A/N: Waddup y'all Airi checkin' in with another chapter! I was hoping to get this out before Christmas and even New Years, but I was unfortunately unable to achieve that goal. Please forgive me!
Also, Forbidden Love has reached a total of exactly 800 reviews as of December 10th, 2019! Wow, what a huge milestone for me. I never thought my story would be reviewed this much or get this popular, but I'm humbled and grateful to everyone here who's reading this right now, or even if you aren't reading my lame and boring author's notes, I'm just as grateful for your support!
Between my last chapter and this one, I turned 23 in November, so happy belated to me! Yeehawww I'm slowly aging but I'm still ZeLink trash hehe.
Also, before I forget!
I'm a little (more like a lot) late, but Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Oh, and Happy New Year as well! It's a new decade now, so do your best to make the most of it! Make 2020 your best year yet! S2
Without further ado, the twenty-sixth chapter of Forbidden Love!

When The Night Falls
{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}
It's been a long time, Zelda reckoned; It's been four months since Link and the other soldiers departed for Lorule. With Hilda, Malon, and Impa by her side, Zelda found her days to be quite fun with the ability to find some enjoyment during the daylight hours despite him being on her mind. When the night falls and the lights go out however, her mind goes crazy.
It's been getting easier for her day by day, but just because it gets easier doesn't mean that it's not hard.
Zelda sat up on her bed and looked at her surroundings, grinning softly at what was before her. She was thankful for all the company she's been having since her cousin, or her counterpart as some say just based on her appearance, arrived. The Princess of Hyrule had the guest bed she had in her room for Hilda removed since Malon began staying at the castle so that they could all sleep on her bed, and the sight was quite ironic; her cousin was snoring quite loudly on the other side of her while the country bumpkin, who snuggled herself between the two princesses, slept elegantly with barely audible, rhythmic breaths.
Giggling softly, she sat up and got out of her bed, slipping her feet into a pair of sandals and placing a cloak over her nightgown. She changed her sleep attire to more appropriate, conservative attire compared to what she would sleep in when she slept by herself; since she slept in the same room as her best friends every night, and also shared her bed alongside Link on some nights, she couldn't allow herself to dress so shamefully.
Once she was ready, she silently exited her room and made her way through various corridors, leading herself to the kitchen to take a milk bun for a midnight snack she wouldn't tell anyone she ate. Once she concluded her business there, she made her way to the castle gardens to embrace the light emitted by the bright, full moon and admire the beautiful flowers and plants the gardeners maintained daily.
"It's pretty late, are you sure you should've ate that bread?" A soft, calming voice asked from a short distance.
It seems her time alone was soon concluded by a woman whose steps she didn't hear.
Zelda's attention turned to the woman, "o-oh, Impa! You're here too."
Once she saw her guardian who called her out on her snack that she claimed to not tell anyone about, she blushed pink, "I-I… How did you know I ate that? Don't tell me you have some sort of secret technique that lets you see what someone ate throughout the day."
Impa laughed, "not exactly, but I do have these two magical devices on my face called eyes that noticed a trace of bread crumbs resting on your cheek."
The princess immediately wiped her face while Impa took a seat beside her.
"So, you're up too I guess, huh?" She asked.
The older woman smiled, "are you really that surprised? I've been struggling to sleep since it all happened."
Zelda nodded, "ah, right… How could I forget. I guess I should've known."
"Ah, since we're on that topic, there's something I've been meaning to tell you but haven't had the chance to."
"Oh? What could it be?" Zelda inquired.
Impa took a deep breath, "well, in regards to the thieves that Nabooru took into custody… Their lives have been taken from them."
Not knowing how she should react, the Princess of Hyrule nodded slowly, "I see. That's good to hear; knowing that puts me at bay a little bit. It took quite awhile for it to happen, though."
"Yeah, I know. I've been in contact with Nabooru since the incident and she's been updating me ever since they were put behind bars. It took some time because they didn't want the thieves to get away without serving punishment behind a quick, easy death… So they delayed it.
"How were they punished?" She asked.
