Chapter 21: The Promise

Luke's POV

The young girl smiled at me as she sat down on my bed. Her bright green eyes shined with glee. She was short, wearing a pink dress, her blonde hair in twintails. She was not wearing any shoes, instead opted to go barefoot. She was foreign, yet oddly familiar. Like an old friend you haven't seen for years. I instinctively got on my knees in front of her.

"What is this!?" I gasped. "An illusion?! Or have I gone mad?!"

"Neither. I am Mavis, it is nice to finally meet you Luke!"

Mavis, Mavis Vermillion. That was the name of the first master of Fairy Tail. I had heard stories about her, legends more like. She was said to be an amazing strategist who had played an important role in the guild war way back. She founded Fairy Tail along three others. Master Makarov's father was one of them.

"You would be Fairy Tail's first master?!" I asked her confused.

"Yes! I am Mavis Vermillion!" Her voice was sweet and calm.

"But… Aren't you meant to be dead?" I asked her.

"I should, shouldn't I…" She retorted. "But here I am. As if I was alive, yet I am not!"

"So you are a ghost?"

"Something like that. But more importantly, I am a member of Fairy Tail! And so are you, Luke!"

"How can I call myself a member of Fairy Tail?! I was gone when they needed me the most!"

"You blame yourself, even though you could do nothing to stop what happened… I see myself in you… But you need to let go of that guilt!"

"I could have helped them, I still can!" I sobbed. "If I could leave this place I would go to them, I would be there for them!"

"You don't think they would question your new look?" She asked, pointing at my horns.

"I… I know they would see me, the real me… They would be hesitant, but in the end they are my family! They know me!"

"I'm glad!" Mavis' face brightened more as her smile grew bigger. "I always wanted Fairy Tail to be a guild that looked after its members and treated them like family. Even now, when the truth has been revealed to you, you still think of them as your family! That makes me so happy! But that will make this request to you even harder…"

"What request?!"

Mavis' face turned dark.

"As you know, Zeref created these demons, your kin. I fear their intentions. I fear the coming battle Fairy Tail will have to face! Tartaros is up to something, it won't happen today or even a year from now. But one day they will make their move!"

"And we will have to make a counter move…"

"Indeed. When the time comes, fairy Tail will have to face their evil and endure."

"You speak as if Fairy Tail is ready for battle. The guild is in shambles, most of our strongest members died on Tenrou Island, your island… If this is true that is?!" A part of me hoped that Mavis was going to tell me that I had been lied to, and that everyone from Fairy Tail was alright and alive.

"It was no lie, Tenrou Island was attacked by Acnologia, the Black Dragon! He attacked the members of Fairy Tail that was there to participate in the yearly S-class examination."

"So they are all dead…" Tears was building up in my eyes.

"No…They live!"

"What?!"

Mavis sighed.

"Before I tell you everything, I want you to promise me something first. You must promise me to do this, even though you will hate it, even though you will be miserable!"

"Why would I make such a promise!?"

"For the future of Fairy Tail… For the future of the World! To keep everyone you care for, as well as the World, safe!"

"It is that big of a promise!?"

"Yes! And it is important that you aid me in this. You are the only one I can turn to now!"

If it was this big of a deal, then I had to agree, the consequences be damned. If I could help the guild, let alone the World, I would do everything in my power to make it so.

"I promise… I give you my word that I will follow your instructions, to aid the guild that is my home and the World!"

Mavis smiled in response.

"The truth is that everyone that went to Tenrou Island are alive and well!"

"I feel a big 'but' coming!" I muttered.

"But, they are not conscious at the moment. When Acnologia attacked them they formed a ring and held hands, ready to died as a family. I in turn activated Fairy Sphere and protected them. But, the sphere acts like a stasis chamber. They are trapped in time, until I can undo the spell."

"When will that be?"

"In about a year… Sadly, it cannot be done before. "

"But they will be alright? They will return alive?"

"Yes, they will!"

An enormous burden had been lifted from my shoulders. I would be able to see them again. I would be able to see Natsu, Grey, Lucy, everyone! I would be able to kiss Erza again.

"So these are good news! I will be able to see my friends again!"

"Yes…" She had a pained look in her face.

"But!"

"But you won't be able to see them when they return… You must remain here, undercover. You must stay here as a spy… For all our sake."

I stepped away. Her words, I could hear them, but I refused to listen. I refused to

"No! You tell me my family is alive and that I will be able to see them again. But then tell me that I won't! What is this?!"

"You promised!" Mavis cried out. "I know it is…"

"Hard!? Yes! Yes, it is hard! To know your friends and family are alive but you won't be allowed to see them. I understand why! You want me to stay here and gather information, keep an eye on the demons. I get it."

"You will see everyone, you just…"

"Have to do the right thing… Make the harsh choice… Keep the World safe. I get it. I do! It's just..."

"You want to see them again…"

"And I will!" I sighed. "Once I am done with this mission… Then I will go home… "

"You mean it?" She looked worried.

"I promised, didn't I?! I intend to keep this promise… And then I go home."

I didn't know what awaited me. I had to endure living with the demons that Zeref created. I would have to earn their trust. For the World… For Fairy Tail… That was my promise...
