I should listen to Asa more. Because of her, I had no dreams.
But I woke up with a terrible hangover.
'Arrrgh.' I groaned. 'I need an aspirin.'
'You only Cam'ron.' Neeks said. 'Take this.'
Before I could ask what it was, Neeks shoved it down my mouth.
It tasted like my mom's ravioli, which of course reminded me of my mom. My headache was gone, but my pain wasn't.
'What is that?' I asked.
'Demigod aspirin.' Neeks said. 'We need to roll.'
I looked at the time. 'Shit.'
'What took you so long?' Anteros asked.
'Nica.' Neeks said. 'She sleeps like Clovis.'
'That should teach you not to drink so much.' Anteros said. 'Eat first; then we go.'
I looked at my hot chocolate, doughnuts and cake like The Last Supper.
But I wolfed it all down.
'We're ready.' I said. 'What is our task?'
'It's just a game.' Anteros said.
Neeks frowned. 'You made us worry so much for a game?'
'That's not nice, Neeks.' Anteros said. 'But you're right. This game is very simple.'
Anteros' definition of simple can not be compared to a song.
It was simply not simple.
Another thing I didn't know Florida had; high, steep as shmeck cliffs.
'The trust fall.' Anteros said. 'One of you go straight down, and the other, well, catches you.'
'How high is this cliff?' I asked.
'Fifty feet.' Anteros said. 'Fifty one if you round off the remaining eight inches.
'So; who's going down?' Anteros asked.
'Going down as in catching, or going down as in dying?' Neeks asked.
'Nicola; you seem okay.' Anteros said.
'What?' I asked.
'You fall, and Nico catches you.' Anteros said.
'What are the chances—'
'Two to three thousand.' Neeks said. 'Two because the only ways we can survive this is by a miracle or if we were gods.'
I got down on my knees and made the sign of the cross. 'In the name of Drake, Lil Wayne and French Montana.'
I looked at Neeks. 'Pray with me.'
Neeks knelt with no protest.
'What—'
'Sir, we are in the presence of the Lord now. Please excuse us.' I said.
'You're stalling.' Anteros said.
'In Jesus name.' I said.
Anteros walked away.
'Amen.' Neeks replied.
'Father, we thank you for this life, even though we refused to acknowledge thy presence because our father is a pagan deity.' I said.
'Amen.' Neeks said.
'Father, we shall first thank you for the many things you have given to us; Old Town Road by Lil Nas X, I Don't Care by Ed Sheeran, South Of The Border by Ed Sheeran and Various Artists—'
'Will Solace, Percy Jackson, Jason Grace, may his soul rest in Elysium.' Neeks said.
'Writing On The Wall, No Stylist, and Wiggle It by French Montana;' I continued. 'Bodak Yellow, Money, and Wish Wish by Cardi B.'
'My room in the Underworld, my Stygian Iron sword—'
'The iPhone 11 and 11pro, seventh generation iPods—'
'And many others we forgot to mention.' We said.
'Jehovah, forgive us our sins; as you forgave Joyner Lucas, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Arianna Grande.' I said. 'Father, as I plummet from this fifty foot cliff, cover me with the blood of Jesus.'
'Amen.'
'As Neeks tries to catch me; shower your blessings on him like you showered them on Drake.'
'Amen.'
'And if I die because of him; admit me into thy kingdom, and punish him.'
'Back to sender.'
'And if I live, thank you very, very much.
'We shall now play the sacred hymn of the lort; Devil's Work by Joyner Lucas.' I said, and Creesome complied.
'You want to kill us, right?' I asked Anteros.
'Pothos says he didn't say what you told me.' Anteros said. 'Meaning you were lying.'
'He's denying it.' I lied. 'Unless you're saying gods can't lie.'
'Oh, we lie.' Anteros said. 'But Pothos isn't one to step to me.'
'So you want to kill us because we lied?'
Anteros stared far beyond the cliff. 'Kinda.'
I walked to the end of the cliff.
I've always been afraid of heights; acrophobia, the psychologist called it. There was no way I was jumping off here.
Then I looked down to Neeks, waiting for me to fall,
spreading his arms out to catch me.
Why should you trust him? My brain yelled. He hates you. He's going to let you fall.
I turned back and saw the smug smile on Anteros' face. He knew I wouldn't do it.
'I trust you, Nicoló.' I yelled. 'Don't mess up.'
'Do you really want those engraved on your tombstone?' Nico asked.
'Fine.' I sighed. 'We at the top of the world!'
'How is that any better?'
'Are you okay with "Go to hell, Neeks"?'
'Fine.'
I sighed. 'Save me.'
Then I fell.