"Are you sure you want to know?" Impa replied.
"Well, is it bad?…" Zelda hesitantly responded.
"Nothing too graphic, so no, not really."
"Then sure."
"Well, they were chained to the walls without clothes, not given any food or water until they had no energy, then from there they were given the bare minimum in terms of food and water for survival, keeping them alive until their execution."
Zelda cringed at the thought, "Well, I'm thankful Lady Urbosa pulled through at least."
"She did mention how she wanted to see you again, since it has been some time."
"That would be nice; any company is good company."
Impa nodded, staying silent. That silence lingered around the pair for a bit of time, with the Sheikah giving the Hylian time to absorb the situation considering she has never gone through anything like that in her life until a few months ago.
"So, what's on your mind?" Impa asked, breaking the silence, "your balcony is your go to place; seeing you out here is different."
"Well, you know…"
"You're worried about him, huh?"
The princess nodded, gently resting her head on her guardian's shoulder, "it's been awhile…"
"I'm sure he's doing okay. Have you tried talking to him with that weird telepathy thing you guys have?"
"Yeah, I've tried… Many times, actually. But no answer. Maybe there's a limit to how far we can be apart? I don't know… But the fact that I haven't heard from him in so long makes me feel even more unsettled."
Impa took one of Zelda's hands in hers, "don't worry, Zelda. If there's anyone who has the fortitude to ride it out to the end, it's him. I'm sure he's eagerly waiting for the conclusion so he can come back home to you."
Zelda grinned slightly, "Yeah, maybe you're right… And since we're on the topic of Link, there's another thing on my mind."
"Oh? What in particular?" Impa asked.
"I'm just thinking about the progression of everything, and, I don't know. I mean, when I met him, I felt something I've never felt before. We continued to get to know each other and I quickly got really comfortable around him and was able to do things that I wouldn't normally do around people. I even ended up falling for a commoner. It just seems surreal to me, the only person I've ever opened up to this much before him was you."
"Well, remember when the three of us went to the Ordon Spring and met Ordona?"
Zelda giggled, "Yes. I also remember your face when you found out you had white hair."
"How about I slice off those luscious locks of yours." Impa barked, grinning.
"No! Please!" Zelda begged, placing both hands on her head, "My hair is really nice!"
Her guardian shook her head in disapproval, "That's a pretty poor reason to stop someone from chopping it off."
"I… I didn't know what else to say…" the princess admitted, "Anyway, continue!"
"Well, he did mention that the Hero and the Goddess Hylia knew each other, and Link has the spirit of the Hero. As for you, you're this generation's Princess Zelda, so the Goddess Hylia's spirit lies somewhere in you too."
Zelda nodded slowly, "Yeah, I know. Now that I've given it more thought, it makes me wonder… How much did I actually fall for him? Like me, as in Princess Zelda. I mean, the Goddess fell in love with the Hero but Link and I aren't them, we're our own people. Forgive me but it sounds baffling; my mind's been going back and forth."
Impa looked up into the starry sky, "Who cares?"
The Sheikah's unexpected statement caused Zelda to turn her head towards her.
"W-what?" She stuttered.
"Who cares?" She repeated, "I mean, when you look into your heart, you know you love him, don't you?"
"Yeah… But how much of it is the Goddess Hylia's?"
"None. Absolutely none." Impa replied.
"How do you know that?"
"Because yes, you may have Her Highness' spirit within you, but just because you have her spirit doesn't mean you have her heart. Your soul and spirit make up your heart. You have your own soul and your own spirit as well, and all that overtakes her spirit."
"But you just said none of it is hers, then said the spirit is part of the heart…"
"You have your own spirit too, Zel." Impa reminded, "Don't forget that. You may be the incarnation of Her Highness but you're not her. You're you. Maybe you felt that feeling of familiarity when you met him, and that could've possibly been from Her Highness, but other than that, it was all you."
"I guess you're right… it just has me thinking sometimes."
