and nearly dropping to the ground.
Serena, looking ragged, made it with minutes to spare. With her hair flying everywhere and her clothes wind-strewn, she looks wild and amazing. She grins at him, running up to him and jumping into his open arms. He catches her, squeezing her tight and pressing his lips to hers.
"Hey," he murmurs between kisses.
"Hey you," she replies before pulling back to cup his face. "I love you too."
Is he dreaming?
"What?"
"I. Love. You. Too." she punctuates each word with a kiss. "I got your present."
"Today is the most perfect day," he laughs and swings her around again and again. "You're the most perfect partner. I passed, I passed!"
"I know, I saw!" she says between breathless laughter. "I'm so proud of you."
"Thank you," he slows down in swinging and pulls her close. "Happy birthday."