"Listen, I don't want you to have doubts like this about yourself, and Link. Once you start having doubts and letting it dwell within you, you'll just keep doubting more and more and it will be bad for the both of you. I want you to have trust him and trust yourself. You two built the relationship you have, and I don't want that to be broken down solely because of doubts."
Zelda nodded confidently, "Yeah, you're right! I'll do my best. I should put some trust where trust is due."
Impa nodded, "Good. I'm glad you see it this way as well."
"I'll be sure to put my trust him him as well. After all, I gradually fell for him, and he obviously fell for me first."
Impa failed to suppress a genuine laugh.
"What's so funny?" Zelda sneered.
"That was the fastest 'gradual' fall I've ever seen. Also, no, he didn't fall for you first; we both know you fell for him first."
"I did not fall for him first! I was merely astonished to meet someone like him and that's all!"
Impa stayed silent.
…
…
…
"Oh Link~" She quietly moaned in a mocking manner, reminiscing about the moment she caught Zelda performing indecently.
"STOP IT RIGHT NOW!" She pleaded, covering her face, "I'll kill you."
"Honey, you definitely chased him. It wasn't a far chase, but it was one nonetheless."
She felt herself blush pink, then released a sigh.
"I know… I looked so stupid and I still look stupid all the time, but I really can't help it."
"If that's not genuine feeling, I don't know what is." Impa chirped with a smile.
The Princess of Hyrule sighed, "I wish I could talk to him… Like I said earlier, he hasn't answered me when I tried to speak to him… I wish there was another way."
"Well, I could think of one."
"Oh? Like what?" Zelda inquired, completely interested.
"Since you can't talk to him telepathically, you should do what the rest of us normal people would do and write a letter to him, then have it sent by the postman to deliver to the courier in Lorule."
"Ah, the postman!" Zelda chimed, "He… He's an odd one."
Her guardian laughed, "I can't disagree even if I wanted to. But he gets the job done, and does a hell of a job too."
"Wouldn't it be weird if I just sent a letter to him?… I mean, it would be the only one."
"I'll have all the wives or significant others of the soldiers write letters as well if they wish, then they can all be sent as a bundle. It would be a great morale boost for the soldiers, so I doubt your father would deny my request."
"Oh Impa you're a genius!" Zelda sang, giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
The Sheikah returned her hug, "of course I am! Are you surprised? Also, you've been kissing me a lot more lately."
"Well, I need someone to show affection to while he's not here."
"Kissing my cheek is as far as you're getting with me, young lady."
"My my, your lips look very endearing under the moonlight…"
"Zelda!"
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding!"
It's been almost half a year since Link & company departed from Hyrule in order to support the land of Lorule against the rebels who opposed the monarchy. The conclusion of the madness seemed to be closer than anticipated, with the King's victory looking slightly clearer with each passing day.
The roles of Daphnes' soldiers were mostly consisted of lookouts, scouts, medical assistance, guarding the evacuated townspeople, who, if have no fled to neighbouring lands temporarily, stayed within the castle walls under the highest level of security. Since King Osfala stayed in the castle as well, it was initially deduced that having the townspeople and the king in the same place wouldn't be safe, but with such short notice, it was the only option they had. It helped that since the King was barricaded in between all of his forces, the only time that there was a chance the civilians would get attacked is if the rebels managed to break his army significantly, which they have not managed to do as of this point. As the war continued however, some of Daphnes' men, Link included, had to partake in some battles due to the decreasing number of active soldiers due to injury. Queen Seres stayed back in Hyrule along with Hilda, as per her husband's request.
The location of the final battle was the outskirts of Thieves' town, the base of the rebels. When the night falls, that was when the mix of Lorulean and Hyrulean soldiers will attack. An ambush was out of the question; based on all the battles that partook recently, it only made sense that the rebels will be attacked at their base, and they knew it… And they were ready for it.
They set up camp at the now vacant Octoball Derby arena. With the end in sight, King Osfala's forces were high in spirit.
"So, it all comes down to this." Kafei began, handing Link a cup of water.
Link took the cup from Kafei's hands and took a sip, "Yeah, then we can finally go home."
Kafei then took a seat beside Link, who was sitting under a tree.
"Man, I miss my wife's cooking." Kafei admitted, chuckling slightly.
Link couldn't help but chuckle as well. Now that the fighting was slowing down and victory was within their grasp, he spent more time reminiscing about his time back home in Hyrule. Thinking about his home made him grin; the castle was undoubtably his home, and he finally adjusted to the thought.
"What's the first thing you want to do when you get back?" Link curiously asked.
"I think I want to spend quality time with my wife and kids, then spend time with my wife."
"You mentioned spend time with your wife twice."
His fellow knight looked at him and smirked.
"Ahh, I get it." Link chimed, raising his cup towards Kafei, who then clinked his metal cup against Link's, with both men taking a sip after.
"How about you?" The blue-haired man asked.
"Well, I'll hopefully get to spend quality time with you know who." Link hinted.
"Ah, yes, her. Is there a name she goes by?" Kafei inquired.
"Elsa."
"Ah, quite an elegant name. Alright, I'll refer to her as that."
"I was hoping, for you know, when I get back, to have… you know." Link bashfully admitted, taking another sip.
Kafei then wrapped his arm wrap tightly around Link's shoulder and shook him, laughing cheerfully and raising his cup.
"Ah, I forgot you're the boy amongst men! It's about time you become one, so I'm hoping all goes well once we make our return."
"Sir Kafei! Sir Link!" A man called from a distance.
The pair turned their attention to the man once they heard his voice. Once the man arrived, he handed out an envelope to each of them.
"What are these?" Link asked, staring at the envelope.
"Letters," the knight replied, "we received a batch of letters from loved ones in Hyrule."
"Oh, really?!" Kafei exclaimed, "This must be from my wife!"
Link smiled, "Thank you, we appreciate it."
The knight saluted then proceeded to make his exit, having to deliver the rest of the letters to the other soldiers.
"Well, let's read 'em." Kafei suggested.
Link nodded and carefully opened the envelope, noticing there were written messages from multiple people.
Dear Link,
Malon here! Hope you're doing well! I'm not exactly sure what to write here but I wanted to write something so you know that I'm alive and doing well! That being said, I hope those things apply to you too! Oh my, that was terrible. I'm sorry, I wasn't prepared to write anything so I'm just writing what comes up in my head… Anyway! I miss you and I hope to see you back in Hyrule soon… It's been awhile since I've seen you and it would be very nice to see you in person once again. Stay safe! We're all waiting for you to come back.
Your fellow farmer,
Malon Lonlawna
He couldn't help but chuckle. For the short time he's known her, he quickly realized that she's an adorable girl. Once his laughter concluded, he continued to read.
Hello, Link. I am aware you are unable to answer this directly to me but how are you doing in my country? I do hope you are in good health and I highly anticipate your return to your own home. I'm looking forward to going on another adventure with you when you get back, and we could possibly bring Malon and Zelda along as well! That would be quite astounding; a group affair would be quite the thrill! Also, If you would not mind my selfish request, please send my father regards from my mother and I, I would appreciate it greatly. I wish you the best, and I pray for the health and safety of you and the rest of the soldiers. May victory be upon you.
Regards,
Hilda Raven Nohanesen-Lorule
Link felt himself smiling again. Since people he knew were writing him, it was safe for him to assume that he would be smiling the whole time.
He then noticed how formal Hilda wrote, and that sparked the memory of her being a princess as well. Since she acted very casual with him, despite that being his request to help her be a normal girl for a day, the memory of her status escaped him.
"Alright, next one…" Link muttered.
Hi,
Don't die or I'll kill you.
Impa
Link immediately laughed out loud. Concise with a hint of humour, Impa's definitely an interesting one. He wasn't offended by her short message; he appreciated the fact that she even wrote to him and he knew that she wasn't one who expresses emotions like this very much.
There was one more message for him to read, and it was the longest one in the bunch. He anticipated this one the most, since there was one person who he longed to hear from… And hopefully this message was from that person.
Mentally preparing himself, he began to read…
Hey! It's been awhile, a very long while… Too long, if you ask me…
There are so many things I want to say, things I want to know, and things I want to hear from you. I've tried many times to speak to you, and I'm sure you've tried too… But to no avail.
Things have been pretty calm here lately; same old, same old. Oh yeah! Malon's been staying at the castle for quite awhile. But don't worry! She goes home to see Talon for five days a week now in the morning, then comes back during the evening. She also sleeps at home some days as well, since she doesn't want her father to spend too much time without her there. She used to go there for only four days a week, but she wanted to provide more help for her father. Also, Talon has a ranch hand named Ingo now! That decreases his and Malon's workload, which is always good.
Impa's been quite busy since you left but she does spend her free time with us. We even met her mother and niece! They came to surprise Impa awhile back and my goddess they're both beautiful! I wish you could've been able to meet them too. Maybe next time, I suppose. Oh, and guess what! She has an older sister named Purah. Crazy right? I've known her for so long and I had absolutely no idea. I would definitely love to meet her too! I'll formally invite her and the rest of Impa's family sometime after you make your return home so you can meet her family as well.
I've been spending a lot more time with Malon and Hilda though, so I've been able to enjoy myself a little more lately instead of spending my time learning. Except for one thing…
I can't truly enjoy myself.
I miss you, I really do. There hasn't been a day where I haven't thought about you, and since you've left there's been a void in my heart that I can't fill. I yearn to hear your voice, hold your hand, and to hear you laugh. I wish I could show you how much I love and miss you, but words wouldn't be able to properly express it.
You're the first person I think about when I wake up, and the last person I think about before I go to sleep. I long to have you in my arms and the longer we're apart, the more I realize how much of a significant part of my life you are and that makes me love you even more.
I know this is a sappy love letter and just the thought of it makes me cringe slightly, but there's no other way for me to talk to you right now… So please don't make fun of me when you get back! Actually, you can if you want, as long as you're home… That's all I really want.
But for now, stay positive and I'll do my best to be positive as well! You're the strongest and bravest person I know; if there's anyone that can get through all this it's you. You managed to become the highest rank in my father's army and he has taken a liking to you, nobody else can achieve that! Nobody can beat you, the enemy is just out there waiting to be defeated when you're around! You're amazing and it's time for you to show it. As I write this letter to you, tears are streaming down my cheek because there's nothing I want more than to say this to you face to face… But along with these tears of longing, there are tears of joy, and you know why?
Because I know in my heart we'll be together again soon, and I spend my waking moments awaiting your return. We'll spend so much time together to make up for all the time together we've missed… And I'll show you how much I love you, in more ways than one… I'll make sure you know how much I've longed to hear your voice and feel your touch, I promise. So keep your head up and push forward, because your princess is waiting for you at home to give you your reward.
Yours truly,
Elsa
He felt a sharp pinch in his heart, whether it was from happiness that he heard from his significant other along with his friends, or the pain of being apart from all of them, he wasn't sure. All he knew was that he was fighting tears and did his best to prevent them from falling. Before letting one escape his eyelids, he gently wiped them. He wanted to keep a strong front, especially in an area full of men and with one of his best friends sitting beside him.
Hoping Kafei didn't notice him tearing up, he turned his heard toward his direction to see what Kafei was doing.
He was crying. A lot.
"I miss my wife and kids, dude!" He exclaimed, giving Link a hug.
He responded by returning his embrace, gently patting his back while chuckling.
"I know, dude, I know. We'll be home soon so you'll get to cry into her arms instead! But you gotta keep your cool! You'll be the laughing stock of the troops if they catch you bawling like a baby."
The blue-haired knight then let go of him and wiped his eyes, taking a couple of deep breaths before standing up.
"You're right! Thank you, brother. I gotta clear my head and mentally prepare myself for the final stretch. I'll see you when it's time to depart.
Link held his hand out for Kafei to shake, "Strength to you, my brother."
"As to you, brother." He replied before walking off.
And so he sat, leaning back against the tree that stood tall behind him. Twilight was soon approaching and that was when the soldiers were departing for the final battle. But for now, he used that time to shut his eyes, relax, and embrace the cool breeze that glissaded across his cheeks and through his hair along with the warm, soft rays from the sun.
"My men of Lorule, and my fellow knights from Hyrule. I, King Osfala stand in front of you today in amazement by the work everyone has put in. We've lost some but won most, and here we are, at the final stretch of battle. Let us step into battle with our heads held high and our swords held forward, pressing to the pedestal of victory!"
And so it began. Lorule made their move by sending their troops in at a frantic pace with piercing battle cries. The rebels were aware of their attack; there was no subtlety to their approach. Knowing it was their last chance, they sent their men forward as well.
Lorulean soldiers were sent as the first and second waves, to put pressure on the rebels who were less in numbers, so that the third wave, a mix of the rest of the Lorulean soldiers and Hyrulean soldiers, other than the select few who stayed at the king's side for maximum protection, can take advantage of the enemy being vulnerable.
"Third wave! Attack!" Osfala commanded.
With a fierce battle cry, the soldiers spurred their horses into motion, preparing to charge in to overwhelm the enemy with the power in numbers. Link held on tight to his horse and held his sword out and braced himself for war. Wearing soldier's armour provided by King Daphnes, which was highly praised for its superior defence, he felt ready.
As Link pressed forward, he realized something was off… The enemy was, retreating? But why? He knew the rebels were outnumbered but they were left vulnerable to King Osfala's archers, who took advantage of the situation. But what reason would they have to do this? What are they planning?
"We should fall back momentarily!" Link announced as loud as he could.
But how could everyone hear him over the numerous battle cries either from adrenaline or the realization of the opportunity they had in front of them, with the enemy's back turned.
"Stop! Everyone! The enemy has something planned!" Link cried.
"The enemy has a catapult!" A Lorulean general announced, "Everyone! We need to retreat!"
Bam.
Multiple non-lethal, round, metal cased objects released smoke along with extremely loud, deafening sounds caused a pain in their ears along with distorting their senses, with an emphasis on impairing their vision.
"Ahh!" Link cried as he accidentally dropped his sword, luckily managing to find the reins of his horse who began to panic, but before it could run frantically, one of the metal cased objects that was catapulted by the enemy collided with Link's helmet, with the full speed impact knocking it off his head before exploding with smoke, and more distortion of the senses.
Link held on for his life but the forceful impact from the casing caused him to slowly lose consciousness and bleed profusely from his temple. He fought against his body, which wanted to pass out. He didn't know what was going on and had no idea where he was going. All he knew was that his horse was just running at full speed and completely berserk.
His will was faltering, his body was giving up, he couldn't hold on anymore. No matter how much he willed his body to move, he didn't have the physical strength. The only thing that could make his body move was his horse, who kept uncontrollably swaying left and right, eventually launching link straight into a tree. With a face-first impact, he knew he wouldn't be able fight the pain.
Survival? Seemed like a stretch for him.
He felt his body roll a few times after colliding with a tree, eventually lying flat on his back. His eyes were barely open, and his breaths were very slow as large amounts of blood glissaded down his head.
"Hey! Hey!" He faintly heard a woman's voice call.
Her voice was getting louder as she continued to call for him. He couldn't hear completely well, but he could get a glimpse of the sound. It was calming, some could call it, endearing, accompanied by a hint of familiarity.
But it was a voice he didn't recognize.
He suddenly felt two delicate, gentle hands softly cup both his cheeks.
"Can you hear me?" She called again.
"Definitely a young adult." He reckoned.
This woman was kneeling beside him. Why was she there? Who is she? They were at war, why is there a woman who wasn't part of the battle here? How did she know where he was? He had no idea, but he didn't have the time to think anything through.
"Please answer me!" She cried, voice cracking.
"Probably a medic…" He deduced.
His vision was blurring, but he did his best to look up, seeing the woman's head above his, looking down at him. He couldn't make out her face exactly, but he could make out white hair, a pair of red glasses, and red irises…
And then everything went black.
